GUYS I MANAGED TO GET IT TO WORK IN MINUTES HAHAHAHAHAHSHDBQWEBJ (sorry I'm just so happy). Payment proof :)

ok ok before we get too excited, as always:

Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions (Nigerian Edition)

Netflix has once again rolled out a 2nd price hike for Türkiye within 4 months. I said enough is enough, and decided to explore other avenues. Decided to test the Nigerian Prince to see if he'd give in. I did encounter some errors, but somehow managed to bypass them within minutes. The result? I managed to sign up to the world's cheapest Netflix (or second cheapest, idk lol) in less than 10 minutes (without gift cards), and for the record, it was my first time trying as well. That's insane in my books. There is also no 30 day local region restriction as confirmed by myself and you guys.

This guide is the latest updated guide I've made so far (with screenshots)! Please see the statistics section below for an interesting read and show some love. Any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

  • Nigeria is the cheapest country in the world for Netflix. See plan prices below.
  • Turkey is no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they keep increasing prices every few months.
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremely easy and effortless, making it one of the easiest and therefore cheapest country to sign up with.
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up is almost impossible. Egypt is the next cheapest, but impossible to sign up for the same reason. If you have a bank card locally from these countries, feel free to sign up directly otherwise.
  • @Scrooge McDeal's post for Netflix Kenya is slightly cheaper than Netflix Turkey, however many members have had their memberships cancelled and payments refunded.

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully. Please review screenshots at each step if you are stuck.

  1. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Nigeria. I used Surfshark VPN (Shopback currently has 98% cashback)!

    https://my.surfshark.com

  2. Open Netflix on a new tab (not being logged in), enter your email (a new one, preferredly) and press "get started" (see screenshot):

    https://www.netflix.com/

  3. On the "Step 1 of 3" page, press "Next", then set a password. On the "Step 2 of 3" page, press "Next", then choose your desired membership plan, then press "Next". On the "Step 3 of 3" page, click "Credit or Debit Card" then enter your CC or Debit details (I used Suncorp Debit Card). Tick "I agree" then press "Start Membership". If you get a payment error, try a different Credit or Debit Card and try again.

  4. If the payment method is accepted, then the next page will be phone number verification (I'M SO SORRY I DIDN'T GET A SCREENSHOT OF THIS PAGE AS I COULDN'T GET THE PAGE AGAIN AFTER). I entered a random number in from the PingMe app and it redirected me to the next page to enter the verification code. PingMe didn't send me a code and it was dinner time so what I did was back click on the browser to the previous page (the payment page). I entered the payment debit card again and it works as expected, bringing me to a new phone verification page (or so I thought). This page (after reading it carefully) actually said "Welcome to Netflix! You've started your membership and emailed the details to [email protected], with a mobile option to set up password recovery (just ignore this). I pressed "Next" and voila - I'm now on Netflix Nigeria baby! At this stage you're done! Enjoy your membership :)

You can probably use PingMe (similar to Turkey deal) and it will still work I think. I couldn't try as I managed to bypass the phone verification step as explained above, but if anyone wants to give it a try let me know.

FAQ

Q: I just got a "Payment Declined - Update Payment Method" email from Netflix. What do I do?
A: This issue is being reported by many people who have recently signed up to Netflix Nigeria. They seem to only a few months after signing up, but once fixed, it usually does not happen again. There are two ways to get around this issue:

  1. You can contact Netflix Live Chat and enquire about the "Payment Declined" issue. Make sure you chat with your Nigerian VPN activated. If they ask, say you're in Nigeria for a holiday, or came up with another excuse. Tell them that your payment has declined and you'd like to add a new credit/debit card. They should (if not, request them to) be able to send a payment form popup directly on the chat so you can add your new payment details. If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one. Once the payment is accepted, the "Payment Declined" issue shouldn't occur ever again.

