Well, this was sparked off by a deal here (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84953) stating that the Good Guys will sell this for the Aussie RRP of A$399. We know that the device in the US retails for US$299 meaning that taxes and overheads adds a whopping A$100 to the sticker price in Oz. A previous Google Nexus 7 32GB deal from BH Photo was well received here (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83433).

B&H Photo Video are taking preorders for the device shipping 7 Dec for USD$299 (currently approximately A$290)I believe from past Nexus 7 deals is that delivery to Australia is USD$38.86. That comes down to USD $337.86 delivered, or around AUD $327 (depending on your credit card exchange rate). Still a good deal cheaper than the A$399 are charging. Shipping two units cost US$52.66 making each unit US$325.33 or A$315. Now that's a bargain.

The maximum number of units per person is two. They ship via UPS and delivery to Australia takes 3-5 days. You'll get it before Christmas I reckon. Unless you order too late. BH Photo are selling on a first-come-first-serve basis.

So the next question is: does anyone in Melbourne want to split and order? Please PM me.

PS: Props to OzBargain user @strat who mentioned this in the other Nexus 7 3G deal.

PPS: Who knows, Aussie RRP might end up being $349. If so, this deal isn't so great. :-)

PPPS: Those keen on picking up the Samsung 11.6" Chromebook might consider ordering from BH Photo as well. Preorder and will ship 5 December and currently sold out in the US and UK Google Play stores. Not officially available here. It's a poor man's Macbook Air.

Nice finds! agree is more of a bargain!

I cannot believe Aussie stores want $399.

  • -3

    4G much !!

  • +3

Now what would be australian retailers excuse that the products here are much more expensive? GST only counta for 10%. Plain rip off

    • +2

Not entirely the retailers fault. I think Google decides what pricing should be.

      • +3

America has sales taxes as well, state dependant on how much if any but most do have it. I also doubt that shipping from Thailand/China to Australia is much more if any more expensive then to USA.

Everyone just loves to screw us over.

    • Yeah GST only brings it up to $328.9, not sure where the other $70 comes from

I'd have gotten the Chromebook for $249 if not for that horrible resolution: 1366 x 768. It's a completely web-based device and for that sole consumption purpose, I would've thought that 1920x1080 would've been more suitable.

    • +9

For $249, what do you expect? LOL.

My MB Air and Toshiba Ultrabook have 1366 x 768 screens. :-)

The Chrome device is less for media consumption (I think Netflix has issues in the US) than it is for a simple device to surf, type emails, do some work on the road.

      • -2

Yeah good point. Can't expect much for $249. It's just a little sad that 10" tablets nowadays are getting resolutions of 2560x1600 (Nexus 10) or like the iPad's retina display but this Chromebook has a much lower resolution despite being a brand new product.

        • Lol even brand new Windows 8 entry level Notebooks/laptops even at 15.6" costing 600~700$ comes with same resolution of 1366 X 768. Dont expect even a 1080p screen on a $300 laptop/netbook in next 2 years at least !

  • USD$249 (currently approximately A$290)

Is this supposed to read USD$299?

    • +2

      Yes. Apologies. Has been corrected.

This is the 3G model. If a deal has this many positives, wouldn't you think you misread the title/description?

      • Actually so many on here these days think $1 under non-discount is a bargain, so no I would not trust that.

  • +1

a lil off topic here, does anyone know if you can use the nexus 7 3G to make phone calls just like the Samsung Tab 7.7 3G and Optus Mytab?

    • I don't think so, wtfnodeal. I think it'll be the same business model as Apple's offerings: the 3G is just there for mobile data, and on-the-go internet usage.

      • i susected viber might, and here "MAKE NEXUS 7 A PHONE (INTERNATIONAL)". g00gle that :-)

      • +1

Isn't Android open enough that a custom ROM would enable phone calls? (Since the feature is available on other Jelly Bean devices, unlike on Honeycomb.)

