Are you planing on keeping a phone for 7 years?

      • +34

I'm on year 5 of my Galaxy S10e and can't see me replacing it for at least another year or two.

        • +11

Just wanted to add, I just got a S24 Ultra to replace my Note 8, so yeah 7 years is totally reasonable.

          • +4

@binary101: & keep the Note 8 as it still has SpO2 sensor (I use it as 2nd phone) to check stress status during the Cost-of-living Crisis ;)
My Note 4 is still used by my father (I send him spare simple replaceable batteries:)

        • +1

Mi max 3 from 2018 has entered the chat.

      • +15

People don't replace phones as quick as they used to. Ridiculous inflated prices and technology catching up, probably plays a part in people holding onto their phone for a lot longer. Maybe not 7 years but for most they are not upgrading every year or two anymore. It's usually around the 4 year mark for me.

        • +7

I agree. Change your underwear, change your phone.

          4 years is about right.

          • +5

@drfuzzy: 4 years for a change of underwear? That's insane!

I change mine weekly, gets too smelly otherwise!

            :p

            • @CMH: You throw out dirty underwear instead of washing it? Lmao

          • @drfuzzy: That's sensible, lets make every leap year February 29th change your underwear day, only 9 days to go!!

        • Also should improve resale value even if you don't keep it the full 7 years.

      • +4

If I can get a battery replacement and updates why not, my work Iphone is 5 years old and does it's job, my personal android (oppo) I replace when updates finish, I don't upgrade for performance, just for software support and battery life.

      • I bought iphone 5 in 2012 and replaced it with galaxy S10e in 2020 that I have currently.

      • +1

My partner has Galaxy S9, and it's still going strong after 6 years. So 7 years of support is definitely a good thing.

      • I still use a galaxy s8 that's around 6 years old at this point

    • +3

Google do have an authorised repair centre here where you keep warranty/waterproofing when getting a screen or battery replaced, it's just you have to post it to them.

I'm typing this on a pixel 2 xl, with Apples updates to make their phones slower I doubt there's many iPhone 8s out there still alive https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/technology-514…

Imagine thinking a company that purposefully slows their phones so you have to buy a new one is a good choice when considering life span of a phone 🤔

      https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3gXQJFpk2j/?igsh=NnQ1YWtqZW5…

Also their general build quality has been low tier and always has been compared to Samsung and even now Google, hell the Motorola G84 screen probably gives the iPhone 15 a run for their money.

      • +1

You would be surprised that there are still companies using iPhone8 in their fleet…

        • I'm quite surprised, i wouldn't be surprised if their productivity was slowed by it. Fact is they slowed that model down and were sued for it.

          • @lookingforadeal7: Last week a guy at work told me he is rocking the iPhone 8, talked about replacing his battery and asked how hard it is.

        • +2

we have 800 iphones at work and as long as they get IOS updates we keep and repair.

      • +1

How does your pixel run? My android phones seem to kneecap themselves after about two years sadly. Compared to an iPhone 7 I had been given from my work which worked pretty good if I am honest.

I have a pixel 4 with expanded battery, another pixel 4 which shuts off randomly once the battery gets low, both of which overheat sometimes, a samsung S21fe which is laggy, and a Xiaomi which bootlooped itself 2 years in - this I managed to recover after disassembling the entire phone.

Say what you will, but I feel Apple devices do last a while. I am quite the android fanboy but starting to get annoyed with the way things are going.

        • +2

Maybe Google quality has gone downhill which is why I still have the 2 XL. Bought the 7 pro and it cracked from just falling off a pillow onto the ground, my 2 XL is like the old Nokia's I've accidentally swung it out my hand at pretty high speed into a concrete wall and nothing lol. Was going to cost $400 to fix the screen so just sold it at less of a loss. Sadly this applies to all new phones I'm thinking of giving Motorola a go. I reset my phone recently and runs like the day I bought it. Believe it or not I think the key is to not update your phone! Whether the new updates slowly make your phone slower due to new features or on purpose in Apples case I think after 2 years you really don't want more updates. Battery could be better if I use my phone all day it'll run out within 8 hours but i can just throw it back on charge no biggie. I wasn't really happy with the difference between my 2 XL and 7 pro. Unfortunately in my personal situation all my family buys Apple and with their constant complaining I dont know why they just dont get a cheap android for the same experience. Certainly not an Android fan boy at all and wish there was an alternative at this stage considering both Samsung and Google are overpriced but nothing compared to Apple. But I don't think we can really sit here and say iPhones aren't about 3 years behind other Androids. At least they have 3D scanning capabilities so I'll give them a plus for that, it's pretty ridiculous Samsung and Google don't.

