Virgin Money Velocity Flyer Card: 30,000 Bonus Velocity Points with $1,500 Spend Each Month for 2 Months, $64 First Year Fee

670

This deal has been renewed, H/T @Spazmos who posted the previous deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/791824

You can also use @hotdish's tip to get an extra 5,000 points: When doing the application online, don't upload your proof of income documents immediately. They will call you, likely in the next business day, and offer an extra 5,000 points to finish the application. I used this and can confirm that this works. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14458411/redir)

Earn up to 60,000 bonus Velocity Points. Receive 30,000 points for each month you spend $1,500 or more on eligible purchases in the first 2 months from card approval.

I asked over the phone for the meaning of "first 2 months". They mean the first two statement cycles (not calendar months), the first statement cycle starts the date the card is approved.

$64 annual fee in the first year, $129 in the second year.

$129 Virgin Australia travel credit.

Minimum Credit Limit: $6,000

Minimum Income: $35,000

Offer is available to new and approved Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card account holders who apply by 4 March 2024. No exclusion period for previous customers.

        • Got another text but no call yet…

        • +2

Just got the call and can confirm they offered me 5k points

          • @Koipanda: Bugger, i should've waited!

          • @Koipanda: good to know! i will wait 2 days

            • @crackman: Applied last night, waiting on the call but I did receive a text that I need to submit documents by the 15th? Is it ok to wait until tomorrow see if I get the call or will my application get cancelled.

          • @Koipanda: @Koipanda: May be a silly question but to get 5000 rewards points, do you need to have Virgin Go or Boost Saver account? or do they mean 5000 velocity points.

  • where does 60k points get you? have never used velocity/qantas points previously

    • Couple of return economy airfares within Oz, e.g, SYD-PER-SYD plus SYD-MEL-SYD

      Or

One way economy SYD-NYC with United (via LAX/SFO)

  • Anyone know if you can use this card to make BPAY payments ( for Rent, Bills etc.)? Tried looking at the fine print, didn't seem like they were excluded transactions, but unsure if it's even possible on their app to make those sort of payments.

Not sure how I'd make the $1500 spend per month if those weren't included..

    • How about paying off your rent?

    • Sniip app lets you turn a BPay into a purchase, although you have to pay a credit card surcharge. There's a referral program to make the first one free.

    • I make BPAY payments for free through Zip.

      • After making the payment, do you use your CC to pay off Zip? Is that considered as a cash advance?

        • CC, not considered as cash advance.

      • Do you get a credit check or active line of credit on your file from having a Zip account?

  • I applied for this over the weekend and got approved yesterday. I had the AMEX last month too. So all new to churning credit cards. But i was wondering if I could use this to pay off my AMEX to get the points?

    • No, you can't use a credit card to pay for another credit card. Banks are not stupid.

      • Yes you can - aren't they called balance transfers?

        • Ah, that different, but i get what you after.

I was under impression that you wanted to use Bpay from one cc to another.

Of course you can apply for balance transfer to clear your debt on a different card. To get points or not you must read their T&Cs.

  • I haven't uploaded my documents yet but just received an email requesting they be uploaded. The email says they are going to verify my income as well.

Let one of the following people know that Virgin Money will be calling to check your income details:
    • If you are employed - your payroll officer or HR team

I have never had this before when applying for a credit card. I don't want them calling my workplace?

    • +1

They will never call. Privacy law won't allow your employer to tell them anything.

  • +2
    • 15th Feb, applied online in the morning. Received email confirmation and subsequent emails asking for documents to be uploaded
    • 16th Feb AM, received reminder again via SMS and email for documents
    • 16th Feb PM, missed their call. Called them back, was promised 5000 bonus points if I submitted all required docs in the next few hours. The application guy pretty much stayed on the phone waiting for me to email back my documents. He did a check over my payslips and rental statements for ~5mins. Said I will get an outcome via SMS and email in 24 to 48 hours. Card takes 4 - 5 days to arrive but can start using my virtual card earlier if required. Got approved officially 5 mins after hanging up the call.
    • Just called them for my virtual card but was told it doesn't exist until I get my physical card to add 'virtually' due to being a new customer. Let me know if you were able to get yours!

