  • Same price as the old New IPAD. :)
Will buy next year, when I will travel.

    • +2

Does 'old New' cancel itself out, making that the 'Regular iPad' now?

      • +1

This might explain the different versions :)
        http://teamcoco.com/video/conan-highlight-new-apple-ad-the-i…

Seriously, calling it the "New" iPad was asking for problems the moment it was announced. Even calling it the "Retina Display" model is stupid and confusing, as the 3rd gen has a retina display too! I think people will start referring to them by generation regardless of Apple's stupid naming conventions. They lost me years ago when they started referring to models with phrases like "the white one" instead of by CPU or speed etc.

So the 3rd gen is being discontinued, the 4th gen is changing it's dock interface, camera and CPU, otherwise it is the same. Surprisingly, they are still pushing the 2nd gen as an economy (non-retina) model.

Also, this spoof on the iPad Mini might help with the differences and shortcomings on all the models:
        http://www.iclarified.com/25398/banned-ipad-mini-promo-video

        • gotta wonder if they knew they were bringing out another model this year and for that reason dropped the number in the name so the average consumer was either confused or thought the 3 didnt exist/was the same as the 4 .
knowing of course that LTE and those millions of pixels would be very hard to push on existing CPU and battery combos.

        • As far as I can tell, the 4 is just an iPad 3+. The battery capacity and screen etc are the same. They have essentially just done a cpu and camera upgrade mid-model, not really introduced any groundbreaking new features. The new cpu is 2x as fast but doesn't draw any more power than the old one. The iPad 3 is powerful enough to push all those pixels etc.

        • In that case every iPad is basically a 1+. They've all been minor upgrades in one component or another.

  • +2

iPad 10" need to go on a diet. Too thick, too heavy.

    • +9

I thought you were Dr Phil for a second there…

    • Should get the 2nd gen one instead since it's actually thinner and lighter.

      • +2

Except its screen looks like ass, compared to newer devices.

  • -3

Meh this is the 'normal' price at the Apple Store. Give us some discounts off the RRP BigW and Tar-zhay!

    • Can you actually get this price without the price match?

    • narh, if u go to an Apple store, the price will become $539. You save 40 bucks.

  • Where are the Apple fan girls/boys? Thought iPad 4's would be all snatched up by now…

    They probably prefer iPad Minis…

    • +9

All feeling like chumps for buying the "New iPad" 7 months ago. :(

  • I price matched the iPad with Retina Display 16GB WIFI at JBHIFI on Monday, with Harvey Norman's $456 offer. I called my local shop and asked if they'd match the Harvey Norman deal, and they offered me $455 no hassels.

I bought it home, tried it out and returned it the next day for a full refund. A cool piece of technology, but too user friendly for me.

Either way, JBHIFI will price match Harvey Norman's $456 offer thats popped up here recently. Sorry I can't offer a recipt.

This was at the Camberwell JBHIFI store in Melbourne.

    • +1

      'Too user friendly'?

      • I didn't realise how limited the operating system was. I want to do whatever I want to do on a computer, not browse and trial apps - hoping theres one out there that does what I need it to do.

        • +2

Yea, you can probably invent one. But hey, there is no free lunch in the world. People don't just sit around and start making free quality apps for nothing.

        • +2

The biggest issue IMO is Apple's restrictive OS & appstore. There are APIs they've written to utilise the GPU for video playback (for instance) but they won't approve anything onto the appstore that uses them. Why? Because they want everyone using the inbuilt video player, and too bad if that doesn't do what you want (eg, play 1080p files over the network without recoding).

        • Jailbreak it - can then run lots of non-Apple-authorised apps - although if you want to really tweak the OS you would be better off with an Android OS tablet instead.

        • +3

Shouldn't need to jailbreak a device to be able to use its capabilities, but yes, better off with an Android which is why I've got one on order.

