Virgin Money Velocity Flyer Card: 30,000 Bonus Velocity Points with $1,500 Spend Each Month for 2 Months, $64 First Year Fee

670

This deal has been renewed, H/T @Spazmos who posted the previous deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/791824

You can also use @hotdish's tip to get an extra 5,000 points: When doing the application online, don't upload your proof of income documents immediately. They will call you, likely in the next business day, and offer an extra 5,000 points to finish the application. I used this and can confirm that this works. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14458411/redir)

Earn up to 60,000 bonus Velocity Points. Receive 30,000 points for each month you spend $1,500 or more on eligible purchases in the first 2 months from card approval.

$64 annual fee in the first year, $129 in the second year.

$129 Virgin Australia travel credit.

Minimum Credit Limit: $6,000

Minimum Income: $35,000

                  • @bohn: Called them about 10 minutes ago and they gave me the standard your application has been submitted for processing and we'll contact you in 24-48 hours. As usual that puts you to the top of the processing pile and I just received my email/SMS confirming approval.

                    I guess we're finally here.

        • I just got an approval SMS as well this afternoon. Originally called them after the 48 hours they told me to wait and they told me to call the NAB approvals team the second time but they weren't helpful either.

          • @Phora: @bohn Card arrived in the mail yesterday to metro Brisbane. Time to smash out the spend.

  • Anyone knows if the travel voucher can be requested after first statement?

    • +2

T&Cs say you can request after 30 days from the day your card is approved.

    Just checked my Velocity account, I haven't received my first statement from Virgin Money but can confirm that all the points have been sent to my Velocity account;

    • 30k from meeting $1.5k spend
    • 30k from this deal. Not sure if we will receive another lot of 30k in the 2nd month?
    • 5k from the application team for submitting my documents
    • some base points from credit card spend. Note that payment to council is not considered an eligible transaction.
    • +1

This is what I got from my expectation of 60k from this card :)

      • All In Campaign Feb 24 30k Bonus Points +30,000 Points
      • FLYER 60K OFFER +30,000 Points
      • DE 30KBPs November Campaign +30,000 Points
      • FLYER 60K OFFER +30,000 Points

      = 120k

      • +1

Expectation should have been 90K not 60K. It was 30K on top of 30K each month for two months of $1500+ spend.

I got the same thing, 120K. I applied in November but it took them nearly two months to sort out the application. I also have the Westpac Altitude Platinum from this deal so waiting to see if I get another 30K bonus or they say I have already received it on this card. Not too bothered either way but an extra 30K points for nothing would be nice.

        • Yep, a few reported getting 2x 30k bonus points, but they have all opted into 2 separate campaigns. So you're probably right that the total points to get is 90k.

    • when did you apply for the card?

      • Applied mid-Jan. But not sure when I activated the different 30k offers.

    • I had to call back the applications team and they said I’ll receive the 5k bonus points (for uploading payslips) 3 months after card being approved. Lucky you that you received in 1st month!

      • yeah i just checked my first statement and i only got the 30k (Virgin Money spend $1.5k) + 30k (Velocity general promotion) points.

i haven't received the 5k bonus points for payslips yet. will call them up and see if they say the same thing regarding 3 months.

  • Hi
I applied to this and used the card to pay car rego + insurance.
Does anyone know if that counts towards eligible transactions? I'm really banking on that it does.

    • Insurance does. Not sure about rego as that is a government payment.

      • I can confirm rego payment is not a valid spend. Called them confirmed the same.

        • :( damn thanks for letting me know

        • So I just called them up and asked them whether my spending was eligible.
He said whilst the rego payment is not eligible for earning points, it still counts as an eligible spend for the minimum spend criteria of the offer. Unfortunately the virgin money online system is pretty bad and I won't know for certain until the statement is generated in a couple weeks when obviously it will be too late.

I think the difference comes from the T&C on the offer webpage vs T&C document for earning velocity points. It seems like government transactions are only excluding when trying to earn points.

Offer T&C (I saved a copy before applying):
          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/130117/111459/screensh…

T&C from Rewards Program for High Flyer and Flyer Cardholders:
          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/130117/111460/screensh…

          • @supbah: Yeah, I thought the same based on the T&C. But given the customer service specifically told me the rego payment doesn't qualify as valid spend for this offer, I just purchased some gift cards to be on safe side and to avoid the hassle of arguing with the customer service to get points in case they decline them.

Given they confirmed it verbally, you should be able to get the points based on that if they don't deposit them.

            • @rvsure: Now I'm wondering whether I should get some gift cards just to be on the safe side

              • @supbah: Or book some refundable flights/hotel.

Personally I wouldn't risk it. I'd rather have a clear and obvious transaction than have to argue with CS about it.

