Wow best price yet. This is the one I own. If anyone has questions just let me know..
It's probably unbeatable at this price point.

    • How does this compare to the Retroid Pocket 2+?

Basically I can play up to ps1/dreamcast (it really struggles with N64 though). I assume this would be a side-grade.

      • If the RGB30 can do PS1/Dreamcast, I'm sure this can handle it too.

      • Similar platform usage from the sound of it. Dreamcast is ok. N64 struggles and PSP some games good some not so good

        • Can it play Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions?

    • Any issues with the software? Only bad thing i’ve heard about it.

Also was mainly thinking of getting one for travel, so was wondering what the battery life is like?

      Thanks for the help!

      • +2

Battery is pretty decent around 4-8 hrs depending on game.
Software is annoying in the sense that I lose my save data every single time I update firmware despite moving all my save files. So I'm just sticking to the one software at least until custom firmware is optimized for this console. The os to use is completely ok though

      • -1

Without decent custom firmware support, I wouldn't touch a Anbernic device.

      • +2

work is in progress here. there is a limited version of batocera available

        https://github.com/rg35xx-cfw/rg35xx-cfw.github.io/releases

update: also a very new one called MuOS apparently!

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF551LBCD1g

    • does it have third party firmware to make it even better? like onion/garlic OS

      • From what I've read some stuff hasn't been made open source so custom firmware support is lacking.

      • This model released pretty recently so third party firmware is there, but in early stages. garlic i believe is being worked on but nothing just yet. the ones i see mentioned alot are batocera and muOS.

    • +4

Ive been trying to get into emulation for a year or so, honestly just to play pokemon lol. Every time i just get overwelmed with the different emulators/consols/ROM downloads and end up doing nothing.

Will buying this make it easier for me? Im so ignorant - forgive me.

      • +3

This will do it, or any of the regularly posted retro handhelds on OzB.
You just need to find the game roms - googling 'tiny best set go' will get you started.

If you want to browse some reviews or setup guides to see what's on offer, have a look at retrogamecorps.com
There are a lot of super cheap AliExpress handhelds which are junk.

      • What platform do you want to Pokemon on?

If it's a 4:3/1:1 screen system like Game boy, Gameboy Colour, SNES etc or you want NDS then look at the Rgb30 because of its 1:1 screen.

Other systems with 16:9 or 3:2 this would be a better option.

Both will play up to N64. Software much more mature on the Rgb30.

      • Easier just choose the platform using the retro arch and find the one you want

    • +1

does it come with games, or you have to load games yourself?

      • +5

        Don’t ask that here.

If it has games it will be illegal and shouldn’t be posted here.

Just assume there isn’t games included and source your own. Even if roms were included, they’re normally shity dumps and poorly organised so you’ll want to get your own collection anyway.

And no, it can’t be discussed where to source roms from on OzBargain.

      • +3

Y…e…s for inclusive around 2500 actually on 64gb.
I bought this as my PSP battery is dead and won't turn on. So I bought it to play the games I own. Probably wasn't the best decision for PSP. Ghost of Sparta does not run

    • How do you play 2 player on it? Do you need a second unit?

      • +1

Yeah you will need a second Unit.

        • And both be on the same wifi.

OR USB C OTG for a second controller on a single device (if this particular device supports that).

    • Are you running stock or GarlicOS? Have you tested 2.0 Beta?

      • +1

Running the 30th of Jan stock firmware… Right now it's good enough.
No real incentive to upgrade to a beta firmware. If it gets an official release I might consider. But stock firmware is ok if you start from 30th of Jan onwards. All these would have the February update.
They run all the games and is quite functional

    • Does it run Doom?

      • I can't 100% not having this device, but I'd suggest it does.

  • i’m after a handheld with emulations, do they make one with a bigger / higher rear screen as i wear glasses or that strains the cpu ?

    • Bigger quality screen get the Anbernic RG556 5.5 inch OLED screen, but it's almost $300.

      • +1

At that point could consider the og steam deck which is about $650 when on sale, stock looks to be getting cleared out.

Pretty sure we'll see a middle ground offering at some point.

        • +1

This comes up a lot in the Sbcgaming subreddit. The Steam Deck is not a competitor to something like an RG556, though I wish it was. It is simply too big.