          • +3

@lookingforadeal7: Google switched from excellent HTC to LG (still great) for the Pixel 2 XL.
Now they all cut for more profits (Apple-style corporatocracy)

            • +1

@taki: Yeah it's a shame, is there any alternatives for a good quality built phone that won't crack or break really easily these days? Honestly if I could buy a brand new Pixel 2 XL once this one breaks I'd happily do it. I've decided to keep this one until its no longer usable we'll see how long it lasts in the end. Battery health will probably be the killer it's certainly not 100% but I can get away with it, having Bluetooth on does drain the battery much faster than anything else which is the main issue I have with it.

              • +1

@lookingforadeal7: Agree, you have to sacrifice one thing for another. My favourite Pixel was the 3XL, even with that ridiculously large notch

          • +1

@lookingforadeal7: Yeah I hear you, I have a few older phones which surprisingly still work okay, whereas the more modern fancier ones seem to depreciate faster.

Regarding your thought about not updating though, would that not leave you open to any potential security vulnerability?

            • @Boioioioi: Yeah unfortunately seems to be the case I'm not a big fan of new phones, was really disappointed in how my pixel 7 pro cracked the camera was amazing and is the main reason I got it, now I just use my GFs iPhone 13 to take photos, can't fault their camera quality.

It likely does but personally I wouldn't have too much to lose and have faith my money is protected. Haven't had any issues with accounts so far and as for people accessing camera or mic there'd be not much to see or hear would be pretty boring for them.

          • +1

@lookingforadeal7: Exactly my experience in a family full of iphone owners. Always complaining, their phones have rubbish battery life and yet every time a new one gets released (which is almost identical the previous one) they sell like hot cakes. A triumph of good marketing over substance. Also assisted by the mainstream media playing to the Apple crowd as it makes up a good chunk of their readership/viewers.

            • +1

@Brianqpr: Yeah my GFs iPhone 13 pro is just really infuriating to use as well. My main issue is the keyboard being to small but I'm guessing I can make it bigger? Just always seems to register where I'm not pressing. It has to be that they've not tried another phone before but I can see once you're on one OS it's hard to switch especially if you've paid for apps. The battery life on her phone seems to be alright though but my 7 pro definitely beat it although it was released later. Now I live in a different state to most my immediate family I wonder how they're going with their tech mishaps, must have learnt how to fix them themselves or just live with it as I don't get any phone calls about it.

        • Motorola G5 (ancient I know) was fine, just very limited updates and security updates, I think security was quarterly and it only got one OS update, but it worked fine.

My V30+ still works fine, but had limited updates again, and locked things down so you can't really put custom roms on it without messing up selinux and encryption.

My Pixel 2 XL lasted 9 months before a charge port issue developed, it was grey market and I got screwed on warranty, so cut my losses and sold for parts.

iPhone 11 was rock solid for a year, went back to android because of Pixel 7 deals.

Pixel 7 I put up with for about 4 months before I could no-longer handle how poor the mobile reception is, kept missing important calls, so I sold it.

On a refurb iPhone 12 atm and it's working fine, but I could probably use a new battery in the next 6 months if I decide to use it long-term.

I'm extremely reluctant to try anything with an Exynos modem after my Pixel 7 issues, so that rules out Samsung and Google.

In future I wouldn't mind trying a nothing phone, oneplus, or iPhone SE4 if the rumors are correct.

P.S. If you have a functional Pixel 2 XL, I'd keep using it until you NEED to upgrade, it was one of my favourite phones I've owned while it worked.