    • Maybe you can use Sniip to pay with a very small fee

      • Already paid unfortunately

  • Closed this card November last year, anyone had any luck reapplying?

    • +1

I closed this in Dec/24, just apply early this month without problem.

      Also, see here

    • I closed mine in mid-Feb and seem to have been approved again.. was a bit nervous; but I was trying to get the bonus 30k points from this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830988) and was already serving the waiting periods for AMEX and Westpac so didn't have much choice given you had to apply by the end of March.

  • Do Strata payments, Rates, Energy and Water bills count towards earning Velocity points?
I can see above that rego counts towards monthly spend but not velocity points.

    • +1

In my experience across the variety of other credit cards I've had - energy usually does because it's not a goverment or gov related service (at least it isn't for me in South East Queensland). Rego and rates it's probably better to assume they won't count or will fall into the reduced government services payout rate (if applicable to that specific card), I don't know about water or strata though as I've never had to pay these bills.

If you're unsure that your payment will count and you can't manufacture the spending elsewhere you can launder your credit card through an Activ Visa/Coles Mastercard Gift Card type card offer to guarantee that the spending counts for min spend and regular points earn. I've done this plenty of times to pay bills on my parents behalf when needing to manufacture a spend.

      • At the end of the day, as long as things count towards min monthly spend I’m happy as.

  • Any suggestions on what to do with the $129 travel credit if me and my partner don't intend to travel domestically? I notice if we do travel domestically/internationally, other airlines like Jetstar would be cheaper.

Can it be used for hotels?

    • Sell the credit

    • Wait for sale fares - they are occasionally just $20 expensive than Jetstar.

      • Thank you.

selling could be an option, but not much experience with classified so prefer not to atm

  • Applied recently and they have requested to confirm my employment dierectly with my HR/payroll department - is this normal?!

    • I've done probably 20+ cards over the last 4-5 years and have never had this occur across any bank/card provider. I assume you've supplied payslips/contract etc already?

    • +1

Interesting, was that a direct request from them? Never have go thru HR to get CC before.

    • Gave them a call and they said it was automated and that they didnt actually need to contact payroll. T'was approved. Weird.

  • Has anyone attempted to apply for this card three times in 6 months and get paid out?

I'm on back to back applications (2 months, get points/voucher and close then re-apply)… Assume you can churn indefinitely!?

    • +1

Curious to know how long you waited after cancelling before re-applying. Planning on doing my first back to back soon.

      • +1

I reapplied after 3 months of closure the previous one. I can see someoneo had applied after 1 month.

      • +3

I closed my 1st Virgin Money CC after I got paid out my bonuses (2 x 30k points) and gift voucher. J waited about a week and applied again. Got approved and now I'm about to cancel the 2nd card. And will look to keep going until I'm rejected.

  • Does anyone know how is a customer supposed to get the $129 travel credit?

    The website says:
Use your Virgin Australia Gift Voucher, provided as a Virgin Australia Travel Bank credit, when booking Virgin Australia flights on any fare type (including sale fares). You can redeem your voucher any time within 12 months of the issue date.

But it doesn't say how we are meant to receive the credit. e.g. are we supposed to:
    - click a button the webapp, or
    - call them, or
    - it would be automatically credited to your velocity account?

  • +2

I called and tried getting the annual fee refunded, or at least a portion of it. Declined on the basis that I've received the 60k bonus points. Didn't try pushing harder or call in again given the fee was only $64. YMMV.

    • same

    • They told me they'd give me the refund but it would be a mailed cheque. I haven't received it yet.

      • Lucky you! How long did you hold the card for and was this the very first time you got this card?

        • First time, had it for a bit over two months.

  • What's a realistic price for selling the $129 travel credit? Was thinking ~$70?

  • Did anyone received the 5000 bonus points for submitting documents after call by their application team?
I got 60000 points from the sign-up offer already but didn't receive the 5000 points, anyway to follow up this?
There are no reference number provided when they give the offer during the call, I wonder how to make them to honor it.

  • Is first statement generated after 30 days or end of calendar month?

    • I think their statement cycles seem to run around the 21/22 of each month to 21/22nd of the next month.

My card arrived to me on 26 March and first statement was 19 to 20 March and then the next one where I actually spent money, was charged the annual fee and received my first round of 30k bonus points was 21 March - 21 April. So I guess the first one was just to "align" me with their system.

      • Does that mean that you don't really have a full month to spend 1.5k for the first month due to their statement calendar cycle?

        • I did have the same thought. In my case it was 26 March to 20 April so a little less than a full cycle but you'd be livid if it was something like 4 or 5 days.

Hopefully other people can reply with their dates so we can get an idea of how it works.

  • I just applied for the travel voucher yesterday, does anyone know how long it would take them to approve that? I know it says 10 business days, but I am wondering if it could be faster
