    Nice…

  • Can you install Plex on this?

    • Server or client?

    • +1

      Client yes

      • -1

Do you need a Plex pass for it or will the free version work too?

        • Dont need, ive only needed or for my phone plex app.

        • I am not using Plex pass and Dona direct play. You will need transcoding if your client doesn't understand all codecs or needs to transcoder to a lower resolution which isn't the case with mine.

        • Works fine without it. Paid version is nice for hardware transcoding, but personally I found it unnecessary and just easier to direct play.

  • If one were to block all amazon addresses would Netflix etc still work on this or not?

  • These things are pretty decent.

  • +2

Preemptive, before regressing into ad-tier and introduction of ad-free tier, as in USA.

    • … and there has to a USB-C replacement before end of year.

  • +1

I have a new Sharp TV but the Kayo Stream is shaky due to its specs..

    Would this stream Kayo better?

    • Yes, BUT these are not supported for the new 4k Kayo streaming. I switched from my FireTV 4K Max to the native LG Kayo app to test out the new 4K F1 feed and it looked amazing. Hopefully the FireTV can be updated/ will be supported in future…

      • Sorry but kayo F1 in 4k?

        • Yes, they started testing it the last few days! Good thread on whirlpool about it.

          • @wheelieb1n: So 4kmax gen1 not work with kayo 4k F1.?

            • @ssd01: Correct - My FireTV 4K Max gen2 did not allow me to change the stream to 4K in the Kayo app settings screen (showed the 4K setting but was greyed out).

It is also not on Kayo's 4K supported devices list.

Hopefully once the F1/AFL season starts they add it but given how long it took for a legit Kayo app to get released for the FireTV I'm not holding my breath!

    • Kayo through the kodi addon works a lot better if that's an option.

  • This or shield pro, if price not an issue?
What are the limitations of this vs the shield pro?
I heard some DV profiles do not work on this?
Does it do TrueHD atmos (not just DD+ atmos) ?

  • +8

This plus Stremio plus torrentio plus RD equals win

    • Problem is there are signs that Amazon might be starting to remove some apps from their app store, if it continues the way it looks apps like streamio might get pulled.

      • +3

If there's a will there's a way (I downloaded the stremio APK for android tv).

      • +2

Can’t you sideload apps on the Firestick?

        • +1

          You can easily

    • What is RD?

  • Nice

  • was considering getting one, however the us site has most firesticks as unavailable:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CDR3P78V?ref_=mars_gen_B08MQZXN1… (max)
    https://www.amazon.com/fire-tv-stick-with-3rd-gen-alexa-voic… (non max)

    https://www.amazon.com/b?ie=&node=2102313011&ref=MARS_NAV_de… (lite)

Does this mean new models are coming out?

    • This is the 2nd gen of Max, which only came out at the end of Sept last year, so make of that what you will.
Honestly I don't know what would be improved, great performance, Wifi 6E good remote etc

      • I have this and the cube, the cube is much much better. Has AI upscaling too.

  • @Muzeeb

  • +1

I'd go with the fire cube for $110 when on sale if using for just the home (portability). The echo function to tell it by voice to turn on and off and load my series/music is really nice. The ethernet and optical audio is a nice bonus.

  • +1

I was going to get one of these and then read the Apple TV offers better picture quality. Anyone able to comment? (I'd prefer to avoid apple but quality is my primary concern)

    • Apple TV is by far the best streaming option.

The Fire is great value, but if you want the best and don’t mind paying more and not being able to sideload apps for free the Apple TV is much better.

      • +1

Would love to see some independent comparisons done. Wish rtings did one :(

      • +2

Yea the ability to load custom APK files on the fire series is a big win for me ngl.

      • ATV doesn't have Stremio though

  • +4

I've got the standard 4k version. I made all 11 family members who want to share my plex library buy one.

These things are great, 1080p/4k directplays even h265/AV1.

I'm running plex on that $59 pentium mini PC deal on here recently and its a beast. I would HIGHLY recommend these sticks.

Sure they aren't as clean as googleTVs or offer seamless chromecasting, but boy they're fast and things just work.

    Just my 2 cents!

    • +1

Agreed. Have a couple and all work great.

  • May want to make note of (Gen 2) in the title @BargainShopping

  • -2

Is this thing just like chrome cast but made by Amazon instead of google?

    • +1

Well they’re both streaming devices…this doesn’t support Chromecast but.

  • +1
    • Thanks for this, So not much has changed over gen1. Might just wait for gen3 with hopefully Wi-Fi 7.

      • Are you having issues with the current wifi standard, wifi 6 can stream 4K/8K content?

If you 'need' wifi 7 to stream your content perhaps you should investigate cabling instead for best performance?

  • +1

Would this be better than the NVIDIA shield for Plex play?

    • +1

      No

      • +1

Not sure why you got negged. Some people have absolutely no idea.

    • +1

No, not by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Got an older tv, think it’s fullHD. Would this still be worth buying or go for the firestick lite? If this one works fine on a non 4k tv, preference is to get this one for futureproofing. Main use would be for Kodi/streamio

    • +1

It works fine on lower resolutions. The Lite will run slower as it has much worse specs.

    • +1

I'd get the 4K version as having more power is never a bad thing. You'll eventually upgrade your old TV one day anyway.

    • Works great, thanks

  • Which is better? Chromecast or firestick

    • Fire stick

    • I have both, both are great.

  • Price is actually $67 at checkout

  • this or the nvidea sheild?

    • Shield. No comparison.

  • I've got Chromecast but Stremio keeps going back to chromecast screen momentarily and buffers a bit when fast forwarding or even adding subtitles. Does firestick operate Stremio better?

  • Bought one today from Officeworks for $77.
It wasn't until I opened it that I realised it was micro usb. I had planned to use a usb-c hub to connect ethernet and extra storage, but I'm struggling to find something similar with a micro usb and power throughput.

Thinking about returning and getting a Chromecast.

    Does anyone have any solutions/suggestions?

  • +1

The price has gone back to $119
