If you're in the market for a portable monitor this 14" one from ASUS ZSUS is really good value for just under A$90. Especially when it has 1440p resolution and 350cd/m² brightness. Hmmm… Was US$50.61 (~A$77.77) last time around. Hodl?

  • +1

Does this one have VESA mount holes?

    • +2

      Unfortunately not.

    • +4

Based on image from reviews, no.

    • +5

At this price you could just VHB tape a VESA mount on the back

    • It's too thin for VESA mount, you can get a monitor clamp instead.

  • +12

looks good but might wait for one with a built-in stand

  • +9

Poked around and found a lower resolution variant (14-inch 1920*1080) going for ~US$60 by the same seller.

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005535333467.html

Advantages are brighter screen (400cd/㎡) and comes with a magnetic leather case which doubles as a monitor stand. Could be worth the few extra dollars for some people.

    • Thanks for this - just ordered w promo code for $96.

    • Can this monitor be powered from a laptop/pc? Thanks

      • +1

The monitor requires 5V/1A, so a single USB C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode support will be enough to provide both video and power via a single cable.

        • Is it safe for a car windscreen mount?

Would be using this connected to a pixel 3a for gps purpose. Would this item be safe to leave on the windscreen WITHOUT THE COLD AIRCON HITING I (I have a tesla and I want something to be in the windscreen rather then close to the vent - don't want to use the built in media)

          • +1

@Clubbermga: No clue, but obstructing you vision with a 14 inch screen while driving doesn't sound like a good idea.

          • @Clubbermga:

Is it safe for a car windscreen mount?

            Obviously not - it's a 14" monitor.

It's not transparent - it'll block your view through the windscreen.

            • @Nom: Thanks. I am more interested to know if it will support the sun heat.

      • +2

Mine connects and can be powered by S23 Ultra so it should work. Battery discharge on the phone is high of course when doing this

        • Can you use a splitter and charge and send the data from the phone to the screen?

          • @Clubbermga: The screen has 2 usb c ports. You can use one to power it and the other connected to the phone.

You might need to include GST in the title as well

    • +31

I always do and I even include the actual exchange rate for people who think AliExpress' or PayPal's conversion is correct.

    • +13

Lol at out of all the members you chose to say this to.

      • No wonder I'm so agro lately

        • Clearly getting cranky

  • +14

I like this marketing photo. That's one tiny room.

  • -3

    350nits is borderline ok

    • +1

I bought an MSI portable monitor recently that was only 250nits. I read all the articles thinking maybe I made a mistake. I will admit that I didn't use it in the middle of a footy oval on a 40c degree day, but in the hotel room it was perfectly usable.

    • +2

Relying on youtube shills for (mis)information in the absence of critical thinking is not okay

  • +1

I have this monitor, AMA regarding this monitor.

    • How usable is it without the stand

      • +1

You would probably have to lean the monitor against something without the stand.

      • +3

Not very usable. You need to buy a tablet stand as the stand is very weak

    • Is the refresh rate really 60hz? I bought a portable monitor from Aliexpress a few years ago and the refresh rate is 30hz or less.

      • +5

Usbc cable the refresh rate is 60Hz. But with hdmi its often only 30Hz.

        • Is there a special usb c cable required for video transfer?

          • +1

            @boretentsu:

Is there a special usb c cable required for video transfer?

It comes with the required cable.

            • @bcarp: Lol I can't remember where I put it. Uh oh…

              • @boretentsu: You threw the box out didnt you? Its likely in there when you threw it out.

      • +2

Yes 60hz. Even if I downgrade the resolution

      • +2

Yes, I have it too and definitely 60hz over USB C.

    • Does this have a ZSUS badge or label on the actual screen, or is it just plain like the photos? (they often airbrush out brand and nameplates from their images on these sites).

      • +2

The brand name is in big letters on the back.

  • description says TFT, this is IPS?

    • +1

IPS. The marketing images say the same.

    • +2

TFT just means it is a thin film transistor LCD. IPS is a type of TFT LCD. So it's not incorrect, it just isn't the full descriptor.

  • +3

    2160 x 1440 pixels is not 1440p resolution, it's significantly lower. 1440p = 2560 x 1440 pixels.
Edit: turns out I'm wrong, apparently 1440p can include a whole range of resolutions:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1440p

So this monitor has more of a square-ish aspect ratio (15:10) when compared to a traditional monitor (16:9). The specs look decent, especially for the price.

    • +8

      a traditional monitor (16:9)

oh boy! I thought traditional monitor is 4:3 :D

      • +2

I’m old enough to remember when 14" CRTs were the standard monitor size for PCs

  • It would be good if these came with an inbuilt battery.

    • +9

With a built-in battery the price would likely jump up to $200 and beyond, and that is one extra point of failure you'd have to worry about. In which case I would rather prefer a battery-less monitor paired with an old powerbank…

      • +3

I tested mine on a power bank and it worked

        • +1

Can confirm this as well. Tested two days ago.

          • +5

@Dreamcast: Imagine if phones had replaceable batteries, that would be amazing.

