        AUD. Bought two.

The serial numbers of mine look to be in the same range as the depicted screenshot, with almost identical power-on hours and power cycle count.

Metrocom… did you buy these from East Digital and resell at a markup?

        • +5

Good job, did you happen to share the deal on OzB?

        • +2

Could be i was in shenzhen lil while ago, and were a bunch of businesses n data centres closing down all over China, the Chinese economy is in very bad shape atm, over half my electronics suppliers have gone under in last 6 month's.

        • +2

Hi mate, we might share the same supplier with East Digital but no we didn't buy from them. No point buying from them and resell considering as business we need to pay GST on import, and minus the shipping cost locally we will be sitting on negative margin. $216 is a great price for sure, but it seems they have raised their price on eBay.

          • @MetroCom: Wasn't on ebay.com.au was their shopify store im betting,

Could be same chinese supplier I use but I don't buy in your bulk quantities to get the discounts.

    • Got a link?

    • -1

      No they weren't,
Not even close to $216 delivered

  • +1

@MetroCom - What are the terms of the warranty? If I get the drive and it has errors on it, can I send it back for exchange or refund?

  • +2

Hi yes a replacement will be sent straight away or a refund if you prefer.

    • +2

Why not just offer a 12 month warranty, with the amount of hours on these drives the defect rate would be so low it couldn't possibly cause any economic loss. Ive seen many sellers of refurbished drives offer $10 upgrade to 12 month warranty?

  • +1

Thanks for the deal @MetroCom got 4 of them.
these Linux ISO's and COD updates are getting out of hand

  • Would this be good for CCTV NVR for constant recording? looking to up the 4TB

    • check the NVR you're running many have a 6tb limit for drive size.
also depending on # of cameras and resolution you may find that thats about a year worth of recording.
For instance 3 cameras 4k 25fps will be about 5-6tb at FULL resolution h.265

let us know the model of your NVR and we can look it up

  • How annoying. I just bought an 18tb from neology for $345

    • New or 2nd? Its a good price for new.

  • +1

To rephrase one of the questions above - If a surface scan of the drive shows any bad sectors, is this a replace/refund?

    • Yes.

  • @MetroCom Status "On Hold" when paying via bank transfer.
Does it mean the item is reserved and waiting for the wire to go through?

    • +1

Yes, once we got payment cleared we will change the order status to processing and dispatch it the same day.

  • Does anyone know if these 16TB drives would work with a SATA docking station? I have this one https://www.simplecom.com.au/simplecom-sd326-usb-3-0-to-sata… but I couldn't find any info regarding max size supported. Thanks

    • I had a look at 3.5" enclosures from Simplecom. It seems a lot of their low-end products only support up to 8TB hard drives while their higher-end products support 16TB.

Unknown which category this Simplecom docking station falls under. Somewhat suspicious that they don't specify. How about spending a bit more for this docking station on Amazon? It clearly states support up to 18TB:

      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07SH65FXT/

      • Might need to do that, I wanted to check if I'd have to spend extra. Thanks for checking

  • Hmmm….. Grab these or wait again for ED? :/

    • Grab these.
ED goes out of stock quick if it’s a good deal and then jacks price

    • $239 for these WD Used 16TB Drives with 17k hours on them and 3 month warranty vs ED Seagate Exos X18 16TB Factory Recertified Drives with 0 hours and 3 year warranty for $268 or 18TB for $289.

      • +4

I ended up buying one of each of the above. I like to mix and match my storage.

        $507 for 32tb. Cannot complain.

    • +3

I am thinking wait for ED… assuming they get the 18TB drives back? I waited too long on the last one and missed out.

It's the warranty on these ones that is making me hold back. Yes these drives are unlikely to fail… but 3yr warranty is nice if they do.

      • "3YR EastDigital Warranty"

        Just saying.

I'll gamble on bathtub curve of failure. If it dies early hopefully they'll RMA it. If it lasts longer than a year then I'll treat it as if it could die at any moment, backup accordingly and not hold my breath on a replacement if it does.

I bought one of this family a few years back. (UltraStar HC330,10TB)
I have to say, this guy is very noisy, much noisier than I thought, and it trembled a bit when it was working. I can feel it if I lean my leg against the case.
And even when it was not that busy it was still noisy, sometimes I was wondering what it was doing. I bought another one a few months back with larger capacity and a different brand, it was much quieter. If quietness is something you care, better do more research.

