Yes I know that Nexus 7 32GB available on Google Play Store in Australia, but buying directly means $299 + $19.99 delivery = $318.99. Even if the price is GST included, you can get a legitimate tax invoice from Google and you can claim back the GST amount (as a business, or TRS), it's still $290. Yeah I know it sucks looking at Google Play US store selling it at USD$249.

B&H Photo Video happens to also sell them at USD$249, and they will also do delivery to Australia for USD$38.86 (they have free US shipping — I wonder whether there are cheaper forwarder there). That comes down to USD $287.86 delivered, or around AUD $277.08 (depending on your credit card exchange rate).

I guess we all know the product (Wikipedia Link) — 7" 1280x800, 1GB RAM, 32GB storage, Tegra 3 at 1.3GHz.

Edit: I am sure this tablet will come down in price very soon here as well because of the release of Nexus 10, but ASUS Transformer Pad TF700 WiFi is USD$488 on B&H Photo Video and ~AUD$514 delivered to Australia.

Edit 2: With B&H, additional items are at cheaper delivery charge. So (all in USD)

Count Delivery Charge Overall Cost Unit Cost
1 $38.86 $287.86 $287.86
2 $52.06 $550.06 $275.03

Too bad the maximum per transaction is 2. But if you buy 2, each would be USD$275.03 ~AUD$265.

Great Price. Have only ever had good experiences with BHPhotoVideo too. Hopefully they will undercut the Nexus 4 too :)

    • Be bloody good if they could undercut on the Nexus 4. I love the look of that phone but the $50 Aussie markup chafes me somewhat. Even not paying the postage would get me across the line.

      • -3

have a sook mate go buy the old nexus then

      • That it isn't actually a $50 Australia tax is irrelevant to those wanting to whinge about it.

      • erm.. you know US prices at ex tax. take 10% off the Aus price and youll end up at about the same figure.

        • +1

As I've already stated in my post — Google Play AU price + $20 delivery takes away 1/11 GST amount, and it's still more expensive than B&H with $38 international delivery.

  • is the nexus 4 google play exclusive? cause you could do the same thing technically if third party carriers stocked it (or buy from google play US and send to forwarder and pay using 28 degrees mastercard for awesome win)

    • also i should mention that if you bundle with an ssd its the same shipping cost

  • thanks for posting. do they ship direct to AUS or do we need forwarding? sorry, at work and dont have time to peruse the details

    • +1

B&H Photo Video sends directly to AUS. I was just wondering whether there are forwarding company that can do cheaper. However getting B&H to deliver would be hassle free.

    • +1

from when I last used them (12 months ago), they did direct mail. They even mailed me a physical catalogue once a year about the size of a "Home Innovations" catalogue until I opted out of it.

    • +1

I got a TF101 shipped from them direct last year. No complaints. Asus warranties are usually global too, unlike Samsung.

  • If they ship from NY, I wonder if Sandy will be causing any delivery delays?

    • "Please take note: Due to Hurricane Sandy the carriers are not operating today, you might expect a short delay in receiving your order. By tomorrow October 31st, everything should be back to normal"

      • Sandy or not, they shut down the online store (peruse but cannot order) for one day a week, the owners being Orthodox Jews and therefore observing Shabbath. So anyone in a real hurry should order before Friday EOB (NY time)

        • -1

IMO that's ridiculous… religion shouldn't interfere with business, and vice versa.

  • +2

BH Photo Video is amazing. If you've ever visited their shopfront in Manhattan, it's a geek's dream come true.

    • -7

I've always wondered, why do so many jewish people work there?

I love their series of conveyor belts to send items around the shop so you don't have to carry them.

      • +2

lol you guys are so touchy
seriously if you go there, 90% of the staff are jewish. I am just curious as to why that's the case.

        • It could be the owner is jewish.

        • Good to know. Thanks.

Does the NEXUS 7 have international warranty?

    • +1

I'd like to know this too. I mean if we do have a problem with the product who do we go to and how do we get it fixed? Do they have a physical store like Apple or is it over the net?

The Nexus 7 is manufactured by ASUSTeK Computer Inc. ASUS provides a limited 12 month warranty for the Nexus 7. Please refer to the warranty card in the Nexus 7 packaging or review ASUS' limited warranty details.

        • If your Nexus 7 was purchased from Google Play, please contact Google customer support for service on the ASUS limited 12 month warranty.
        • If your Nexus 7 wasn't purchased from Google Play or you're looking for out of warranty repair service, please contact ASUS directly.
      • +2

This deal is from B&H Photo Video. They have a physical store in New York but none in Australia. Having said that, Asus offer global warranties on most (or all) of their stuff. Contact Asus Australia and ask if they offer warranty support for a tablet from the US. They probably do for this, and certainly do for the Transformer tablet that I have.

        • Thanks! So then we'd have to either go to ASUS or send it to ASUS to get it fixed?
I haven't really had any good experiences with ASUS laptops and netbooks. I had to wait 3 months to get my netbook fixed, only to be told they weren't continuing the model. So I was given an updated model. Not really worth the 3month wait though.

