This is almost certainly gaol spec

    • +1

      Bought 10 for my dungeon

    • +1

Is this the comment where i realise i am an old confused man at 38?

      • +2

Electronics that are specced so that prison inmates are allowed to have them is not a particularly new thing, so your age is irrelevant. It more likely means you haven't spent much time in gaol or looked into the intricacies of gaol life much.

To summarize: They tend to be clear so that guards can see that there isn't contraband inside, and they tend to be things that would be handy in a cell but not popular with the general population, like a portable cd player or perhaps more interesting, typewriters

Also less interesting differences like security screws and no loud speakers

CD Player w/ Bluetooth, FM Radio, TF Card $69.97

Oh my, take all my 69.97 pocket money dollars (Delivered) in 2001.

    • +4

I remember getting a mp3 discman back in 98, 13 cds on one, just magic for that longhaul flight. 2yrs later I had a solid state mp3 player. It was like an offline Spotify all ripped from Audio galaxy,

  • +4

Or just listen to FLAC which will be a 1:1 copy.

I get romanticising retro record players and tapes because they do sound different (for better or worse), but doing the same for CDs makes no sense. It’s literally identical digital data on different storage. It’s like getting excited about reading a PDF on a desktop instead of a laptop, it’s the same file.

    • +11

It's the cd skips that make the 1s and 0s unique my friend

      • +1

That would be like getting excited about getting to read a PDF on a copy where some pages are missing.

        • +4

Got any more PDF related analogies?

          • @AustriaBargain: Got any actual retort why my analogies are wrong?

            • +6

@PainToad: I just want to hear more about how music is like PDFs.

              • @AustriaBargain: Sheet music on PDF? You have to play it yourself though, and much like CD skips, it might be too hard to read through tears after copping FLAC on OzBargain. I kid!

              • +1

                @AustriaBargain:

I just want to hear more about how music is like PDFs.

                PDFs are documents.
                CDs are music.
                Both are media.

                PDFs are digital media.
                CDs are digital media.

    • +1

I have a DAP, I got this to play my CD collection which cbf ripping. It's a $70 toy

      • +1

        Fair point.

    • Or use something like Apple Music or Tidal which also has lossless audio now. Spatial and HD even for some albums.

Owning a record player and records is like a luxury imo. When you own a house and have money and space to spare, you buy antiques or reproductions of antiques to full that space and spend that money.

    • +3

Sounds like you're just jealous of my 6 stacker.

    • +1

There are some differences to the analogy though…
CD Audio is uncompressed PCM. The sound experience will also be dependent on the ΣΔ DAC and amplifier.

      • CD Audio is uncompressed PCM

FLAC is 100% the same (bit exact) version of the source PCM. It’s the same as taking a RAW image and putting it in a ZIP archive. Once unzipped the file is identical to the original.

sound experience will also be dependent on the ΣΔ DAC and amplifier.

Which so long as the player supports AUX out it doesn’t matter if the player is a CD player or not.

      • CD Audio is uncompressed PCM.

And so is the lossless FLAC file.

    • +2

I listen to CDs as well as records, Spotify, and files.

It's not about how it sounds to me. But the experience of browsing my collection on a shelf and physically selecting the CD to play is very different. It's waaaaaay easier to look at my big shelf and pick something out rather than have to navigate software. And, if I'm in the mood, I like to look at the details on the covers and booklet - often it immerses me in the time context or the mood of what I'm listening to.

The audio does of course sound exactly the same as FLACs.

    • +1

clearly not a PDF-phile, you're just not appreciating the 'warmth' of reading a low line count CRT instad of the harsh digital optical assault of a 'retina' LCD panel /s

    • but doing the same for CDs makes no sense.

back when people started romanticising vinyl, I said CDs will be next. "No way" people responded, "nobody is that stupid!". I stand vindicated.

My next prediction is the return of MP3 over AAC / FLAC , for the "warmer tones" and less harsh feel.

  • +3

This thing looks awesome. Also comes with a case and headphones, and can be loaded up with MP3s on a memory card - what's not to like!

For the aged people around - there's nothing quite like the tactility of those ridiculously complicated on-cord remotes that came with all the walkmans and minidisc players, complete with jog dials and screens. What a time it was to be alive!

