Japan Golden Week is a series of four national holidays in Japan that occur within a seven-day period around the beginning of May.
The holidays are Showa Day (April 29), Constitution Memorial Day (May 3), Greenery Day (May 4), and Children's Day (May 5).

Accommodations are going to be expensive during these two weeks.

    • +9

Most YouTuber's I've watched essentially recommend you absolutely do not travel to Japan during Golden Week because it's insanely busy with domestic tourism.

      • +1

Yeah skip it, domestic tourism is way up that time of year, and prices along with it.

        • +1

          While all this is true…
The main cities like Tokyo actually become relatively “quiet” because everyone is trying to get out (the main highway routes and train stations are hell).

          • @stonedewok: Is that actually true? I'm really considering going since a typhoon impacted a good half of my trip last year. Paid $1700 for those flights back then 😭

            • @TeamSAXON: Having lived there for a few years, yes, Tokyo is much more bearable than many other places. It’s the time when a lot of people go back to their hometowns, visit family, go on “holidays”, etc.
So Tokyo is definitely no more busy than usual, if not more quiet. You basically just gotta avoid travelling out.

    • Japan = an densely populated country made even more dense during this week

    • Is camping allowed?

      • +1

I've camped in Japan on many trips⛺
(I hitchhike in rural & remote areas, away from much accommodation & English speakers. A slow but interesting form of travel. Locals like to show me their favourite places & share a meal.)

Paid camping areas can be expensive & not near cities.
It's not so usual, except at beaches etc. Many are only open 2 months a year - the summer swimming season. So basic camping other times can be free!

15 years ago paid $45 for 1… just for a tiny patch of grass, then had to pay for coin showers. BYO tent etc.
Have also swapped English conversation for free campsite.

Most officials say the Police will arrest you for unauthorised camping. Best not to be noticed, keep out of sight, taking tent down during day.
Only 1 officer on tiny island asked for Passport & what I was doing. Came back to check I was OK. Most rural Police are surprised to see a Foreigner.

In more remote areas, there are official free camping spots. Otherwise young Japanese park their motorbikes & camp in the sand dunes.
Areas along coastline have wild areas (for protection from Tsunami), so no one would notice camping there, as long as there isn't a Tsunami!

I've camped free on beaches, in the mountains @2500m, out of sight in parks (homeless sleep there), beside rural train lines (toilet at station has power point, first train of morning will wake you up).

        Just show respect.
Friendly people have invited me for coffee & breakfast. Given me money (wrongly assuming I'm poor).

But likely camping would be an issue in cities.

Otherwise try old business hotels (have stayed for under $20pp a night in own room, communal facilities). Osaka has plenty.
Japanese Youth Hostels can be great. One was like a luxury hotel.
Some Tourist Information Centres can help find cheap accommodation.
Airbnb & backpackers are other options I use.

    • I was told this as well, however the flights we purchased, Wed 1st May, was significantly cheaper than the following weeks so we decided to just suck it and see.

I was still able to find good accomadation around the middle of Osaka for under $200/night. Plenty of accomodation from low 100s and up was showing available. I checked out the hotel we are staying in Osaka at later in May and the same room was about $75 more per night during Golden week, so yeah some of them will be more expensive.

We have not planned any big tourist attractions thou for the first few days. Will see how the crowds are.

So if you are thinking of going, just check out accomdation/prices first before booking.

I’m surprised insurance companies still covering Jetstar possible flight times and dates, please allow extra travel days, time off work, house sitters and prescription sedatives to your travel costs. Have list of nearby airport accom handy so when flight cancelled AFTER your airport arrival, you’re not sleeping on the floor. Or just book with reputable carrier for a few bucks more, especially after factoring in Jetstar drip pricing

    • +4

Totally agreed. Stay away from Jetstar if you wanna enjoy your holiday!

      • ugh, 6:10am departure so at airport 5am latest. $68 pp for 20kg bag..

