GUYS I MANAGED TO GET IT TO WORK IN MINUTES HAHAHAHAHAHSHDBQWEBJ (sorry I'm just so happy). Payment proof :)

ok ok before we get too excited, as always:

Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions (Nigerian Edition)

Netflix has once again rolled out a 2nd price hike for Türkiye within 4 months. I said enough is enough, and decided to explore other avenues. Decided to test the Nigerian Prince to see if he'd give in. I did encounter some errors, but somehow managed to bypass them within minutes. The result? I managed to sign up to the world's cheapest Netflix (or second cheapest, idk lol) in less than 10 minutes (without gift cards), and for the record, it was my first time trying as well. That's insane in my books. There is also no 30 day local region restriction as confirmed by myself and you guys.

This guide is the latest updated guide I've made so far (with screenshots)! Please see the statistics section below for an interesting read and show some love. Any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

  • Nigeria is the cheapest country in the world for Netflix. See plan prices below.
  • Turkey is no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they keep increasing prices every few months.
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremely easy and effortless, making it one of the easiest and therefore cheapest country to sign up with.
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up is almost impossible. Egypt is the next cheapest, but impossible to sign up for the same reason. If you have a bank card locally from these countries, feel free to sign up directly otherwise.
  • @Scrooge McDeal's post for Netflix Kenya is slightly cheaper than Netflix Turkey, however many members have had their memberships cancelled and payments refunded.

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully. Please review screenshots at each step if you are stuck.

  1. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Nigeria. I used Surfshark VPN (Shopback currently has 98% cashback)!

    https://my.surfshark.com

  2. Open Netflix on a new tab (not being logged in), enter your email (a new one, preferredly) and press "get started" (see screenshot):

    https://www.netflix.com/

  3. On the "Step 1 of 3" page, press "Next", then set a password. On the "Step 2 of 3" page, press "Next", then choose your desired membership plan, then press "Next". On the "Step 3 of 3" page, click "Credit or Debit Card" then enter your CC or Debit details (I used Suncorp Debit Card). Tick "I agree" then press "Start Membership". If you get a payment error, try a different Credit or Debit Card and try again.

  4. If the payment method is accepted, then the next page will be phone number verification (I'M SO SORRY I DIDN'T GET A SCREENSHOT OF THIS PAGE AS I COULDN'T GET THE PAGE AGAIN AFTER). I entered a random number in from the PingMe app and it redirected me to the next page to enter the verification code. PingMe didn't send me a code and it was dinner time so what I did was back click on the browser to the previous page (the payment page). I entered the payment debit card again and it works as expected, bringing me to a new phone verification page (or so I thought). This page (after reading it carefully) actually said "Welcome to Netflix! You've started your membership and emailed the details to [email protected], with a mobile option to set up password recovery (just ignore this). I pressed "Next" and voila - I'm now on Netflix Nigeria baby! At this stage you're done! Enjoy your membership :)

You can probably use PingMe (similar to Turkey deal) and it will still work I think. I couldn't try as I managed to bypass the phone verification step as explained above, but if anyone wants to give it a try let me know.

FAQ

Q: I just got a "Payment Declined - Update Payment Method" email from Netflix. What do I do?
A: This issue is being reported by many people who have recently signed up to Netflix Nigeria. They seem to only a few months after signing up, but once fixed, it usually does not happen again. There are two ways to get around this issue:

  1. You can contact Netflix Live Chat and enquire about the "Payment Declined" issue. Make sure you chat with your Nigerian VPN activated. If they ask, say you're in Nigeria for a holiday, or came up with another excuse. Tell them that your payment has declined and you'd like to add a new credit/debit card. They should (if not, request them to) be able to send a payment form popup directly on the chat so you can add your new payment details. If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one. Once the payment is accepted, the "Payment Declined" issue shouldn't occur ever again.

