  • 1B016A so … 16GB ?

They're a bit thin on specs for the product.

    • Yeah, no clue for 16GB or 32GB?

  • Yes, 16GB. Australian retailers don't stock 8GB unless you import it from overseas.

  • $249 wow …. any lower …. But why can't OW stock it so that we can price match.

    • OW does have stock in some stores, but out of stock in the online shop.

      • I could not find any stock in Sydney.

But I really want to try out the iPad mini first to see how thin and light it is compare with Nexus 7.

        • +8

be sure to also see how ridiculously overpriced it is ;)

        • +4

I just played with one at JB, it's actually insanely light, for an iPad. Not used to them being so thin. It's also a noticeable amount thinner and lighter than the Nexus 7.

But: screen is crappy compared to the Nexus 7.
Personally I'd 100% go for the Nexus cause of the price, but unfortunately as far as iPad apps vs Android tablet apps, theres no comparison, iPad wins for sure. Android IS getting there though.

        • +11

Perhaps this might help you. Android app offerings can only get better, whereas nothing will improve the iPad mini's hardware once you buy it?

        • +3

iPad's app offering is already good and can get even better. So you can start using your iPad Mini effectively out of the box. Screen is like iPad 2's, but on a smaller screen, so the PPI is higher, but not as high as Nexus 7. Best to take a look at it yourself to decide. Speed and smoothness of user interface, I would say iPad Mini is a bit better. Battery life, iPad Mini is better. Cameras, iPad Mini is better. Build quality and design, iPad Mini is better.

Think of it this way, get the one that gives you the best overall experience. Don't just look at the specifications.

Price match at Bing Lee and get the $30 Amex credit, brings it down to $219 :)

    • Going to Haymarket at lunch to this very deal. Wish me luck :)

      • Plz do report back to us ! Cheers & good luck!

        • I'd be there already if it wasn't for bloody 12pm meeting! Will report back this arvo!

        • +1

I chatted to Bingers online and they said they can match but not beat GGs @ $249.

        • Matching is good enough for me. Cheers!

        • +12

I don't even know how to answer your question.

        • They can match but cannot beat? So you mean not lower than $249 but can match $249?

        • +18

that generally is what "match" and "beat" mean…

        • +3

          Wow…

        • Yeah I forgot GG can beat.

        • Done. Had to wait a bit but they matched no problem at Haymarket Bing Lee :D

        • +20

In true ozbargain style I also used the free CBD shuttle to get there.

        • So also got your AMEX $30

        • Yep. Well, should do in 5 days or so.

        • working in the city, i am not aware of the free shuttle. we usually walk from market street to westpac building. any timetable?

        • +1

when you consider the health benefit, walking is better.

    • have you done this or just thinking of this?

      • +1

Just suggestion for $10 I think they will match it and you don't need to tell them you are going to use AMEX to pay for it.

        • can you get price matching online?
edit: yes u can. chat online to staff

  • -4

I can see the price of this dropping very fast over the next 6 months. I expect it will be $149 before too long.

    • +5

      I don't think so.

    • +2

$199 is probably possible. $149 is a bit too low to cover the cost price.

      • +1

Well, few months ago when some sources said they are barely making any money out of the tablet. Dunno how it can go any much cheaper.

    • I doubt it, google have already said they sell it pretty close to cost price.

  • Great price from a local store — $226.37 for those claiming back GST for business use. I don't think it would drop down to $149 though. None of the previous Nexus products have dropped down to that low. They just stop production when it gets too out-dated.

    • it is under $300. how could we claim the gst? by buying more stuff to make it over 300?

      • +2

No matter how much you can always claim GST during GST return.

      • He is running a business as the owner of the ozbargain.. It's the benefit of have a business with steady revenue.

        • In general, if your business is registered with GST, then you can claim back your GST when you do your BAS, i.e. when you pay the GST you owe to the government. Then you claim back the cost of the item at tax return time (assume that the expense is for conducting your business).

You don't even need "steady revenue". It applies to big corp with hundred million $ turnover, as well as part-time sole trader business that sells bugger all on eBay.

        • -2

Nah. You have to have reach certain revenue figure to be able to register for GST. Otherwise everyone could just open up a "business" and start claiming gst refund.

        • +1

no. i think you dont have to reach certain figure to register for gst. if the revenue is only $5k/y, u still can register for gst, while it is not compulsory for you. however, if you want to claim gst return, first of all, you have to pay. then the figure plays a role.

      • formal: You're thinking about TRS, whereas scotty is referring to claiming tax back as business use.

  • You can get it same price on google play

    the 32g is 299

    • +1

but then you need to add shipping….

    • The 16GB is $249 there + shipping.

  • +12

I have got $250 worth of GG gift card that I bought at 20% discount few months ago. So it will actually cost me $200.

    • +4

      well played, sir, well played

  • This vs iPad mini

    • +13

      This. Clearly.

