Probably flag that these are refurbished/ used laptops.
Specs looks good for the price.

  • Can it be expanded to 16gb memory?

    • +2

One slot, need to replace original stick. But yes.

    • There is a lot of confusion on that as the "7390 2-in-1" is soldered. But this model can be upgraded.

These are great laptops for school, except for the old batteries. A genuine or high-quality replacement should be under $100.
Or you can use a USB-C power-bank to top them up. 30W recommended.

      • +1

A lot of Dells won't charge unless your USB-C device does 20V profiles. You may need a hefty power bank that offers 65W charging.

        • +2

One of my kids has the 7390 2-in-1, ran it off a 30W charger when travelling.

@bargaino: Oh, that's good! Had a 8th gen Latitude and a 9th gen Vostro that were very picky.

      • Could you provide a link to buy Genuine batteries for reasonable price ~$100

I did some research on buying Genuine batteries for my HP laptop from Australian suppliers and the description can be misleading and confusing.

@bargaino: Yes, have used them for two Surface batteries.

          • @bargaino: They also have a physical store front in bridge road, Richmond 3121. Haven't bought from them but no bad reviews and they are quick to reply to questions about their products (previously looking for a Lenovo t470 battery).

          • @bargaino: Small supplier; Are they an authorized Dell supplier?.
I purchased a HP battery from eBay seller who has been in business for over 15 years for $30 and the battery seems to be alright.
            HW Info detects the battery as HP and provides a model number as the original HP battery;
Likely to be a OEM compatible battery where the chip has been programed to show as HP.
Brother cartridge chips are programed such that the machine accepts it as genuine brother cartridge.

        • Ordered a factory battery from Acer (I know not this thread) which was dead.

Acer wanted me to send the entire laptop for troubleshooting.

          F Acer

    • I've upgraded mine to 32GB. You'll need a single DDR4 so-dimm, though as only 1 slot.

  • Looks like there's only 1 slot for RAM, so you'll have to remove the old one to upgrade it.

  • These are very old. Processor is from 2017 just FYI, won't be powerhouse.

    • +8

So about the same as those $189 surface pro 5 that ozbargain went nuts for ?

(Also why does 2017 feel like so very long ago..)

      • +3

The display on the surface pro is much better, even better than most displays on the 1k laptop nowadays

      • The Pro 5 has an older 6th gen CPU and soldered RAM. As ozvictor said, you get it for the display.
They would be good for school, except kids tend to break the screens, due to lack of a rigid keyboard.

      • The Surface Pro was a flagship Microsoft device. This laptop wasn't.

The same way that former flagship phones like the iPhone 11 Pro Max or Galaxy S21 Ultra is probably a better choice than most current budget and midrange phones.

My company (a big one) still has 8th gen latitudes in service, although most of them will go this year. They're great as 99% of our work is web or Office based these days.

I had a 6th gen i5 latitude that I gave away mid last year, this will be the replacement for me because I miss that machine - it was incredibly useful. This has the benefit of double the cores, able to plug it into my usb c dock, ongoing Windows 11 support, it is everything I need for helping family with finances and taxes, writing long emails and updating my resume on the couch.

But yeah, not a workstation. For $220, wouldn't expect one.

      • +9

        Agreed.

Web browsing and streaming content is what 95% of people do with personal computers. Yet for some reason OzBargain rips apart "cheap" laptops as if everyone is looking to play AAA Title games.

For $219 these are great value.

      • My Gov department has 8th gen HP elitebook not due due for disposal till Aug still more than enough for office internet and mapping software. I still have a 6th gen in my Dell xps still going strong with a new battery

  • The battery should at least be replaceable, right?

  • Usb c powered?

    • You can, but they also have a round plug for charging, which is likely used by the supplied charger.

      • Really? My 7390 is USB C only

        • +2

You have the "2 in 1" model then. It causes much confusion.

    • Yes, USB-C or Dell 7.4mm barrel jack can be used for charging.

  • +5
    • Those are B-grade from ACT, which most likely means battery under 80%, same as above.

      • +1

Battery can be changed. Still a better specd laptop for a little more. Plus the extra RAM is crucial as the U suffix CPU is gutless and will grind after a Windows update. 8GB Ram for a laptop these days is a paper weight

        • -1

Meh, my old 8GB laptop still works fine with Windows 10. Though I use the 32GB desktop for development work. (boated IDE plus VM)

          • +1

@bargaino: That's great. So your laptop is used as a secondary paper weight when you want to browse the net and all the stuff that can handle minimal tasks

            • @vinni9284: Context was school etc. These are great for most office/study type work. No need to be an arse, but I guess if it makes you feel good …

        • Out of stock.

      • Mentioned as 60% and above.

Thanks for this. Do you know if keyboard is backlit?

      • Doesn't look it

  • Bought! Cheers OP!

My wife used this laptop(2 in 1 model) at work. Poor display and keyboard issues made her change it twice and now she is using Lenovo X1 with no issues for last 7 months.

    • How bad is the display on the 2in1 model? Does it have a very poor viewing angle, or was there something else wrong with it?

      • Seems fine to me (typing this on one now). I replaced a Surface Pro 5 with this and don't notice a difference (maybe I would side-by-side). Maybe it would be an issue if I used it all day long, don't know.

    • +1

Got a dell myself and the keyboard sucks ass

  • Pretty decent specs for the price. Latitude 7280/7290/7380/7390 use the same chassis and the keyboard is pretty nice on these, and supposedly you can even put a single 32GB stick in there according to a reddit post.

  • I bought one of these about a year ago except the i7/16GB model, it's a great little laptop for general use.

You really don't need the latest gen stuff for any "normal PC use".

Have one of these for the HS student in the house and has been going fine for all Yr 8 and Yr 9 stuff. I upgraded the RAM to 16 GB and replaced the battery (it gets about 6-7 hours). Also upped the SSD to a 1 TB. Since HS stuff for the most part is web based in Chrome/Google it works just fine and the only other thing HS student needs it for is spotify/youtube/netflix which it handles without a hitch. No reason to rip these apart as they're great value and it fits the use cases of most people (watch videos, browse web, listen to music and run Office).

  • With talk of buying a replacement battery for ~100, why not just spend 320 upfront for a newer laptop? eg https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186231898618?hash=item2b5c4941fa…

    • -2

That's not new. It's also refurbished.

      • +1

Newer. As in newer model, better performance.

    • Does the Lenovo have a new battery?

      • +2

I'm not associated with this company, but I did buy a gen 2 p14s from them recently at a similar price. Unit was basically brand new and battery health was 96%, and surprisingly had 20gb of ram rather than the 16gb on the listing. I would have posted as a deal but only had <10 units showing at the time.

You can always check with them what their minimum battery health is on these listings. At the very least I know it will be more than the 60% minimum in the Dell, and 12 months warranty is better than the 3 months listed.

Just posting options for people as I reckon $219+$100 battery replacement is not a good buy for an old Dell
