Is this better than Amazon fire TV 4k. 1 advantage this has is USB playback.

    • And it has built-in chromecast

    • Consider a fire tv cube

      • Twice the price, is it twice as good?

        • +10

          You just spendmore.

        • +1

Always goes on special for ~50% off.

        • If you're pay full price then you've got to be an idiot. I got my Fire TV Cube 4K for $109.50 from a JB half price coupon deal back in September. It's really great for the price.

          • +3

@hollykryten: And it would be a fair comparison at that price, although id prefer straight android not Amazons version.
When its full price like now then its not a very good comparison.

            • +1

@Spendmore: To be fair the Fire TV OS is just Android TV under the hood. I was able to easily side load the latest KODI on it without any fuss using the AFTVnews Downloader app.

              • @hollykryten: There are some streaming apps that don't work on the fire tv cube from my experience. Usually it's apps that require google play services.

If you don't need the Google Play services, fire tv cube is good when it pops up at half price. Otherwise, I'd choose a Chromecast with Google tv over the mi box. I found the mi box to be quite sluggish.

                • @DangerNoodle: Can you sideload those apps on the Fire TV Cube if you have the .apks?

                  • @Ice009: You can sideload the APK but when you open the app it won't let you stream because it fails the initial google play services check and all you see is the warning screen for an unsupported device.

                    • @DangerNoodle: Right, thanks. So getting the Fire Cube TV isn't worth it if you want to sideload certain apps? I've got a Mecool KM6 and pretty much any app I've tried to sideload on it works. I've been looking for a second media player/tv box as the Mecool doesn't have a Netflix app, but most other streaming service apps I've tried work OK on it.

I would have grabbed this Xiaomi, but unfortunately I need an ethernet port :(.

                      • @Ice009: It depends on your apps. Most apps work on the fire cube tv, it's just a few of the Asian streaming apps that I use that get blocked. Aside from that, the fire cube tv works well. Most of the gaming apps work on fire cube tv.

                        • @DangerNoodle: Alright, thanks for the info. I also hear some boxes don't support stuff like BBC iplayer. Didn't realize that also requires the correct licensing to use it on your box.

I also found this tv box that someone recommended https://www.homatics.com/products/box-r-4k?variant=432171705…
Apparently these guys are good with firmware and updates (something I've never seen with my Mecool KM6. Haven't seen any updates in the two years I've owned it which is kind of disappointing). The Mecool also doesn't have Netflix support, so apart from that and the lack of updates, I still think it's a pretty good player.

I wonder if I order the Homatics, could I just use a travel adapter since they don't have an AU plug version? Does anyone know about that stuff? I assume as long as it can handle 230V/240V 50Hz (EU and UK have that) it should be OK to use in AU with an adapter

                          • @Ice009: From initial looks, it should be fine. It has widevine L1 which will be good for hdr streaming. There are some boxes like the beelink gt king 2 that will advertise 4k support but I've heard reports that it only has widevine L3 so you can't stream in 4k in most apps.

                            • @DangerNoodle: Thanks, appreciate the help. I'm going to look into this Homatics box a bit more. I'll just buy a cheap adapter and hopefully that is good enough if I decide to get one of these.

As for DRM, thanks for telling me about the differences between Widevine L1 & L3 as I've never really looked into that (I've seen both listed, but didn't know the differences). So level 1 is required if you want 4K streaming.
Should a TV box also support PlayReady DRM? Is that also important?

                              • @Ice009: I'm not too familiar with play ready. I know widevine L1 is the one you need for Netflix and Disney 4k HDR and possibly prime video?

    • +1

All a Firestick needs for USB playback is an OTG cable.

  • +4

only 8gb rom , whilst sufficient would probably prefer google chromecast with tv for less, and gets more updates

    • Basically answered my question below at same time I asked +1

    • +1

You can just plug in usb storage.

    • +1

Yes but you get native USB and analogue audio output from this. Big features imo

  • +1

Benefits to this over Chromecast 4k ?
USB playback and local device set up + possibly larger internal RAM + HDD or just the USB slots mainly?

    • +1

From my experience, Chromecast runs smoother if all you use is apps. Fire tv cube is better for USB playback when it's on half price. Shield tv pro is the better android tv experience. Mi box doesn't get updated as often.

  • +1

Really not that big a difference between 1st gen and I have a bunch of those in different rooms.

The 2gb is the poor part of this unit, and the 1st gen, and I'm annoyed they didn't update it to 4gb. I have a Shield in the lounge and that has 4gb…. any less than 4gb and you see it and feel it.