      • I just checked my mobile app, you're right, no new card or account so not sure too how I could active it without the physical card. Maybe I will check again tomorrow but perhaps the guy misunderstood me.

        • @firestint: In order to get 5000 rewards points, do you need to have Virgin Go or Boost Saver account? or do they mean 5000 velocity points.

          • +1

@Reviewer21: Velocity points, I asked for a reference number but the guy insisted that he has that recorded in the system.

Anyway, a week since I got approved and nothing yet in my mailbox wtf

            • @firestint: Thank you mate. Appreciate you clarifying on this else I was wondering if I have to open one of their transaction account.

    • I got no call for bonus points but several SMS and emails after starting my application. Maybe because I didn't go far enough in the application process. Oh well

      Just waiting for approval now

    • @firestint any chance you could share the phone number for the call centre? Hoping to call them ahead of time and still have them honour the 5000 bonus points

      • Just the generic helpline 133739 and they routed me to the card application team. Maybe mention that in your call?

        • Thanks mate, I called and they informed me I had to wait for their backend team to review my application first and they'd call me if the bonus point promotion was still on offer

      • Did you call and did they honour extra.bonus point's?

    • Finally received the card after 10 days, 7 working days in total.

      • That’s slow, mind to share if you are living in regional area?

        • Lol no, Metro Melbourne, South Eastern suburb. Virgin Money is just slower compared to other banks, plus AusPost now delivering letters only on alternate days makes a difference too

          • @firestint: That’s bad…
For others card, usually will see them in the mailbox less than a week.
It will be better if virgin money can just provide digital card like the big banks.

  • Closed last September 23 after getting the flight credits and promotion points from Virgin. Thinking whether I should be holding or apply . Please suggest

    • Similar position, except I closed mine only a few weeks ago - but I've already churned Westpac recently and went with the Qantas Amex, so wondering whether I can get away with a sneaky last min application before the March deadline, given it's my only option

      Did you end up applying?

      • I also closed mine last month. Im going to to give it a go on the last week of march

        • @ashyboy just be aware that this particular Virgin offers seems to close in a few days.. not sure if it'll be the same offer then. I'm debating whether to apply now or wait until the end of March and hope its extended.

Edit: Ah I see the annual fee is increasing from $129 -> $149 from 5th March, so expect this will become a $74 credit card fee in a few days

  • For the first 2 months, is it referring to the statement period(30days?) or calendar month?

    • +1

Statement period. First period starts on the date you are approved.

  • Any idea how much time is safe in between closing of this card and re-applying again ? I’m hoping to apply this before it expires and to take the 200 status credit benefits

  • +5

Closed my Virgin money CC in Dec 2023. Reapplied 15 Feb and was approved a few days later after providing documents.

Got all the same emails stating spend 1500 two months in a row for max bonus points and the flight credit.

    • Cool, i was closed back in Dec/23 as well. Will give this a shot again.

    • Update: got paid my bonus points after my first statement without issue (30,000)

  • Finally have been approved. I already have money in the Virgin Boost Saver account will this new credit card link up with my existing Virgin Money mobile app account

    • They can be view in one app but actually like accounts from two different banks. You can't setup auto CC payment from debit card directly - need to fill a form. When you pay your credit card from the VM debit account, it can take up to 2 days to see the transaction in the CC account.

  • Apply online by 4 March 2024. Spend criteria, fees, charges & conditions apply.

Does any know what their next offer might be after 4 March?

  • how long would it takes to get approved?
Received call and uploaded doc last week but no approval yet

    • +1

straight away for me. i applied for minimum limit though

  • +1

applied last night, got a text this morning for documents, got a call at 5pm to ask for 1 payslip and 5k bonus points. approved shortly after

  • Are the points automatically transferred to my velocity account?

    • I believe so, it’s not a reward card like others that you can manually transfer to velocity

    • Yes, 30K bonus points plus 30K for the first month $1500 minimum spend were in my Velocity account the same day my first monthly statement was generated.