      • -1

issue is some apps don't work on 2XL like prezzee :(

        • +2

I haven't run into any issues yet and I have prezzee does it just not open or is it slow? I will admit Hungry Jacks app is awfully optimized and the shake and win is a pain in the ass to get working lol, only used it when I lived next door to a HJs though so not an issue for me now but I despise that app.

      • +1

I’m typing this in my iPhone 7, no problem with any apps unless they require iOS16 or 17. I still play master duel and runeterra

        • I suppose it could be user error on my families behalf, they don't ever close apps or browser tabs no matter how many times I show them to do it. I could see if you looked after it well it would still be good to use. My iPod nano that I found that was sitting in storage for well over a decade still worked and had all my songs on it when I plugged it in, would need to have the charger plugged in for it to turn on but I was pretty impressed considering it would have been in a garage reaching 40°c+ during the summer

          • +1

@lookingforadeal7: Hmm you reminded me I need to review and close 482 tabs I currently have open in safari

      • -1

The iPhone 8’s has a lot more users now than the pixel 2 xl sold.

iPhones displays are usually the best until the next generation Samsung flagship release. Usually they trade blows each generation.

    • That's to be expected from a tech giant software specialist to make it stand out.

    • -1

I don't think I've ever kept a phone longer than 3 years, maybe 3.5 years, who keeps a phone for 7 years? Not even my 80 YO father.

  • Is it me or does it keep asking you to get a plan with these on repayments? Do you need an existing plan to take advantage of this deal?

    • +1

You usually need a plan to buy something from the telstra store. But a $2 starter sim at Coles, that worked for me last time

      • Thanks for the tip

    • you need to have an existing service or account with Telstra to get it outright. You defs need a plan when doing the installments.

    • i have been buying mobiles outright from Telstra website using my boost mobile account. But I can't see any option to buy outright now. May be they have changed the criteria.

  • +5

Hope the 7 for $499 also becomes available at some point 🤞

    • That would be a good price and my limit nowadays on phones. But I have no desire to replace my phone anytime soon

  • +1

Now waiting to see others price drop to match Telstra

    • some won't as you 'need to be a member'
if you're worried about stock you can try price match.

Other than that I'm guessing people wanting to use gift cards.

    • Yeah last time I tried with JB to price match Telstra, they said no as you need a Telstra ID to get that price online. I didn't bother argue about being able to get it instore but you could give it a go

  • +3

    JB perk event tonight.

    • Yeah, they sent an email ahead to remind it was happening. Seems a little desperate, but understandable given its recent revenue performance after the slowdown due to people tightening spending.

      • they did something similar for boxing day, then it failed probably due to the server being overloaded or they messed it up. Maybe they are just testing the waters again.

  • +1

Tried to price match Apple Watch with JB, told can’t because you need an active service/telstra ID hence doesn’t fit JB deals T&Cs. YMMV

    • That's a lie. I've had an inactive account for 10 years but still have an id. No requirements to get the pixel with an active id

  • -4

Wow still overpriced even with discounts

  • +3

This should have been the retail price at launch.

What a joke to think they could release something with an inferior CPU, inferior screen, inferior fingerprint sensor, trash battery life and charge high end flagship price for it.

Hopefully their sales this year were bad so they go back to being a good value flagship killer, not a trash flagship

    • +2

      superior software.

      • +1

        Tested it and 100% disagree.
One UI and iOs are so much more reliable.

    • +1

Specs are meaningless to most consumers.

Even in blind camera tests specs still can lose. Like in the Mkbhd camera test the inferior 7a ended up getting better results to a lot of people voting.

Yeah software is important, still can get over after ten years the best keyboard is still the one that came with windows phone 8.1. Wish Google and Apple could get their keyboard more fluid and accurate. Specs usually are just for tech nerds.

I do laugh at this YouTuber that repairs tech showing how an ancient iPhone 5 can still be faster than the latest and greatest.

      https://youtu.be/PuoqjKDjNT4?si=WHx3GrEWGK23fPVN

Yes trash hardware can beat great hardware with better software support.

      • +1

        Have you tried SwiftKey ?

      • It's funny, I have a (now very old) Galaxy s8 (nearly 7 years since release).

