as per rep comment on 6/9/2023, 0% categories are currently still not eligible for Bonus Cashback

So as a shopper, who doesn't visit ozbargain, is it clear from Shopback's site this applies? I couldn't find anything "in simple terms" that indicated this.
Poor shmucks who dont ozbargain and identify that comment in a crosspost will miss out..

    Conditions from shopback:

Cashback (including bonus Cashback) is offered by ShopBack Australia Pty Ltd (ShopBack) and not Westpac Banking Corporation (Westpac). Cashback offers are not exclusive to Westpac cardholders. Bonus Cashback is offered exclusively to Westpac cardholders who have access to bonus Cashback on top of any other available Cashback. The ShopBack account is not a Westpac account. To start earning Cashback, you must hold and maintain an account with ShopBack. Cashback is credited to the ShopBack account. Eligibility criteria, Cashback redemption, withdrawal conditions and T&Cs apply. See ShopBack for further details.
To receive Westpac bonus Cashback, you must add an eligible Westpac debit or credit card to your ShopBack account, make an eligible purchase on the same Westpac debit or credit card and comply with the offer criteria.
Eligible Westpac debit and credit cards include most Westpac branded consumer debit and credit cards. Westpac business debit cards and Westpac business credit cards are currently not eligible for Westpac bonus Cashback offers.
Purchases made using digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay will be eligible for Westpac bonus Cashback as long as an eligible card is used as the linked payment method at the merchant’s checkout.
Purchases made using online payment methods such as PayPal, where ShopBack is not able to identify whether an eligible card was used at the merchant checkout, will not qualify for Westpac bonus Cashback (even where an eligible card is linked e.g. to the PayPal account).
Cashback offers may be varied or withdrawn at any time and may not be available in conjunction with any other promotion.
You will only be eligible for the Westpac bonus Cashback provided you meet the merchant offer criteria. Offers will be subject to their own Terms and Conditions.
Westpac is not responsible for the accuracy or completeness of claims made in relation to the services provided by merchants who participate in providing these offers.
You are in ShopBack’s website or app, which is a third-party site not owned by Westpac.
Westpac can give or receive commissions to or from any person in connection with Cashback provided by ShopBack.

Why not just add a line, in plain language, that states 0% categories will not be eligible? Would go a long way in clearing up any doubt.

Apologies if I did indeed miss it.

    • +2

The term that is listed that describes this limitation is: "You will only be eligible for the Westpac bonus Cashback provided you meet the merchant offer criteria."

I'll pass on feedback that that's not plain enough and hopefully they should be able to change this in future.

      • +3

That is not clear at all. My understanding was that Westpac cashbacks were honoured irrespective of whether the category was 0% or not. I've obviously missed this correspondence in some other OzB post but that can't be used as an excuse for Shopback given it should be evident when using the website/app.
This is particularly misleading given I'm pretty sure the Westpac cashbacks have indeed applied in the past on 0% categories.

Rep's excuse that "The Westpac Cashback not being available for purchases that do not themselves earn base cashback is a technical limitation" also seems to be inexcusable. Presumably then Westpac would indeed pay the cashback if the customer had evidence showing the purchase total being paid using their linked Westpac card, thus circumventing the supposed "technical limitation" of Shopback's system.

unless technical limitation => condition of only non-0% categories being eligible for cashback (disputed)

      • @gotyourback

"You will only be eligible for the Westpac bonus Cashback provided you meet the merchant offer criteria"

Why I find this ambiguous. I met the merchant criteria, by clicking through shopback, buying an item with my Westpac card. The fact that the base rebate is 0% doesn't appear to mean I failed to meet the criteria?

For the love of clarity, just as the OP added to their post, in simple terms add yet another clause such as "Excludes 0% categories"

It would go a long way to "clear things up" and avoid complaints about "blah blah didn't track, shopback is poo"

        • I met the merchant criteria, by clicking through shopback, buying an item with my Westpac card. The fact that the base rebate is 0% doesn't appear to mean I failed to meet the criteria?

+1 meeting the merchant offer criteria for cashback

just because a category has 0% cashback, doesn't mean that one can't meet the merchant offer criteria, it only means that 0% cashback can be received - @gotyourback?

          • @tonester: The merchant's offer is Cashback, so to not receive Cahsback is not meeting the offer criteria is how I understand it. I have heard from y'all loud and clear that this isn't clear enough and have passed on feedback - do know that these terms have to be written and approved by the Westpac team as well so we don't have complete control to just change it.

  • What category does an Air Fryer come under?

Hoping the CashBack rep can let me know plz

    • +1

Depends on the specific listing mate, each seller sets the category themselves so it's not so simple to define a product group or type as a certain category. Try plugging the link into camelcamelcamel for more info on it mate.

