  • Is this the best machine you can get for around this price? Anything worth looking at in the $200 range?

    • +5

I would say yes, the build quality & features are definitely worth it over anything around $200.

As devisticshash said below - it's pretty much the Breville barista express without the built in grinder which is a good thing in my opinion.

Great machine, and not too big. My last one lasted 6 years (used twice a day). Apparently, they are still the same make as before. This is a big step up from the basic models in terms of feel.

  • no way this machine was $900

  • just want to confirm this is "wife proof"

    1. grind beans (have to do it separately as this machine doesn't have any inbuilt)
    2. fill portafilter
    3. put portafilter in the machine
    4. push button?
    • +1

As long as the grind is good and tamped etc then its pretty wife proof.

Just then getting a nice milk consistancy if are making a latte… if its just espresso shots then simple.

The tricky part is the grind/tamp

    • In my experience:
1&2: make sure the grinder has an automatic setting for a specific amount/time. They will still state that the portafilter has too much/not enough/didn't grind properly. You'll also be using the light and slightly plastic tamp on this 54mm portafilter that they might press sideways.
3&4: yep this is foolproof. Unless the grinder malfunctioned and they accidentally tried to tamp two doubleshots down (it's happened before).

All in all, good machine (but the "barista impress" and full-auto machines they sell for a LOT more fix these problems)

Don't forget to redeem Breville's promotion of gift with purchase and $400 cash back on beanz subscription.

    • Will the real MVP please stand up

    • Had a quick look through the T&C but can't see any particular restriction on what "2 free bags" means. Are we talking 250g or 1kg? If 1kg that would be great.

You mention gift with purchase, but it looks like the only Breville promo on at the moment is the 2 free bags and cashback on Beanz subscription. Anything else available?

      • It’s 2x 250g bags

I've used this machine for about 4 months now. This machine is pretty much the Breville barista express without the built in grinder. It has the same thermal block system and accessories. If you buy the infuser you get 15% off any Baratza or Breville grinder via JB-HI-FI. As a suggestion, enthusiasts believe that the grinder is the most influential factor to your espresso. So pairing the infuser up with the the Baratza encore ESP is better than the Breville barista express on its own.
The infuser is great but because it uses an older thermal block system compared to the bambino with a thermal jet system, it takes longer to heat up and steam milk. This is fine for a beginner because it gives you a greater window to practise your milk texturing. Looking back I'd go with the bambino plus, but this machine is one of the best value espresso machines out there and is hard to disappoint beginners with how easy it is to use.

I have this exact setup and it is perfect for beginning to tumble down the espresso rabbit hole.

Like other famous OzBargain addictions such as watches, eneloops and Knipex tools, you will soon find yourself purchasing an inordinate amount of bargain beans, obtaining accessories from AliExpress, watching James Hoffman and Lance Hedrick obsessively and becoming weirdly okay with flannel and facial hair.

Before you know it, you will be looking at r/espresso and dreaming of setups that cost half as much as a small car…

I have this, and have used it twice a day at least for 4 years. This thing does very well for the price. Anyone who says longer heating time is honestly talking about time you were going to waste anyway. The machine takes about a minute to heat up for me, and I always run before extracting to heat up further. The steam wand takes about 10seconds to work, which is absolutely reasonable. It's not the strongest steam wand, but it definitely serves its purpose with smooth texturing with the right angle.

For the price it's a solid machine!

  • I have the Barista Express due to bench space but would have preferred this. Both are great machines for the price bar the slow milk steaming. I would’t buy anything else in this price bracket. Should come with pressurised baskets so tamp and grind won’t be an issue. That said, I do prefer using the non-pressurised basket but use a calibrated tamp to take out the guesswork. This is a great option if paired with a decent grinder.

  • I just ordered the Breville Bambino Plus from DJs for $499. Would this be a better option?

    • Curious to know but it seems both are pretty similar.

    • Stick with the Bambino Plus imo

    • Bambino plus is better than the Infuser in both value and technology.

    • This one is easier to dial in due to the pressure gauge.

Also have this machine, although i neglect the care(don't clean as much as i should) hasn't missed a beat and would buy one again!

  • +1

I've got one of these, paired with the Breville Grinder Pro, and it's been going strong for 4 years making 3-5 cups a day. Wouldn't trade it for anything around the same price point. Considering picking this up as a spare.

  • This is normal RRP. Do not believe the super inflated price.

  • I would add a bit more and buy the barista pro (when on sale).

    • Better machine yes but close to twice the price on sale so more than a bit

      • Ah i probably bought a long time ago when the price was arnd $570. And dun need to buy separate grinder.

        • I agree it’s still probably worth it over this as the barista pro grinder now has Baratza burrs if someone wanted an all in one solution.

          • @antkappa: Ah so the pro is actually upgraded in the newer version? What's Baratza btw? Thanks

            • @Bargain-er: They are a coffee grinder manufacturer and yes I think it was updated in the past 6 months with the new burrs.

              • @antkappa: Ah nice. Thanks. The only downside of the pro is no pressure bar indicator. Otherwise it s perfect 👌

              • @antkappa:

                new burrs

Anyone know if these might be backward compatible with the BCG820?
