NORTON Security 2013 3 User + 5GB Online Back up. Outlay $34.90 and Then Get $40 Cashback

1260

Ok, so here is my first post on this site. So hope everyone enjoys it as I know we all like to get a bargain.

Here is a deal whereby you can obtain Norton Antivirus at DSE for $34.90 with shipping and then claim a $40.00 rebate from Norton. Therefore obtaining Norton Anti Virus for free and having enough change to get a free lunch.

http://au.norton.com/now/en/AU_SITE/pu/images/Promotions/201…

Who ever said there is no such thing as a free lunch??

You could also get office works to price match if you wish to pick up in store and get an extra 5% discount.

Unsure why it is this cheap, perhaps a mistake given this is $98 at most places.

Enjoy

      And good first post OP!

  • +68

Even for -$5.10, Norton is overpriced…

    • Any recommendations for an Anti-Virus that actually works then? Although it pains me I am willing to pay LOL

      • +13

        MSE - Free
Together with the running of Malware bytes every so often and using ad block and mywot you should be safe.

      • Emsisoft is very good and a reasonable price if you get 3 years worth. I'm a computer tech and always use it to clean up after others. Malwarebytes is good as a second antivirus that you just run occasionally (because you can choose not to have it run actively all the time).

    • +1

      Just don't install it.

    • +9

I prefer McAfee. Its got a killer interface.

      • +3

        Kills the computer?

      • He was only wanted for questioning

      • +7

        Allegedly

  • +10

In b4 "wouldn't take it even if they payed me"

    edit: too fast jv

    • +17

JV usually gets in there much quicker than the average OBer. He has an alarm that goes off every time a deal is not good value.

      • He came very quickly to the condom deal

  • Take it, get your free lunch then delete it lol

  • Use disc as Frisbee for the kids?

    • +1

      That's the Christmas shopping done!

  • +3

Not seeing any terms regarding ammount you can claim. Looks like someone's paying their bills this month.

  • +2

Nice, paid $33.16 after using my Wish Card @5%off :). Thanks OP.

  • +3

The backup 5GB is so you can backup your computer in the event that Norton fails to detect a virus that destroys your computer, which maybe likely…

    • +3

or maybe backup the virus in case you has clean them by mistake.

    • 5GB is unfortunately not enough to even backup Windows, unless you're using a lightened version of Windows XP.

Still, is that 5GB perpetually yours to use or does it expire after the license is over?

      • +1

Why would you want to back uo windows? Its easy to reinstall, unlike documents encrypted/deleted by malware/viruses.

  • So I'm assuming this takes details relating to your computer with the registration? So you cant just install on the same computer with different serials? $10 profit is nothing to scoff at…

nvm theres no pick up option

    • +1

Order over 4 ($100) and there's free shipping!

From memory you can enter multiple activations it will just add to the # of years. If not, you can always call the support and have them move the subscription. I've done that before ;)

  • Can someone please get a job there so I can use your staff card? It's not a big ask from a fellow OBer. :P

  • +4

Obviously a fabulous deal but after having serious computer problems, a free trial of Malwarebytes picked up & fixed 18 trojans on my computer. After being on my computer for a year I now realise Norton sucks :(

    • Wow, I usually use MSE since its lightweight and I also run hijack this every so often and malware bytes picked up nothing. Pretty sad that free beats paid. :P

      • Well free beats free in fact… we actually got Nortons for free with a laptop which was subsequently returned & refunded in full 8 months later after a lot of complaining ;P
I would prefer something that actually works as I download a fair bit…

    • +2

Microsoft Security Essentials is probably the best free and low profile virus detector.
      Malwarebyes helps too.
      Norton, um…. no thanks.

    • +1

If anyone does get hard to remove malware on their PC, I can't recommend combofix highly enough. Cleaned out an infested system where other anti trojan/malware/etc software failed.

    • +2

This one comes with online backup and is cheaper.

    • One is Cat#: XS1409WEB (web offer) NORTON I Security 2013 3U+NOBU includes 5GB N.Online Back Up $29.95
      Other is Cat#: XS1409 NORTON I Security 2013 3U+NOBU $89.95

  • Its same same but different.. only due to the price tag

  • MSE is all you need.

