    MSY has options much cheaper.

I take that back, some of those might not be as high rez. I will look into and post what i find.

      • The only comparable one there is Asus PB278Q which is $672. You can get generic korean displays (Achieva/Catleap) with the same panel for about $350, but it might be worth going Kogan for some semblance of a warranty and support

Plus HDMI, displayport, VGA connectors, dead pixel guarantees, and a few other "luxuries" the Korean ones are missing.

On the other hand, the Korean ones will probably ship to you in a week or so, instead of months.

        • +1

Not to mention Kogan's will be power approved, where the Koreans are not.

        • -1

The extra connections add input lag. And some of the Korean monitors also run at 120hz. But unless you're using them predominantly for gaming, this deal is better than the catleaps

        • +4

I got a Shimian QH270 for $285 landed which arrived on Monday. Took about 3 days to ship and 5 day for the FedEx from Korea.

No dead pixels or any other issues. Its my 2nd screen.. I got my first one, a Catleap Q270 for $340'ish many months ago. Again with no issues.

          Hi Thrawn
Who did you buy this from?
          Thanks Mark

        • i think kogan is rebranding the same lg panels that the koreans are selling. thats the only way he can have ips 27" at same resolution AND market it towards apple customers (as per picture) and price it the same (plus the kogan rebrand tax)

does the shimian or kogan have 120hz?

in terms of better warranty, whats kogans dead pixel policy

        • Lucky you (Thrawn), I bought one of those too which developed a 7cm wide vertical white bar up the middle of the screen, cost 150$ to send back, which hopefully will be refunded :(

It was also my second one, the first had a crap PSU (which I switched with this one before sending it back).

        • Lucky, mine had 2 dead pixel, fortunately black. with the 1440px, the dots are hardly noticable, it appeared 2 weeks into my use.

        • +1

Cyber: Better of biting the bullet and getting this Kogan one…? once you get your refund of course.

        • +1

New models (they call them gold i think) have multiple inputs, hdmi and dp along with dv. They also have scalers build in so 1080p signals will scale and pixel map onto 1440p resolution.

But reassurance and reliable warranty is still missing so if you're not into gambling.

        • Where did you get it, ebay?

        • which models are u referring to krisspy? do they still have 120hz?

        • Yeap got mine on ebay.

Its the crossover 27". The earliest models had the overclockable drivers, new ones don't. So you need to be lucky to get really old stock

          dhsummer eBay seller

OK, I take that back. The only think similar at MSY is $600+ so this does seem like a decent deal if this holds up.

Quad HD is a reference to 4K resolution, which this clearly does not have.

Misleading marketing from whoever made the claim.

  • Anyone buying from Kogan need to be aware that if they have any issue with their products, expect to wait for a VERY long time to get either a replacement of refund!!! Kogan only allow you to email them with your issues (no phone # to call) and they take ages to reply to your emails!.

I had and issue with a wireless webcam that I purchased from them. It took them over 2 weeks to send me a return label so I could send them faulty webcam to them. Its now 4 weeks and I still have not received my refund.

  • Kogan gets to hang on to your money for a long time for this. Reckon you will get it before new year's?

    • +1

I'm on to my 5th job ref # for the same item and still no response on when the money will be refunded. The webcam was actually to be used as a baby monitor (has remove iphone feature). I've since purchase an original Foscam instead.

They are a bunch of morons.

  • +2

Is this similar to the yamakasi catleap or achieva shimian?

    • +1

I'd reckon so…TBH I'd save the money & grab one of those two off a reputable ebayer for ~$350 & be using it in under a week! ;)

    • probably.
      btw this is 1440p which is 4 x 720p = Quad HD.

      • yeh same as the catleaps

    • Depends how good kogans refund policy and pixel policies are really. some people say its a horrible experience and takes a while to get a response, then you might aswell buy from korea and get it expedited to your door in 5 days

  • +2

Eh how's this compare to a cat leap?

  • You really need to see a review for this kind of monitor as these can sometimes have a lot of input lag and other issues.

Either way like usual when you get this product in nearly 2 months things could be very different.

Catleap and other korean ones use LG LM270WQ1, this uses LG LM270WQ1-SDA2, same as the apple iMac.

    • Holy shit. I just bought my crossover perfect pixel for 500 few months ago. Now kogan sells a better screen for cheaper price?

      • +5

Just because its the same panel doesn't mean its the same quality.

My guess is that these Kogan panels; just like the Catleaps, are rejects from Apple's/Dell's/Asus' QA tests.

        • but still. A better quality reject stock. How is it as bad as the korean stock. LG IPS panels are awesome.

        • I'm still not 100% sold on this whole 'reject' thing anyway…AFAIK that's just speculation, I've seen no hard evidence to confirm or deny the theory.

        • Either way, nobody can be sure what a good monitor is until its been purchased and reviewed.

Kogan and generic brands don't have the reputation to just blindly buy and trust it will be a good product.

        • Many sellers are / were listing Catleaps as A- grade panels and implying Dell / HP etc use Grade A

..the criteria for that ranking I have no idea

        • Either way, nobody can be sure what a good monitor is until its been purchased and reviewed.

Plenty of happy purchasers over at WP happy to proffer reviews: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1922355

Kogan and generic brands don't have the reputation to just blindly buy and trust it will be a good product.