  2. Log into your Netflix account and update your payment method (Nigeria phone number required). When you follow the prompts to update your payment method, Netflix will require a Nigerian number. You can use the PingMe service to obtain a Nigerian phone number for the purposes of this SMS verification. It will cost you a few dollars to buy credits for the purpose of receiving this SMS. Download the PingMe app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store. Create an account, and recharge with "coins" (credits). 1 coin ($2.99 AUD @ App Store) is enough for 1 Netflix Nigeria SMS verification, but you can also buy 5 coins ($10 AUD @ App Store) for the price of 3 in case you need it in the future. After obtaining your coins, click on the "Verification" tab on the bottom of the app and follow this screenshot: select "Netflix" for the App/Website and "Nigeria (+234)" for the Country/Region. Proceed as per the PingMe app and use that to validate the Netflix SMS verification process.

Q: My current card expired. How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: See the FAQ directly above this question. If you're sticking with the same credit card account (i.e. just getting a new/replacement card against the same account), you may not have to do anything. Your Netflix account may automatically update to your new card details, due to a connection provided by Mastercard, Visa, AMEX, etc. See here and here and here for more details, thanks to @NitroJolt.

Q: How do I add Netflix Nigeria Gift Cards to my Netflix account?
A: There are no Netflix Nigeria Gift Cards available.

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After signing up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move that is only available from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that particular country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN service for this, and most VPN providers should work.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Nigeria going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here. Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

You've already covered u and me

Might as well try hebank, shebank, theybank, thembank etc.

      • Apachebank? Gotta be all inclusive.

Revolut took me 2min to sign up for

    • Cba credit worked for me on desktop and incognito, but didn’t work when I was trying to sign up via iPhone, none of my card were accepted on mobile

  • Thanks OP!

Commbank worked for me and did exactly as you did with going back after 1min waiting on the sms verification.

    • Did you use a phone or computer to sign up?

      • computer, macbook with chrome vpn

  • thanks op, used 28 degrees, 28 degrees blocked it , rang them to unblock, but couldnt use again for some reason on the same account, used another email reg again with 28 degrees and didnt even ask for mobile number for - now setup in lagos

    • Did you get any kind of notification that they blocked it? Or did you just get the "something went wrong" error?

      • Got sms

  • When trying to register it says "Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again later".

    • me too and tried using multiple cards including Revolut which others here have said works… maybe the fun is over
edit: retried the process from the start and it worked with Up virtual card

      • I had this with a few cards, including Revolut. Then put in the card name as my Netflix name I'd entered, rather than my legal name, and it worked.

      • This was actually on the landing page. Still doesn't work. Looks like I may need to stick with Turkey!

Try a different VPN connection, that solved it for me

      • which vpn did you use?

        • The free android app one mentioned earlier in the comment thread. Think most using it (can't remember name sorry and I've uninstalled it)

nah I don't think so. I think the common opinion on OzB is "if I can find a way to beat the system and get the same product cheaper, then why not?".

I expect about zero dollars spent on Netflix Australia remain in Australia. I also assume Netflix is a multinational corporation that keeps their profits, rather than a socialist not-for-profit organisation that redistributes their income to those most in need. There pricing structure is not about offering lower rates in less developed nations to benefit those on low incomes, it's about offering rates in each country that netflix quantify people can still justify paying so that netflix makes a buck.

      • common opinion? the only opinion my bargain hunting friend

      • -2

"beat the system" often translates to a store will put up a price in error ($20 instead of $200) and then you see outrage and fuming when these stores don't honour the honest pricing mistake and start issuing refunds. Yes, I realise not all these errors are honest mistakes.
-or- Do you think Optus pays $800 wholesale for S24 Ultras - when people get one on a 24 month plan and then try to cancel for $800?

I will bargain hunt for products - ie promotions/clearances/specials - but "beating the system" implies actually ripping off the company. I know it might be an unpopular opinion here, but yes, I don't want to rip off businesses by exploiting some technicalities which see them lose money.

"I expect about zero dollars spent on Netflix Australia remain in Australia."

Netflix pays GST on Australian subscriptions. They also produce some local content as well, some of which is reasonably globally successful - eg the recent show set in Brisbane (Boy Swallows Universe).