It doesn't run great, but given it hasn't gotten an android update in years, it actually holds up better than you might think and i've gone 2-3 years now thinking I can probably get another 12 months out of it before replacing.

The issue is security patches which ended a few years ago.

  • +5

I was on Samsung phones for quite a few generations. Switched to a Pixel 7 Pro last year for a super trade-in deal. At the price point the camera is great but geez it's way more buggy than Samsung. I thought that a stock version of Android would be more robust than Samsung's overlay, but I was wrong. Heat management, battery life and wireless charging also way better on Samsungs than Pixel.

    • +1

Android base is AOSP. Everyone gets this and develops their own "version of Android".

Vanilla Android is in fact a skin just like One UI is on Samsung phones.

      • And a lot of Google apps are just bloatware too.

    • -1

my last samsung was the s10+

the android update bricked my phone lol

    • EXACTLY my thoughts when I got my P6 pro.
Now I bought myself an s24!

    • Samsung have been designing and making their own SOC for years so they optimised for what counts for customers.

  • -1

can someone recommend a cheap Android phone for retro games and moonlight streaming? something with 6.7 screen + 90-120hz + ok CPU?

    • Best specs with a cheap price. Yeah mate sure.

      • pixel 5?

    • s9+ from fb marketplace + lineage OS a14

  • +3

Tensor chip is not the best compared to sd

    • -3

Baddd, and Google is reportedly dropping SD support in Android 15 😭

      • +1

eh? That's not gonna happen, their biggest partner Samsung uses SD in US.

      • +3

No they're not. The older pixel devices that run SD processors just won't have an Android 15 update provided by Google. There's nothing about SD/Tensor that's responsible for that, it's just that they'll all have reached end of support by the time that Android 15 is released.
        https://www.androidpolice.com/android-15-leaves-last-snapdra…

      • No that's something apple would do

    • We all know.

  • Is officeworks going to price match or beat?

  • +2

I have concerns about Google Pixel quality. My phone overheat after less than 2 minutes recording when outdoor temperature was 28 degrees. It automatically stopped recording to wait for the phone to cool down.
Probably I will choose Samsung next time.

    • Samsung drops video frames even without overheating. Samsungs aren't great for video.

      • Not really, Pixels are universally known for recording terrible video

  • Is this locked to Telstra

  • Is the Pixel 8 Pro worth it for this price?

It seemed to be highly rated. I've been waiting on it to go on special and came here to double-check it's still a good buy. I'm a bit surprised to see most people talking about the phone in a negative way.

What caused the change of sentiment? Have other phones overtaken it for this price point? Or now that it's been out for six months or so, have there been problems that are identified only with the benefit of time?

Thanks in advance for any intel!

    • people are negative about it because the hardware doesn't justify the price vs Snapdragon Gen 2 and other software bugs. However as the saying goes the people that have problems will always be the vocal ones. Plenty of people are happy with it.

I believe this is a good price and is one of the better deals since black friday 2023 as its usually only ever $200 off.

    • Yes if you are after the 50MP. Photos on pixel 8 are restricted to 12MP.

  • Pixel 7a at a cheaper price? Or this

  • +2

why is it still 128g, come on google 256 standard as other big players

  • After a recent Samsung update on S21 ultra, I am getting big lags on mainly FB. Tried restarting and put cpu to high in battery management. Hope Samsung is not doing what apple was blamed to do few years ago… making old phones slow.

    • +2

You can do factory reset also, shoukd speed it back up again

      • I was trying to avoid that taken so many authenticators, apps are installed. Slowness is only visible on FB app. like really laggy. Shuttering in videos or scrolling. For now, using FB lite. Will try doing a factory reset.

    • +1

My expectations would be overtime with major updates it’ll be normal to see performance degradation. It’s the nature of software updates, over time they typically get more bloated and require more resources. Also older devices are less optimised for newer major versions. What Apple was guilty of is they were reducing clock speeds on their processors to improve stability but this came at the expense of performance obviously. I doubt Samsung are doing that, it would be quite obvious and they’d get called out for it. But who knows.

  • Non wobble phones with useful software?
