$999 at Bing Lee via eBay.

      • +4

        Bing Lee is local.

        • +3

Unless you’re south Australian I guess

        • +3

          Only in certain states

        • +1

Not if you live in WA.

Please remember the Commonwealth of Australia has 6 states and 10 territories. We're not all your neighbours.

          • @Ramrunner: We're discussing local vs grey stock. Not availability.

            • +1

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Understood. Local stock to me means stock kept locally (same state warehouse) as opposed to interstate or overseas. I've only ever seen it referred to as Australian stock vs Grey imports but I'm 51 and my son teaches me new phrases all the time so apologies.

    • Agreed not a deal as cheaper at bing lee.

If anyone is on the fence about getting one, I'm from the pc master race and have actually been enjoying it so much more than I normally would have thought. Got 2 young kids and am on the train to work, and it's so easy to just pick up and play. I researched and deliberated for ages on this, the go and the steam. I chose this just incase there were any issues with tearing that the go might suffer from. I've heard the go is good as well, but I haven't regretted this at all, and it was a few hundred cheaper.

It's also super easy to play modded/cracked games. For the best performance it does take being comfortable with windows to use, and it's definitely worth for some games, to set up a keyboard/mouse config for best play.

I'm mostly playing through my backlog of old games and have been very happy with the fps /quality. Marvel sun's /solasta/halo/greedfall

    • What are u using for game storage ? SSD or microsd ?

      • Just the base ssd storage atm. I've got a lot of my back catalog of games on it. If I were upgrading personally I'd probably just upgrade to a 2TB ssd. But I've got no shortage of options, and I can just delete the game after.

        • Thanks

          • +1

@ravzter: Also, I've found it easier to install team viewer on my pc and the rog, and create a shared network folder, so I can use my pc for sorting mods (like greedfall/marvel sun's) and then just transfer all the modded stuff over.

It's also made it easier for going through all the windows settings and stuff

            • @Littlebob86: i prefer taildrop via tailscale

opps cannot read, you do remote view stuff to for that i prefer DWService

              right click file/folder to transfer
              show more options
              send with tailscale
choose system you wish to send either connected to local network or over the internet
              automatically downloads to download folder

might only work with individual files, you can zip folders

              • @mantra: Thanks! I'll look into it! Any other suggestions? :)

    • Hey mate, what ages are the kids? Trying to get a sense of what age this system works okay at. Got an 18 month old at the moment and I find it hard to get any time to game, whether on my desktop or with a portable.

      • +1

18 month as well and like an almost 4 year old. Plus I work 4 days a week (and have the kids the other day), and the wife obviously hates me because she thought while life is this busy, she'll decide to start training for a marathon 😂

Make sure you set the power button to hibernate, not sleep. I haven't had any issues with any game crashing when turning it back on and just resuming where I left off. Takes like, 40 seconds?

      • +2

Also I'd recommend the carry case and official screen protector. And I leave mine in a high drawer 😂

      • The frustrating thing is when you finally get a chance to turn it on and game, there's potentially a lot of updates whether it be Windows, Asus, AMD, game updates, etc… and when you have only limited time to play (or are already exhausted) it can sometimes disincentivise you from playing.

I've got similar aged kids to Littlebob86 and the ROG Ally is great, especially when I need to sit in the room with them to sleep.

    • Great insight. Thinking of getting this or the legion go just to squeeze those little sessions.

Currently using a tab S8ultra to stream games from my desktop at 4k60. Works well but I can't haul it around the house as easy as this would be

      • Yeah I can't weigh in on the go. But if you keep reading reviews it's overwhelming and you get to a point you just need to make a decision.

I price matched mine at jbhifi with case and protector for $1100, while the go was $1400, and yeah, not even no regrets with the ally, I'm surprised at how much I enjoy it.

    • So no issue installing modded/cracked games via iso, and they all run smoothly?

      • No. I also use creaminstaller and creamapi on some games. I do most of the stuff via team viewer from my pc when I'm dealing with reviewing and installing a bunch of mods and setting up.

But yeah, it's Windows, so no issues.

    • Have u tried playing switch via ryujinx? Tried hooking it up to the telly? I've seen reviews but was wondering about real life experience.

      • +1

No, but I was going to start looking at emulators once I've played through more of my backlog of games

  • Has anyone tried running this as a full fledged Windows 11 PC?

    • To do what?

      • Office work. Browse, emails, Office, Teams, Citrix.

        • +2

As long as you had an external monitor and peripherals, it would be fine for an office pc

          • +1

@Littlebob86: Guess a dock would be handy.

So with an external 15" screen, this could replace a laptop?

            • @congo: Yeah. A laptop doesn't need much to run office stuff, and this is powerful enough to run games. So yeah.

        • I’ve successfully done full days of work on the Steam Deck attached to one of these

One can only assume this would be even better as it runs windows and is more powerful

          • @JJBB24: I thought SD uses SteamOS, did you dual boot into Window?

If so, the LED Steam Deck works out to be the cheapest laptop replacement option around $650:
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/818356

            • @congo: Nah sd uses Linux and steam os

              • @Littlebob86: Thanks, Haven't used Linux in ages.
Guess I go with either Ally or Legion Go or wait for the MSI Claw.

            • @congo: There's desktop mode for SteamOS. You can run Chrome and other Linux apps.

I've used my Steam deck with a lapdock for setting things up and general browsing on a few occasions.

              • @ihfree: Do you know if Teams and Citrix can run in Linux?

