Great deal on the Chromecast with Google TV 4K almost matches the previous low of $48 each. This deal comes to $49.50 each. If someone needs 2 then that's a great deal.

    • +11

Thought this was sarcasm till I got to the part where its for 2.

    • +2

      Agreed great deal

Kinda tempted to get two to replace my two 4k fire sticks. Just prefer google ui.

      • +2

Or you could do as I have done and flash android tv onto the fire sticks..

        • had no idea this was even a thing??? damn!

        • Curious of what features we add by installing Android TV that the Fire TV OS doesn't have. Any chance you could list your favorite ones?

    • Yes i paid $29 for HD version during google site BF sale last year, this 4K at this price is good deal !!!

  • How to find what other items are available?

    • These were all of the BOGOF items that came in the email newsletter

Anyway, shit like this is why I ended up going with Apple TVs in all the rooms after suffering with the Google Nexus Player back in the day.

Yes, because I'm sure the Apple TV was also not a bumbling mess 10 years ago…

Sure they're more expensive, but they just work and that's what I want from a device I use everyday.

I have a Google TV that I use every day that also "just works".

They've been consistently good since the 2015 HD model. Prior to that, they were reliable, but limited in features.

            • @PainToad:

Sure, but I don't see how your experience with the Google Nexus Player from 10 years ago should inform your opinion of the Google TV today.

Either way, I think the comparison with the Apple TV is broadly irrelevant, as they cost $200-250, compared to ~$50 for this Google TV 4K. Ultimately, it's just in a completely different market segment being 4-5x more expensive.

Of course it's better / faster / smoother than the Google TV, it's not because Apple has magic sauce, it's because it costs 4-5x as much.

        • I don't have apple tv but I can absolutely bet functionality is restricted in some way if you don't purchase via apple, or want to integrate it with non apple products, or want to keep it more than 2 or 3 years without it slowing to a crawl

          • @MikeKulls: I'm still running Apple TV 4th Gens from 2016 so 8 years old and they run as good as the day they were bought. Lightning quick compared to the google tv dongle I put at my parents.

If you just want to stream from the standard providers or a plex server etc.

The only real issue is they still don't support a couple of the newest Dolby codecs and arnt hackable to the extent a firestick is etc.

but for a stable streaming device that doesn't suck to navigate, its the winner by a country mile.

            • @lordz89: Both of mine are the 2017 4K model, both are silky smooth.

      • Yeah my folks have one for Plex but they hit this bug a lot unfortunately.

It's not all about the hardware.

      • +2

        That's what she said

      • -2

Google sucks as software too. Great combo.

    • +2

Well firstly the new 4k max never gets under 50 from what I've seen to date so it's more expensive. Also it doesn't use the Google Play store so there's a fair few apps you can't install without messing around and sideloading which isn't everyone's cup of tea. Functionality-wise you can't cast to a FireTV (yes, you can stll 'second-screen' depending on the app but it isn't using the CC protocol and isn't available in all the same places, can't necessarilly be controlled from Android notification shade etc). Not to mention if people are alrady ballsdeep in Google's ecosystem it's nice to have Google Assistant on the device instead of Alexa (just as opposite also true).

Pure specs-wise, 4k is 'better' you're right. But usability plays a big role in a lot of people's purchasing decisions and for some the FireTV is the poorer choice. As a matter of personal opinion I prefer the (apps-only) Google UI to FireTV which is far too busy for my liking, for example.

Of course, a lot of this is subjective, just pointing out a few of the reasons why this may be preferable.

I don't think it's as simple as saying pony up the bit extra and get a completely different device because it's specs are better.

The FireOS is definitely ugly, I agree. But the Google TV OS is pretty bad too, but slightly better.

The AppleTV OS is by far the best imo. No ads. No bloat.

        • +6

They better have no ads with how much they cost

    • I recently tested both and ended up returning the Chromecast tv 4k because the frame rate matching was very buggy and caused stutters.

Firestick 4k Max plays everything without issue. Also is able to much higher bitrate files and better wifi.

    • Not sure why negged, but I agree with you.

      • Not sure why negged

Google fans don't like hearing about other options so they lashout.

Moral of the story, always let people know you're intention is to split the cost.
