mini-LED is a different type of panel compared to cheaper regular backlit LED panels

      from cnet:

The main issue with "normal" LED LCDs is their contrast ratio isn't as good as OLED. As such, the picture isn't quite as good. Mini-LEDs, like all local-dimming LED LCDs, can improve the contrast ratio by dimming certain areas of the screen so dark areas can appear darker. The problem with that is even the best local dimming zone still comprised a fairly large area of the screen. So a small bright object on a dark background — a streetlight, say — would raise the level of the surrounding black area, making it appear gray. While engineers have done a lot over the years to minimize this problem, it persists. It has to, it's just physics.

With Mini-LED, a greater number of smaller LEDs are spread across the back of the TV. In most cases these greatly reduce the size of the local dimming zone, so to a casual viewer the contrast ratio is fantastic. Not pixel-perfect like OLED, but close enough. Mini-LED TVs can also produce some extremely bright images, which can be handy for daytime viewing in brighter rooms. There's also basically no chance of image retention, so for gamers worried about marring their OLED screens, Mini-LED is a great alternative.

It’s quite obviously offers the best picture quality for the money. Like most bargains on ozbargain bang for buck.

I've got the TCL c835 55" last year's model and purchased the Samsung OLED C90 a couple of weeks ago and the OLED is slightly better for me but definitely not worth $1k+ better.
No NBA app on the Samsung which is ridiculous, remote dead on arrival…while the TCL just hums along.

    • how's the built-in google chromecast on TCL? good for playing netflix, Disney+, paramount+, Plex?

      • I used Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+ and Stan on my TCL C735. Works perfectly. I have not tried Plex.

        • Stream 4k through Plex on the TCL, not 1 stutter, i do have a 100mbps connection, great tv. Only small issue on the TCL is that the basketball trails a little, it's a little noticeable but the Samsung does it very well.

@adamm12: Not in movie mode or some similar motion adjustment (that normally leaves a blur trail)?

          • -3

@adamm12: Yeah, because they have terrible motion handling.

      • I've got the 845 (poster above says 835, I think had Roku)
Had the 85" 845 for a few months, no issues as yet. Lovely brightness, super fast turn on. Only once in 4 months the TV froze (power button worked, off and back on; no worries) the Google TV is great.

(poster above says 835, I think had Roku)

AFAIK only the US version (with different model number) had Roku OS, everywhere else has Google TV (I own a 65" C835 and absolutely love it).

      How loud is the hum?

    • My own comparison between OLED and the 835 has the OLED coming out as a clear winner. Dark scenes and ability to do pure black and the colours on the OLED were far more consistent for me. On the TCL I only ever felt it had nice colour when watching Dolby vision content. Still the TCL is a great TV for the price point and I enjoy using its Google driven controls.

if you're referring to the S90C, I find that very hard to believe. A QD-OLED Samsung is not slightly better than a MiniLED TCL, it's a lot better.

      • I think content is important here. They may be watching only specific content that may not take advantage of the s90c. Maybe using dynamic modes, not calibrated, etc. The delta between products changes depending on what they're used for and how they're configured in addition to the tech used.

I personally was blown away by my s90c. Absolutely love it. I do notice some small motion judder issues at lower hz but I can live without. No DV is a bummer, but coming from a 2017 Samsung mu6300 or rather it doesn't matter much lol.

  • This seems like a very good deal. 900 Local dimming zones. Pretty good for a HDR with 2000nits peak.

As long as you can put up with the awful blooming.

      • Unless you're willing to shell out 2-3x the amount of cash any LED TV in this price range will have blooming.

  • Is this a noticeable upgrade to a X85j that doesn't have FALD.

  • Waiting for the 65 p745 to go under $600 again (was after Cashback).

I have been waiting for a deal on 85C845 for a while but so far no luck. I remember last year they went to around 2600ish

    • Hodl strong. Waiting for the 75 to drop back below 2k.

  • how is this compare to Hisense 55" U7KAU ULED Mini-LED 4K Smart which is also same price but 55"?

  • Is this P745 the cheapest 120hz 4k tv