Other than that, it's OK. And I was told that later models with more TB were sealed with Nitrogen rather than mine, air, which may help reduce the noise.

Ofcourse it's just my person exp

    • I believe the 10 and 12GB models were different to the higher and even the lower capacity 8GB

    • Way older and different models, they are sealed with helium not nitrogen

    • Helium, not Nitrogen. You're probably used to lower end 5400RPM consumer drives, these are mostly 7200s so a bit more audible than their lower spinning counterparts.

  • +2

I just want to chime in a bit with these Helium disks. Although there are reports that the helium may leak but I have no seen any. I work with these helium drives since HGST 6TB all the way up to the current 18TB. I have probably installed 280 of them over the years. The oldest HGST 6TB helium's are still spinning 24x7. They are super reliable we use them for cold and hot storages. We put the hot files in latest disk and the older disks hold less accessed files. I have a few failed within the first three months(r/w head stuck) but I guess it's a manufacture defect. Our server room runs at 18C during winter and 25C in summer months. We try to control the ambient and outside temp within 10C to keep running cost down.

Also these drives will do in out hotswap all day long unlike some Samsung 860/870 SSD it's got very poor electronics that cannot handle surge.

I work for a media production company we add to our storage every year. I have to say these 5yr warranty drives are very solid compared to desktop drives with 3 years warranty. I have some earlier Seagate enterprise drives die within three years of service, their warranty return some recertified drives. Those only lasted two years. But this was only a few samples I can't say the same thing for all.

  • $239? That's a steal. Thanks for the deal. Ordered.

  • Any deal on 6?

  • I bought one and it was poorly wrapped. Three layers of bubble wrap in a big box bouncing around.

    • Oh, now I'm not sure about purchasing one

      • Mine was wrapped in 2 layers of bubble wrap in a small box. Not much moving around possible.
But, the package was not marked fragile and the carrier was handling it quite roughly.
        Currently doing a surface scan.

  • Bought 2 x 16TB WD drives 14-FEB-2024
One of the drives could not even be detected by Windows or the NAS box (sent a return request)
Other one is fine and works well.

  • Are these supposed to make a small clicking sound every 30secs or so?

    • Not that I notice with mine. Currently they are under error scanning, no clicking sounds.

    • It's probably head parking.

Can you check what power plan you are using in windows?

And specifically, the setting under Advanced Power Settings, Harddrive, Turn off hard drive after.

Set it to Never, and see if it's still doing it.

      • was 15 mins, but its clicking more often then that. I did some reading,
i think its the Preventative Wear Leveling" (PWL)

        • -1

Hmm. Well, I get a hd rumble every few seconds on each drive due to PWL, which could be interpreted as a click I guess.

But it sounds like you have something different (if it's only every 30 secs)? Can you check and see if it's actually every 4-5 seconds?

          • +1

@metalslaw: every 10-15 secs. yes more like a rumble now that you mentioned it.
I checked for bad sectors, took around 18hrs? No bad sectors.

  • I'm doing a 'Reinitialise disk surface' scan with HD Sentinel on this 16TB HDD, in a USB enclosure.
Currently estimated at 209 hours at 22.04 MB/s
    Does that sound about right??

    • I put it in SATA to scan, it was scanning at 268MB/s, took 22 hours.

      • ok, I'll do that too.
        Thanks

  • +1

I received mine yesterday packed ok in a small box with bubble wrap. HDD itself in antistatic bag.
I've installed the WD digital dashboard app here
    https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/downloads/softwaredow…
Although I'm sure there is a better app for data centre products, it still identified and gave me drive stats, and ran a SMART report.
my drive has 20 power cycles and 747 days of uptime. So it sounds like it was used in a SAN alright.
its written 63,693,908,530 GB of data. I think a surface scan is probably a good idea too!

  • Hot damn these are getting cheap! paid over $400 each last time I bought some in 2022

  • Hi, the 18tb drive is not 299$ delivered. Its now 324$.

  • Get the 16TB from Metrcom or from EastDigital with 3 year warranty ($244)? both are used. pay slightly more for 3 year warranty?

    https://east-digital.myshopify.com/products/wd-wuh721816ale6…

The "new" ones are $398 from ED

  • I just tried to buy from metrocom online and could not complete the purchase. Not sure if it something I am doing wrong. I select credit card and then submit and it just freezes. I also tried to create an account without success. Has anyone succeeded in completing an order?

  • @MetroCom Where is Paypal option?

    • Hi unfortunately due to high fees and long holding time we have to remove it.