  2. Log into your Netflix account and update your payment method (Nigeria phone number required). When you follow the prompts to update your payment method, Netflix will require a Nigerian number. You can use the PingMe service to obtain a Nigerian phone number for the purposes of this SMS verification. It will cost you a few dollars to buy credits for the purpose of receiving this SMS. Download the PingMe app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store. Create an account, and recharge with "coins" (credits). 1 coin ($2.99 AUD @ App Store) is enough for 1 Netflix Nigeria SMS verification, but you can also buy 5 coins ($10 AUD @ App Store) for the price of 3 in case you need it in the future. After obtaining your coins, click on the "Verification" tab on the bottom of the app and follow this screenshot: select "Netflix" for the App/Website and "Nigeria (+234)" for the Country/Region. Proceed as per the PingMe app and use that to validate the Netflix SMS verification process.

Q: My current card expired. How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: See the FAQ directly above this question. If you're sticking with the same credit card account (i.e. just getting a new/replacement card against the same account), you may not have to do anything. Your Netflix account may automatically update to your new card details, due to a connection provided by Mastercard, Visa, AMEX, etc. See here and here and here for more details, thanks to @NitroJolt.

Q: How do I add Netflix Nigeria Gift Cards to my Netflix account?
A: There are no Netflix Nigeria Gift Cards available.

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After signing up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move that is only available from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that particular country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN service for this, and most VPN providers should work.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Nigeria going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here. Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

  • Worked with Surfshark VPN
Macquarie card. (second attempt, just click submit again, after error)
Only asked for phone as backup, so just skipped it.

Netflix has profile transfer built in, if anyone is interested.
So don't cancel your existing one just yet.

Plus reading some of the comments, I might keep both accounts for another month. (Not use the Nigera one)
Although I didn't do that with the Turkey one, but thats a long time ago, so happy to pay for both for one month, still cheaper then Aus sub.

    • I paused my Turkey sub for the next month (as my renewal was on the same day as I signed up to the Nigerian sub). I will pause for another month and if the Nigerian one is good to go then I’ll cancel my Turkey sub.

    • I think the profile transfer can only be used in a scenario whereby (if currently sharing) one can transfer it out into your own "new" account. It can't be transferred into another already created account (I'll stand corrected).

UPDATED: Netflix Notes to following so looks like it is possible to transfer from one to another. Nice.
We made it easy to transfer this profile
      - Transfer recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, settings and more
      - Own your account, or join an existing account, and keep everything you love about this profile
      - We’ll leave a backup copy of this profile on the original account
*Saved games will not be included in the backup copy.

    • Same here - Surfshark VPN and second attempt of Macquiarie Card worked for me

  • Does anyone have a link to that spreadsheet which used to do currency coversions to AUD for each country and their Netflix costs?

  • Thanks OP.

Worked with Hola VPN extension for Chrome on PC - has Nigeria option. Signed up for free account with email. (edit - Hola pretty useless once the 1st 30 minutes was up, asked me to install software on PC for it to continue to run instead of continuing as a Chrome extension)

Registered with Citibank Credit card (accepted on second attempt after first attempt saying a problem). Payment went through to account.

Added Aussie mobile number with no verification code sent. Hopefully will work as family has nagged for Netflix for some time. Probably will stay with VPN for first month to be safe before going without (though free Hola only allows 30 minutes at a time on PC). Will watch on android devices now using nigerian VPN.

    • I tested without VPN on and seems to work fine.

      • Thanks but might still wait for a month just so that I don't have any risk of being rejected in the future. Just receive email to verify the aussie phone number. Might do that with the VPN still.

    • How did you change the country code to Aussie for the mob number?

      • during the setup when it asks you for mobile - you dont enter anything just press next and complete rego - once you have done that account activated, go into settings / account and update AU number ( you are able to chnage the country code here) you will get a OTP to verify Au mobile - thats it

        • It says:
To start your membership, we’ll send you a text message with a one-time code to confirm your account. Message and data rates may apply.

If I leave it blank, it says "mobile phone number is required".

If I go back to payment, fill it in and go next, it goes back to this page.

      • Once I was in the Web based netflix Nigeria site on Chrome, the prefix number representing Nigeria can be clicked on to change over to Australia 61.

I now have an email with a link to verify the phone number. Not sure if I should wait 30 days to click on it. Will try it on an alternative phone with that nigerian VPN app that people are taking about.

