    Looks like this same battery.

Yes, I know, I just bought it from eBay Outbax …

Dick Smith website lists the 3rd Party Seller as "Toughland".

Clicking though the Dick Smith info on that seller gives ABN 80 160 922 814, which translates to Smartchannel Pty Ltd and also Outbax Camping.

        Good work seb

      • Good stuff.

So Fair Trading/ACL/ACCC wise it's Outbax, even if they'd prefer it not to be.

  • What's the actual capacity of the battery? It says 100Ah on the box. Doesn't mean you're getting it.

  • +1

    Is this correct?
    Continuous Discharge Current: 100A
    * Max.Discharge Current (5sec): 200A
Most if not all cheap lifepo4 batteries have continuous 50a discharge.

    • +2

Apparently charges at 100A too. Some are as low as 20, 50A is common.

  • This is getting into 12v car battery pricing, I wonder if I can throw this in my EV?

    • If it fits, why not.

Just remeber to use the suitable lithium dc-dc and solar controller chargers with these LiPo4 batteries.

      • So are you saying the car's dc to dc charger wouldn't be appropriate? Or you mean if it's flat dont use a regular car battery charger?

        • Correct. You need a specific240 V to 12 v battery charger that is designed to properly charge lithium (different voltage profile to a regular charger).

Also best to have a standalone dc-dc charger again which is designed and capable of charging a lithium battery. These will also isolate and stop starter battery from going flat as well as they usually have a combined MPPT solar charge controller built in. On that note, if charging a lithium battery via solar, the solar charge controller also needs to be lithium capable as this gives the right voltage charge profile and will also protect from excessive overcharging.

I did not mean to install this lithium battery in a petrol or diesel car as a starter battery,

or EV for that matter as they do not need starter battery and their set up is completely different.

I meant installing this in a car as a second/leasure battery for fridge or lights etc.

    Website says:
IMPORTANT: While our LiFePO4 batteries are top-notch & can be wired with other batteries of its kind, it is not advisable to connect any LiFePO4 batteries in parallel or series. This poses several risks and should only be done in emergency situations. If you must wire batteries together, make sure you are familiar with the correct procedure or seek help from a professional if needed.

    I call Kabullsheet
"not advisable to connect any LiFePO4 batteries in parallel or series" this is absolute bollocks. It has more to do with the BMS quality and characteristics.

Quality (=much more expensive) batteries are all designed to be connected in parallel, and often in series.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting to connect THESE batteries in parallel or series, because I don't rate them as quality.

You certainly get what you pay for with LiFePO4 batteries…

Was reading a forum discussion on pouch cells the other day. Fellow who appeared to have genuine knowledge and cred said that many cheap pouch cells are very probably recycled. He also said that doesn't make them useless for 12V applications but it will mean it's more likely that some cells will die early, that the battery will lose capacity quicker, and of course it will have reduced cycling. Some replies confirmed individual cell problems in almost new batteries. All of which makes sense.

Plenty of users will have a good run so as someone said on the other deal, at this price if you don't have "mission critical" needs (eg you're a 'weekend camper') then they're probably worth a punt.

This old tear down of a very similar cheapo battery from Outbaxl:

          https://postimg.cc/gallery/vMSrj46

It appears to be 4s2p, 2 x 60Ah pouch cells in parallel, either very low grade cells that weren't actually 60Ah, or recycled cells that were down to around 80% capacity, which would equate to around 100Ah which that battery claimed to be…

The problem with recycled cells is that all lithiums tend to drop off fast once they get down to 80%, so these are likely to have a much shorter lifespan than a battery with new cells…

@FLICKIT: Very confusing, he said that it was a completely amazon different battery he tore down.

            • @nessism: My bad, I though that was the link to the Outbax pics, it's a VERY similar Amazon one (the outbax link in that Deal has been reused for a totally different battery, it was a yellow label cheapie when the deal was running)… … There are some photos around of the Outbax yellow label one with very similar 'iffy' pouch cells in it but I cant find them now…

The moral of the story was that it's likely all these real cheap batteries have very similar questionable cells in them, you get what you pay for…

  • +1

I wonder what is going on with the brand name obviously being removed from the images? Did they get a dodgy batch that they want to offload 'brand removed'?
Or, as others have suggested, are they just protecting the price point of their main Gentrax brand?
Guess we will see in time

They seem to be going to a lot of effort pushing them out multiple channels.
I guess they are massively overstocked and we will get ample opportunities to get these for cheap in the future

Don't worry this comes with Kogan warranty!! So it's all 👍

    • +6

A large no-name lithium battery with dubious specifications, sold by Kogan trading under a defunct store name. Yep, absolutely nothing to worry about.

  • Feasible to replace the BMS with a high-q one and go parallel/serial as much as you like…?

    • +2

      Lipstick on a pig imo.

    • +2

      No.
      They're obvs dodge/2nd rate cells.
Doesn't mean they wont work, does mean that pulling more than 100a wont be safe,

  • Pretty sure these are pouch cells inside.

Also for the price, you can be quite confident these are refurbished cells or not real capacity.

Kings 60AH lithium was on sale recently for $210 with high quality prismatic cells… makes more sense to buy that imo.

Hmmm, good for kayak motor or am i way off?

    • Why not if it suits your budget.

  • What are peoples rhoughts on this battery so far for people who purchased?
