    • Would it reset the LHC loading after join?

Why would it reset the loading? The loading calculations are legislated.

  • For 60% extra, would you get glasses for free or it is only 60% back?

    • 60 percent back

    • Curious about this question as well. On Specsaver's site they claim to have a no gap promo for Bupa customers. I wonder if it's still only 60% back in that case. https://www.specsavers.com.au/health-funds/bupa

      • On Specsaver's site they claim to have a no gap promo for Bupa customers

It's a Specsavers promotion. Ask Specsavers.

An Eligible Bupa Health Insurance Policy is any single, single parent, single parent plus, couple or family or family plus combined Domestic Hospital and Extras product or packaged product issued by Bupa and excludes:

    Any hospital product when combined with Extras Saver cover;

Is the Extras Saver cover the actual name or some kind of classification? I looked at the extras options for family and I cannot find anything mentioning Extras Saver. Was wondering if I can just take the Freedom 50 Extras.

    • Would also like to know this

    • The Extra Saver is EXCLUDED from this offer. You have to take the next one up. You have to move the arrow to the left to see them all. Freedom 50 Extras is the next one up

      • Thanks for confirming. For my quote, the lowest was Freedom 50 extras.

Im currently on HCF hospital gold $500 plan. Family of 6 with two toddlers and twin 1 year olds.
My premium has now gone up to $470 a month.

Anyone in a similar situation know if I'm getting hosed here?
When i use the government's private health insurance comparer it says my policy should be $370 a month.

Are health insurers like car insurers? They bump up your premiums ? I was under the impression that because HCF was a non-profit that they didn't raise premiums willy nilly.

    Cheers for any advice.

    • +2

HCF are fine. Its too hard to tell if it's right for your circumstance and tax rate. For you to be on Gold, someone in your family must be very sick and need more than the usual hospital cover. Otherwise, you should just drop your hospital cover enough to what youre willing to pay and need covered.

      • Thanks very much mate

    • Are health insurers like car insurers?

      No.

  • +2

Perfect thank you, my 6 weeks free with Queensland Country Health finishes on 16/4 and I wasn't sure who to move to next to get the best value.

  • -1

Is it 12 months since the end or start of your last Bupa subscription?

  • +1

If I exhausted my yearly optical limit for Bupa (resets Jan 2025), can I move to AHM and my optical limit will reset in July 2024?

    • +1

Yes, thats why i do and i have contact lenses that will last me to mid 2026 lol

      • Nice, would you need to join before the July 2024 reset or can be done afterwards say Sep 2024?

  • Anyone with large lifetime limits with BUPA ever churned out keeping their limits with another provider?

    • +1

Lifetime limits carry on. As long as you maintain similiar cover when you churn

      • What's a Lifetime limit? And why would you want to keep them?

  • My first day on this
    :(

  • So bupa does not offer free glasses and free yearly dental clean as other provider?

    • They do for dental but only for their top extras unfortunately.

    • -1

Goodness. Read the terms under each of the different policy tiers.

  • We get 6 weeks free and have to maintain the membership for 8 weeks to get $700 in points , is that correct ?

  • Good luck with Bupa for those interested. The minmum waiting time over the phone is 50 mins… I signed up 3 months ago for some sign up offer, cancelled immediately after 3 phone calls.

    • You can’t cancel without calling , did you get the points ?

    • -2

      Then do it via email.

      • +1

Not sure why this got negged?

A written notification of cancellation in an email should cover it?

I've done this with other insurances. Sometimes an AFCA report is required, and that takes 5 mins, vs on a phone for 2 hrs?
(I've got sketchy mobile reception..no chance of a sustained connection for 50 mins…as I report to AFCA).

They have to then pay AFCA. So why wouldn't they accept an email.

Also looks like a direct debit required..use a gift card with 19 days worth only on it?

  • Does this means we are not eligible for benefit with 12 months waiting period when transferring from another provider?

So churning health insurance every 12 months means we will never be able to claim benefit under those waiting period?

Bupa sometimes gives some rebate back if we dont claim a lot of benefit. Does other provider do this as well? I am thinking of churning out from bupa and maybe churn back in a year time if they always have offer like this.

    • They give rebates?! I had no idea. Is this automatic or do you have to ask for it?

      • Its automatic. It is not an official rebate. It is just random initiative that they give to customer to improve branding. We have received probably around 3-4 of them since covid and the amount can range from $80 to $200+

We paid $200+ per month for family package, so maybe in the grand scheme of things its not that much but still something.