        • Completely untrue. Heaps of really talented programmers release software gratis, and I don't mean disgusting ad supported versions

      • -1

Probably a nerdy Android (never pay for apps) type user…

        • +3

Keep dreaming about Steve Jobs, your probably a creative hipster iSheep (buy apps that should be free) type user.

    • What is the cheapest 3rd gen 16GB with cellular?

      • want to know as well…

      • $559

        http://store.apple.com/au/product/FD366X/A/refurbished-ipad-…

Don't be put off by the wording "refurbished". I just received a "refurb" 16GB wifi and it looks like 100% new.

        • Thanks. I'm only after new ones.

        • as siuol above implied, with iPads refurb is their term for the old model they are getting rid of VS something used they have cleaned the dust out of

    • Looks like you are talking about this. which 3rd gen ipad.
      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/ipad-wi-fi-16gb.html

I think 4th gen ipad is available from today only.

      • Thats the one! The Ipad I got for $455 from JBHIFI was a new Ipad 3. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

Thats also the deal they price matched/beat.

        • Stupid apple with their ridiculous naming conventions. Can we establish an Ozbargain protocol for describing Ipads, ie. always specifically state 3rd generation, 4th generation etc?

        • You can't even call it iPad 2012 lol.

    • if you bought it on monday its a different ipad mate
your talking about the 3rd gen "the new ipad" NOT ipad with retina display =)

      • looks like topic was covered lol.. shoudlve scrolled down sorry

      • The stupid thing is that the 3rd gen does have the 'retina' display…

  • hmm do apple price match or do i have to refuse my delivery or return it when it comes lol

    • apple price match? lol

      • +1

The Apple Store actually will price match!!!

      • yeah they usually don't price match ipad …just other mac stuff …going to return it LOL

      • +1

        They do.

        • we rang apple and they said to return new one (4th gen) …so got one at big w today :)

sold old one on ebay already for $480 (3rd gen) - ebay fees - postage + $498 (4th gen) - $49.80 gst refund at airport soon = $20 for upgrade

upgrade wasn't even needed but 3rd gen will drop in resell value today onwards

        • +1

It won't quite be a refund of $49.80 as the method used to determine the GST on a product is to divide the price paid by 1.1 and the difference between that figure and the price paid is the GST component.
I don't mean to sound pedantic but I thought I would let you know the exact method they use.

        • true. close enough :)

        • wow how did you manage to sell it for $480?

I'd love to sell mine for that price :P

          or even $460

          iOS 5.1.1, like new!!

        • Before the release date of Ipad 4 I suppose, you can probably get that price because some buyers would still think a new one costs $539 at Apple stores.

  • ah just bought refurb 3rd gen,

    this is only $80 more,

might return that and get the 4th instead.

    • It is essentially the same, different charger plug, and a slightly better camera for those that use an ipad for a camera (I refer to them as tools) Save your $80!

      • +1

It also has the A6X chip found in the iphone 5

      • I think twice the speed and the new connector is worth the $80 for another 2-3 years :-)

  • -1

Same price when the ipad 3 just came out…

  • +3

So is Ipad with Retina the new one and it was just released? And would be iPad 4 if they stuck with numbers?

I was only just looking into Ipads now. Apple website had "Ipad 2" and "Ipad with Retina". I assumed that was Ipad 2, and the one without any numbers was the one that was called "The new Ipad" (which I think was Ipad 3).

But now it looks like the one that's called "with Retina", is an even newer one that succeeds the one that was 3rd gen (I think) called: "The New Ipad"

So why does Apple website only list:
    Ipad 2
Ipad with Retina (which would be ipad 4)

Wouldn't they only keep the latest 2 models:
    Ipad 3 (The New Ipad)
Ipad 4 (Ipad with Retina Display) - which is really the newest one now…

That's confusing me if The Retina is really a new one that has come after the 3rd gen or is the 3rd gen.