That being said, has anyone had any problems with the nexus 7?

  • comes with US plug?

    • +1

Yes. But it's USB charging anyway, most people have plenty.

      • +5

USB charging via pc is painfully slow.

Charging through powersocket is much faster. Something to keep mindful of.

        • Many motherboards have a fancy high powered USB port that can offer 3* more current right? Might help

      • Bare in mind that not all Micro USB cords will charge it. I have experienced this myself, have also read this in various reviews.

My logitech g930 micro USB doesnt charge it, but the cord that comes in the box will be fine (suprisingly enough!)

The charging plug comes in 3 components, a local adaptor, the charger itself, and a USB cord you plug into the charger, so you will really get a versatile USB cord. As per 'zomg' said though, charging via a USB port is ridiculously slow.

        • +1

It depends on the USB cord's wire gauge, some cheaper ones have thinner wires that don't carry as much voltage.

    • just buy one from ebay, less than $2.

  • Hmm tempting but ill wait for that nexus 10

    • Two different tablets for different audiences. People dont buy a 7" tablet because they cant afford the 10". I bought mine because I take it everywhere and read it everywhere. holding up a 10" tablet all day would get a tad uncomfortable.

        retinnaaaa displayyyyy +

  • +1

I paid more than that for my 16gb one :p

    Great price.

  • +3

For people interested : 16 GB is $267 at Harveys
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-nexus-7-tablet.html

  • Gotta be some cheap 16gb deals soon.

  • Where can i get this instore

    • You cannot, yet.

  • hot damn that's a good price, I was happy with ~$300 for my Nexus 7 16gb on day of release a couple months ago …the price of being an early adopter I guess

  • Nexus 7 or 10? Questions, questions.

  • Apologies for asking here but just double checking but there is no difference between the old 16gb and the new 32gb besides hard drive size right? Like both have internals the same and running the same version of Android software etc?

    • exactly the same besides capacity

  • any 3G model?

    • +1

      Announced but not released

  • Nexus 10, maybe expensive but so much better.

    • It may be, but at around twice the price it's in a different league really. The screen seems like it will be incredible though :P

      • don't forget twice the weight as well! makes a big difference if you hold it for a long time.

  • -1

Does anybody know when we can expect to see these in stores?

  • +1

I only have a desktop PC, a laptop, an ultrabook, two smart-phones and a tablet. I think I will have to buy this…..sigh.

    • Can you use them all?

    • +1

how many hands do you have :)

  • I need one just for web browsing and this is small enough to throw in my hand bag. Should I get a 16G or 32G ?

I am sorry if this question sound stupid for those who are 'IT literate' if I am at a non Wifi location can I just buy a pocket wifi to access the internet ?

    • Yes

    • +1

Save your $50 and get the 16GB one from Officeworks.

    • yes pocket wifi but then you might as well wait for the nexus 7 with 3G. It'll save you money in the long run.

get 16gb if you just want to browse. or better yet just get a cheaper ainol tablet.

  • Officeworks online price is $268 and have no stock, but you might find stock depending on officework. Jbhifi will come down to $249.

    • Those are 16GB, this is 32GB.

  • Just calculated and realised that iPad Mini (32GB) is $180 more (before postage). Wow!

Really show how much more value (from a purely hardware perspective) the Nexus is!

    • I think it's just different strategies from two different companies.

      • With Google, they make money when you use the device.
      • With Apple, they make money when you buy the device.

Although for those bargain-minded people, i.e. those of us on this website, it's not hard to see which one is more attractive.

      • +2

With Apple, they make money when you buy the device + when you use the device.

      • It can be extended to apps:

        • Google encourage free apps, because they have even more people using the AdService, hence more ad revenue.
        • Apple take a cut (~30%, IIRC) of the initial app cost, so they'd prefer higher app purchase costs.

Hence, more free apps on the Play Store :-)

  • Naive question, but they'll only ship this from the 13th right ?

    • Indeed, they should only ship this after the 13th… unless they break the embargo and risk the wrath of Google.
Edit: actually, it looks like the Google Play store is taking orders, unlike the N10, so maybe not.

      • Yes, it does say 'in stock' now on the Play store! Although, why doesn't the B & H one say 4.2 ?

        • It's the 3G model that's not available until the 13th.

  • Anyone knows of OW will price beat when they start to stock 32gb model?

  • Good Guys are advertising the Nexus 7 16GB for $249
Just picked one up in Frankston VIC. The shelf price still showed $319. The nice sales rep gave me cash price for $244 - best price by far.
Saw a 5 day clearance sign on the when leaving the store.

  • +1

Purchased two Nexus 7 32GB from B&H Photo Video on 1/11, AUD$532 all up. Shipped email received 2/11. Delivery ETA 8/11 to Melbourne. Surprised at how fast they shipped them considering the storm.

    • UPS delivered my two Nexus 7 32GBs this morning, 7/11. Bought Thursday evening, delivered Weds morning. If it wasn't for Melbourne Cup Day it would've been delivered yesterday. Good stuff.

  • Price drop to $244.95 :)

    • yeah, $5 drop ;)