    • Shield Pro 2019 (latest model) actually has 3gb, but I agree that's enough to make a huge difference compared to these 2gb devices.

  • Is this like the Moonbox? Comes with the Chinese tv app?

Best Android TV boxes and sticks in 2023
    https://www.xda-developers.com/best-android-tv-box/

    • Nvidia Shield TV Pro For the win

      • I find mine slow and buggy unfortunately

        • How long you had yours open it up give it a clean from the inside reset it

  • Anyone know the cheapest device, for a dumb tv, if all I want is YouTube and Netflix? Preferably with a remote. 1080p.

  • They just screwed up my first gen android box with latest software update 😑😑😑😑

    • Thanks for the tip, will avoid updating mine. I've seen some threads on XDA about downgrading the firmware on these devices before so it should be possible.

      • Thanks I will give a try.

    • My first gen became too slow to navigate about 2 ago but I got many years of great service out of it. Would consider Xiaomi again.

      • Week ago I shifted to Motorola Android box (2gb +16gb), remote is bit bulkier but it has 16gb storage

        • I bit the bullet and bought a Shield after the Xiaomi gen 1. No regrets.

  • +1

Just save a bit and get Nvidia Shield TV Pro best thing ever

    • +1

Isn't it around 3 times the price of this?

  • -3

What's the point in these devices when you have a 'smart TV'? Aren't they all use similar apps?

    • +1

      Not everybody have smart TV

      • Those who do, inevitably stop using built in apps as the TVs fail to be able to keep up with updates and larger processor demands.

    • +5

Most smart tv's have painfully slow UI

      • +2

And are buggier and have less features & customisation. Devices let you install apps like Smartubenext for ad-free Youtube viewing and Kodi, etc.

        • Not sure how the newer TVs work as I still have an older model, but can you sideload apps like you can on these boxes such as the Xiaomi if the TV has something like Android or Google TV? I know you probably can't on Samsung and LG that have difference operating systems, but was just curious if you can on Android TV based models.

    • I bought a couple of Firestick 4k max when it was less than $40 each and they have been pretty good with my smart tvs.
It's just so much more responsive compared to the stock OS on the TV. I wouldn't pay a lot of money to get one if you have a smart tv but for what I paid, I'm happy with what I'm getting out of it. I have also installed stremio on it, which has been great also.

      • Was that some kind of deal on Amazon recently to get two for less than the cost of one?

        • It was in July this year when they were selling two for $79.

          • @keejoonc: Thanks. I'll keep watch for any upcoming deals.

    • I wanted to play bluray rip files that have atmos truehd (lossless) but through the TV usb or plex app, it doesn't work. Nvidia shield pro works.
Unsure about this one so keen to know.

      • Yes, this would do Atmos bistream passthrough to your soundbar or receivee. You just need to be mindful of the bitrate of 4k UHD + Atmos and make sure you can sustain it over wifi. You can get a usb to gibabit adapter but youll be limited to around 480 mbps by the USB 2.0 port (less if you count the usb protocol overhead). Also there are reports of the usb to ethernet adapters loosing connection when the unit wakes up from sleep and needing to reset the connection.

    • these have a lot more grunt hardware wise. If you feel the default apps and OS is fine on your TV, no reason to upgrade.

  • +1

The Xiaomi Mi Box S left my TCL 'smart TV' for dead… I wish I kept it. Tick this unit. Recommended.

  • Apparently has a Amlogic S905X, so is probably compatible with CoreELEC

  • All these high specs and a USB 2.0 port. What are they thinking?

  • No one can beat Apple TV 4K. Then the Nvidia Shield TV Pro IMO.

  • Wow, this is an amazing deal! 😍 Thanks a lot, superforever, for sharing this with us on OzBargain. 🙌 You are awesome! 👏 I just ordered a new Xiaomi TV Box S 2nd Gen for myself. 📺 I’m so glad I had a subscription set for any deals posted. 🙏 This is exactly what I was looking for. 😊

  • "Now with built-in Google Assistant?" this is the only way to advertise this feature as you really don't know what you're getting :)

  • 2gb ram ? Damn that's a bottle neck imo

  • I've had the first gen for ages and it's been a workhorse for streaming local and online content. I've even managed to get Xbox game pass streaming games using steamlink, but it isn't the smoothest experience. Interested to know if this gen 2 version can do a better job. If you have an apple tv, Xbox game pass streaming is pretty good. Crazy what these things can do.

  • Anyone else order this and get two shipping notifications?

    • One for the tv box and one for the power pin converter. TBH it's a bit stupid having a wall wart that is 100mm deep

  • I wonder why they don't include an ethernet port on their boxes. I would have bought one if they did :(.