    • New iPadS (S for speed) definitely the name they should have gone with

  • +2

The New Ipad, the New New Ipad, Ipad 3, Ipad 4, The New Ipad Gen 3, Gen 4… This is getting ridiculous. No doubt people are getting ripoff somewhere because they are getting sold the previous model without knowing any better.

  • Whats the best price out there for the latest IPAD with 16GB + CELLULAR?

  • calling ipad 4 "ipad with retina display" is just dumb.
and what are they gonna call ipad 5th gen? the "new new ipad with higher retina display and thunberbolt port"?

    the deal itself is meh.
    this is average store price.

  • no no no, its not 4th gen, its just NEW iPAD. Then, even when its all old and crappy, its still NEW!

Steve Jobs is also still ALIVE in applespeak…and his multi-million dollar yacht is attractive (not!)

    http://www.google.com.au/search?q=steve+jobs+yacht&hl=en&rls…

  • thanks just grabbed 16GB from Sth Yarra Store

Even though i wanted 32gb I couldnt justify $150 for 16GB of flash memory

    • +1

Just buy a cheap Sandisk memory card. Oh, that's right, Apple don't allow you to expand the memory like that because they wouldn't make any money out of it. I have an iPad 3rd gen and enjoy it but hate Apple's hardware lockdown mentality. This is why I could never buy an Apple computer and have it as my sole computer. The thought of not being able to customize it as I would like is a big turn off. Bad apple.

  • I don't know why they didn't just adopt the "iPad (Late 2012)" naming system; it works fine the their Macs, and it'd be leaps and bounds better than the current mess.

    • If I was Steve Jobs, I would have a field day publicly criticizing Apple's iPad naming convention.

      • Except if you were Steve Jobs, you would be dead…

        • Lol my bad, I meant Steve Ballmer.

  • Can we buy this online and pay by wish gift card?

  • Just call it iPad with lightening connector, naming confusion solved!

    • So you think the next model won't have a lightning connector? The confusion will still remain, much like calling the 4th gen model "iPad with retina display", because the 3rd gen has one and I dare say the 5th gen at least will have one.

      • Maybe call it by the CPU, say A6X ipad, just like the Japanese call the car models by the engine model.

        • Why not just call it 1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen? Or even iPad 1/2/3/4?

        • -1

Seriously? I got negged for that???

        • +1

          Apple is watching you :)

  • off topic, can someone recommend a cheap quality case?
these for the kid so need a durable one.
    tia

    • +1

Bought a cygnett was for ipad 2 but fitted well for ipad 3 too. Only good for light drop from dinning table height. Was on half price $15 at Target. COTD has it for $10 + shipping at the moment.

      • will it fit ipad 4?
please post the link, don't know how to search on cotd

        edit: is this the one?

        • +1

iPad 2 is 8.8mm thick, iPad 4 is 9.4mm. Also the cutout for the dock connector will be different, it's quite small for the lightning connector and large for the old 30 pin plug. Everything else looks the same from the specs. The other thing is the iPad 4 has illumination for the back camera, so I don't know how that affects the camera cutout. I'd recommend getting a dedicated cover for the right model, they won't be far away. Even trying to shoehorn a iPad 2 cover onto the iPad 3 was hit and miss, it also is slightly thicker and "hard" covers were inflexible enough not to fit. I did manage to get the softer PU (polyurethane) types to stretch enough to fit.

        • +1

Soz didn't know you were after one for ipad 4. Try to compare ipad2 and 4 side by side then. The case has been discontinued at Target (don't know why as Apple is still making ipad 2) so like endotherm said it is a hit and miss but the quality is not bad at all for the price.

        • +1

          Yes.

  • I have got an ipad unopened and receipt make me an offer first come come first served !

    Its still in cellophane unopened.

    $490 ONO

  • Why waste money buying a "RETINA DISPLAY" practically useless "iTunes" slave Ipad when you can buy so many other awesome tablets on the market for $500. Make a wise decision this Christmas and buy Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
I did and cant be more happy throwing away my useless Iphone and Ipad.
