  • Im currently looking for a replacement for my mums vodaphone TV box which is very old and has become extremely sluggish to use. Can anyone that owns one of these confirm if the below apps can be downloaded onto this device:
Hayu, foxtel now, Disney+, Stan, Prime and all the free to air apps like 7plus 10 plays etc?
It took her ages to learn her way around the vodaphone TV so I’m hoping this one is similar, otherwise it’s so many phone calls for help :/

Currently, I have a 1st gen of this TV box. still running like a cham. I have installed Prime and Binge before. I don't see any issue with your apps list as they are commonly available in Google Play Store. this box uses the Google Play Store. I also sideload other apps outside the Google Play Store. only took a bit of effort to sideload it initially and place it on the home screen for quick access. I don't see much differences between 1st and 2nd gen in terms of hardware. I also connected this box to a Sony TV from 2014 or 2015. only requires a Xiaomi remote control to turn on and off the Sony TV to save me from carrying 2 remotes. please note that I don't watch any programs on the TV. 99% of the watch time is from this TV box including kids' YouTube. Hope this helps.

      • Yep this helps a lot! Good to know it’s google play store as I believe the vodaphone TV was the same and that had everything she needed. Also really helpful to know if one of the apps she uses is not there I will just be able to sideload on and add to Home Screen.
Thanks again for the detailed response

        • have you tried doing a factory reset on the voda box to perk it up - i've done that to two of them i bought used and the reset had them both running smooth - worth a try - its somewhere in settings

      I'd get a Google TV/Chromecast.

Intuitive interface, quick and just works.
Also the added advantage of being able to use phone apps and cast to the TV (which is how my other half watches catchup tv because they can't find the remote)

      • +2

Pretty sure this box has a chromecast built in so you can cast from your phone.

        • yeah, these third-party boxes seem to have issues with Chromecast (not connecting properly, drop outs, etc). Maybe they'd have sort that out with this one, but the 1s did. Even ones like Fetch boxes have stability issues.

I got negged from Apple haters last time a user asked me what device I use and answered Apple TV, but could I suggest looking into finding a second hand Apple TV 4K? Like a lot of their devices such as the iPhone, the iOS is very easy to navigate and my elderly in-laws and young nephews could work it blindfolded. You could download all those apps listed for her and show her the basic functions.

      • Yeah, Apple products are user-friendly for non-tech savvy users.

        Apple haters

I do like how Apple users treat any criticism of an Apple products as coming from Apple haters.

Their interface for iPhone users is obviously better. But their features can be a bit hamstrung. If you're not an iPhone/IOS user, their interface can be unintuitive.

They're also expensive for what they do.
$219.for.a new one, this is $80. Google TV & Firestick.are also nearly 1/3 the price. Heaps cheaper then a 2nd hand Apple TV

        • I do like how Apple users treat any criticism of an Apple products as coming from Apple haters.

I saw no other reason for being negged just for responding to someone asking what device I used. FWIW, I’m not an Apple Fanboi, neither do I hate other devices.

I’m speaking in terms of user’s mother’s learning curve with the existing advice and had a look at recently completed listings for 1st gen Apple TV 4Ks and they’re going for between $100 and $120.

Sorry for trying to help 🤷🏽‍♂️

          • +1

@Chickenleg: The negs were probably as someone above mentioned, they are expensive for basically doing the same as an android tv box. Id say if you use apple phones etc get one due to the ecosystem otherwise no way.

            confirming what I said.

yep, but they old second hand tech for 50% more.

Yep, thats good, don't take criticism/counter views or a neg vote as a personal attack.

    • After Vodaphone TV is booted, it's fast enough to scroll through the options.

      • Same our VTV is still quick enough, faster than the kids new entry level tcl or jvc tv's

  • +1

    Why this over Google Chromecast?

    • +11

This has a built in USB port for one, so much more convenient to play media from external storage.

  • Is this faster than Google gen 2 chromecast. Mine lags sometimes.

  • Can this stream from a NAS.

    • Yes. Using Plex or Kodi etc

      • Thanks

        • VLC works if you want something quick to use, Then use Plex/Kodi/Emby which take a little time to setup but are worth the effort..

I just sold my 2 x Apple TV 4K and bought Fire Cubes.

The ATV have been very easy to use but the locked IOS means you can’t install Stremio. After the change to Netflix overseas billing, this is now required.

My Turkish Netflix account was 7 years old and about $7 a month. Netflix cancelled my account. Now my Stremio + RD is $4 a month with more content. Thanks for the push Netflix.

      • May I ask what payment method you are using?
I'm currently loaded up with Turkish vouchers and still have access. Friend's and family of mine were using credit cards for the Turkish loop but have since had their accounts blocked also

        • I did read one post somewhere of someone using Turkish Netflix vouchers who got cancelled. I thought it was part of their ** password sharing. Crackdown** i.e. you have a Turkish account, but use it outside.

      • Keen to know this too. I also use Turkish vouchers instead of credit card.

      • mate, could you share how you got on configuring this stremio rd stuff you mention?

  • how much better is it than first gen ? Anyone has both and can provide real world experience?

I got Amazon fire 4K max and I could side load apps

Get a Chromecast with Google TV 4K. Way better. $88 at OfficeWorks https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/google-chr…

    • +3

It depends. For people play a lot of downloaded media, Xiaomi is the one.

    • Chromecast is poo when you want Dolby Vision and HDR playback.

  • Decoder max 60 FPS at 4k. Is that sufficient?

  • Does huble fit the bill, has antenna input for free to air and internet for steaming. Very similar to the old Voda.

I love my Xiaomi Mi (1st gen) but its on my base TV so dont really need the upgraded features otherwise I'd jump on it. Got a Shield for my main TV which has the two USB ports so it gets the nod over getting another Xiaomi with only one USB. Anyone that needs a box with USB though I can definitely give this a thumbs up.

    • You can use a USB hub if you need more ports.

  • I just opened my fire tv cube purchased on black friday to upgrade my mi box 3 as it doesn't do hdr+ to go with the new tcl 75" deal, dissapointed the new cube won't recognise usb 100% time to play my media, thinking of getting this. the 3 is still going strong, and highly recommend.kodi and smarttube next are our goto's.

    • Could it just be a file format issue?

      • wish it was, it randomly would recognise the droves/sticks when I was setting it up and then next restart, wouldn't appear. Ordered the mi box, expecting it to arrive tomorrow. If a future firmware fixes the issue with the cube it would be a bonus

  • +1

I had 1 of these for a while and just found it way to buggy.
Turning on TV it would randomly turn on the sound bar, sometimes turn the TV on.

Ended up getting a chomecast 4k and it works perfectly to the point i never need the TV remote, yes its not a power house and i still have a set top box sitting there when i need more processing power but for general use i run the chomecast 99% of the time.

  • Just received mine today, but the remote setup is acting up. I'm able to set up the volume controls to my soundbar, but the power button refuses to do anything.

Anyone else having the same issue?

    • Try enabling HDMI-CEC in settings.

      • Just checked this - all the HDMI-CEC settings are on. When I press the power button there isn't any response from the light on the box either.

        Might be a dud remote.

  • +1

I've had one since November 2023 and it's been great!

It plugs into my TV, and my TV plugs into my soundbar.

I only ever have to use the Xiaomi remote to control TV and soundbar.

Dolby Vision & HDR playback is flawless as well through an app I will not mention incase it breaks site rules.

For free to air on my Xiaomi box I use tivimate & Matt's IPTV channel playlists https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/01/live-au-iptv-channels-on-…