        • All health insurers do this. I received money from defence health and Medibank too. I wouldn't say bupa are doing this out of the kindness of their heart.

    • Regards to waiting periods , my understanding is that if you've already served say 6 of the 12 months waiting period then that would carry over on your clearance certificate. So once you've done 12 months total you'd be right.

      • Good to hear, worth the 30 minutes effort to ask call center before churning then.

    • +1

So churning health insurance every 12 months means we will never be able to claim benefit under those waiting period?

Your waiting periods served are transferred to the new fund via the Transfer Certificate.

  • -1

Annoyed it doesn't work for existing bupa members.

    • +1

Why be annoyed? It's a new customer strategy. Change out, be a new customer elsewhere and come back to Bupa as a new customer.
It's the way these things work.

  • A question about churn dates.

Do you start your new policy the day after your last day of coverage of your current plan?

    • eg, policy ends 17/03/2024, new policy commences 18/03/2024. This ensures you have continuous coverage and you're not paying premiums with two insurers. Holding two concurrent policies may place you in breach of each fund's Fund Rules.

  • For my family, same cover, Bupa is way more expensive comparing to Medibank :(

    • Can always go bupa. Get points and weeks free then churn back

  • +1

    Strikezebra,
, I have the same confusion as you. I bought a hospital plus extras to commence from 22.3.24 given to understand that I am qualified for the “ 10weeksplus”. The problem is no info of such in my website account with them though I am now having a card from them, and the website account is in operation. I am confused by their Everyday Rewards and this 10weeksplus benefits accrued. I wrote to Bupa just now and hope can get a clear explanation from them. Wish me luck.

  • I had no idea private health insurance churn was a thing (and of course it is). Kinda wish I was on top of it sooner.

Little inconvenient that these deals require extra cover as well. I have my hospital cover (Bupa) and extra cover (QCHF) with different providers because QCHF had a better offering for their extras cover - I think they also recently changed their cover so my current cover is grandfathered.

Gonna have to look carefully before I start churning.

    • +1

If you click on the link you can see they also have a hospital only cover promotion (code 4WFHOSP) which gives 4 weeks free and requires no extras.

      • True! Thanks but seems like you don't get points bonus.

Not sure if worth the hassle to save 1 month fees

  • I currently have a junk family policy to reduce tax burden. I'm interested to hear from churners whether the churn game is worth playing i.e. could we end up paying the same amount for cover that does something for the same price?

    • +2

PHI churning is well worth the learning curve and effort. I've saved over 50% on my annual PHI costs.

    • Is there a tax advantage taking out a family policy over a single?

  • I see the Shopback links at the top of the deal - double checking that purchasing via shopback does not invalidate the BUPA offer?

    • +1

Via Shopback app: "Cashback offer not available in conjunction with any other Bupa new join offer."

  • +1

I probably know the answer, but just had to ask. If I am the primary for current Bupa insurance, cancel that, and take the primary in partner's name to take this offer, would it count towards 12 months wait time?

  • +1

Have never been able to afford PHI until now (39) where our family income has just ticked over the threshold. However we get slapped with the loading since we haven't had it for 8 years which keeps it unaffordable. If we didn't have loading I'd probably take this up :(
    Such a stupid policy.

    • Sounds fair

    • +1

Yup same boat, HCF still has better premium for us.Lower than others even if LHC is not added.

  • How is this better than NIB?

For example NIB silver hospital plus is $2k a year whereas BUPA Silver Advanced is like $2800 a year.. so esentiallly churn here to have the same price of cover with the discount?
    Am I missing something?

    • you don't stay with them for a whole year - take the benefits and move on. that's why it's called churning

    • Both NIB and Bupa are as bad as each other.

As stated below, the idea is to churn through offers, not to stay.

      • What's your favourite?

        • No favourites. This is a business transaction. I join whichever fund has the greatest percentage discount for the shortest required holding period (plus any free period).

  • +1

    Wow, great churn bonus.

Really don't like Bupa with a passion (as per most I am here to make money out of you instead of looking after you and your health) but this would sway me to change for 2 months!

Sadly I've prepaid my HF so I can stay on the old rates for as long as possible! (I prefer not for profit HFs if anyone asks)

    • +1

Compare your old rate to your new rate to see how much you lose by changing now.
Unused prepaid amount is fully refunded so your loss is only the increase.

    • Sadly I've prepaid my HF so I can stay on the old rates for as long as possible!

Get a refund for the prepayment and churn. You are doing yourself a financial disservice by staying.