        • +5

It will be 6:10pm by the time you depart the airport ;)

    • +9

I had my return flight from Singapore cancelled. They gave me the option to rebook for free the next day on an Emirates flight and paid 200AUD towards my accommodation as well as covering my transport to and from the airport.

I had a lovely additional night in Singapore.

Life is what you make of it I suppose.

      • +3

Great that it worked out for you.
I also understand many others who are less fortunate..wanting to be in meetings/work or coordinating travels with others or had to cancel hotel/transport booking with no refund..etc
They don't have the option to make lemonade when Jetstar throws eggs at them

      • What do you mean by life is what you make of it?

Do you mean if you had a bad experience like many others you would be ok with it also?

    • Statistically at the moment jetstar is doing very well.

Virgin is by far the worst airline in terms of delays/cancellations.

Jetstar is great for international flights I find personally, and this leg to Japan is a great option for Jetstar. Never had issues and flown 3/4 times with them there.

      • +2

Jetstar is so bad for international flights, especially to Japan, 4 out of 5 had issues!

        • Do you have any stats on that?

At least domestically Virgin has more than twice the cancellations of either Jetstar or Qantas. And in some months Jetstar has better on time departures and arrivals than even Qantas.

          https://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month

          • +2

@DingoBilly: On top of that, the on flight service has been poor for many years. Don't know where to find the stats, but I believe many people here can definitely echo that. Obviously, they are cheap for a reason. I am not saying every single flight are bad but many of them were, comparing to other airlines.

  • -5

PSA These periods are extremely hot in Tokyo.

    • +4

Not so, having travelled there many times.

      Average max temp for Tokyo:
      April 19
      May 23
      June 26

July & August can be very hot & humid

      • -3

Myabe @Cheapsize was referring to the actual periods, not predictions based on historical data?

        • +4

No one can know future weather conditions. Best guess is the past temperature records.

Accuweather has similar future temperature predictions to past averages above.

But I've given out warm clothes & sleeping bags to homeless in Osaka in April a few years back. It was bitterly cold. Tokyo had similar conditions.

So unlikely to be "extremely hot".

          • -4

@INFIDEL: I hope your narrowmindedness with respect of weather prescience doesn't see you dangerously overdressed.

            • +2

@dzhay: So you think extensive personal experience in Japan & it's weather = "narrowmindedness"??😜

I've journeyed through Japan so many times over almost 2 decades. Often for months at a time. Across most seasons & locations.

Survived the odd typhoon & earthquake that killed others!
You always need to be prepared for changing conditions!!

The incorrect "extremely hot" above seemed a warning not to buy flights at that time of year.

Not what clothes to wear when there!! As you seem to think😜

I pack clothes just before the flight, based on weather conditions & predictions at the destination. Carrying clothes appropriate for the expected conditions. Including my hikes at 2500+m in Japan.

As I said, I've sourced & given out free clothes for those in need in Japan (Myanmar & other countries). I've written about it on Ozbargain.

I have a lot of experience finding clothes there! Usually wearing & bringing back old Kimono & Yukata (Japanese robes) free or bought extremely cheaply in slum areas I help out in.

Tip: Clothes are always available at every country I've been. They are my souvenirs of travel.

Travelling light (carry on), bringing mainly the more specialised clothes for extreme weather conditions, it's much easier to pack & travel. And avoids expensive baggage fees on budget airlines!

So never overdressed or underdressed on my world travels.

Even when meeting (the now deposed leader of Myanmar) Aung San Suu Kyi at the First International writers conference in Myanmar. (Wore national dress bought locally.)

        • +2

not predictions based on historical data?

Wtf do you use? the size and shape of your droppings?

        • Yeah I was. I've been during that time. In my experience it was very hot because it was humid and the city has a heat island effect. It's normal in parks and open spaces though. Go when you want it's great anytime but Golden Week.

          • +1

@Cheapsize: Been in Japan (& S Korea) for Golden week a few times. Children's Day is great around Shrines - boys are dressed in cute Samurai outfits. Very Japanese.

It's about the busiest time to travel in Japan! Best to get to a good destination before the rush starts.