  • Nigeria VPN connected. However when checking IP address, it keeps showing India. Same as when using TunnelBear on the laptop. Frustrating as….

    • I noticed this with Surfshark too but I was still able to do the deal.

  • anyone had cyberghost work

when connected i get netflix.com/es-en yet on speedtest that IP says nigeria

    • +1

No dice with cyberghost, tried as my first attempt but seems to default to netflix spain. Best using the nigerian free vpn android app if you can or surfshark trial as others mentioned

      • thanks the free vpn worked

Here's another tip - if using a debit card, make sure you have some funds in there. I got an error with a NAB debit card saying insufficient funds, so I added some and it went through.

    • +2

Isn’t this what debit cards are about? Make sure sufficient funds are there in order to make purchases?

      • Well I never use my debit cards except for instances like this where credit cards don't work. And I have a few unused transaction accounts and so for picky deals like this you naturally end up trying most if not all of them and some will error out if there are insufficient funds - I didn't realise they try to take payment straightaway.

      • +1

Applies to any banking with a card. Don't get very far without money lol.

        • Absolutely. You don’t go get a tank of petrol and expect you could leave with scanning a card that has insufficient funds. Or any direct debit utility bills on a card that has not enough funds/credits.

    • Not sure why you were negged as it is a good point i.e. to check that you do have funds on the card in "advance" to using. I have several Debit cards that need topping up for Subs and sometimes forget so have a reminder set to top up occasionally. Have a + vote to counter the neg :-)

      • just another peacock got it's feathers all ruffled I guess :D

      • -1

Hah cheers some people just need to recognise that others may choose to live differently to themselves

  • I tried logging into my account (the same Kenya account that got cancelled recently) with Nigerian VPN and netflix is erroring out. I used the same login without VPN (back in Aus) and the credentials worked. Can anyone suggest why? Thanks in advance!

  • Worked with Revolut and free android VPN mentioned previously. Let’s see how long it lasts

  • +5

    Thanks OP.

I don't really watch Netflix, but I just wanted to experience the buzz of getting the deal!

    • +2

this is the way. why else would anyone be on ozbargain if not for this?

    • Haha same here but after a year away since my CC was scammed and had trouble changing it in Turkey.

…it doesn’t seem like much new content.

  • not worth the hassle given the experience with Kenya

  • Wondering so far anybody got deactivated with Nigeria?

Kenya seems a lot of people said deactivated after a few days.

    • We going to find out in the next few days/weeks.

    • start of the week it initially worked for me but today I'm getting a spinning wheel of death trying to load content

probably the vpn as I can still access the account but I'm not willing to try content without VPN just yet

      • Yep I’m getting this and assume it’s a slow VPN connection.

Waiting until the next debit ticks over and visit Aus.

    • Deactivated with a refund ?

      • Looks like deactivated with no refund. Others resorted to bank chargebacks.

        • +1

Bloody cheeky. I don't know if I can be bothered chasing a charge back for $4 but there is a matter of principle at hand.

        • How would u prove it to the bank to initiate a charge back?

          • @Sammyboy: I think one said their reason was service not received.

However you prove that? Not sure.

            • @xoom: May try with the 2 billings for Kenya. My Nigerian already got deactivated and I hadn't even logged in once after signing up! Used a VPN to try log in too last night. All using Macquarie. Used revolut for one for try with Nigeria and new email.

  • It makes me wonder why Turkey is so special, the workaround has existed for years and yet still standing strong for most people

    • Turkey was still cheap. Just not as cheap as before. Compared to the highway robbery they charge here in oz. Its still cheaper than that.

  • perhaps some people never get blocked and still have their accounts active, for playing it safe, ie, don't login to account without VPN during first 30 days, don't add an Australian mobile number, don't share your account for 30 days, don't transfer profiles from Turkey to new Kenya/Nigeria account (don't raise any red flags)

Perhaps some people do still have active Kenya accounts, who knows :)

  • Just receive an email.

We hope you're enjoying everything Netflix has to offer. We're updating the price of the Premium plan, bringing your new monthly price to TL 229.99 on

    $11.46 still alright for 4k

    • Exactly. Its still cheaper than prices here.

