What's the desktop equivalent performance of the 4090 mobile?

    • +7

      Between 4070ti and 4080 iirc

      • +2

That's incredible. Laptops have really progressed.

    • +4
    • +4

I had the i7 4090 model of this laptop and recently sold it and got a desktop. The laptop is very noisy when you push the gpu to the max.

      • +6

To be expected that its noisy.

        • +1

I was expecting some noise but not a jet engine. I would not recommend the HP omen to anyone.

          • +3

@zol: I wonder which laptop didn't make jet noise when you push GPU to the max

            • @mfu: Ok not max but as soon as you exceed around 60% fans kick off to max speed

            • +1

@mfu: I don't have a laptop with 4080/4090, but the Lenovo Legion 5i with 4070 doesn't make much noise at all. I use a MacBook Pro (M1 Max) and Legion fans are slightly audible compared to M1 Max pushed to max.

              • @Niceye: I had Gigabyte Aorus 17 with 3070 reduced wattage, and the thing was rather quiet.

but that was an exception. every other gaming laptop I had was like a jet engine

              • @Niceye: Second legion. Quite respectable cooling.

              • @Niceye: Thanks, I'll consider lenovo legion next time they have discount.

            • @mfu: My razer is pretty quiet.

              • @Ruddaga: I didn't really like razer, buy one for WFH support during covid lockdown, the main GPU died under 2 months. Return it and get a new one just to get the main GPU overheat after 3 month.
Shitty build for a $7000 laptop. Refunded and buy dell for half the price
I didn't really remember how the fan sound though.

                • @mfu: And yet here I am on my third one and I have yet to have any issues with either the razer 15, 17 and now 16.

Ain't subjective personal experiences just the best. :)

Also who pays 7k for a razer laptop… learn to shop around lol.

                  • @Ruddaga: Haha, yeah I haven't join ozb back then. Even the dell I used to have to replace razer was overprice

  • +12

Hmm only a 720p webcam on a $3600 laptop? How much extra would it cost to put in a 1080p - a couple of dollars??

  • Good price will probably be gone fast like last 4090 omen deal

    • +4

      People have too much money

      • $3600 is definitely a bit of money but if you keep it for 3-4 years it should be doable for most people but there's a lot of factors where most couldn't justify the cost, main one being most people dont need this

        • Try 10 years on my $800 laptop. It's struggling 😂

          • @Joxer: Had my $1600 laptop for 5 years And had been sold hopefully it gets some more life, I had my first PC for 10 years and was still rocking a gtx 970 in 2020 so I know the struggles

            • +2

              @lookingforadeal7: 1070 in 2024 gang.

Tbh I'm happy playing older games on it lol.

Games at Witcher 3 level run fine at 1440p

              • @Circly: Nice, Witcher is a great game and a good time sink, my 970 was definitely starting to struggle in most games I still have it and it probably still works but it's in storage at my parents and probably hasnt been turned on in 3 years

            • @lookingforadeal7: Yeah I have an old clevo p170em, the gtx680 and 3840qm is continuously overheating. 32gb ram is still keeping it relevant.

  • does it overheat?how's the cooling?

    • +1

not as good as legion/rog, fans will be loud but it performs fine :)

    • +7

I have the 13700k version from a pervious deal. Vram gets hot to the point you wonder if its even got cooling. Gpu itself is usually fine, but cpu hits thermal limit even with -0.120mv undervolt.

Fans are loud af. Just raising it off the deck slightly will give you better temps. So much bloatware on it. Also you're locked out of properly undervolting. Just have to use omen software.

Got my use out of it, took it overseas for 3 months. Will probably sell it to a mate cheap when 8800x3d comes out. Build a new itx system.

    • -2

      the "deal" price above

  • +3

1 year ago 13700hx + 4090 $3000 with cb. Why technologies these day still maintain the price so long
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/763178

    • +5
    • I’d also add because the demand for their chips is high for other industries now + there are few companies able to complete/none at the 4090 levels

    • Considering this was a year ago too plus they gave 5% further discount for the shipping delay was like 2.88k.

i7 one for sub 3k was the better deal imo, but this one is nice to see more storage and proper 13th gen i9.

      Edited*

  • +1

Have they fixed the wobbly screen on this version?

      • +1

        Seriously? For real?

      • How about the power adapter that's like lugging around a desktop?

        • Most gaming laptops now. High end ones have big ones.

  • bargain!!!

  • +3

    This or 6,260 mcnuggets?

    • +5

That's only like 17 mcnuggets a day for a year, so definitely this

    • +1

      this won't taste like soap

  • Can this omen model allows you to set a max charge limit to the battery, like 50%? To help prevent significant battery degradation since it will be plugged in 90% of the time?