        • +1

Netflix pays GST on Australian subscriptions

You mean they collect GST from their Australian subscribers on behalf of the ATO? They don’t pay GST themselves.

          • @cynix: Sorry yes poorly worded. There used to be major complaints about netflix being an un-taxed service in Australia, that's what I meant in response to "zero dollars spent on netflix remain in Australia" .. of course that's taxed paid and returned as you said … but …

They actually spend a considerable amount in the local industry.
They would also have to pay something for local data hosting.

Just some pushback against statements like the above - which reckoned zero dollars Australians spend on Netflix gets returned to the local economy.
Of course like other big multi-nationals, they do the scummy tax-haven and other avoidance things (be a subsidiary and pay "admin" costs to their base in another country)

            According to Netflix themselves: https://about.netflix.com/en/news/netflix-surpasses-usd1-bil…

"In the past four years (2019-2023) that we've reported our investment to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), Netflix has invested over $1 billion AUD on new Australian and Australian-related Netflix films and shows. "

So there you have it, subscribing to Netflix Nigeria is hurting the local film & TV industry :P

            • +2

@Mr Noob: If you check your billing, you'll likely find that you've been billed by Netflix International B.V., which is located in the Netherlands. Guess who's not returning fees as income in Australia?

    • +3

Do you think Netflix is losing money by providing the service in Nigeria and doing it as a service to Nigerians (and the Turkish and the Pakistanis, etc)? If so, yes, getting a subs from such a country would be unfair.
The reality, I think, is that Netflix prices their plans according to what they think people will pay

      • The only qualification on that is that Netflix has to pay costs to serve that content using that country's IT infrastructure and that does not come cheap at all in Aus.

That said, if you are using a VPN to that country when using the service Netflix only pays for delivering to that country and the cost equation doesn't change for them then

      • As you say they are offering heavily discounted service to poorer nations because they can't afford to pay what more affluent countries can.

Netflix would instantly go broke if the 150million+ subscribers in the NA/Euro/Japan/Korea + Australia/NZ markets were to suddenly start paying US $2 to $3.50 per month instead of US$12-20+ or so

although Nigeria is ~200m people, in 2023 there were approximately 25,000 subscribers, which would probably get them US$70K/month in subscription - that's only a bit more than the average wage in Australia, for the entire country! Almost certainly not an immensely profitable venture for Netflix to set up there. (Netflix would def make over AU$100m/month here)

Those Nigerian subscription prices can't fund the kind of content Netflix pays for/produces, but as to whether it can fund the bandwidth/server/admin costs for that particular market I don't know. I would think global content rights for these particular markets wouldn't be that expensive, but still something.

On a more serious but related note: It's kinda like how affluent countries pay more for patented pharmaceuticals and put some moral pressure on these same companies to provide such for poorer nations at much reduced prices.

      • Apparently netflix has good competition with showmax a local streaming service in africa

    • You really think Netflix is playing Robin Hood here ? So naive.

      • What is factually incorrect about the following: Netflix is using its income from more affluent countries to provide its service in poorer nations at a reduced cost

If Netflix wanted to charge US prices - or a much more significant portion of their income - I'm sure people would be outraged at Netflix trying to rip off poor countries.

I am by no means saying Netflix is a bastion of morality or great business practices.

An analogy to this OP "bargain" is pretending you're poor (or from a disadvantaged region or particular group) to gain access to cheap/discounted products & services.

Same thing will probably happen here as it did with the Kenyan accounts

    • My thoughts exactly.

  • Can anyone confirm if this allows for multiple users across different households? I.e. currently have no issues with multiple users on premium plan with Turkey. Anyone have issues with this via Nigeria?

    • yes buy the premium Nigerian plan

  • Does phone verification really necessary?

I got the e-mail saying "We’ve added your phone number ending in 90 to your account, as you asked. However, your number must be verified before it can be used to secure your account.
Once verified, it’ll be used to help you access and recover your account."

What if I haven't verified my phone number?