    • I find it odd that you can't make phone calls. A deal breaker for many people. It can take a mic, a SIM card, has 3G, how hard can it be to include the ability to make phone calls?

      • +1

dont really need the dialling feature considering the many voip apps available - skype, mobile voip, viber,

        • Good point but what about making a call to a fixed line e.g. Your grandma's home phone? If Nexus 7 3G is just a bigger Nexus 4 wouldn't it be competing with each others? So more likely Nexus 7 3G doesn't have the dialing function or there is no way to justify why Nexus 4 is smaller but more expensive than Nexus 7 3G.

        • Do you really want to be holding a 7 inch screen to your ear to make a call? its 100% stupid.

        • skype credit and mobile voip credit allows you to do exactly that

        • dont have to hold it to your ear all the time - use the loudspeaker

        • @copie, Heard of loud speakers or earphones with mic?

        • You can always have a VoIP account of course, but VoIP can be pretty unreliable on a 3G network.

        • +1

You could use a BT headset. I'd rather carry around a tablet and a BT headset than a tablet and a separate phone (like I currently do).

    • AFAIK only data and sms but it may just be a matter of time before someone managed to enable mobile phone calls. FYI: it uses micro-SIM.

  • Great price, i got the 8 gigs N7 when it first came out, and that costed 259 dollars around 5 months ago. For little over 300 dollars with 32 gigs and 3G, you can't fault it.

Going to get the 32gb WiFi and use an LTE hotspot device. Much more efficient with coverage, speed, usage, battery life etc.)

    • beatlock, would you mind expanding please on what you mean by "an LTE hotspot device", and where these can be purchased?

      • +1

He means a 4G-enabled smartphone where you turn on a tethering (iPhone 5) or wifi hotspot (Android).

Note however that battery life will drain quite quickly when using it as a hotspot. Meaning you may have to carry yet another device (external battery or extra batteries).

        • Thank you shawn_low :-)

        • +1

nah man refer link below, you cant sustain a smartphone hotspot for that long.

asks friend to borrow phone, secretly sets up wireless hotspot

  • It shouldn't be too long before this version be $300 local.

Unless you are desperate and want it before Xmas.

I will wait til Feb, maybe just before Chinese New Year lol

  • Does anyone know if there will be any compatibility issues with the us model with the 3G networks here is aust?

    • +1

The nexus 7 is a global product, they don't make a different one for each region - which is why they don't make a 4G version. HSDPA is pretty well standardised to a few frequencies all over the world, 4G (LTE) is a mess in this regard.

      • LTE isn't that much messier than 2G or 3G wrt frequencies.

    • It's GSM ie. the 'universal' sim standard. Just pop in a sim card with a data plan and you're good to go.

  • Not a bargain, but I won't neg.

Here's the thing, the nexus7 is great, but who is buying it will use it as a mobile phone? So why get 3G? Data right, but who will buy this but does not already have a data plan on a phone that they could tether? I certainly don't need to run 2 data plans!

IMHO if you for some reason don't have a 3G android/tetherable phone, save the $100, get the 16GB non 3G, and put the money towards a Nexus4 instead.

Nexus7 does have USB/OTG, so easy to use a 64GB flash drive (or multiples) if you really need your entire media collection available. I really think few people need 32GB even when they travel - I never travel far without my ultrabook anyway (used to be netbook).

    • +1

I'm sure my case isn't the norm but I have a spare sim with a data plan that I plan on popping in.

Also, tethering drains battery life double checked quick and is vaguely fiddly yo set up. If it wasn't an option for people why would Apple and Google offer 3g tablets?

    • Well I can't speak for everyone and personal experience makes a very weak argument to be generalized but I switched out my phone for a 7.7 3g to use as a phone and everything else. I don't use it as a phone much, mainly because I primarily text to people. But essentially, my 7.7 is my one and only go to gadget right now.

  • Well, for those interested in getting phone functionality, there are guys on XDA trying to do this.

Already, SMS works with a 3rd party app such as GoPro SMS.