                • @congo: Not sure. Teams would likely run in the browser. Citrix - no idea.

                • +1

@congo: If you need anything other than simple browser-based apps then definitely don’t go the Steam Deck. Windows is the pick here

            • @congo: Just switch into desktop mode in SteamOS and use Chrome. Depends on your job of course, but if everything you do is in a browser it’s fine.

I’m using the LCD Deck also.

              • +2

@JJBB24: If guess if it's business, and reliability, you're best going with a Windows operating system, incase any last minute issues arise 🤷‍♂️ especially if you can get it as a tax write off

                • +1

@Littlebob86: LCD Steam Deck is a cheaper option, looks like I can run Teams and Citrix from browser, but it would be safer to pick a Windows base handheld for other Windows apps.

Thanks, I will get the Ally + dock.

    • +2

You’ll need a dock and 100w pd. It has issues with 65w pd when docked (won’t go to full performance). Other than that, it easily replaces a normal desktop with bt kbm. I’m trying to find a way to set it up in my car for an around the coast trip.

      • Why doesn't yours go into full pd when docked? My 65 watt charger does it. Unless your peripherals and other things are using that 65 w as well, then it won't run on full. But you don't need full mode for Windows stuff at all.

        • +1

It’s a known issue with third party docks and yes, I do intend to use other ports on the dock, that’s kinda the point. If I managed to get a portable monitor properly mounted on the ceiling of the car, that’s definitely gonna chew up some juice. ‘Windows stuff’ is a huge range. If I decided to edit some videos/photos for example since I’d be travelling, that’s gonna need some power.

          • @frugalftw: Yeah but editing videos isn't really just Windows stuff, that's editing video stuff.

With that rationale, everything done on the computer is Windows stuff.

            • @Littlebob86: Point taken.

I have found a bios release (323) that is supposed to have fixed the third party dock issue https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/changelogs/changelog-july-21-2…

I would still recommend 100w pd regardless, for running other peripherals if it’s used as a main pc. As a gaming device, you don’t really need a dock, a usb c to hdmi and usb c converter is sufficient, to be able to have power coming in while output video and audio.

    • It is a full fledged Windows PC.

My issue with the ROG Ally was it didn't seem to work with my Lenovo USB-C dock and display output. Worked fine with my other Lenovo TB4 dock though.

Asus Allys are more prone to hardware defects. Had to warranty exchange mine recently. SD card reader is not usable if you plan on any TDP beyond 15W performance mode. Heat damage will corrupt your SD cards (corrupted/permanently damaged 2 for me before I upgraded to 2TB SSD). There’s fan issues ramping up. There’s Asus BIOS & ACSE which has failed more than couple times for me requiring restore…

If you are looking for superior performance I recommend Legion Go (I have that as well). The Legion Go objectively outperforms the Asus Ally in all games due to faster RAM when testing at like for like conditions at 720p, 900p, 1080p.

Yes I know legion go is more expensive but it’s so much more versatile. Just my recommendation as 4+ months owner of both.

    • Just ordered my LeGo - can’t wait to play with ut

    • +1

I think they have fixed the SD card reader because I've been smashing turbo mode for 3 months and it still works.

  • +2

I still think the Steam Deck OLED is a better option for most situations after having owned everything out there. ESPECIALLY if you want something you can stop or pickup at anytime without fiddling as much.

Raw performance doesnt mean much at the expense of stability, the sheer amount of hardware related failures, inferior software/support, the fact that your microSD WILL BREAK (not if but when) due to heat, etc etc.

I have spent more time having to get things to work on either Legion or Ally, and ymmv depending on what you play but things break so often its annoying.

    • It's like these other manufacturers tried to jump on a fad without realising what makes the Steamdeck so good (no messing around thanks to native integration from having one company make both the hardware and software).

Handhelds like these have been around for years. Years. But the experience of actually using them has been subpar. Nobody wants to screw around with the issues of pc gaming on a handheld. Steamdeck has the integration that smooths those issues out and makes them disappear (mostly). That's why it's so good.

    • +1

Totally agree that raw performance is nothing without software optimization, that’s the value the steam deck provides. If possible, could you give me an example of how you “had to get things work on the legion or ally”? Just curious to see what’s involved versus the steam deck. Thanks.

      • i think this is why the Switch is still going strong!
whilst the others are all super tempting, i haven't found the need for one just yet.

  • +1

Also this has some great stuff in it. I disabled the intro start up noise

I've come for the "dads with young kids, not enough time for gaming via regular-sized devices" support thread.

    • -1

Welcome. I'm on the fence for this reason.

    • Related…
Once I got a Switch, I found myself playing games way more. Even at night when everyone's asleep, I take it to bed and play there. I could play it on the TV, but there's something about playing games under the covers that feels nice.

I sure hope dockable handhelds are the new way to go for all Nintedo consoles going forward.

Consider the Switch OLED. There's a huge catalog of games now. You can get one second hand for under $250 or so. Of course, if you don't like Nintendo games, then forget the Switch and get one the Windows ones or Steam Deck.

    • +1

Here … 😔 Unfortunately can't justify paying 1k for something I probably won't use enough but I really want one … Maybe ally 2 lol

      • +1

same, as much as i want this or the steamdeck to clear my backlog of steam games, can't quite justify the price given i can just turn on the desktop =(

  • This pretty much shits all over the Steam Deck

    • Except that the steam deck "just works" when you turn it on