Outside of major centres it's fine if you've booked accommodation. Booked online a month ahead, just for myself. Settled down for a relaxing week, instead of rushing around like most.

Stayed in fishing & Onsen (natural hot spring) town of Ito, in a historic wooden Ryokan beside a stream, with private Onsen. Was the only Foreigner.

Heading further South on the Izu Peninsula, there are amazing Rotemburo (outdoor hot baths) on a cliff overlooking the sea. And spectacular curved golden beaches. Australian Embassy has their holiday place there.

Stayed near the bottom of the Peninsula, in a Airbnb beside the sea for 12 days on a later trip. Watched women diving for seafood just outside.

Absolutely beautiful, 2.5 hours SW of Tokyo. One of my (many) favourite spots, that few Japanese seemed to visit.

            • @INFIDEL: Was your Izu peninsula trip in summer? That must have been amazing.

              • @TeamSAXON: Went to Izu after the giant kite festival in Hamamatsu in May (Golden Week). Neighbourhoods compete to bring the other massive kites down. Held in the sand dunes over 3 days.

Matsuri (festivals) around Golden Week are amazing🎏
I organise my visits around them.

Izu, surrounded by the ocean, beaches, hot springs & nature was wonderful. Booked for 6n, extended for another 6.

      • +2

        wow thats nothing

based on their tolerances - these people cant go to Bali/Malaysia/Ho Chi Minh during anytime of the year!

        • +2

Or living in many parts of Australia, most of the year!

BOM shows currently 30.5C outside for me here.
          17C in Tokyo🎏

The temperature in April - June seems pleasant for travel in Japan😊

My usual time to visit is for Sakura (cherry blossom) season (usually late March), staying for a month or 2. Never found it "hot", more bracingly cool mornings.

Visiting the many mountains or heading to Hokkaido is great to escape any hot weather.

          • @INFIDEL: How do you afford to stay for a month or two? Also what tips would you have for someone wanting to visit for Sakura? I have a sibling in Japan who I am ultra jealous of they get to see the Sakura every year! I went last year and desperately want to go back.

            • +1

@TeamSAXON: How do I afford it? A bit hard to explain…
I always find funds for (budget travel) travel. The less I spend, the longer I can travel!😊

I've written about my adventures in Japan a few times in Jetstar Japan Deals over the years. So here's another.

Had a high paying CBD consultancy - helping corporate client's realise what they are best suited to in life. Took my own advice… Retired in my 30ys to do what l like - travel. Only worked 4 days since.

I travel for the experiences, with different cultures & people. Used to travel overseas 9 months a year. UK & Europe were much more expensive.

Japan can be cheap if you understand how. Especially away from big cities & tourist areas. (But I also go there.)

It's about what type of traveller you are & why you're travelling.

Am an experienced, flexible, sole traveller, with plenty of time for slow & deeper experiential travel, used to roughing it on a budget. That definitely helps keep costs down.

I fit in with, learn from & appreciate the locals (they say I show respect & understanding). Some even ask me to explain their culture.
Have appeared on TV there performing Rakugo (Traditional art of storytelling, but in English) - which gives me more credibility.

Travelling most of Japan over many years… I still know very little Japanese language - people are too fast to help. Never been a problem.

Met an old man by a paddy field, who spoke no English. The interaction was more intense & memorable as we really had to work to understand each other. He had been injured by a hand grenade thrown by a US soldier in WW2. I had noticed his limp as he sat by me.

I keep costs down (in the past, always paid ~$400 return to Japan on Jetstar).

I aim for 50% of my nights stays to be free - but usually only achieve 30%.

I've camped free - waking on a beach in Kyushu to a Turtle laying it's eggs. Don't see that from a 5star hotel!

Airbnb in remote areas like Southern Izu was cheap (~$35/n a few years back).

Or $13/n in my own basic hotel room in Osaka.

I like to base myself somewhere cheap, to explore a region. That cuts down on travel costs.
So I often visit a different region of Japan each trip, rather than covering a large area in one visit.