    • +1

I think you might have answered your own question: it’ll be used to help you access and recover your account..
Don't worry about it however don't forget your password and in turn you won't need help recovering your account :-)

      • I stuck with the Netflix webpage now. I used Chrome to open Netflix page, but end up with showing my account information. I can't go back to the main page and select movies now.

used Revolut Card this time thinking NAB Debit might be the whistleblower..
status of the transaction on 14/02 is 'Pending'.. (hoping this might be refunded) …

      • Citibank visa debit closing in a few days, assume you aren't talking about the replacement? You're probably correct, but should still be no overseas fees etc with the replacement. NAB just sounds more local so wouldn't be surprised.

        • True, no overseas fees appearing for this transaction yet, I mainly use HSBC for overseas purchases but that card did not work with Netflix (tried multiple times) for me..

        • Dispute in my favour from NAB and I see a overseas transaction fee now .. don't know if they'll include that in the refund .. either way the monies are not with Netflix :-(

  • This would be a good valentines day gift from nigeria?

  • 80% off a digital service is great. It would be nice if someone could figure out how to purchase computer games at third world prices using VPNs, Virtual Credit Cards and Gift card trickery. I've had no luck so far with Steam, and other services like Fanatical or Gamersgate seem to have blacklisted VPNs.

Even nicer would be 80% off a house in Australia, but you would have to be psychotic to ever think housing will become cheaper in Australia.

    • +3

Buy a cheap 3 bedroom house in Nigeria, cheap netflix and games with no VPN issues then just spend 30% of your savings on vegemite and meat pies and you'll feel right at home. Maybe I'll write up a guide

  • Can I sign up using VPN and then run the account on AppleTV app? Possible?

    • +1

VPN only needed for sign up. Afterwards no VPN needed as you are "travelling".

  • anyone have any luck with the wise credit card?

  • Managed to finally get it working! Initially tried with the free Nigeria Free VPN Android app, had payment issues with Visa (ING, UBank) and also Mastercard (Westpac, CBA). Tried heaps of times but wouldn't work, was about to give up but then tried again and got it working with;

Surfshark VPN (free trial) and worked with my Westpac Mastercard (same as above which wasn't working earlier).

Thought I'd share incase it would help anyone… knowing my luck it'll be cancelled… :D

    • Have you tried all other cards after switching to Surfshark VPN? Or did you just try Westpac card and nothing else?

      • Just tried to add ING and UBank as a backup payment method but they didn't work.

        • Worked!! I have used Surfshark VPN (free trial), created new email and used a different device and My ING card was promptly accepted. The problem stemmed from the VPN server; when I used the free VPN from the Google Play Store, all cards were consistently rejected. Thank you mate

          • @OneFootUp: No worries! Interesting that ING worked for you… I might try it a few more times to see if I can get it working.

  • Another MVP move ISP!

  • Thank you. Worked like a charm

  • My commbank card is not working tried so many times. Any other alternative??

    • My Suncorp one worked

    • Neither Wise nor Ubank cards worked for me.

  • Anyone willing to share the free VPN trail for a day :)

    • Use surfshark. It is a free trial just create a temp email.

  • Worked perfectly, used Surfshark on IOS, was never asked for phone verification.

  • +1

I managed got it to work, it took a few attempts and an hour break but here's what i got:

NordVPN doesn't have Nigeria region, and South Africa on nord won't work either.

So I signed up for Surfshark and spent roughly 18-19aud for the Surfshark Starter (1 month for 16.99 + vat)

Then hopped onto netflix while on the Nigerian VPN from surfshark, although I'd advise signing up for netflix on mobile instead of desktop since the pages didn't load fully for me to proceed.

On mobile iPhone, get onto netflix homepage (i used chrome) and then get started with an email that hasn't been used on netflix before.

For payment, Commbank does not work for me, so i created a Revolut account and converted $10 aud enough to cover ₦4,400 for netflix premium.