    • +1

I was from that era but I don't miss the tech from that period lol. I love the convenience of modern tech and the ability to store 21TB of data on a single HDD which would have been impossible back then.

  • +1

Also comes in woodgrain for the same price

    Just like I thought. It's not 1992.

    • +3

      not 1992

Sure it's not 1992 right now, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?

    • +4

I think most of us were rocking portable cassette players back in 1992…

    • Check again….
      It actually is 1996

  • +6

sometimes when i get really bored at work i like to think i am instead in 2007, sitting in the food court of my local westfield listening to portable cd player with a burnt copy of so fresh 2006, track 1, mariah carey: we belong together.

todays lunch? kfc zinger meal. chips piping hot fresh. drink? mountain dew.

just watching the world go by during lunch break.

damn hey simpler times back then.

About which you learn from TV.

Huh? The internet did exist in 2007. Google Reader + RSS feeds.

          • +1

            @PainToad: Sure thing it existed.

I was lucky not to be permanently online back then yet.

          • @PainToad: I don’t actually remember reading much news etc back in the day mainly because we still only had dial up at the time and my time was spent on msn messenger and bebo

        • i had an iphone in ‘07, ordered soon as they doubled storage and dropped th price

          • @0jay: Unless you imported one, you didn’t get an iPhone until 2008.

            • @PainToad:

              Unless you imported one

I was in Spain at the time, got a friend in the US to mail it to Madrid.

Why lying about it is a likely option has me baffled

              • @0jay: Didn’t think you were lying. Thought you had the years mixed up.

    • +3

I had a lot more collagen on my face back in 2006, and a bit more hair lol

      • +2

Yeah now my hair migrating slowly from head to back 😭

    • Weed and ciggies were cheaper back then too. You could get a whole box of Cruisers for like $12.

      • +2

I wasn’t game enough for weed back then even though there was a dealer who was an friend of a friend a and my dart choice was black devil cigarettes - looking back on the times now I would have backhanded teenager me.

And don’t even get me started on the raspberry cruisers or mudshakes

        • +1

Ahh taking an 8-pack of Tooheys Extra Dry Platinums to a gatho and feeling the need to drink every one of them.

          • +2

@Hinee: I remember the first time we got an older kid to buy us a case of coronas for the first house party we went to with no parents. We all took a sip and spat it right back out. People drink thissss??? The host trying to be a big man tanked two and promptly vomited on the fur rug. Lol

    • Just out of curiosity…..did you put your own rubbish into the bin after you finished?

Doesn't seems that's the case at food courts these days

      • +2

Yes I do, I was not raised in a barn.
I remember clearly the look of disdain I gave to my friend at the time when he used to never clean his shit up at food courts when we ate out. His excuse was it keeps the cleaners in a job. I actually still think about that moment a lot.

  • Still waiting for a cheap minidiscman alternative.

This cd player for $75.95 has some video reviews and looks interesting: https://www.amazon.com.au/Rechargeable-Portable-Player-Earph…

    • I used to have a sony and an onkyo, and also a MD deck in my car. I threw everything out :(

    • Still waiting for a cheap minidiscman alternative

You could probably import cheap minidisc players direct from Japan…

  • +1

This beast looks cool. You can probably see the disc start spinning. Looove the double headphone jack, the lucky person sitting next to you can bop along too. You know that you’re toxic rosebank.

  • +2

the physical media havers will have the last laugh when the internet apocalypse happens

    • +2

My biggest regret is selling my Zune HD smh my head

Me working at hn back in the day:

        Whole sales floor: goes quiet

  • +2

Damn, 100 seconds anti-skip! Pretty sure my Discman only had like 20 and that was one of the best (and still wasn't enough on the bus to uni).

  • +9

    No mega-bass. No deal.

    • lol i remember mega bass

      • Mega bass is definitely FULLY ENGAGED on my discman!

  • I'm from a paperless society to a cashless community.

  • dankpods

  • Will this be better than my 25 year old Sony discman i still have and use?

    • +1

Probably not, a well looked after vintage discman would be worth more than what you paid for.

I'm just getting this new one for BT

  • "Simply use the included AUX cable to connect to your car's audio system"
Looks at CD player in 1992 Celica with no aux/usb/bt/etc :O