An RG556 being roughly Switch Lite sized is still small enough that you can have it float around a bag and not notice it. The Deck does not fit that description, which is a shame as I'd have one if it did.

        • +3

That's a pretty steep jump in price to go from $300 to $650

      • Retroid 4($250) or 4 Pro($300) is also a good option if OLED doesn't matter. 4.7" screen.

        • And the next bracket up would be the Odin 2, which has a 6" screen and comes with Snapdragon 8Gen2 CPU and a bigger battery (8000mAh).

Price is about double Retroid though.

  • +2

Great price for a nice device

  • +2

Can't decide between this or the RGB30. The rg35xxh has better build quality and no charging qwerks….but the screen on the rgb30 is awesome.

Just FYI, botacera v40 works pretty well as a custom firmware from what I have read on Reddit.

    • Love my RGB30, and ArkOS is better. RGB30 is also better looked after in ArkOS compared to R36S for example, (but kind of useless comparison to this Anbernic device).

My RGB30 has decent build quality.

I soldered on a rumble motor and it's pretty cool.

    • Rgb30 here for GB, GB colour, NES, SNES games. Screen is fantastic for these ratios. Had zero issues with mine. I fact I have an Anbernic 35xx, R36s and the Rgb30 and from a quality perspective the only issue I've had is with the 35xx which was DoA.

  • Can you play 2 player with another device on any of these?

    • With some games you can use Retroarch Netplay.

  • +5

Ive had this model for a couple of months now.

Batocera is up to v40 (although im staying with v39 for now). Definitely adds a lot over the stock OS. Would def recommend
Im loving Dreamcast. Most PSX / PSP / N64 play pretty well, but you need to be willing to tinker a bit to choose the best emulators and settings for some games. Everything below plays fine (SNES, Gameboys, etc).

My biggest gripe is the boot time on Batocera, but its a known issue theyre working on.

There is plenty of help on the sub reddits if you're looking to tweak it

    • Ok so I installed batocera to see what the hype is.. would much rather stick firmware… Stock just works all these custom stuff add prettiness but no practicality

  • +2

I've had one for a few weeks now. New SD cards and Batocera v40 make the device really great. Battery life is very impressive. Great little portable device.

    • what do you mean new SD card?

      • +1

The SD cards that come with all anbernic devices are poor quality and lead to random issues, then eventually fail.

        • is it easy to swap it out? ie do i need to open the case?

          • +3

            @SS625: Standard push in..out sd-card slots

  • Anyone has multiplayer experiences under the same wifi ?

  • Been looking at all these retro hand held for a while, this be good for first device? I wanted the Horizontal gameplay

    • +1

      Yes.

In this price range, check out the Powkiddy RGB30 and the Trimui Smart Pro as well.

  • Showing up as $70.95 AUD….am I missing something? Not a huge Aliexpress shopper.

    • thats cheaper than poster?

      • +1

        First time buyer maybe

    • +1

GST applies in cart. making it around $80

  • Tempting, but I already have an RG35XX, R36S, RGB30 and Analogue Pocket that I hardly use.

I don't think this brings much to the table that I don't already have, does it?

    • im looking to get my first one, which one do you recommend ? the RGB30 and R36S looks pretty good

      • +1

R36S has great performance and screen but I didn't like the ergonomics.

If you plan to play a lot of PS1, reaching the shoulder buttons is, for me, quite painful.

The RGB30 looks great but I didn't want to fork out the extra $20-30.

        • how about this one listed? any good?

im thinking more in the $50 range thou

      • +1

R36S too hard for shoulder buttons. If not playing PSX games, doesn't matter.

I prefer my RGB30, but again depends on what systems you're likely to play with the 1:1 screen ratio.

      • The RGB30 is great, but a little pricey. The R36S is a great budget handheld if you can get it for $60. I was really impressed with mine. The screen is great with no backlight bleed, it has analog sticks and pretty decent performance, it'll also play native Pico-8. The only downside is that it has no built in wifi, so you need to use a USB wifi adapter

    • I don't think this brings much to the table that I don't already have, does it?

It is new! And slightly different! A must buy for such a collector as yourself…

      • Haha yeah, well there is that and the price is right, but I think I'll resist this time around. I already got sucked into buying a Lenovo tablet from aliexpress the other day :)

    • I don't think so. The RGB30 is very similar.

I got rid of my r36s. I didn't like the ergonomics.