I hitchhike in rural & remote areas. A great way to meet locals, who love to show me around.

People sometimes pay for my meals in restaurants.
I simply show my honest interest in their lives, as I did with my clients. It is always appreciated. And I learn & enjoy my travels more.

Have been "kidnapped" there a few times. People see my interest in their lives & culture, & want me to experience more of it. It can be hard to leave (especially if alcohol is involved).

One hitch with 10 museum tour guides in training - I was treated to 2 days learning about an historic mountain village I was interested in. All expenses paid. We had a ball!
When I left to camp by a stream where wild monkeys were playing - they thanked me! I had helped them in their training, and we had all had a so much better time because of it. So they gave me ~us$200!

Some Japanese call me "Very Lucky"!
They want me to stay, arrange work, to buy a house & a marriage partner!! It can be embarrassing.

The Sakura… No tips, I just visit & enjoy. As a Buddhist Monk said to me as the petals fell "How sad!". It's about the ephemeral nature of life. Enjoy it when you can.

Sometimes a short glimpse can be better than living a long time with such beauty.

Japanese often enjoy sitting under the trees, on blue plastic & getting drunk. A great snapshot of office culture as junior staff have to reserve the space for hours, then praise the boss…

I've chased the emerging Sakura blossom Front by Shinkansen. (My only fast rail travel.) Sometimes its better to calmly appreciate the blossoms where you are.

Looking forward to returning is one of the pleasures of Japan🎏

      Wrong.

      • See above for my explanation.

It's not a warning not to go for the temp. It's a warning that 23 in a heat island area feels like 30.
Just pack an extra pair of shorts.

The real warning is avoid Golden week.

  • -2

    hell why no march. geez

    • +2

Because cherry blossom season is the end of March beginning of April.

    • Better to book that time period a year out rather than a week out 🤣

      • how do i go about booking this out in Japan for 2025?

        • Most likely just checking hotels at this stage. But if you can make actual bookings, definitely do so. Or at least book hotels that give you the "pay at check in" options.

Thanks OP! Good deal even when adding bags and changeable fares.

Have a work trip that I was looking at booking so the dates are perfect.

To anyone worried about Golden Week, it is a bit of a pain in the ass but nothing too brutal.

Sometimes there's more accommodation in places like Tokyo because people leave and put up their places on AirBnB, but tourist spots and cities like Kyoto which take a lot of domestic visitors are stuffed.

      Good to know!

Available in SA school holidays - very rare for flight specials!

  • Lol, just paid $1690 for Qantas return on the same dates as above from SA….

    Oh well.

    • +3

At least you’ll get there :)

      • +1

Yeah exactly, and tbh, after you add bags and food to the jetstar flights, it's not a huge difference, plus you dont come away from the flight with back pain haha

    • Paid $1700 last year for a trip in August. It hurts but what can you do

  • +3

$670 for flights on shtstar and not even direct - nah go ANA/JL for $1k

  • Are the planes much nicer than their domestic range? That would be a long flight in those very average seats.

Long haul international is on B787-8 which is a bit better than domestic. Still very little legroom but the core benefits of the 787 still exist like the higher humidity and quieter cabin. I've done Melbourne to Honolulu twice at 189cm and it's… fine.

Flights to Japan however often connect through Cairns so you'll still possibly end up on an A320/1 for half the trip.

    Does WA not exist? 😔

    • WhatsApp? Yeah it works for me ;)

  • I was burnt by Jetstar in Seoul, fool me once… Friends also got recently burnt by these guys, in domestic to boot and lost a night of motor home hire + camp site stay.

When I do the math, I don’t see how it’s a bargain to fly with an airline that only sometimes delivers?!!

  • If I go mid April can I see cherry blossums? I will go to Osaka first? What do people recommend doing in Osaka?

  • Flights to Japan from Gold Coast depart at 6.40am. Anyone had problems getting a ride at that time to the airport?

Had to wait for 14 mins for an Uber in Broadbeach, which then cancelled. Called a Taxi instead.
