@ldd-mn: Mac is better battery life, i believe it is also better for ai ml.
Overall mac is just a better package. Value last longer, i dont need to be too worried if the price is a bargain or not, if buying windows, today feels like a deal, tomorrow it suddenly drop so much more. Windows so much harder to sell. Battery quality seems to be worse also, maybe.
Unified ram is also better and faster than normal ram. The ssd also faster than nvme from all other laptops.
The display maybe better than oled or the same.
Then thunderbolt 4, basically i can charge from 4 different ways.
Finally the fastest processor in the world. much faster than any intel or amd. Plus I haven’t heard any complaints of overheating from anyone. How the heck do they achieve this?

@Frankensnore: My comment was made with the assumption that you were going to be using it as a desktop replacement, so I was talking about getting a desktop instead. I do agree with your points though. "Finally the fastest processor in the world" - in a laptop, sure. It's ARM, so it's generally going to run cooler.
@Frankensnore: Only Apple Silicon Macs currently retain reasonable value. Intel Macs, that's a totally different story.
While I get the appeal of Macbook Pros, some of the points mentioned were not quite right:
- Unified RAM has pros and cons. Apple's marketing spin on bandwidth can trick people (since its calculation does depends on total RAM). Furthermore, a high end PC graphics card VRAM is still faster. RAM is still RAM, if the GPU portion has to use 8GB RAM, you are still left with 24GB RAM. Gaming consoles use unified RAM (and have been doing that for ages) - cost saving.
- If you get a $3000+ PC laptop, the NVMe SSD would also be PCIe gen 4 x4. With 1TB PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD, it doesn't matter whether it is Apple or PC, you are not going to get the best performance (those SSDs are optimised for 2TB).
- Thunderbolt 4 doesn't require PD 3.1. Furthermore, unless you purchase the 240W USB-C 2m ($49) cable, you cannot go above 100W. That cable is USB 2.0. MagSafe is a better option, but there is only 1 Magsafe port on the laptop.
- Thunderbolt 4 improvement over Thunderbolt 3 is disappointing. It is still PCIe gen 3 x4.
- M2 Max is not the fastest processor in the world. In Apple camp, there are M3 Max and M2 Ultra.
- With M2 Max, you need to get the 16 inch model so let's not sugarcoat this and overhype M2 Max (14 inch MBP with that CPU would thermal throttle under load).
I have a 16 inch Apple Silicon Macbook Pro. The SSD is okay (I am used to flagship PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs on PCs which are still faster than Mac's SSD). If you get low end Macbook Pros, especially M2 and M2 Pro, you could get subpar SSD performance due to single NAND flash chip setup.
That notch, while we get used to it quickly, is still annoying. You basically need to start hiding icons on the top right hand side after using the MBP for a while.

It just feel really fast and smooth though. I got similarly spec windows desktop. Idk why but it seems mac is much much more responsive.
@netsurfer: Hi, I'm just wondering if you're aware, you can make the notch go away by setting the screen resolution. (Yes, it removes the real estate at the top, reverting to a 16:10 ratio. But it solves the disappearing menubar icon problem.)

I bought a Lenovo i5 with 40gb ram and 1tb HDD for $1500 a year or so ago. Is with 2 and half times better?

The ram is different. Unified memory in mac utilise the whole ram in full 100%. Windows probably only use 16gb, except very specific rare scenarios

The trackpad, idk how mac did it but for decades none can come close. Magic trackpad is known to be the best mouse in the world.

@Frankensnore: If you are picking M2 Max Macbook Pro, then you need to pick an equivalent PC laptop. So many fanboy statements:
- It is a load of misinformation about RAM utilisation. If you only open Chrome with 1 tab, there is no way Apple M2 Max uses entire 32GB. If so, then there is a huge memory leak.
- Windows laptop has no issue using 100% of RAM. When M2 Max uses up 100% of the RAM and that's still not enough, you will feel how slow it can be. I have Apple Silicon Macs, when the RAM is insufficient, it is really slow.
- MagSafe is patented. Before teasing Windows users, why the heck did Apple remove it for Macbook Pro 2016 to 2019?
- Resale value, why don't you buy my Intel based Macbook Pros at 50% of the price I paid for?
- SSD… totally rubbish. Windows have faster SSDs.
- On entry level M2 Macbook Pros, the SSD speed is a joke. The $5 Centrecom 256GB SSDs (they took them out of laptops coz they are too small) is 1.5+ times faster that entry model.
- Intel is playing the throwing more cores into the CPU trick, so with the recent laptops, it has more cores.
If your M2 Max SSD is 2x faster, then show us a benchmark screenshot that's 2X faster than this PC SSD. By the way, that's NOT my fastest PC SSD.

Officeworks did a clearance of M2 Mac Mini for less than $500 last year. This M2 Max Macbook Pro is the entry model. People I know who own M2 Max devices all opted for 64GB and 2TB SSDs. Let's not forget this is Apple we are talking about. Apple is great for not putting in enough on the entry model to entice people to buy expensive upgrades.

@Frankensnore: The discounted M2 Max certainly is appealing. However, Apple did handicap M3 Pro to avoid it eating into M2 Max's market. Raw CPU performance, it comes too close to M2 Max. Sure, the GPU side, M2 Max beats it hands down.
Things get complicated with AI, which annoyingly, even M3, in certain AI benchmarks, excels over M2 Max. Sure, with more RAM, M2 Max still has a big advantage. Then, there is AV1 encoding, but I guess M2 Max is powerful enough even without that hardware accelerated, it is not going to be too slow. However, bear in mind, AV1 is one where GPU can really flex its muscle when accelerated. Also, do factor in that, back in Feb - March, people could get up to $750 off (though $240 is Apple gift card and ~$200-$250 is cashrewards etc…) via Back to school / uni deals.
As long as you know how to fully utilise the M2 Max, then it is all good. While I have access to Apple devices and the people I know who own M2 Max do own decent PCs with above average nVidia GPUs, for AI work, we still go PC with nVidia (at least for now).
We'll see what Qualcomm brings to the table and see if it intend to milk customers like Apple or not.
@netsurfer: I am looking forward to what Qualcomm will bring. If it's priced well, it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against what Apple offers. Hopefully replaceable storage, though that's wishful thinking.
@ldd-mn: Qualcomm seems to be waiting for Windows 12. We'll see if Qualcomm (which poached Apple CPU designers) did RAM on chip or separate RAM. SSD, I think will be up to the laptop makers.
Windows ARM will certainly be interesting. Will Apple resurrect Bootcamp? I doubt it. One thing I really dislike about Apple Silicon Mac is switching Boot SSD now is rather annoying.
I'm a PC user and an iMac owner but if I were to choose any laptop . It would hands down no questions asked be a Mac.
They are just leaps and bounds superior in build quality and overall package.
The closest thing in windows world would be razer blade and that costs more and still not being as strong in build quality

im still rocking my intel chip mac from like 2019, not sure if its time for an upgrade, only really use it for uni work so until i grad and actually have some intensive uses for a laptop ill hold strong
