  • What neywork do amaysim use? And is the phone network locked?

      Optus, Not Locked

    • +2

      unlocked phone. amaysim uses Optus

  • +1

Damn it, not eligible from my PAYG $10 plan, so it will be $209 all up minimum to get this phone.

    • -1

Once the 28 days is finished you can move to the PAYG plan (365 days) for nothing but you won't have any credit.
Still handy for receiving calls/sms (Gumtree number) if you don't want to add credit.

    • -3

Should be $186 if you go to wollies and get the starter kit for $10 minus $3 worth of points
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/846762

      • That won't work. You need to buy the sim with the phone.

        • really? there's option for existing customer right?, so you buy starter kit -> become existing customer -> buy the phone?

          • @chanhoz: No it doesn't work - existing customers have to renew their existing plan. So after buying the SIM from Woolies it would still cost $179 + $30 for the renewal

  • how many years of comfortable use would the update allow?

    • +2

Not much changes now with these updates. So even if it doesn’t get any more updates, Android 13 will be good for at least 2-3 years. You won’t miss anything as Apps will remain complied with Android 13.

    • Security-patches: it's a mater of what risk-mitigation practices you feel is acceptable to YOUR-preferences, after Moto stop delivering them. Search the internet for suggestions…

  • I have this phone and paid the same price outright, it's a really good phone for the price camera is obviously lacking but I haven't had any issues with it and it hasn't felt slow to me at all. Build quality is nice too if I dropped it I feel like it would survive even in the basic free case you get.

  • +3

Interesting that there's a charger included.

Paying almost 10x for a flagship Samsung or Apple and they include one.

    • Paying almost 10x for a flagship Samsung or Apple and they include one.

You meant they don't include one?

      • oops, yes. No chargers now with flagship phones.

    • -4

      Yeah but they shouldn't.

    • +7

Paying almost 10x for a flagship Samsung or Apple and they don't include one.

The whole point of the EU forcing everyone to standardise their chargers was so you wouldn't NEED a new charger with every device. The charger for one would charge everything else. As well as a convenience feature, it was intended to reduce the number of chargers manufactured, them just thrown out in the ewaste. To save the planet from millions of chargers that were never needed to start with.

Another unneeded generic charger being supplied with this product just frustrates the good intent of that standardisation exercise.

      • +1

Unfortunately all chargers are not the same, that charger you have for your 4 year old flagship phone is not going to charge the latest phone at it's max speed.

It's all about making money and they know that by selling chargers separately they can make more $$$.

      • Absolutely.

      • in 2024* there have been 17 BILLION mobile phones made so far, EACH needing a charger
        * not just this year all up

  • +2

I got my stepdad this phone about 3 months ago for $190.

    pros

    • fast for its price
    • 5G & 8G RAM
    • nice 120hz display (even tho it's LCD)
    • battery life is awesome
    • comes with a charger in the box (rare these days)
    • camera is ok at best, much better at night with gcam

    cons
    - it's not OLED?
    - battery charge speeds are slow at 15W
    - it's just not bright enough outdoors
    - 1 OS update is embarassing
    - again, low light camera performance..but it costs 15% of a flagship

      • Some of the SEA countries are already testing A14 on the G54 i believe. It'll come. Just needs any issues ironed out first.

        • +1

          In NZ shipped with A14

          • @drakakl: Cheers for the heads up. That's good news.

    • Was it marketed as OLED?

      • No, but it is inferior grade cost effective type of IPS screen. The contrast shift is higher than normal and its 120Hz refresh is one of the worst I've ever seen, but for the price I paid, it was still a good deal (I think).

    • 1 OS update is embarassing

      Android14: likely to be delivered.
Moto Customer Support via [email protected]: 'This device is expected to receive Android™ 14, pending partner approval, if that's required. There can be dependencies on carriers and other key partners that will take more time (certifications, independent testing or requests for additional changes). This is why sometimes you will see an upgrade for a device model go to one group of users, but take significantly longer to get to another - even in the same region.'

i don't think it has esim, only dual sim?

    • +1

      It does have esim

    • +1

      It has eSim.

  • Does anyone know where it states that existing plans have to be $30 or more? It mentions T&Cs apply but no direct link.
I'm trying to work it if it's worth taking a punt on the $25 plan that is $11 at Coles from tomorrow.

    • +1

I picked one up and it renewed my $15/mth plan 7 days early.

  • My dad is already on Amaysim on a 365 day plan (200GB).

He's currently using a One Plus 5 which I believe will soon not work once 3G turns off (?)

So I need to help him upgrade. Can I buy this including the $30 sim and simply swap his sim in once it arrives?

What other phones might be good alternatives to replace his one? Happy to up the budget a bit.

    • simply swap his sim in once it arrives

      yes

amaysim also has the Pixel 8 on sale for $749 which is a good flagship option for the price, seven years of updates, camera and performance. amaysim deal ends 30 June so you can wait and see if EOFY sales have any better deals on other phones

    • check out the g84.

      • Key-strength of G84 is the oled-screen…I wonder what's driving oled-preference ?

Not sure if users are willing to pay a-lot for extra-RAM & extra-storage ?

        Past sale-prices of G84 is relatively-poor (vs G54)…but being an-optimist, I'm hopeful for a clearance-price of $200 ish.

