Just noticed the Mac version of the WD 2TB portable external drive is quite cheap (confirmed by camel). It seems this drive is no different to the normal black version except pre-formatted as Mac, but still posting if someone is interested.

NOTE: You sometimes need to go to "More Buying Choices" click 'Add to Cart' for the Amazon.com seller (as they post to AU).

Seems the US to AU postage is higher than usual at $17 or maybe it is just for this particular drive.

  • Got it! $174.75 delivered using Amazon currency converter. Thanks OP!

Never ever use amazon currency convertor, always pay in USD.

      EDIT: what xthepoet said below.

      • Ok, thanks!

        • Yeh I used my 28 degrees card and chose USD, ended up charging to my card at $167AUD. Bargain.

Bought one and paid in USD as I noticed that the Amazon currency converter rate is not so great (1USD = 1.0064AUD vs market rate 1USD = 0.9668AUD). If your credit card offers a better exchange rate than amazon (incl fees), just click the "Switch Currency" button to pay in USD and save a few dollars.

  • Can this be used with a PC as well as mac? Is it only the way the drive is formatted that makes it different form the regular my passport?

    • Yes x2! :)

      • thanks. im still holding out for one at ~$150 before i buy.

why do they call it for MAC?

    • +1

preformatted for MAC, but it does not come with firewire or thunderbolt :/

It's a gimmick. People who use mac are more likely to be uneducated about technology (eg. thinking that adobe reader is such a cool mac product) and thus fall for this gimmick rather than buying a cheaper hard drive from another brand which is perfectly capable of being used on a mac computer.

Can be reformatted for PC use but that "for mac" sign is a deal breaker.

  • Just bought a new macbook and was looking around for an external hard drive. This fits the bill perfectly! 2TB, USB3 and pre formatted to HFS+, all for a great price. Sold.

  • Aussie prices are getting to the point where the 3yrs of warranty may well be worth something. $220 is the lowest I've seen. Or $200 sans GST either of which are close to the $175 here.

Starting to make me wish I hadn't gone to Amazon when these were avail for <$150.

    Not completely but partially.

Further to comments above by IndecentExposure & m82 - As a long term Mac user I'm dismayed to see that some Mac users are still getting ripped off by assuming that they need to buy a drive specifically for a Mac. As if Apple hasn't already got its greedy claws into us! (Then again, maybe that's why. We're seen to be easy marks, used to paying far too much for our IT gear) ANY drive will work - reformatting to HFS+ isn't rocket science, and only takes a few seconds. Unless it has a Firewire or Thunderbolt (?????) port, there's absolutely NO reason to buy a so-called Mac version drive. Apart from formatting, it's no different from the usually much cheaper PC drive. Don't waste your hard-earned.

I know that some mac users may be conned into buying this because it says "for mac", but that's not the reason I ordered it. I needed a new external portable hard drive, this was cheaper than the normal wd 2tb hard drive. I missed out on the last sale on the standard black one. This was one was cheaper, pre formatted to HFS (not that it's hard to reformat it, like you said), and it matches my macbook style nicely. All good reasons why it is a decent deal for anyone currently in the market for a 2TB portable hard drive, specifically mac users.

I agree, I ask the store attendants at times at Myer, DJ, etc and listen to them BS me about, how the mac formatted drives are better for the macs etc. I see a lot of older folk get ripped off all the time, then again some look wealthy, so in a way it's better they prop up the profits so us ozbargainers can pay less.

  • Any luck price matching this locally?

  • Get this or the good guys one? Wouldn't "For Mac" have the chicks tearing off their clothes at the site of it?