    • Coming from a former Nexus 7 owner…Get the Mini. Nexus 7's design is poor (too much bezel, bad speaker placement, thick and flimsy feeling), poor on battery life (had to get mine replaced due to charging issues among other things) and has a dire market place for tablet apps. Can only recommend this as a budget/compromise device. Or look at the Nexus 10. Still an ugly device, but at least it has a nice screen.

      • I have a Nexus 7 and think it is awesome, I love the soft touch back and the unit feels extremely solid to me. Maybe you had one of the early models that had productions issues? Personally I think it is phenomenal value at $249.

        • Hi Martyn, could you please comment on the battery life that Tetsuma claims? This will be a huge drawback for me choosing the 7 if this is true… Thank you.

        • i get 10-11 hours of ebook reading on one full charge (not rooted or anything like that).

  • sssooooo tempting, but i'll wait it out, I see a price drop in the near future

    • There was one last week! And Google are selling this at cost. You might be waiting a while for the next price drop…

  • +1

Register your Amex with binglee deal and buy the 7 with them using your amex online with free shipping $259( maybe price beat in store)-$30 credit back=&229,winning! maybe less if you go in store.

  • do dick smith stock this model? i want to see how good the screen is.

  • +2

cmonnnn gooogle give me the 32gb 3G version in australia already! gives me an excuse to upgrade my ageing galaxy tab 1 :)

  • Any news when the retailers will be stocking the 32gb?

    • +1

I called JB Hi-Fi and they said it would be a week or two before they have them.

  • +1

people might also like to try the group buy from DWI, it's $215 + $3.22 shipping with insurance, but has to get to 70 buys to activate, currently only at 17…

    • +1

Posted a few time and got deleted I think they can't get enough people.

      • +1

ah cool, glad I didn't post it up then!

        • has anyone bought from dwidigitalcameras.com.au before? tempting.

    • Slightly off topic, but I called them and they said that it is HK stock (original and genuine) with Australian warranty. Any one see any issues with the HK stock ?

      • Shouldn't be as the devices on Play store are ASIAN as well. They are shipped from overseas, not from AU itself. As long as they are giving you an AU charger plug, it should not matter as there is no difference in the build or quality of the Nexus tabs. They are universal afaik.

        • Called them up to get more details and they said it doesn't have an Australian plug but they will ship it with an adapter. Also said it is a genuine and original product with 1 year Australian warranty.

    • that's a great price though….more people should buy it

    • I ordered one from DWI for my mother yesterday and I have received an email to say it has been shipped. I have never bought group buy before, so I don't know if it is normal to ship before the 70 purchase limit, but as long as it arrives safe and sound it will be a merry christmas. :P

  • I'm pretty sure you get another 12.5% for RACQ members

    • How does this work? Does it also work for NRMA members in NSW?

    • It's 12% but the T's & C's mention

"Percentage off is calculated against everyday ticketed prices in store. Personal purchases only and not available in conjunction with any other offer. Excludes finance, Apple, Miele, Asko, Gaming, computers, Gift Cards, pre paid cards and recharge card"

Pretty sure they will put this into the 'computer' category and therefore be discount nazi's

  • Kogan have just dropped to $239 + Postage

    • when its $249 locally thats still not cheap enough

  • shouldnt these drop in Nov, when the nexus 10 comes?

    • you mean the price drop they just had when the nexus 10 and nexus 4 was announced in october?

    • Already came.

  • Just picked up a 16gb at GG Frankston VIC. The shelf price still showed $319. The nice sales rep gave me cash price for $244.
Saw a 5 day clearance sign when leaving the store.

  • Got mine in GG Cannington for in store advertised price of $239.

  • Bought for $227.05 from office works price matching kogans 239

    • thats all well and good….after you have scored this bargain….you should go to the manager and tell them to learn their staff and walk out laughing.

  • He was actually the most senior worker there and was telling his staff koga price match was acceptable. Was at the midland store in w.a

fwiw the best price I've seen anyone score thus far is $200. Officeworks ftw!

    http://s9.postimage.org/64mjxihtr/nexus_7_200.jpg

Some lucky dude from whirlpool manage to scoop that price. Perhaps he knew someone that worked there, but you can try your luck. :)

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1951730&p…

Edit: I see now that was a returned because the charger wasn't working, but you never know your luck, you might find someone to match that price. :)

    • if you read the receipt as well it was priced at $200 for a price match + being ex-repair, so I guess that accounts for the extra discount

  • Just picked mine up at GG at Mildura getting a price match of Kogans price if $239. He didn't actually ask to see the ad, so I guess I could have bluffed and gotten it cheaper…

  • Bought this tablet for my missus @ Harvey Norman a few days ago for $299 including 3 years warranty worth $35 (yeah, I regretted as soon as I left the store but somehow I got sucked into it). Saw this post on OZbargain so I took it back to HN and made them to price match GG to $249 including 3 years warranty. Guess that would make this tablet $214 (249-35). It would have been a real bargain if I didn't buy the extra warranty.

    • Pity that the 3y warranty doesn't cover obsolescence :-D

    • it is amazing you ever had this ideal of buying extra warranty….
