Good for office work only I guess but not for gaming with only 75Hz and 4ms.

    • +5

Gaming is fine with that refresh rate, I use a 60 Hz monitor for gaming and no issues.

      • Depends what games and console, PS5 games would be better with higher refresh rate and less lag.

        • +11

60 Hz monitors and TVs have always been fine for gaming - what do you think we all used before high refresh rate monitors came out?

          • +5

@Mondorock: Assuming you launch your sweet games via Win 3.1 with your VGA monitor. 256 colours?! Nobody will ever need more!

Technology improves. Going back to 60hz once you’ve tasted higher is jarring.

            • +2

@AaronR: Lucky for me then I've never tasted higher (though my old CRT monitor was 85 Hz, higher than my LCD's 60).

              • +1

@Mondorock: To be honest it’s probably a good idea to avoid it then haha. When I first tried 4K I didn’t rate it. Going to 120hz+ was like slowing time down and giving me superman vision. Its glorious.

              • +1

@Mondorock: Don't be too worried. I have been using a 165hz Asus rog monitor for years. It's good. But honestly it adds less than 5% to the gaming experience, if that, and only on twitchy shooters, which for me is Gears If War and COD games.

Just by chance I've had to move my PC in the house for my wife to use it for work for a week so I've hooked up my pc to my work computer (Dell, 60hz).

I don't want to say I've been duped, completely, but the graphics horsepower required to drive 165fps, compared with just driving 60fps etc is such a crazy difference for the very low, actual gaming gains.

I'm playing Mw3 and GOW5 on 60hz and I'm like damn, the games run at locked 60 and it's pretty much perfect.

When I think what I has to pay for a 165hz monitor it makes me sick.

            • @AaronR: Only if you’re soft.

          • +2

@Mondorock: Try using a phone with 60Hz display after using 90Hz or 120Hz, you will feel the difference in smoothness and colors lag specially when playing high resolution and motion games/videos.

          • +1

@Mondorock: I overclocked my CRT till it blew up :p

    • +3

not for gaming with only 75Hz and 4ms

There are plenty of games, e.g. RTS, story-driven games, simulators (e.g. cities skylines, MS flight simulator) that will benefit far more from the colour accurate IPS panel than from higher refresh rate.

Many more graphically intensive games will struggle to even hit higher than 75 fps with the fastest GPUs.

      • RTS is dead :(

        • AOE2 is pumping at the moment, multiple comps throughout the year - Hidden Cup V is on right now, NAC just finished a few weeks ago. Streams are copping good view counts etc. RTS is not dead.

          • -1

@doobey1231: lol just because a few people are playing a 25 year old game doesn't mean the genre is alive. What I meant was that it's dead as far as new development goes.

            • @Mondorock: At its core its a 25 year old game, but its had multiple updates, a massive team supporting it as well as consistent DLC drops. Plenty of development still happening

If you think the age of an RTS game has any bearing you are looking at the genre wrong. How old is Chess? Checkers? Every single game is different from the last in an RTS, that's why replay-ability is infinite.

    • +1

Yep agreed. It’s 2024 so worth just getting 120hz and up

    • +1

Don’t know why you got negative, 60Hz was fine, 480P was fine, 19 inch was fine 20 years ago. But technology improves, why settle for 20 years ago technology when you can have more than 480p/19inch/60Hz today?
75 Hz is playable and acceptable, but definitely not ideal gaming monitor. Settle for 60hz and 75hz monitor is fine if already got them, but buying new gaming monitor? Get 120hz +

      • +2

The monitor is not targeted at gamers at all.

It's a good quality display for work and business functions.

I have 5x 4k monitors in my house and none of them are over 60hz

        And I couldn't care less.

        • I had Dell 4k 60Hz monitor, they’re great except gaming. I switched to 1440p 165hz monitor 6 months ago for gaming, super satisfied. As you and he said, this isn’t a gaming monitor. I don’t know why he got negative when he said that.

      • +1

That was my point. But people had different perspective 😅

  • Confused - is this powered by USB-C or just provides USB connectivity?

    • +1

Images show you still need a mains power, think of it like a docking station + monitor together

      • +1

Connects via USB C to your laptop, still requires main power.

    • +6

USB-C from monitor to your laptop provides video but can also be setup (from menu) to charge 65W at same time eliminating the need to plug in a separate video cable and charging cable.