  • Does anyone know how many days after your application got approved to your statement cut off date? 30 days?

Trying to pool stuff that I need to pay in advance to be eligible for the minimum spending. Cheers

  • Applied up to employment page and keep getting "Oops - something went wrong". Retried several times and same error.

    • Same thing happened to me yesterday and today. I tried a new application and it worked. Virgin suggested I save instead of continue. Not sure if that worked or a coincidence.

  • +1

I had a Virgin Money card like 10 years ago. It was painful to cancel, kept re-opening somehow and was still on my credit file recently. I'm pretty sure they had a data breach at some point too. 30k points doesn't seem like a lot to me either.

    • Don't know about the data breach part, but my Virgin Money CC was closed back in Dec last year already marked CLOSED on my credit file.

10-years is a long time, a lot of things had changed since the Banking Royal Commission back in 2017.

  • Does anyone know what happens tomorrow? I have submitted everything except payslip. Would I change over to the new offer given the last day is today? I have been holding out for the extra 5k but haven’t received the call yet.

    • +2

Bonus goes off when you applied, not when you are approved. You'll get this offer.

    • +2

I'm in a similar position. I applied and was conditionally approved (pending payslips) on Friday 1 March. Have been holding out for the phone call but as of Tuesday morning now I still haven't been called. Got a few text and email reminders but not in a huge rush to get the card so might give it another day or two and see if there's a call.

      • +1

Yeah I am not sure if I am going to get the call, maybe they have exhausted their allocation of free points. I had a sydney number ring out once on the day of my application (also 1st March) but couldnt pick up fast enough to answer.

  • Anyone know how long it takes to credit the bonus points? Just finished my first statement and only seeing the earned points in my velocity. Spent just over 1800 in first month no gov spend etc.

    • +1

from the discussion above, it should be on the same day when first monthly statement was generated.

      • Cheers thanks for that. Had to call up and speak to customer service. They looked into it agreed I should have got the points and raised a case. Will post back when I hear back. Kinda annoying I had to call though.

Nice people though only 15 minutes

  • +2

Approved last week and missed the OzB memo on waiting to supply documents for the extra 5000 points. Called back and the operator applied the extra 5000 after the fact as a goodwill gesture. Thanks OP

  • Extended to 14 May 2024

  • +1

hey all, sharing this as an additional data point for anyone interested in success rate of closing and then re-applying for this card.

i had this card late last year and closed it in Dec 2023.

i applied again in early March 2023, did not receive auto-rejection and was told to upload the documents within 1 business day of application. I actually missed their call and when I called them back to ask about that 5,000 extra point thing, the person on the phone kindly agreed to put it as a note on the profile (even though they said they weren't familiar with that extra promotion)

i got approved about 2 business days after submitting my documents.

i am actually very impressed with the application process. despite the really ancient banking interface (it uses a rebranded version of the attrocious Citibank Australia platform). compare this to Amex who rejected me instantly for the Velocity Platinum card and i have to wait for a PHYSICAL LETTER (unforgivable in today's day and age) to know the reason for my rejection.

    • What documents did they ask? Just payslips?

      • +1

2 payslips and proof of employment letter

  • +4

Just so everybody knows you have to speak directly to the ‘Applications’ team to get the bonus 5k. You can call them directly on 1800 807 138. I advised I knew someone who got it and submitted my payslip on the spot. It’s actually the Citibank line but they handle Virgin CCs as well (must be why the portal is a rebranded Citi one).

    • +1

Have been waiting on the bonus points call but will call them now to see if I can get it going.

Edit: Just called and was told that my application (submitted in the morning on Friday 1 March) was still in the "background checks" stage and wasn't ready for verification as yet so they weren't able to apply the points.

I have done everything except submit my payslips as proof of income/employment - is there anything else people have been doing here to get the call?

      • +1

        same! It's taking forever

        • +1

I ended up just submitting my payslips after that phone call.