    • +1

      No Miyoo Mini plus?

  • The other day I was thinking I really need a horizontal handheld to compliment my Miyoo Mini Plus. Then I was playing the Switch OLED and thought that form factor was too small screen wise. So now that pretty much rules me out of all the cheap horizontals lol

    • I really need a horizontal handheld to compliment my Miyoo Mini Plus

Miyoo A30, which is a horizontal Miyoo will be released in April

      • Looks cool but appears the specs won't be much higher to do newer emulation.

        Screen appears tiny!

        • Yep, not much info on the Miyoo A30, but most likely the same as the Miyoo Mini Plus.

If you want a decent horizontal handheld, then I suggest the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro or the Odin 2 (expensive).

          • @RichardL: Yeah my comment below is that I am waiting for a price drop on that!

  • Anyone running emulation on a PS Vita? I wonder how this compares.

    • +1

The Vita can play PSP and Vita perfectly. This struggles with PSP and can't play Vita.

However, the Vita's price on eBay has skyrocketed recently.

    • +1

I jailbreaked my Vita a few years ago and it took a lot of effort to get everything up and running. Installing Retroarch and Adrenalin and configuring everything (especially Retroarch) was very tedious but kinda worth it in the end. To be fair, most of my favourite games were either from the NES or SNES and some arcade games so it didn't really push the Vita very hard like some N64 or PS1 games; but it was fun to see Super Mario World or Street Fighter II variants (arcade or MAME version) running in a small handheld.

Now it looks like there is a much easier and streamlined way to jailbreak the Vita; will need to give that a go if I can find the time.

These Anbernic or Retroid Pocket handhelds are perfect for people who want to play old games but don't have the time or the inclination to jailbreak devices like the Vita; they just need to figure out where to source the ROMS and how to upload it to the handhelds.

      • +3

The new method is easy. When I say easy, I mean anyone can do it. Done through the Web browser on the vita.

Give it a go, you'll be impressed!

      • +2

What Dreamcast says - the new method to jb vita is amazing - look up a web address, push a few buttons and it's done. Plus an amazing "storefront" where you can browse available titles and dl straight to the vita - fantastic. Plus a huge backlog of games, so I'm using my vita now more than when I bought it new

        • Sounds great tbh.

I jail broke it the old method years ago.

Do I need to restore back to factory and then do the jailbreak?

          • +1

@Circly: Probably safer to go back to factory and have latest firmware - look up "retro game corps ps vita" for a guide

  • What's the cheapest handheld for gamepass streaming? Would need WiFi and Android or is there a way to run on Linux through a browser

    • +1

      Abxylute.

Or mobile phone with controller accessory.

  • Can this do N64 emulation? if not, what's a good handheld for N64 emulation?

    • +3

This can but struggles with the more demanding titles.

Alternatively, the Retroid Pocket 3+ can.

      • ok cool, will check out the Pocket 3+

    • Anbernic RG405M

  • I thought the analog sticks on this thing are crap, as in, they snap to directions. So the analog sticks are not a big seller. Outside of the analog sticks, apparently everything else is fantastic for the price. 4:3 at 640 x 480 screen is nice for retro gaming.

    • I wonder is this can be changed with a software update or if some type of hardware modification is necessary.

      • It definitely is software based, I just don't know if it can be changed.

  • how will this play NDS games with the dual screen?
Looks really tempting as I burnt hours on the recent Drastic NDS enulator

seems like it can focus on one screen or squish both onto the screen

    • +1

This will run most DS games very poorly. Even an old Android phone running Drastic would be better.

Just so you don't waste money thinking it's an upgrade.

If all you want is DS you'd be much better of getting the real thing of Marketplace.

      • +3

Had no issues running DS performance wise. Practicality wise as long as the game isn't dual screen or stylus dependent, all good.

  • This looks like a great deal.

However, I am now over 40 and my eyesight is, well, still not bad, but worse than it was, I do have issues if things are too small.

Any older people like me that can comment whether the screen size is big enough?

  • RG35XX H or plus is a better product?

    • +1

      Same thing.

      H is horizontal with thumbsticks.

Plus is vertical like a gameboy.

  • +1

Thanks for this. I've been deliberating about purchasing one of these the past week or so, can't pass up at this price :)

  • Don't forget ShopBack. I got $5.02 on this deal.