      • Yes I won't mess with it until something happens, given how hard getting a new payment card set up on the chat was

    • +2

I like how "updating" has become the universal euphemism for "increasing" when it comes to prices.

      • Updating price is somewhat positive sounding.

        Increasing price is negative sounding.

        • Yes, Australia Post use the same strategy but they use the term "changes" .

          • @ash2000: Change gives a sense of something to look forward to. Price increase is just something everyone dread.

    Dear Ozbargain,

I assure you this is not a scam. I am indeed from Nigeria and I am excited to offer you a Netflix membership for a small fee of $15. I have recently been in contact with Netflix Australia and discovered that Ozbargain members have been given the opportunity to subscribe to Netflix for only $2.94 AUD per month.

In order to set up your accounts, I will need a deposit of $15 to forward to Netflix Australia. This will facilitate the processing of your premium account. The savings you will make from this offer will far exceed the initial deposit, and soon enough, you’ll be reaping the financial benefits.

To take advantage of this offer, please feel free to send me a private message so we can get started.

    Thank you and best regards,

    Adjuluwinyeko Oyadime

Scam. No spelling mistakes. Definite scam.

      • +1

Oh let me fix that for you kind gentleman edit: nvm can't edit replied comments :(

    • Lol send me the money and I'll send it to NF Nigeria 🤣.

Good you are stimulating the Nigerian economy.

      Excellent meme

Has anyone figured a way to do something similar with Google Play Store? Nigeria/Turkey etc. don't work with Play Store anymore. Any other country recommended?

  • +1

Had success using Surfshark VPN app on laptop with Firefox browser & Revolut card.

First time trying to submit it didn’t accept the card but I just re-entered the card details & clicked submit again and it worked.

  • +1

Tried converting a Turkey account to Netflix. Didn't work.

Tried making a new account on SurfShark VPN. Couldn't get past the landing page (entering the email for "Get started").

Then used the Android VPN that was shared here. Got past the landing page. First ~5 cards failed. Finally one went through and it didn't even ask me for a verification number.

  • +1

used an existing AU account and previously stored UP card plus the tuxler free VPN, it all went without a glitch
    thanks op

  • Auto renewal worked for 16 January, but i have been signed out today and prompting to renew menerbership.

  • Solid VPN + UP - literally the same process as signing up for the AU account - after providing debit card details, it asked for mobile - I just pressed next and signup was completed. Went into account settings and updated AU number and OTP was sent which I verified - I’m going to keep this alongside my Turkey as I’ve have had that for number of years - wanna make sure this doesn’t get cancelled so going to use it for next 30 days off n on on the Nigerian VPN - cheers ISP

  • Hi, has anyone else notice some shows not available. Is there anything on my end I can set/change to ?

    • Like what shows? Country specific shows?

      • Like regular shows/movie that say can stream on netflix but I can't find it. eg. The proposal
My kid likes 'Gabby's Dollhouse' and have watch it on netflix before but I can't find it either.. any ideas??

        • This with or without vpn to nigeria that you cannot watch these shows?

        • Gabby's Dollhouse & The Proposal are there (VPN off).

    • don't forget to disconnect your vpn.

    • Yes getting this too. Black boxes where there should be a movie etc shown. Says something about not available.

Also, has a blank row Popular in Australia yet I’m on the Nigerian VPN and only done that with this subscription. ie: not run it without the VPN.

Was thinking all this is slow VPN and possibly remnants in the app (on Nvidia Shield TV) of previous subscription. No idea.

      • The whole idea is not to run via VPN. That's just for signing up. It works fine off.

        • Just added app to iPad and used VPN. New install on the iPad and is fine.

It’s the Sheild TV causing the issue.

BTW others here think it’s good to wait for the second time your account is debited before going VPN free. I’m using it for a bit and see if others are kicked off in the next few weeks.

          • @Amazingly: Most people signup from Kenya deal got booted after 2nd debit.