            • +1

              @WatchNerd: The good old days….

              • +1

@Dreamcast: We'll just have to console ourselves with cheap Amazon powerbanks 🤣

            • +3

@WatchNerd: Or the future of the EU gets its way. User replaceable batteries are coming back.

    • Are there any portable monitors that come with in built battery?

      • +1

Yeah there's a few. Cheaper to get a small power bank from the Amazon deals.

        • Do you need a power bank with PD?

      • +3

If you plug this in via usb-c (e.g. with a laptop that supports DP over usb-c), then the laptop powers the display.

You can also use a powerbank.

    • I bought a tab S7 fe for $200, it can act as a wireless second monitor for windows. It's usable if not ideal due to latency.

My tab S8 Ultra is a bit bigger and can do the same. Doubles as a tablet or you can use it basically as a EMR enabled display like a hi end Wacom tablet.

      • +1

        How do you do this?

        • +1

I just set this up on my s6 lite to windows laptop yesterday as a test. Process might be the same? (Got the basic steps from reddit):

On your tablet, in settings, search for "Smart View" and open it.
          Click "About Smart View"
Tap on the smart view logo about 5 times until it asks for the password
          enter the password #00rtsp00

Then allow labs and second screen

On your windows device, press the shortcut for the connect window (windows key+K) and your tablet should show up.

      • That was my plan but work laptop locked down and doesn't work with galaxy tab as 2nd monitor through wireless nor usb-c

    • The application for these is usually when travelling or working outside a normal environment, but still with access to power. I'm glad mine doesn't have one, means it's extremely thin and light

  • +1

Weird aspect ratio. Not a typical 2560x1440p rectangle

    • +2

It's a very similar size to a 14" macbook pro screen - which makes it a really good companion screen when working remotely.

  • +2

That's a very good price, though it's a little small for such high res

  • The challenge is to find a case.

    • What for? You just pop it on your desk under your existing proper monitor, it ends up pretty great down there just behind keyboard

      • I guess for the sake of portability? It is being advertised as a portable monitor afterall, but monitor screens with no protective casing can be rather easily damaged in transit.

        • Just like laptops. You buy them bags to carry them portable monitor in.

      • I bought this initially when it was first advertised as having a folding case, as I use it for university exams and studying when not home. The lack of suitable cases and needing a laptop sleeve that doesn't protect the panel well is disappointing. At least it is now advertised correctly.

  • Is there a usb c hub that I can connect this screen to (via usb c) and then connect the usb c hub to the laptop?

  • what do you guys use this for?

    • I have a 16"one, use it as a second monitor for work at home. Can't think for a real use that is not work related

    • I have a 14" one that is connected to my laptop.

You can bring it anywhere as it is very light.

    • I spend time at work 'on the floor' rather than at my desk, this is useful as I have access to power but there is no additional screens. Mine is also a touch screen, which my laptop is not, which can be useful when showing other people some things.

    • My desk is space limited. So I have to use mini monitors. That said the image is quite crisp to my eyes

    • I use mine for completing assignments at Uni after work as well as in university exams. It is extremely handy.

  • +3

The folding stand that it comes with is rubbish. I have this monitor & carry it between three offices, but I've 3D printed a stand to leave in each office. At this price, I'll probably get two more monitors to save having to carry this back & forth.

    • The trouble is, if you're leaving it there, wouldn't you have been better just getting a second hand screen that would have been brighter and better anyway?

      • That's a pretty good point actually, second hand / refurbished screens are generally available for as low as $80 ~ $90 anyway. Only downside is their size factor - they are usually pretty big at 20+ inches and you might not have enough desk space for multiple large monitors.

        • Yes, it's a size thing. My offices are shared spaced. My stuff gets packed away in a set of drawers at the end of the day & someone else uses the desk the next day. Some people need computers on the desk, some don't… depends on what that person is doing. Some use laptops, nobody else wants the monitor sitting there.

        • That's a pretty good point actually, second hand / refurbished screens are generally available for as low as $80 ~ $90 anyway.

Just on the off-chance I could find something like this a bit smaller than 20 inches, I tried to find second hand/refurbished screens with a similar resolution to the one listed above. I could not find anything higher than 1080p i this price range. Do you have a source for the used/refurbished desktop screens?

          • @bcarp: Uh, less than 20 inches second hand / refurbished and 1440p at $80 to $90? I doubt anything like that exists at this current moment. You'd have to try your luck on ebay or Facebook marketplace.

If you're willing to accept 20+ inches @ 1080p, however, here's a few options to consider.

            • @anonym: or this new LG still available for low-mid $90s depending on what discount stacking is available to you via ebay

              • @battler: Thanks for the tips. I find 1080 too low a resolution, so looks like this is once again the monitor for me.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Bought one. Paid $88 after conversion Mastercard. Been wanting to use 3 screens WFH (with 2 ext monitor) but laptop keyboard is in the way (small desk) this will be perfect. Been using 10.5" tablet but 14" will be just nice. Preferably 16" but for $88 pretty good.