    • +2

No, you can't actually. Seems a bit annoying. There's an adaptive charging function which apparently does do the same thing, but it always seems to be at 100% for me.

That said, you can't really use it functionally on battery power, so I'm not all the concerned with lowering the battery life span. Personally I consider it as a portable desktop with a UPS built in which in the event of a power outage gives you just enough time to finishing up what you're doing before you go and read a book.

    Youtube review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnFbjAC2cWk&ab_channel=techk…
According to this review, the screen's max brightness is just above 300 nits and the screen wobble is quite noticeable too

  • how many nits?

    • wheres the deal?

    • +1

Was hesitating should I purchase this laptop but…. Thanks, bought one after reading it.

  • Omen build quality as good as Legion?

    • +1

Not really. This is an old chassis. That said, it's a very good price for the raw components and the chassis is "good enough".

  • +1

I'm struggling to pull the trigger on the RTX 4090 unit, I currently have a two year old Legion 7i with a RTX 3070, trying to justify the upgrade, the specs on paper looks quite top notch on paper for the Omen but the build quality on the HP Omen is weaker especially the screen wobble is a bit concerning.

    • +5

$3.6K is a lot of coin

      • apparently these are deals for so many here. too rich i tells ya

        • -1

The most I would spend on a laptop is $2K.
          They depreciate very fast.
Wait 5 years and you can get a RTX 4090 laptop for half price.

          • @congo: What's the point of that, in 5 years it'll be about where a mid-range is at best with 5 years of accumulated risk like high vram/vrm temps from dried out thermal pads

Usually 1-2 years is half price but since there's no new gaming laptop hardware in 2024 (14th gen is NOT new), and most non premium options (like HP Omen, Acer, Aorus) have had to significantly discount to get sales, values are holding this past year.

    • +2

You will regret mostly because of the noise/heat and build quality. Unless $3.6k is loose change for you.

      • +1

        Thanks for your input.

  • New systems probably in the next quarter with npu chips https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/02/your-current-pc-probably-…

    • From your link… "Right now, even if your PC has an NPU in it, Windows can't use it for much, aside from webcam background blurring and a handful of other video effects. But that's slowly going to change"

So slowly the current gen will be outdated by the time a real use is found… Just like the RTX 2000 series for ray tracing. Ignore hype! Chatgpt does not run on a tiny bit of fixed function logic on a CPU, it runs on huge server farms. Buying a laptop today "for AI" is so premature it's silly.

  • -1

This, or Alienware at 2k extra, with better CPU and 64 gb RAM? But 2k is a bit of money…

    • +4

14900hx and 13900hx are literally the same chip. Its just a refresh.
64 GB ram for 2k doesn't make any sense - just buy the ram online and install it yourself
      https://www.ple.com.au/Products/652479/corsair-64gb-kit-2x32…
      280$

The only real advantage Alienware m18 over this thing is the build quality and display, but that doesn't justify 2 grand. Thats a LOT of money.

    • +1

and depends on the Alienware the new 18 have 2 full size NVME and 2 1/2 SSD Nvme slots on the intel version where the Amd its 2 and 1 Drives

  • +2

4090 only in name, equivalent of a desktop 4070, they fit it into a small enclosure so it heats up like an oven. if you are a true gpu sucker, buy the real thing

    • +1

It’s basically a power limited RTX 4080, probably performs better than the desktop 4070 is most cases.

    • +2

Though I guess, in mobile form factor this is as good as we can get… Don't really have a choice…sigh

And while eGPU works, for GPU like 4090 ot still isn't really a viable solution

  • +5

I've got the version with the older CPU. Quite like it, but I mostly use it as a portable desktop.

    • Great components for the price, there's really not much else anywhere close (or at least there wasn't when I purchased it last year)
    • It has an unused M.2 slot, which is to be expected but not actually mentioned anywhere
    • Cooling is surprisingly acceptable
    • It's an older chassis, so it has quite a bit of wobble, only a single thunderbolt which is annoying
    • Don't expect to meaningfully use it on a battery (with a 4090 you probably shouldn't have, but..)
    • Very annoying keyboard. Feels good, but no numpad on a 17 inch is questionable and it's also a weird layout - eg delete and backspace keys are right next to the power button, they fitted in a navigation cluster but then moved it all around for no real reason. That said, as I mentioned it's more of a portable desktop so I don't really use the keyboard.
    • +1

eg delete and backspace keys are right next to the power button

I deeply do not understand why laptop makers do this. It feels intensely against the principles of good UI / UX

      • +1

Yes, it was infuriating. Given the fact you mostly stretch to reach those keys, it's very easy to accidentally put it into sleep mode while typing. It's also annoying it would normally be the bottom left of the nav cluster (easiest to reach) but instead they put the rarely used pause button.