  • Partial payment with Amazon gift card is not eligible right ?

    • +3

You're all good to use partial payment with gift card for Amazon, it's stackable.

      • Thanks

May I ask, is this the same with Target? Partial gift card and partial payment using Westpac?

        • Amazon doesn't let you do partial gift card if you already have a bigger gift card balance does it?

        • +1

Hey mate, nah Target are different, because they don't pay Cashback on any amount paid for using a gift card the Bonus Cashback won't apply to any amount paid for using gift card. Only Amazon and eBay have this stack ability if I'm not mistaken.

          • @gotyourback: And Apple?

            • @G7brg: Yep good callout, Apple as well.

          • @gotyourback: Thanks for the clarification. Makes a huge difference on how much discount we can stack :)

      • Do you still receive the cashback on the full purchase amount less tax and shippjng or only in the paortion paisd on the Westpac card?

  • +7

This 0% categories is all for people to make mistake so SB doesn't have to pay. Why can't they add a simple check on their website to advise if item category is included for cashback or not?

    • +1

Hey mate, definitely not a purposeful decision, we are always working with Amazon to try and get more clarity on categories for each product, each product has the categories set by the individual seller so it's complex to define each item's category. The Westpac Cashback not being available for purchases that do not themselves earn base cashback is a technical limitation.

I will pass on feedback that there continues to be difficulty with Amazon categories, but in the meantime camelcamelcamel is the best service to help you understand a particular item's category.

      • +4

Its just always been difficult. Even as a seasoned OzBargainer and customer of ShopBack, having to check multiple things before purchasing and then crossing your fingers that you're right and will get the cashback always seems to be a lucky dip with Amazon. Often the category listings on Amazon and ShopBack just dont match to add to the confusion. They need to be aligned and the process needs to be simple. If the ShopBack browser add on could identify things in our Amazon cart that are 0% categories, that would help a lot too. I often have to take screenshots of the product page on Amazon and the cash back page on ShopBack as evidence, just in case things go pear shaped and I need to prove that I did everything right to meet the criteria. Not a great experience (and its the same experience with Cash Rewards, so Im not picking on ShopBack, this is just a general frustration of the process especially when a significant cash back is involved).

        • Yeah nah I do agree mate, it's something that is complicated and not something we aren't aware of. If there was a simple solution, definitely would have had something in place, but unfortunately it's complex. Hopefully we'll continue to work on this with Amazon and have a better way to help you categorise in future.

  • I thought the way to check Amazon category was to look at the top left on the desktop version of the page?

Is this not the case anymore? 3camels shows a different category.

  • @gotyourback Just wondering can you please clarify whether an item having a limited time deal is categorised as having a “store discounts” that are disqualified for the bonus offer from Westpac? Many thanks!

    • Hey mate, unsure what you mean. If there's an item that has a discount on it that's already applied (i.e, not a coupon code/specialised discount offered to you by the seller), it should be eligible for Cashback/Bonus Cashback provided it's not a 0% Cashback category.

      • Thanks for your clarification!

      • however, when a discount coupon is offered on an Amazon listing page, and given as promotional credit at checkout, then accepting/applying it makes the order ineligible for cashback?

        • @gotyourback?

  • +5

It's pretty disingenuous to say [P.S. excludes 0% Amazon categories] when the vast majority - 31 out of 40, by my count - are excluded.

At least be upfront and say it's a limited bonus or something more direct. It doesn't say ANYTHING on the Westpac Bonus page.

  • What happened to shoes and apparel? Used to be the categories that got some of the biggest upsizes suggesting the margins could sustain the cashback. Now they are 0%.

  • Have to agree with others - the Amazon promo is not much use, given that 3/4 of Amazon categories are set to 0%

  • Rip loaded to much to my wallet to split it for westpac sigh. Wanted to get a cooling comforter.

    • Oh no. Unless you buy more…

  • $5 Bonus on $100 Home Swap gc (includes Amazon) if anyone needs it:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830200

  • what to buy what to buy

  • +1

So many exclusions, this is getting tiresome.

If I look for a new ergo office chair for HOME (4.9%), you would think that falls under FURNITURE (4.9%), but no, most of them fall under Office Products (2.8%)

  • Anyone know what air fryers come under, the one i was looking at came under small kithcen appliances which was under household appliances. I wasnt sure if thats under household and health or electric or. …

    • Hmm I just checked on camelcamel, it comes up under Kitchen for category and Product. does that mean it falls under the kitchen and dining category and hence is eligible for cashback?

  • +1

On top of this kerfuffle, do I have to remove everything from my cart, write down the items, then click through and add them again, to activate the Westpac bonus?

    • +1

You gotta have an empty cart when you click through and then add items back in. Otherwise they might not track.