Tricky part here is the payment can reject a few times and i'd suggest persisting or trying again another time later until the Revolut payment goes through and next on the Text Me SMS verification page.

Don't bother using a number, especially if you don't have a mob number in Nigeria. What to do next is go back a page or press back arrow to return to payment page and enter those card numbers again.

For me, the 2nd time I processed card payment (revolut still), the next page should be different, you should see a next button instead of text me to skip the page.

If you could do that, then id say you're done. If for some reason you don't know your password and need to reset, and especially if your email account didn't receive the reset link or and error from netflix prevented the process, I was able to request reset via 4 digit code and it arrived in email to complete the pw change.

  • I could not get it to work yesterday with the bank details but tonight i tried again and I got it working.

I just kept refreshing the bank page until the error stopped coming up and on the mobile section I grabbed a random number from google and it rejected it, I then hit back.

I Put in bank details again and it worked first try, clicked next and it did not ask for a mobile again.

  • If anyone is stuck using different cards, I just kept changing my name i.e. Qwerty ASD -> Q ASD or Qwerty A and it eventually went through. Good luck!

    • What….as in Card holders name and keep trying the same card?

      • Yes, have 7 cards and none worked. Once started varying the name, it worked.

        • I tried that many times to no avail over a couple of days using Wise & Ubank digital cards.
Solution for me = I signed up and grabbed a "Revolut digital card" which was instant and cost nothing. It worked immediately thankfully.

          • +1

@Borg: Revolut rejects my application everytime ever since I didn’t pass their ID photo verification. On my drivers licence, I have longer hair but back during covid (when I first applied for a Revolut account), I got shorter hair. Their so-called AI assist failed to match my uploaded photo to the photo of my drivers licence.

A few years have passed and they still won’t approve my new applications
I roasted Revolut on Twitter but they totally ignored me.

  • if your card doesn't work i recommend trying a few times again bc my card didnt work the first 2 times but it worked on the 3rd without changing anything.

  • With my current normal Netflix account, I'm finding some family members interstate can still share my login details despite Netflix's advertised crackdown. Are people finding others can share a Nigerian login?

  • I tried 28degs then NAB debit card.
Neither worked first time but then went back a couple of times with NAB and then it worked and debited my account $2.98 (the real ozbargainer plan "basic" lol).

Logged in ok, then went into manage account and it had "setup for recovery password" banner at the top so I clicked on that and logged me out.

Multiple times I tried to login, reset password, get a code and nothing worked. Wouldn't send me an email.

Just then got onto chat and they fixed it. Sent me a password reset email ok.

So now I tried going into manage account and again if I click on "setup for recovery password" banner at the top or select to add a mobile phone number (was going to add Aus number) it just logs me out.

This time I can login ok but any ideas why I can't add these things?

I signed up successfully, I used surfshark and I found a temporary Nigerian phone number online but I was able to sign-in without the need to verify the number.

everything is working pretty well but the picture quality doesn't seem to run as high as it did when I last used Netflix a couple of months ago.

For example, I currently have Extraction running in the background as I type this and the video quality is reading: 8:54 Mbps/2160/Codec DV5

Seems to be about half of what I used to get and HD content has been under 2 Mbps.

    Interesting… (" I'm wearing shorts and a T-shirt!")

thank you for the laugh :D

    • Would the account get BANNED "silently" once geolocation lockout rule is violated?

      • who knows, we can only assume what triggers they look for to raise suspicion on accounts

  • +2

Assuming Netflix would be wised up to what is going on here, it would make more sense if people tried to avoid travelling abroad to Australia with their Nigerian account so suddenly after signup though, since that clearly has to be raising some red flags

  • After quite a bit of trying I finally got it working.
It wasnt accepting payment so I changed from Surfshark to Nigeria VPN (on Android). Trying to pay with Revolut and others.
It then took payment but didnt give me access!
logged back in again with new incognito and Nigeria. It didnt work so I changed VPN back to Surfshark and it took payment again but this time it created the account.
Fingers crossed it all keeps working - im keeping my Turkiye account for another month or so.
