Apple MacBook Pro M2 Max 2023, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Space Grey, 14” $3,997 Metro Delivered/OnePass/in-Store Pickup @ Officeworks

550

I came across this discounted MacBook on Officeworks while searching for a new one. It was previously listed on OzBargain (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/826683) but is now $500 cheaper. I’m considering purchasing the refurbished M1 Pro model for my needs, but wanted to share this deal in case anyone else could benefit from it. Silver colour is $200 more if you prefer that.

  • Wow, didn't even know they are a thing with that much ram

    • +25

Should be the minimum for a Pro device imo.

        • +8

Wild idea… hear me out… they could price them the same as the 16GB?

      • +1

16GB is actually pretty decent on the M1/2/3 units. I got a 16GB M1 Pro with the intent of using it for portable work but it's so quick it became my primary machine. My Ryzen 9 desktop with 32GB starts hitting the page file under around the same workloads.

Do wish I'd gotten 32GB though if I knew it was good enough to be my primary machine, and would recommend 32 for serious users but 16gb holds up to quite a lot

    • +1

They can go up to 128GB… 👀

      • +1

Ok that I did not know. Probably hitting five-figure territory there, and you know that you wouldn’t stop at 1TB for the disk.

        • A$7,849.00 seems to be the cheapest 128GB model (with the 1TB SSD)
          A9,349.00 if you want 4TB

    • My old clevo P170em that's 10 years old has 32GB RAM. Not soldered too.

Unfortunately, these are still poorly built ask Louis Rossmann.

    • We run 64GB ones at work.

  • +3

I wish they had the 64GB 4TB offer still available. Legit deal, missed out.

    • +1

How much was it? My sweet spot is 64GB/2TB, but 4TB would last me ant least until 2030 for a refresh.

      • +1

        14' 64/2tb was 3149$ and 16' 64/4tb was 3999$

arguably a far better deal given how little realistic gains there is between the m1 max and m2 max

        • Thanks for the link, now I know I probably bought my used, sealed in box 14 inch from a scalper of that deal :D

  • Good luck finding any stock. The only store I saw with anything was Russell St Melbourne showing limited stock, so more n likely not.

    thanks bought 3

  • +3

Not 8 gb ram no thanks

I have this, but the M1 Max, and it is a goddamn beast.
Battery life is insane (unless I'm playing BG3)
Chews through any programming task I throw at it
Can actually keep docker containers running
    Beautiful machine, great display.

    • Battery life would be better if you bought the Pro instead. Max chews through the battery for only slightly better performance.

    • To be fair, I keep 4 docker containers running along with 4vms on a shitty N95 $260 micro pc consuming 6w or so - depending on what you do keeping them running requires very few resources.

not a bad deal! Apple Certified Refurbished has M1 Max 16" version of this for $25 more

    https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/FK1A3X/A/refurbished-1…

worth checking out if you're after 16 inches instead. 32 / 1TB, too

Wish I could do that with the iPad Pro..

Sadly the largest iPad size still is only 12.9" while the Galaxy Tab S Ultra is 14.6".

    • +7

Wish I could that to myself

      • +2

will you use the extra two inches though?

    • or see my comment above for 2 inches more same price but M1 Max

I wonder how much a machine like this would cost if Apple operated at the same margin's as the likes of Dell for example? I realise these are a premium machine and perform well, but boy, that price point, even as a deal, is a lot to swallow, especially for a machine that is non-upgradaeble and essentially non-repairable.

    • Their margins are very healthy.

This is why I've settled on Macbooks as a client device, with a beefy desktop for processing.

The entry-level Macbook Airs are actually competitively priced with Windows equivalents. In terms of build quality and CPU performance, they hold their own, and you can often get models with 16GB RAM for a good price on the Apple Refurbished store. Plus, I strongly prefer macOS for general use.

Yet you can't beat a beefy desktop PC for upgradeability, storage capacity and raw performance. Particularly for ML workloads. So it does the actual processing.

Between VSCode Remote Development, SSH, web UIs hosted on the desktop (e.g. Jupyter Notebooks, TensorBoard), and RDP when needed, remote execution is no real hassle when compared to working locally. However, by splitting the processing across the Macbook and desktop PC, you get the best of both worlds.

They can't be compared spec-to-spec imo. I've been on Windows my whole life and Apple silicon is leagues ahead. I got an M1 Pro w/ 16GB as a portable solution for for Ryzen 9 desktop w/ 32GB & 2080 and the M1 is actually as fast or faster in all but the most intense 3D tasks to the point where it's now my primary machine.

RAM also seems to cap out with similar levels of workload on both and I usually have Photoshop open with multiple layers, run Capture one and Resolve. Nothing ever slows down unless I have lots of absolutely massive files open

  • At least the Pro model on offer here has three TB USB-C ports - which means that it has two internal fans for cooling.

The low-end Pro models which shave off a TB port and an internal fan as well (the lefthand one) aren't that much of a bargain performance-wise, because they don't cool as well under load. Don't buy a low-end Pro and up its RAM/SSD, start with a minimum of three TB ports instead and the larger RAM it brings. Better value.

Apple mangled a USB port to give Magsafe3, I think I'd rather have had another USB-C port, too.

  • nice deal, anyone know where to be on the lookout for a 14 pro, m1/m2 max, 64gb+ 2tb+ ssd model? been bummed since I missed out on the deal a few weeks/months ago..

  • ARM Windows laptops are entering the market soon, probably 2nd half. I’m trying to hold off purchase probably till end of the year, giving enough time for the geeks to do enough reviews on the new machines :)

  • +1

Personally I prefer the 16" screen, it's worth the extra cost and discomfort of carrying it around IMHO. I stopped using external screens after getting it :)

I've had many windows laptops in the past (incl Microsoft Surface). Although you'd save on upfront capital with windows-based, you'll be better off in the long run with MBP.
My missus's MBP is still running perfectly after more than 10 years. And most of the windows laptops I owned failed after 2-4 years of usage (typically battery & screen issues)

  • You can also use the SD card slot with a big fast card to extend the storage a bit. Handy for stuff where you don't need the speed and you can just leave it in there permanently.

  • Just had my online order cancelled by OW without a reason. Guess they are out of stock?

    • I just bought one online two days ago and picked up yesterday.

  • Just checked again, out of stock. Only silver available

    • You’re probably the lucky last! I went last evening and put it an order for the silver. That’s the colour I wanted, but couldn’t justify the extra 200 bucks. Regardless, it’s still a good price and didn’t have a choice anyway 🙂

  • Shouldn't this deal be marked as expired?