I have this a second phone and it’s slow. Can’t complain for the price but I’d recommend getting something faster.

    • it’s slow

Interesting comments…may be users are vast & all come from different reference-points. Nikoris is likely use-to a processor 2+ level above G54 & hence commented as such. For those who're use-to a processor 2- level lower than G54 are likely to say 'it's fast'.

Anyone thinks that chosing a phone is all-science?

    • +2

It's really not that slow. It feels about as quick as my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. I have debloated both though, so no garbage running on mine.

      • -2

What do you mean ‘debloated’? What is this, 2013?

        • +1

It means I remove a bunch of background apps and swap a lot of the first party apps for more lightweight alternatives. It makes a pretty big difference for devices that don't have flagship processors

          • +1

@stephendt: I'm super keen to find out about your approach. Any chance you could share what background apps you got rid of, but more importantly for me are the lightweight apps you substituted?

  • I still haven't opened mine from
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841511

It was a replacement phone for my daughters phone that wasn't working after she droped it and cracked the screen… then it started working again (albe it with a cracked screen)

Still lower with no plan required.

Her last phone was the g82 jb price error honoured…. so far jb have done pretty good deals on phones.

  • Hi
If I use 28 days sim in this phone and after, can I replace a Kogan sim card? will that work or only works for amaysim sims? thanks

    • +1

      it will work

      • thank you. hoping to use it for 1 month and send it to my dad in Sri Lanka. Hope it will work as nowhere it says phone is locked to network

        • +1

There's no need to use the sim in the phone at all. Just make sure auto recharge is turned off.

          • +1

@WatchNerd: I ger it now. thanks for the advice

  • +1

If anyone worrying for the cameras. Dont! (If you can install GCam).
I have a really good setup which was literally minutes of work. It spits out solid photos with Gcam that are actually very comparable with my Pixel 8 Pro(unless it's extreme HDR or lowlight).
Gcam would only help with pictures though.
Rest of the phone is 10/10 for the price I got $150

    • -1

GCam is an ad-plagued garbage camera app.

After it's latest update, it now makes you wait for a 10-second advert to play before it will allow you to take a photo. They also removed basic parts of the app and reintroduced them as $30+ in-app purchases.

It's been a while since I've seen intrusive spam-level advertising like that added to a functioning app.

      • Sorry buddy but you installed a ad-plagued version of Gcam… I have no idea what you're talking about, Gcam is quick and no ads for me.

        • -1

It's a freemium app, there is no ad-free version of it.

Thanks for letting us all know you've never used it before.

          • -1

@infinite: I have installed Gcam to over 100 devices, excuse me but I fully understand what I'm talking about. Where exactly did you obtain the apk?

            • @stephendt:

I have installed Gcam to over 100 devices

              Wut ?

excuse me but I fully understand what I'm talking about. Where exactly did you obtain the apk?

Go straight to the google play store, it's clearly marked as a freemium app with in-app advertisements and in-app purchases.

  • There are suggestions around the interwebs that the G54 will also get A15.

    https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/05/07/motorola-android-15-el…

    • May be give little weight to these write-ups & more to official-publications: see link above?

      • Your link does not conflict with the Gizmochina story.

Let's wait for A14 to roll out widely, and then look further at the possibility of A15.

        • These phones are relatively-cheap & hence expect lower-end software support (vs Pixel)…Motorola has to cut cost somewhere.
          It's NOT the end-of-the-world when software-support ends 🤓

  • Is anyone with an existing account able to purchase this or is it just me having issues? I tried to add an extra service to my account and I just get this error message: https://i.imgur.com/mLSA6TW.jpeg

Tried a different browser and same issue. Not sure what's going on.

    • When the deal was posted, I was able to get through to checkout but didn't have enough funds with existing account (by pressing login) after selecting phone. Next day when I had funds I tried again and got this same error and it only went through if I selected new plan for some reason and not allowing my existing plan option anymore.

    • I'm getting the same error. Definitely site related as I got further in the process yesterday.

  • Assume we can still order this with existing plan, what's the cheapest existing plan (paying renewal fee during checkout) to order with this phone?

  • I can get it on a $15 18GB PLAN

  • I don't see a $15 18GB plan being currently offered so I guess you must have a existing plan with those terms?

Wouldn't the cheapest way to get a G54 under the current Amaysim deal be:

    1. Purchase and activate an Amaysim $10 $10GB 7-day starter kit.

    2. Optionally, turn off auto renewal (not sure if this is possibe with Amaysim).

    3. Purchase the G54 using the existing plan option for $179 plus a $10 charge for the plan renewal. (Unused data is banked)

    4. Within 7 days of renewal use up all data on the plan (10Gb +10GB).

    5. Port out, change Amaysim plans or use the phone with another provider's SIM according to your needs

      1. Purchase and activate an Amaysim $10 $10GB 7-day starter kit.

I can't recall where I saw it (which is annoying the hell out of me), but I believe that the offer for existing customers requires renewal of a monthly (28-day) plan. However, I could be totally mistaken.

      1. Optionally, turn off auto renewal (not sure if this is possibe with Amaysim).

Yes you can disable auto-renew with Amaysim prepaid.
