Soniq B100 Multi-Region Blu-Ray Player - $63.20 with Free Shipping from JB

160

This is part of JB's current 20% off DVD/BD players but felt this model was of particular importance to Ozbargainers due to us often sourcing our movies/docos from a galaxy far far away. A fairly no-frills multi-region BD player at a no-frills price. I'm not sure when this deal will end.

You can set it to region free for all DVDs (set to region 0) but you have to change the bluray region setting whenever you want to watch a bluray from a different region. Also, the remote is apparently a little bit crap, but surely you have a cheapie Harmony remote lying around from a previous deal that you can use.

Region unlocking info from: http://www.multi-region.net/soniq_b100

To multiregion DVD playback
1. Press the Open\Close button on the remote.
2. Press the Setup button on the remote.
3. Press 8, 5, 2, 0 on the remote.
4. A menu will appear. Change the setting that reads 4 to 0.
5. The player is now DVD Region Unlocked.

To change the BluRay Region
NOTE: This player can support foreign region BluRays, however the region has to be changed on a case by case basis.
1. Press the Open\Close button on the remote.
2. Press the Setup button on the remote.
3. Press 8, 5, 2, 0 on the remote.
4. A menu will appear. Scroll to the option that reads 2.
5. Change it to 1 for Region A BluRays, change it to 2 for Region B BluRays and change it to 4 for Region C BluRays.

  • looks good

  • Maybe I should revoke my plus, family friends experience with this brand has been rather shoddy. I think paying more with a peace if mind is more beneficially. Of course this going by anecdotal evidence.

experience with this brand has been rather shoddy

Soniq is not a manufacturer, but an importer brand, so its better to judge each model on its merits.
I have a different model Soniq which has been good, but could be from a different factory, completely different chip and software. I expect they are all reference designs.

I have heard very few bad things about this particular unit, ChickenAdobo.

  • I bought Kogan's basic blu-ray player. Region free blu-ray, out of the box, with no switching on a case by case basis required. I've played Region A and B one after the other.

    • +1

      Was it $63?

    • Fair enough. I've removed that line about all multi-region players needing switching. When you factor in shipping, the Kogan player is almost exactly twice the price of this Soniq player. I can deal with the slight inconvenience for that kind of saving.

  • Good price, just wondering what's the firmware situation on these? One of the pains about Blu-ray is new discs refusing to work with old firmware, does Soniq have a good reputation for being up to date on this?

Not Reccomended! at all ive been through two of these models the first lasted 4 months and the replacement 3 after that i gave up and threw it in the Bin… they have a pretty common fault in that after a few months of use they go through a continous boot cycle until they fail and then become oversized paperweights.. spend your $60 on say a similar specced phillips ect that frequently go on sale for the same price.. thats what i did and its now lasted quite a while without any faults

I see. If my family friends have bad experience with this brand I shouldn't expect any better. I was right after all on my revoking part. Should be worthy of negs (defective product) as per guideline.

      • +1

It is not an inherently defective product. There are plenty of people that have used this item with no problems. Have a search of the Whirlpool forums. In any case, I have bought this item. If any issues arise, I will get my money back and put the fairly paltry sum of $60 towards a different player. As it stands, at this price, I'm willing to buy it.

You're obviously still hurt about being negged in the Wii deal. I would rather you refrained from commenting in my posts, but obviously I can't stop that.

Well I rather pay more for a better well known brand. Dealing with defective product is PITA and shouldn't have the user chasing on refund etc. TIME IS MONEY.

People are better off using that extra time watching more movies, not chasing their refund because of defective product. People looking at this deal be wary before buying.

        • Thanks, crayner :)

ChickenAdobo: I will be using the extra money I saved buying this cheap player to buy more movies.

        • -1

Well clearly someone beg to differ.

        • I don't even know what you mean by that.
Anyway, I won't be replying to any more of your comments, ChickenAdobo. There is a small handful of Ozbargain users that frustrate me with everything that they say and you have joined that club. I see no point in dealing with you any longer. Thanks for your contribution.

        • -5

Well glad to be in that club, you can watch me type happily away trying to invoke even a smallest flaw on every deal you post. Going to stick your backside for a long time buddy :)

Oh go get your neggers crews ready too.

Another region free option is the Laser BD1000, looks as though you may have to manually change BD regions though,
however; it comes with a three year warranty (unlike Kogan's one year period) and can be had for $79 from The Good Guys.

    http://www.laserco.net/products/audio-visual/dvd-players/BLU…

Edit: Apparently the Soniq BD100 comes with a three year warranty as well, clearly the best option!

    • I take that back, the Soniq B100 only comes with a one year warranty.
I just bought one from JB HiFi Hobart, I don't believe they had much stock (I.E: less than 5).

  • +2

I own one. It works fine but the remote is not responsive at times.

  • had one for a while. not a bad unit… but i havent used it much either….remote is pretty crap….
bought mine for $99 when other brands were double that….
now that you can get brand name blueray player for around $100 i dont think this unit is worth $70…..

    • -1

      Good thing it's $63.20!

  • Get the Laser BD1000 from Good Guys for $79 (or $76.20 if paying cash) instead. That's normal price! Can vouch for it working well, and it's region free for Blu Ray and DVD. 3 year warranty also.

EDIT: I see someone else mentioned this too, so credit where it's due!

Solid player for this price. As others have said the remote can be a bit shitty. Have to press power & eject 3-4 times before it actually registers but I've had no problems with it otherwise.