I've had a few manufactured spend opportunities show up that I want to chuck onto the card in the next couple of weeks so I decided I can live without the 5k points for the free min spend. (I'm buying the tickets and doing the booking for a group event so they'll all pay me back their shares)

That said, once approved I'll call again and try to get it retroactively applied as a few comments have mentioned doing.

          • @daanish: how long after you submitted them did you get approved?

@Phora @ilovefood12345 I applied on Monday (and submitted all docs), and as of today it is still being processed. Gave them a call, and they still couldn't give any more info.

            • @bohn: I'm still not approved. My timeline so far:

Friday 1 March (AM): Applied online and was conditionally approved. Did not submit payslips or proof of employment documents in the hopes of getting the 5k bonus points call.
Thursday 7 March (AM): Called the Applications team as per my above comment to try and squeeze out the 5k points and have the processing done while I was on the phone. Was told it was stuck in background checks still so they couldn't do anything about the points or verification.
Thursday 7 March (PM): Submitted payslips online.
Wednesday 13 March (AM): Called Applications team again to follow up and was told they are having some system issues that are causing delays with application approvals. Mine is apparently still stuck at background checks and hasn't come through to verification as yet. They will try to have it completed by end of the week.
Friday 15 March (PM): At time of writing this comment, I am still not approved. Did not follow up after Wednesday but will be calling first thing on Monday morning.

Seems like you and are both stuck at about the same stage.

              • @daanish: Same they are telling me there was a technical glitch on March 6 and now it’s with the technical team for 7 days but then I got a call for background checks again yest which I did 2 days ago when I called. It’s a real mess

                • @ilovelollies: Interesting - between 1 March and 6 March I received a few SMS/Email reminders saying "We're still waiting on some additional docs…" or "We need some additional docs…" but after I submitted my docs on 7 March I got an SMS the next day saying

"Hi DAANISH, it looks like something went wrong with the document upload for your Virgin Money…."

When I called them on the Wednesday 13 March to follow up the rep did some extra verification stuff and confirmed that all my documents had been correctly received and he could view it but the application was still stuck in the system.

I wonder if I got a delayed text about whatever this technical glitch is that you were told about.

              • +1

                @daanish: what a mess.

                • @bohn: if it doesn't get resolved soon, I'm tempted to just revoke the application and apply for a Westpac card. The deal isn't as good on paper but it doesn't matter how good this deal is if I can't actually get it across the line.

                  • @daanish: unfort I can't do a westpac and various others just yet .. so I would really like this - plus you get the 30k from the other velocity deal.

90k + the flight voucher for this annual fee is pretty good.

                    it's definitely annoying though

                    • @bohn: Oh yeah, it's a ripper deal so I would like to get this one but if it all falls over I can still get the bonus 30k on the Westpac deal too.

I'm not going to cry about the flight voucher. I fly a lot for work so cheaper leisure flying is not dealbreaker/priority for me.

                      • +1

@daanish: yeah I often sell the flight voucher

                        • @bohn: I honestly didn't even think about that. I'll probably do that and offset the annual fee then.

                          • +1

@daanish: yeah this card always ends up making me a profit

        • +1

          Same here.

Conditionally approved on the a week ago and still waiting. Gave them a call and they told me to wait another 48 hours which is strange. Never had to wait this long before with other banks.

          • @Phora: Same - I had that all last week and called yesterday and got told 24-48hrs again.

          • +1

@Phora: Any updates? Am still waiting on my end

            • @ilovelollies: Haven't heard anything. Looks like I'll have to chase them up again.

              • @Phora: got a declined email today, even though conditionally approved

                • @ilovefood12345: @daanish @Phora just got an approval SMS.. About time

                  • @bohn: I didn't actually call them this morning. Got caught up with a few things - will give them a call shortly and see what they say.

                    • @daanish: I got a declined as apparently I have an arrears with a previous credit card that has been closed but I don’t ever recall this happening. No luck for me

                  • @bohn: I just received an approval SMS too. I had to follow them up numerous times over the past two weeks after consistently being advised "you will receive an outcome in the next 24 to 48 hours".
