  • Need some advice on a new sff pc im building for gaming. I can either get this 12700k + a Strix b760-i for $660 or a 7600 + strix b650e-i for $740. Both will have a 240mm aio so cooling shouldn’t be an issue.

    • +4

Get AM5 platform since you may upgrade the CPU in the future.

      • Yeah i was thinking thats probably the best idea

        • 7700 $286.66 delivered (if the code still works), easy win.

          https://www.aliexpress.us/item/1005005727055572.html?gateway…

          • @Steakz: Is it legit to buy it from aliexpress?

            • -4

@KSinny: Yes, generally, its basically the western store front for Taobao (Chinese Amazon). And like Amazon, most sellers are legit, but you do have to keep an eye out for scams from time to time (if there's a singular too good to be true deal it probably is). Components in Aliexpress tends to be cheap-ish since they're OEM tray model targeted at builders rather than retail box versions.

I wouldn't bother with the 7700 though, 7500F and 7800X3D are the sweet spot AM5 CPU for gaming, 7700(X) only if you need the extra 2 cores for productivity (video editing/etc…).

    • +1

Don't use SFF if your main purpose is for gaming. They run hot and you are limited to what cards you can install.

    • +2

      i'd go AM5 but i'd buy a ryzen 7700 off aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005727055572.html?spm=a2…

      • +1

are they legit? bloody cheap compared to local stock

        • +1

I've bought some CPUs over the years from Aliexpresss. I haven't had any issues and received legit CPUs

          • @pableeto: Just bought the 7700 and paid $284 which is an absolute steal for the price

      • +1

        Is that legit?

    • Wouldn't you be better off getting a CPU that draws less power / runs cooler and go a low profile air cooler for SFF?

    • SFF for gaming isn't ideal because if you get a 2-3 slot GPU, that somewhat defeats the use of ITX (you can get a bulkier ITX case, but then is it really true ITX)?

AM5 for future proofing is overrated. As an owner of AM5 first gen motherboard, I'd advise against it. Pretty sure next iteration of the motherboards will improve DDR5 memory handling (first gen AM5 CPU + MB combo is fussy on RAM). I had an AM5 system froze in BIOS screen due to DDR5 RAM issue (and that's without overclocking). Also, Intel WiFi 7 is currently a no go with AM4 and AM5. Hopefully, that will get fixed in the next gen AM5 boards.

Even for AM4, I found B550 RAM handling better than B450. Changing RAM modules, B550 just works fine. My MSI B450 board, I had to lower the RAM settings for older RAM because it doesn't seem to read XMP properly (and that's on the latest BIOS). Newer RAM modules work fine. Also, B550 boards have better DDR4 RAM handling.

      • Im getting the Formd t1 and a 2.5-3 slot 4080 from zotac so it’s nice and small while still fitting top of the line parts

        • If you're spending so much why wouldn't you get a 7800X3D?

        • Sounds like Optimum build lol

        • +2

yeah if you are burning cash on a 4080, you really ought get a 7800X3D.

        • +1

It also depends on the resolution and frame rates you're playing at. lower res and higher frame rates taxes your CPU higher. If you're doing 4k, or ultra wide at 144hz you can get away with any old CPU around a 12600k or better. If you're playing 240hz at 1440p or lower, I'd go with a 7800x3d

          • @ThirtySixNights: Ive got a samsung oled g8 so 3440x1440 165hz. Will I see much difference between the 7600 and the 7800x3d? Was thinking of getting the 7600 now and upgrading to the new 8800x3d or whatever its called later on.

            • +2

@KSinny: No, I doubt you'll see much of a difference at that resolution. maybe 3-5%. You can see on this video for example..

              https://youtu.be/BYJ3ANH9T4A?si=b4GGp2FV5Rh_1YL5

At 1080p the difference is substantial, but by the time it's at 4k resolution, the difference is just a few frames. The difference for you will be even smaller with a 4080.

              • +1

@ThirtySixNights: Thanks mate I think for nearly half the price its more worth going with the 7600 then upgrading later

      • Would the Strix b650e-i for $433 be worth the extra?

        • unless you need the I/O features from the strix board not really. I think the strix supports pcie gen 5 and has better rear I/O (e.g. usb-C display out) if those matter to you, but people frequently report coil whine from AM5 strix motherboards.

btw the lightning board seems to be $356.82 from Amazon Japan if you click through "Other sellers on Amazon"

          • @povogamer: What about the MSI B650I Edge for $359?

            • @KSinny: I think it should be fine but people complain about the CMOS battery being drained out of the box (the rear "clear cmos" button allegedly sticks out too much by design, causing accidental activation). I would personally just go with the lightning which is the current SFF favourite.

              • @povogamer: Thanks mate, main reason I’m a bit weary of ASRock is I’ve heard the bios is terrible

  • Hey everyone already got a B660 board with a 12400 F. Currently using a RTX 3070 is it worth upgrading to the CPU over the 12 400 F?

    • +3

No, wait for 15th gen release then snag a deal on a 14th/13th gen.

    • +1

If it is pure gaming, you generally want a latest gen CPU.

  • -1

Better to get the cheaper KF version. No idea why you'd want iGPU.

    • +1

For Quicksync. Otherwise, yes, very little benefit for desktop users.

EDIT - and looks like its $308 with the same code: https://www.centrecom.com.au/intel-core-i7-12700kf-lga-1700-…

    • +2

For me the main reason would be for troubleshooting purposes when your gpu doesn’t display anything.

    • Use the igpu for 2nd display.

    • QuickSync, troubleshooting, and the ability to reuse the platform when you do eventually upgrade (NAS/Router/HTPC/basic PC for your folks).

  • Dammit. I literally ordered it this morning with the $100 discount (it's been shipped already so can't cancel and re-order). Oh well, still a great deal!

    • +11

Please pm me your order number and details, i will send you another $20 voucher to make up the differences

      • Oh man am i eligible for $20 voucher if i used the previous TAKE100 $100 off deal on the 31-03-24 a day before this deal?

      • Any chance of a $120 discount on the 12600K?

  • +1

Any suggestions for a motherboard to go with this?

Want to avoid Gigabyte as I've had some frustrating issues with my b560 aorus pro ax

  • +1

    Great deal, thanks OP!

  • Wouldn't an i5-14600K be better suited right now even with this $120 discount? Especially for just a gaming rig.

  • Bugger , still waiting on the one I bought with the $100 discount last week to be delivered together with Motherboard,PSU and case.
Grrrr hate it when this happens.

  • Code is not working anymore? Order total still $429

    • Yeah strange, only read one part of the T&Cs but sale was to end in May sometime…