  • +1

Managed to sign up with my turkey acc that I canceled few days ago

cancelled turkey netflix but stayed signed in on comp so when i enter Netflix Nigeria it says welcome back restart netflix
    used hola vpn
had previous CC details saved using Macquarie,
asked for ccv entered that then wanted Nigeria phone number to text, pressed back page entered ccv again & enter, signed up without asking again for nigeria phone number

see how long until I get booted & stuffed up my turkey account lol

    • Nice it worked for you, seems easier than most solutions.
hopefully all good, not wiling to mess with my Turk account yet :P

      • Yeah wouldn’t recommend, come back in a month see if I’m still Nigerian 😂

Geeez scammer spam emails timed their Netflix spam email well, just got an email saying “your acc will be suspended update your payment details” , first thought Fck already 😂

        • +1

I would happily want nothing to do with the country to be honest, I can imagine the scammers getting word of this and sending out fake emails.

  • I cannot login with Nigeria vpn (surfshark) but can login without vpn in Aus.. what would cause that ?

    • That happens with Netflix Turkey as well. Nothing unusual. Login without VPN.

  • +1

    Legend! Thanks mate

Question from a newbie… does getting Netflix via a VPN mean that you have to have the VPN active on that country whenever you want to watch Netflix? or do you only need to use the VPN to sign up in the first instance?

    • Sigh…

I wish people spend few minutes to read the descriptions or FAQ first.

  • +1

Surfshark VPN [98% shopback] + NBA Debit Card accepted on the second attempt + Brave web browser and skipped mobile number entry :)

  • I get "Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again later." When trying to enter my email address at step one, when going to "Get Started" on the netflix website

    • It happened to me as well. Reconnect your VPN and it should work.

    • I had this and can't say the exact solution BUT what I did was:
      - Use a Browser not used before for signup with VPN connected.
      - Tethered my PC to my Mobile Data to work outside my current NBN providor (just in case).
It worked immediately and took me into my account and to the select plan page. Not sure which part above helped as I did all of above at the same time.

    • Use a different VPN.

    • I used surfshark vpn. The issue was to do with certificates. When had a signed certificate on my phone it worked

  • Hi there,

I tried the walkthrough for Nigeria but had no luck with the CC.

I do have a Turkish credit card and had signed up to Turkish NF previously on a family plan and it wouldn't let me watch it on my tv without having a Turkish VPN on.

How are people who have Turkish NF getting around the region restriction without having to use a VPN and getting the password sharing to work without having to do the "back to home base every 30 days" garbage?

    Thanks in advance

    • Not sure what you mean? I have both Turkey (13 months) and Nigeria (3days) and never have to turn VPN on beyond initial sign-up. TV just sign in using your username and P/W via Netflix app. Don't use VPN on PC/Phone when authenticating TV.

      • Ok thanks, maybe I'll give it another shot.

What about the "back to home base" every 30 days thing if you are password sharing on a family plan?

        • Not an issue via either right now. No doubt Netflix will introduce this down the line like they have for most countries unfortunately.

          • @Borg: I signed up to Turkey and used it with VPN on my phone for 5 days just to be safe and make sure it was working without triggering a cancellation from NF and now thought it was long enough to try signing in on my TV's at home (without VPN running) and it signs in but then when I try to play something it comes up with

"ERROR: Your account can't be used in this location. For more info, go to help.netflix.com Code: 3-0"

Any idea how to get around this without a VPN?

            • @Ricky2274: I already replied to you, but you deleted it and commented the same thing?

There is no way to bypass the location lock

        • Wait ~30 days

          • @CodeXD: Oh sorry, I didn't see the reply and the reason I deleted and reposted was because I thought I had replied to myself and no one had seen the message.
            Sorry about that.
Thanks for the info, I'll wait the 30 days and see what happens.
            Cheers. Appreciate the help

  • I signed up, and the registration process went smoothly with Surfshark VPN. However, I am unable to log in unless I use Surfshark VPN. I've tried using other VPNs, but none of them allow me to log in; I always receive a wrong password message. Only when I switch back to Surfshark VPN does it work properly and allow me to log in. Has anyone else experienced this issue, and is there a workaround for it?

  • Signed up via VPN with NAB card Friday. Booted and they locked my account by Monday.
May have to try different bank later RIP

    • was this a Nigeria account you signed up? Also, did you access the account without a VPN after signup with Nigeria VPN?