And of course the reason they can't fit a numpad is because they wanted to put some rarely used programmable keys on the left, which you're not going to hit anyway during gaming as they're too far.

Anyway, just use a real mech keyboard, much better.

  • +2

This is a desktop 4080 gpu but power limited to 175w or less with lower clock

    See the comparison: https://www.techspot.com/review/2625-nvidia-rtx-4090-laptop-…

They really should just call it 4080, 4090 has a lot more shader units.

    Greedy nvidia

  • +1

worth upgrading from a Legion Pro 5 16ARX8 ? keyboard sometimes stops working randommly. for few seconds

    update:
pulled trigger, much better than a 4070 laptop, 4070 gpu's seem so bad for some reason in reviews.
i also saved another $75 off laptop using 5% ebay gift cards, but can only use 4 $500 ones. or 3 with coupon i think? idk.

    • Where did you get 5% off eBay gift cards?

      • +1

woolworths staff member, but there are other deals around, i think. idk.

  • +1

I have the 4090 version of this laptop.
Absolutely brilliant laptop for the money.

Yes the sound is loud (only on max settings btw) but so is for every high perf gaming laptop, so this is not big concern.
    The keyboard is awesome.

Runs Starfield on max settings with 70-95 fps easy.

There might be better laptops with the same spec 4090 laptops (btw I have tried a few, not too different) but at the price point this is offered, its the best in the market at the moment.

  • Dumb question. For these specs, isn’t 16GB GPU RAM a little small?

    • It is pretty good because of the 4090 architecture

      • But regardless of architecture or not, it is still bounded by 16GB…

        • In terms of gaming 16GB VRAM is plenty.
It's roughly equivalent to a desktop RTX 4070 Ti which has 12GB

    • +1

There's nothing available with more than 16gb VRAM at the moment in laptops

If you mean system RAM, yes 16gb is low and will show up as sluggish performance eventually, or right away if you are a mega-multi-tasking chronic browser tab hoarder like I am.
Buying 32gb or more and installing it yourself is not too expensive (note if you buy the i7 version, ram is capped to DDR5-4800 speeds).

      • +1

Ok many thanks for the above. Silly me, just realised there are currently no laptops using nvidia with more than 16gb vram.

Correct me if I am wrong, with desktops, there are nvidia gpu cards with more than 16gb vram right?

  • -1

Better off getting a lite spec gaming laptop for 1k and put the rest into a proper gaming pc.

  • +2

no one mentions the speakers, but they are so good. blows legion out for sure, legion has bad speakers.
also great ports, i end up using the sd card reader a lot lol.

    • I can confirm, my Lenovo Legion 7i from 2021 have weak and pathetic speakers, they are too quiet even at max volume, the included Nahimic audio software does improve the sound quality, but only slightly.

  • +1

welp buying this was a mistake, just got it and there is a white dot in middle of screen . what can i do? i paid over 3500 for this and its faulty what a joke. Sitting here trying to set it up and hope its not a dead pixel and im wrong. have to wait for all updates and anything before i can even get in and test…
i swear i have thw worse dang luck.
everyone check your screens. do you have same issue?

    • If you have an ebay plus , you can return this for free then buy another one.

      • im waiting for hp they said i can return and get a replacement but im going though them, so hopefully its not a scam and they dont just take it back and wont send one. i have to send old one back first but also were waiting for higher ups to allow it first. if not ill go through ebay.

    • No such issue for me. But frankly, this is a bit underwhelming. After wasting time trouble shooting with support, I asked them to check if this laptop supported windows hello login, and it does not!
      No touch screen either.

My previous laptop was 4k display, with touch screen.

      • Touchscreens on gaming laptops are quite rare so i'm not surprised but no windows hello support is bit of a bummer especially when the ebay listing states
"IR thermal sensor" which i would of thought it had something to do with the camera

  • A word of caution- this laptop does not support Windows Hello face login as the integrated webcam is so poor!

  • Thoughts after first few hours with the laptop-
    Pros:
Big display for my poor eyes
    Surprisingly silent
    Great clarity for screen
    Great Speakers

    Cons:
    No Windows Hello
    Wierd configuration of keys
    No touchscreen
    No 4K display
    Poor Battery Life
    Overall 7.5/10

    Previous personal laptop 8.5 /10
    Work Laptop 7.5/10

  • hey guys, new ozbargainer here, was looking to jump on this but looks like its 4,499 now? just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing something

    • +2

You need to use the code HPTECH20 at check out as highlighted in the post.

      • ah gotcha, what a numpty move by me haha, thank you
