Luxury Escapes is rarely "cheap". They do add extras to their packages, but you can almost always go direct for cheaper.

    • I was on the hunt for affordable flights to Bali and this offer appears quite reasonable; I haven't come across cheaper that includes 30kg of luggage.

    • Cant confirm entirely as need to create an account to reach the booking stage, but actually it does seem significantly cheaper than direct and basically on par with the dodgy OTAs. How Luxury Escapes compares to dodgy OTAs I'm not sure, but I'm guessing much better given they acutally have good reviews and generally sell premium experiences so they have a reputation to uphold. This may be a rare example where 'always book direct' might not apply.

    Garuda Airlines

    Are they better than Jetstar?

Garuda is rated as a 5-star Airline by Skytrax.

You're likely thinking of Garuda circa 2007, when it was banned from flying over any EU country(!). From 2009 onwards they started their 'Quantum Leap' program and have really revitalised a lot (although not without claims of corruption dogging them, being the Flag Carrier as well of Indonesia).
They've got a LOT of baggage to lose tho (historical baggage, not customer baggage, hopefully)

they started their 'Quantum Leap' program

          Wow !!!

How did that campaign go for them?

quantum (noun) : the smallest amount or unit of something

            @jv: Seemingly very well.

Perhaps because they underpromised a quantum and overdelivered a leap?

          • @jv: leap
            /liːp/
            verb
verb: leap; 3rd person present: leaps; past tense: leaped; past participle: leaped; past tense: leapt; past participle: leapt; gerund or present participle: leaping

            1.
jump or spring a long way, to a great height, or with great force.

@beatthatflight: The adjective is 'quantum' though…

So quantum leap is defined as "the smallest height you can jump or spring"

@jv: you didn't scroll down on Cambridge's dictionary
Quantum: "an amount of something: " eg the amount of work
eg During this period, the quantum of oil production increased to 16.10 million barrels from 15.84 million barrels last year.

Even going back to the latin routes, it shares with 'quantity'.

But regardless, it's just marketing. They could have called it Brick Donuts and still failed/succeeded not based on the name.

                  @beatthatflight:

Quantum: "an amount of something: " eg the amount of work

A quantum leap is usually used to refer a transition of quantum states inside an atom.
The concept was introduced by Niels Bohr in 1913.
Niels Bohr was friends with Max Born, the grandfather of Olivia Newton-John who recorder the song 'Physic'al in 1981.

    • I remember flying with them in the year 2000, cheap return tickets to Japan 😬 plane tried to land twice unsuccessfully and finally headed to another island/airport.
I can still remember watching the runway and all of a sudden water 😳
Hopefully things have changed for the better…

      • That would have been very disturbing. Did they get you to your destination later that day or were you stuck there overnight?

Hopefully things have changed for the better…

They did manage to execute a very successful turnaround after being (deservedly) one of the favourite punching bags among commercial airlines. I have never flown them but wouldn't have any concerns to do so now.

Speaking of things that happened around 25 years ago, QF1 had a runway overrun on landing in Bankgok in September 1999. Fortunately no serious injuries, however in order to preserve their record of having no hull losses in the jet age Qantas took the risky decision to repair the hull rather than write it off.

        • Can’t remember exactly how long we waited but it was later in the day that we managed to fly back to board flights to Japan.
I was reminded of this incident when Garuda missed the runway in 2007.
Qantas had a reputation to uphold after being named in “Rain man” 🙄

          • @greenlantern: Ironically they did the unsafe thing in order to preserve a reputation for safety 😂

Realistically they acted as a business and took a calculated risk, and what's the worst that could happen … to the board members 😂

  • Flew economy with Garuda last Sunday from Sydney to Bali. Plane was nice/clean. 2-4-2 seat configuration.

Service was good. Got lunch then snacks just before landing.

I had the entire 4 seats to myself so I was able to lay down…

    .

  • Dont forget to stack with Amex offer for $100 cashback

  • Not to say your experience would be better, but in May QANTAS is only $100 more for the return trip.

  • Decades ago a Garuda flight almost landed at Essendon Airport rather than Tullamarine.

    • Planes approach (or even land at) the wrong airport to this day. Would have been pretty unremarkable decades ago.