      • I can confirm this is the case. I use basically the 4k version of this and I love the fact it has a fast type c charger built in. You can use it even if your device is not outputting via that cable.

      • I presume this depends on your laptop too….!!!

  • -2

Thought it was $299 deal long ago.

  • +2

This is cheap for 4k but not if it's QHD.

  • +2

Better 4K LG USB-C monitor on here just recently for similar price.

    • Was that a VA pannel? If it's VA, I would go IPS even if it's lower res. But if its IPS vs IPS its a more challenging choice.

      • No it was their quite high end 850 series, IPS with excellent colour accuracy, and ok-ish HDR400 (better than the equivalent high-ish 4K Dell as I own both).

Quality, recommended. I paid $800 for this series a few years ago. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830216

        • Thanks, ill check it out

    • Yep, the Lenovo 32 inch IPS has been only a bit more and it's great

      • I went with the Lenovo when my Dell copped a Duplo brick through the screen. It looks great, but the built in USB-C hub is straight trash. The Dell is so much better if you care about that.

    • I’d argue 1440p is the better resolution for 27 inches

      • +1

Nah. More the merrier, scaling is better now

        • In my experience it's not great, especially wit graphics programs

  • +2

The 4k version of this monitor was at the same price every month for a while 2 years ago

    • +1

got 4k version of this for $329 from Dell outlet about a year ago

    • +1

I've bought 2 of them used for 200 and 250 respectively in flawless condition, still under warranty and 4k

Dunno how they're charging so much for the 1440p one.

  • +2

Decent price but don't buy unless the USB C is a must. Their regular version of this monitor is regularly around $270 and below the $300 threshold.

    • what's the model number for the non usb c version? Is it the S2721DS?

      exact same specs?

      • Not sure if it's an identical panel or not but the basic specs are the same. For work use anyway there will be no difference.

Btw the stand on these is pretty shit, mine wobbles around a lot more than my other MSI monitor.

        • interesting.

I have the S2722DC and have been thinking about a second monitor. I just want it to look the same (quality and physical appearance, i.e. bezel).

Not too phased about the connectivity as will just use HDMI I guess (hopefully it's future proof for a few years to come).

I ditched the stand long ago for one of those arms.

          • @89tnp: It is possible you'll see minor differences in colour or brightness. But you should be able to tune those out. That could even still happen with the identical model as sometimes manufacturers mix panels.

Depending on how strongly you need the aesthetics to match, you can get 1440/27 panels as cheap as $120 on sale without an adjustable stand (not necessary if VESA mounting).

Dell outlet currently has 4 monitors, with a price range of $87 to $3,899:
    https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/shop/monitors

  • Can you set this up as 2x27 inch monitors using the internal hub?

    • Daisy chaining isn't possible, you'd have to connect both monitors to your computer

      • Thanks!

        • +1

The S2722DE can daisy chain. You can buy those for about $500. Two S2722DE or one S2722DE and one S2722DC S2721DS (edited, DC apparently has no display port in) would both work. Noting the latter would have mismatching refresh rate unless you set the S2722DE to 75hz.

Make sure you check your laptop USB C output for compatibility especially if you want data passthrough. Needs to support DisplayPort 1.4/HBR3 over USB-C.

Getting it working correctly might be a bit finicky and hardware dependant especially if you want 2x 120hz. I'd buy from somewhere with a good returns policy like Amazon.

  • +1

Well this is surprisingly expensive again! Maybe I'll get decent money for my old one after all.

Wait this is only the 1440p one? Lol

    What?

    • 1440p is just about as expensive as 4k in this size. I assume it's because 4k in 27 is fairly undesirable.

      • I'm using a 4k 27" right now and my eyes with glasses are still not amazing good.

I use scaling and stuff if I need to but the amount of space is useful but also 1440p is just a tiny tiny bit too low res.
I won't go over say 15" at 1080p anymore and I have a 16" 2560P right in front of me too.

        • It depends a lot on the use case. Some software scales well and it's really beneficial (photo/video editing), other software (especially older stuff) absolutely does not and it becomes nearly unusable at those pixel densities.

I think for most general office workers not doing multimedia work 1440 is 'better' in 27inch just because it creates less problems at a mostly cosmetic cost.

The 4K version is discounted at Dell but it's $456.50

  • Anyone else got one with dead pixels…

I have like 4 dead subpixels just under their threshold to replace. Lucky I got it through Amazon.
