Nice! Hopefully some end of July-Early Sep tickets come up soon ^_^

    • Wasn't using this link or google flights (I'm a skyscanner gal) but I found $1200 BNE to LHR for end of Nov/early Dec. Seems like if you're okay with leaving/returning on weekdays you can find some absolutely killer prices outside of Christmas. $1200 was through Aunt Betty so I paid the extra $100 to book direct through China Southern (seems like Aunt Betty has mixed reviews and seemed worth the extra) but I truly was impressed.

  • Kul

  • Were sub $1000 flights to Europe ever actually a thing ? (Genuine question)

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/834033 from $890 return with Air China

      • Yes, on China Southern too a few weeks ago they had $995 Melbourne to Rome and $998 Sydney to Rome

I flew SYD<->Athens return with scoot for under $700 last year including $68 worth of meals. And no luggage.

      • How was it?

I also paid extra for an exit aisle or two. It was good. Long stay in Singapore both ways was good for me. From memory flights were on time.

I suspect a lot of these flights are in a class of fare that doesn’t allow for use of the free transit hotel facility. The transit hotel in the airport is still closed. Flew China Southern over the last two weeks and enjoyed the experience in economy, unlike most of the competition there are day flight options from and to Sydney

    • This is an important factor for long stopovers, how can we confirm?

      • You can call them and ask. But, in my experience with China Southern having flown this long haul flight more than once (pre-covid though), when you stop in Guangzhou you just ask at the desk, they arent strict about it.

        • +3

They are now, you actually need to rebook online the accomodation now which checks if your eligible, during both of my transits I heard of eligible customers being told at the desk that they had no availability for walkups. Ironically I was able to book the Novotel as I waited in the queue for a transit visa, which is one of the hotels. The transit visa folk were insisting on booked accomodation for them to issue a visa.

The rules for who is eligible for the accomodation changed in July last year https://www.csair.com/en/tourguide/transit_flow/free/?gad_so…

          If you book on their website it shows what fare bucket it’s in and the eligible ones are F/ J/ C/ D/ I/ O/ W/ S/ Y/ P/ B/ M/ h/ K/ U/ A/ L/ Q/ E. I was in N one way and Z on the way back.

I had a look at the cheap linked Syd-Amsterdam flights on the airlines website and they are in N and V eg

          • @markis10: Thx very helpful

          • @markis10: Huh - this is super interesting as I've used them twice prior to Covid and took advantage of the free hotel (even spaced my flights out since they used to do two nights) and just recently booked with them again, and as per your advice realise I'm not eligible. Worse yet, my parents are returning from Aus to UK next week and we assumed they would have one but couldn't get the online reservation to work, now I know why!

Thanks for the info - sad to see they got rid of that as it was part of why I always strongly recommended them to everyone looking to do UK to Aus on a budget.

    • yes. I did call them last year and the staff told me (in mandarin) that I am not eligible. Better to confirm with CS before you go/book.

However, the hotel near Guangzhou airport is cheap. Could get a decent one under $100.

    Flying over Russia!

  • In which city is the transit hotel in the airport is still closed? Are you allowed to exit hotel to explore china or do you need to stay in the intl terminal?

    • Guanzhou, their main hub and where most Australian flight go to.

    • Yep you can explore the city, flew from MEL to AMS, spent 19 hours in Guanzhou.

Just make sure you have data when you land to book taxi, as no one speaks a lick of english.

There is transit hotels in the airport that are expensive, but cheaper $10 ones 10 minutes out.

  • Wonder if there’s a sale fare one way in other direction such as London to syd mel bne and if they’ll come up in October.

Last week I booked using China Southern flights from Brisbane to London Heathrow via Guangzhou in June for $600 one way. Did a multi trip route with one day in Guangzhou. Still a few of those available.

  • Good price! The dates actually overlap with NSW school holidays. The only downside is the cabin class is Z, so no free transit hotel.

  • I just came back from my Europe trip flying with them, and was pleasantly surprised as the service was great.
Apart from not being able to do online check and long transit time on the way to Europe, I would definitely fly with them again for the price.

  • Did MEL to AMS for $1200 earlier this year, 100% worth it, EXCEPT for customer support to change tickets which is almost impossible.

Leg room was amazing could fully stretch out my legs and I am pretty tall.

Decent food, good drinks and clean toilets.

This is good for people who don't mind spending a day in china, and the annoying process of getting into china, which can take a couple of hours.

  • Wow does it takes a couple of hours to clear immigration? I thought they issue a transit visa on the spot?
