Mrs Macs chilli beef and cheese pies, nothing comes close.

    • Nah, gotta be Mrs Mac's Roast of Day

Strangely I had a bad experience when I was a kid with mashed peas on a pie, I ate it and threw it up hours later. It's probably the only thing I don't eat.

    Four 'N Twenty

    $4.50

    Damn so close

    • They sure missed a trick there.

Great price OP, rarely find these at half price anymore. For a little over a buck-10, a great Aussie lunch.

The first pies were served in inedible pastry boats.

This is a proud tradition that Four ‘N Twenty keeps alive today.

    • +1

Horribly pastry with indescribable filling. Watery and crunchy at the same time. But to get the true "service station pie" experience, they must be microwaved. God bless Australia.

Microwaved AND left in a hot box for 4 hours

      • Horrible pastry
        indescribable filling
Watery, crunchy at the same time
But to get the true "service station pie"
they must be microwaved. (dont you dare close your eyes)
God bless Australia. (hold your breath, it gets better)

      • I should have listen

  • I haven't had these since the 2000s, I wonder how much they've changed.

I defrost them overnight and toast them in a sandwich press. Perfection.

  • "can't remember when the last time they were on half price"
It was actually 2 weeks ago.

    • +1

where was this? I don't remember seeing this deal a few weeks ago

      • +1

It was about 2 weeks ago. I remember because I usually pick up the Pepper Steak ones and was annoyed that it was only the generic that was on special.

        • Discounted but not half price iirc. Angus Pepper Steak variety is very good, maybe a tad too peppery.

          • @Igaf: It needs more back pepper in the filling. Most bakeries simply do not add enough pepper and tend to add a bit of chilli for heat.

        • +1

4 'N 20 Angus Pepper Steak variety back on special at Ww for $7.20 this week.

Microwave for 4 mins and air fry for 5 mins

    • I've been trying to find the best combo for using the airfryer, but it's always hit and miss. Do you preheat first?

      • +1

I microwave for 2mins then air fry for 8 minutes on one side, then flip to the otherside and do for around 7mins. Check and heat for longer as necessary in the air fryer.

    • Doesn't it come out of the microwave super soft/soggy and breaking apart? I do a roughly 1 min / 10-15 minute ratio (160C), factoring in pie height and contents (mince/gravy vs. meat)

      • I usually do 2min40s in the microwave then 8 mins in oven and it comes out crispy, but keen to utilise the airfryer instead of a whole oven.

      • If you plan ahead, defrost them overnight. When you nuke it, the dough breaks aparts, the filling leaks and even burns.

      • Not with some Breville microwaves. Mine has a grill function and came with a special pre-heating pan crisper, works a treat for pies and pastries.

Aldi pies are the best and cheap

    • +1

I used to get them but the last pack I got was pretty average, dont think I got a single chunk

      • Agree, very average, as is the taste (subjective).

    • Aldi price?

    • +1

The sous vide beef ones are great. Apparently rebranded Herbert Adams.

  • do Coles still have the rainchecks? if this sells out before I get some and the sale finishes?

    • +1

      Yes, they have rainchecks.

    • +1

Yes Coles do and Woolies don't. Shame

Recently compared the contents of these with Coles homebrand and the difference was surprising. I'd be checking the ingredients before buying, no matter what the price.

Recently compared the contents of these with Coles homebrand and the difference was surprising.

    You ain't kidding -
    4 Packs
Coles - No Added Hormones Australian Beef (45%)

    Woolies - Beef (26%)

    Four 'N Twenty - Meat (min 25%) (Beef, and / a Mutton)

At $5.50, the coles brand is the winner of these 3 (I have no idea what's in the Aldi one).

    • +2

Aldi 4 pack Elmsbury Chunky Beef - Front of packet says 100% Aussie Beef - Ingredient list says 28% beef & 48% pastry.

      • +1

doesn’t the 100% Aussie Beef just mean that all of the beef is Australian, not that it’s made with only beef

    • +2

doesnt "beef" include fat and gristle?

    • Taste is at least as/more important imo. ALDI Chunky is very mediocre.

  • +1

    I like their chicken pie.
Something about the sauce….I just like.

  • +4

Mmmm you can really taste the recycled gumboots.

    • Well the cows should be told to chew their cud better, as well as not eating with their mouth open.

  • Villies pies are awesome but not the cheapest

    • There is a factory outlet near me, really do need to get there and see what the prices are like. Other places that I shop at sell them at $14/4pk.

Mrs Mac's is usually my first choice, Villi's second.

  • Thanks OP!