  • Bronze Plus Simple Hospital + Core Extras is eligible? (couple) I will start on 20th April, pay for a month, get 6 weeks free plus 140K ER points and then cancel, plus reduces our MLS by around $580. Due to get teeth checked and cleaned etc….will use one of their Members First Ultimate providers to get it for free. Pity I just got new glasses recently, but they only cost me $188 anyway (3 pairs) so not too much damage

Overall, doing this we should be around $965 better off, not including the free dental checkups than not doing anything and paying the full MLS

  • +4

If applying for the BUPA offer, be sure to deselect 'recommended' products from the offer list - they hide many of them, including some of the cheaper options.

    • yes, I just noticed this

  • +1

if I have a start date of 20th April, and I get the 6 weeks free after the first 30 days of the policy, does that mean that if I pay monthly, it won't debit the next scheduled amount on the 20th May, and then if I cancel as soon as the 6 weeks free is up on (roughly) 1st July I won't get debited again? (as long as I add the above promo code) Just trying to understand how this works as I haven't had any health insurance since early 1990's lol.

    • +1

Spot-on. First payment comes out immediately to cover your first month, then no payments during the six weeks after that first month, then at the end of the free 6 weeks the next payment would come out.
Cancelling after 60 days (but before the free 6-week period concludes) means you'd receive the WW benefit without having to pay for anything other than the first month.

      • and Bupa lets you cancel at any time? (obv to get the max benefits it has to be cancelled as you said above)….just don't want to be caught having to have it for a min 6 months or something

        • You could almost be certain they'll be trying to "sell/market" you into retaining it when you phone to cancel, but essentially yes.

          • @Tenzin: I just looked up branches and there is one nearby. Am I better off going in to cancel there?

            • @souths123: No idea, my friend. Though I can't imagine the process would differ too much either way, other than perhaps wait times.

        • and Bupa lets you cancel at any time?

You can cancel any insurance policy at any time. It's your choice.

Read the Bupa Fund Rules https://www.bupa.com.au/-/media/dotcom/files/pdfs/bupa-fund-…

  • How does private health insurance churning work with avoiding the MLS if you are on $90k or more? For example I began earning over $90k in September and have had appropriate private health insurance coverage since, do I just need to ensure the coverage dates fall on the same day so I have private health insurance for 100% of the entire FY?

    • Each FY is from 1/7 to 30/6.
To achieve 100% coverage for this FY, you'd need to be covered for every single day since 1/7.
Everything is calculated on a FY basis, the ATO doesn't care when you start your $90k+ paying job. E.g. If you were unemployed for the month of July and August and only just started a 90k p.a. job in September, your annual income might not go over the 90k threshold (depending on any other income or if you received any bonus, etc). But if your were previously earning 80k p.a. and now earning 95k p.a., then you'd be over for the whole FY.

      • Hmm, does that mean even though I've had private health insurance for 10/12 months I'll still have to pay the full MLS as my annual income will be over $90k? If so I may as well cancel now and save the remaining months $$$

        • +1

You will have partial exemption to MLS. No point cancelling the cover.

        • It's all covered on the ATO site.

        • You'll have to pay MLS for the 2 months that you didn't have private health insurance. Nothing that you do now can change that. Having private health insurance from now on just means that your MLS amount won't go up even more.

  • is it worth to sign up and then cancel after points ? Not really after a PHI and never had one. not earning enough to offset the cost

    • Guess we need to do the cheapest quote to determine if it’s worth it

  • great. time to switch

  • Looking to get pregnancy cover for my wife, I am still under my family's cover so she will be single cover w basic extras

Medicare with the 6 Weeks Free seems to be cheaper still

    Medicare: 230/month + 6 Weeks Free +$200 GC Equivalent

    Bupa: 260/month + 6 Weeks Free + $350 GC Equivalent + 4 Weeks Free 2nd year

    • Aren’t 140,000 points equivalent to $700?

      • +1

single cover only gets you 70,000 points

        • Probably not with it then

    • Is it cheaper for the whole family to go on the same policy w pregnancy? And get the 140000 pts. I guess depends on ages of any kids but id think having 2 policies would be paying overs.

    • similar need - which package is the most economical that has pregnancy cover?

  • Thanks OP. Signed up. However, they computed my LHC loading wrongly, which should be the same as the previous insurer (Medibank). How to adjust?

    • +1

      Send them an email.

      Always keep it in writing.

    • +2

Same thing happened to me. I went on the chat with them and they said it will adjust once they receive the clearance certificate from my previous insurer.

Annoyed that they send out wrong information though. If they can calculate the correct amount for the quote they should use that in the policy statement as well.