Unfortunately, that's the gamble you take when you save such a significant amount of money on a purchase like this…fortunately though, you have the benefit of reams of anecdotal evidence out there to help guide the decison! ;)

        • They 'rejects' according to the individual company's criteria. If dell/apple doesnt approve of the standard gamma/contrast/response pre-calibration then it's considered as A-.

The main advantage of these were originally for techies to grab a cheap panel and calibrate it to apple's standards. Plus the first generation driverboards were overclockable. I've got one running at 90hz at the moment. AFIK there isnt any 1440p screens thats gaming oriented that goes over 60Hz.

        • I have heard about the early overclockable models.

Not sure why they'd remove a unique feature like that, a ~120hz IPS display would fly off the shelves at a high price

        • I think it was to cut costs and what not. But there was a post on overclockers forums where they grabbed a hold of the manufacturer and he said he might be able to make a limited run if there were enough orders for it. I haven't been following it since but a couple of friends did have luck getting older pcb's by ordering the models with the swivel stand. Guess it was just pure luck that no one bought those models lol.

        • You can get the special runs of 120Hz catleaps here: http://120hz.net/. Beware that you need hacked drivers to run 120Hz over dual-link DVI, and so only a few desktop graphics cards are supported.

    dispatch expected on 24 Dec

holy sh!t Santa! don't be so obvious.

I think I'm liable to wait and see how this turns out.

Nothing like laying this kind of cash and have it turn into a turd

"but considering Kogan as quite reputable seller."

please tell me that was sarcastic!

    • +2

Keep in mind when comparing most vendors use Grey to Grey response time

  • +1

What is the pixel policy for Kogan monitor ? Very nice panel though .

  • Anyone who uses VGA with a monitor of this kind…. Should not be using technology IMHO :/

    • +2

Eh? I think the idea is you can hook up legacy equipment like older laptops, game consoles etc that cannot drive it at 2560×1440 anyway

      • +1

Even modern laptops cant drive it (unless using VGA). Most HDMI ports are capped resolution to 1920x1200, and many laptop DisplayPorts are also capped at the same res.

        • Even modern laptops cant drive it (unless using VGA)

          I think you meant DVI?

I think if you have a laptop atleast 3 years old with display port, then it should be fine. My studio xps 16's displayport isnt capped.

        • I meant VGA, but yes, Dual Link DVI as well (rare to see on laptops)

I have 2 laptops: one with HDMI + VGA (1 week old), the other with HDMI + DisplayPort (2 years old). Only the VGA on the new laptop is capable of running the screen at the correct resolution. I believe the root cause of this is the dedicated graphics vs. integrated, and I suspect the DisplayPort is just a HDMI port with an in built adapter for convenience.

        • Isn't vga restricted to a max res similar to the retina display? 2100x1500 something. I'm using an active converter from DP>DVI-D for mine since my vga doesnt quite reach 1440p

        • I believe you might be right. The max resolution of VGA is 2048x1536@85hz (Wiki), I think perhaps that as the resolution increases, the max refresh rate drops. All I know is that currently I am typing this on a screen running 2560x1440@60hz connected via a VGA connector.

        • I have a Dell 27" and it is capable of being driven at 2560x1440 by either the HDMI or Display Port from an Asus G71 and Dell XP17.

The only trick with HDMI is that the monitor informs the display card that it only supports 1920x1080 via HDMI. Override this setting and it works fine.

Monitors like this make me tempted to mount 3 in portrait mode and switch back to using a desktop.

    • Why would they bother putting in a HDMI then? HDMI caps out at 1920x1200.

  • Coming from a Crossover owner, I think this is a better buy than the korean monitors. They use a similar LG panel and warranty would be local, instead of $100+ to ship it back to korea.

Still need to find out about Kogan's pixel policy, If they're importing the panels from the same place as korean vendors, chances are they might have to adopt a similar policy as them to protect themselves.

  • Anyone know if these ones scale / pixel map? Would love to get one for the PC / XBOX 360… but have found a few larger monitors will only display a windows 1080p for the xbox…

    • I have the Shimian QHD270, and it scales the PS3 to fit the screen. On a PC, there is an option to enable scaling within the graphics card's control panel.

  • Glossy screen or matt guys?

  • I think they are getting cheap now Because touch screen one is coming.

    • Nope, this is just Catleap / Yamasaki type screens (that can be had for as low as $300) coming in through a more mainstream distributor

Large touchscreens are awkward / uncomfortable to use at a desk without complicated stands.

    • +2

Work let me try a touch screen for a day. Good if you want toned arms after a few weeks.

  • I have bought 3 Catleaps(all for my colleagues) from bigclothcraft (ebay seller) for my office and I have had no pixel problems on any of them, they did the free pixel check for each before sending. Also others on WP have returned or swapped monitors due to defects and received shipping fees back as well.

I have another at home from them. Frankly they are better screens quality wise than my boss's 27inch dell(which has a much better stand + usb hub features etc).

On the other hand this is ideal if you want to use it with a laptop i reckon, as the catleap's and their brothers come with only dual link dvi(meaning the kogan).

  • i was comparing this monitor the the catleap/shimian korean monitor specs.

the only main difference was catleap/shimian had a reaction/response time of 6ms
while this kogan one has 12ms…

i dont know what this 'response time' really means… does 6ms and 12ms make much of a difference?

    • typically for fast action, IE sports and movies, a lower response time helps remove ghosting… plenty on the ww about it.