    • +4

I disagree. You still need common sense, and the ability to fight the urge to click on pop-up windows telling you Jasmine wants to chat to you naked.

  • +1

The rebate said 'retail packs' only - not too sure if this cat # will be eligible.

Ordered 4x anyway of that NIS 2013+nobu at $29.95 to get the free shipping.

    • I'm pretty sure it will work since retail means a physical box vs a digital download.

EDIT: If not then they are being a bit sketchy with the details. ACCC is looking good.

    • Have fun installing all 4 to get the cashback!

      • +1

Just need to activate all 4, will contact support to move all subscription to the one key to extend it for a massive 4 years! Hopefully by then we're over 'anti-this&that' and the internet is a peaceful place…NOT.

        • Are you going to install one box for each terminal or all 4 in one? Never used norton so i wouldn't know how their registering works. Plus i only have 6 computers at home… 6 isn't enough for a new hard drive :/

        • I remember entering it into a window (could be product or on their account website) which extended an existing license i had on just one machine so it is definitely possible.

        • Oooh ok. So by registering 2 serials in one computer, you'll effectively just increase the subscription and still get 2 cashbacks. Btw do you know if this is sent by mail or electronic?

        • Its via the mail

        • sweet, just ordered 5.

    • I will be returning them unopened if they are NOT retail packs.

      • but I think you will have to pay the shipping

      • -2

My comment was insensitive and I would like to retract it. Sorry about that.

    • Terms & Conditions Clause No.08
Multiple claims cannot be made for a single valid purchase.

      • What does this mean exactly? Does it mean I need to have a seperate reciept for each product I buy? E.g. I buy 5 on one reciept, does that mean I can't submit multiple claims with the same reciept?

  • +22

They are definitely retail packs. I have already purchased and redeemed cashback prior to posting the deal. This was to ensure it was a guaranteed deal prior to posting it up.

    ENJOY

    • -1

NOW that is a true OB. I give you 1000 internetz.

    • Wow i feel so looked after, now THAT is customer service. Brick and mortar retailers, take notes!

    • +1

how long does it take? directly credit to your bank account?

  • Just bought 1 to try.
Is it only for 1 year?

  • Am I missing something? Its 3 users but for 1 year or 3? I can't find that info. Just says its the software for 3 users.

    • 3 Users for 1 year

      • +1

Better explanation is one activation key, for use on 3 different machines, for one year from the first acctivation. Not too sure how they detect 'different machine' tho.

        • You have to have an online account now…

I have used NIS for years. There probably is something better out there.

  • +2

    If i buy 10 then i get $51. Buy 100 = $510. Hmm maybe buy a million!

    • +5

      Stop Broden.

    • +1

Even better… If you buy 4+ its free shipping, so 10 makes $100.50!
You have to install & activate to claim cashback. (I can't be bothered.)

  • "Every valid claim will receive a $40 rebate in the form of a cheque. Claimants should allow 6-10 weeks from receipt of their claim by Symantec for delivery of their rebate cheque by post. "

I wonder if Norton thought this cash back through. They're losing money on every sale unless the rebate cheques mysteriously start 'disappearing' in the mail.

    • They are losing a bit but many people like my Dad will just repurchase Norton when he gets the warning to renew. They then make a heap off those people. I have told my dad that Norton sucks and now he uses MSE. :P

    • +2

I think it will be DSE losing money… Everyone else is selling this product for $99 less $40 cashback

      • This way everyone would be buying from DSE and no other retailers. DSE wins. Don't think they would be losing money.

  • +2

If its promotional they can get their own rebate through tax. Nobody is losing money…

    • I guess we will soon see, Depending on how many hits this gets, wonder if it is a mistake, will they cancel orders.

      Lets just wait and see

      • The orders have to be honored. I think its a mistake. I'd get in there & make some purchases quickly. Its gotta be the best deal I have seen on ozbargain lol. Buy up a bunch & sell em on eBay to make more money. You just have to sell the serial numbers. Easy transaction!

        • sure, but have to open all packages ,activate them to get the rebate, and sell the key on ebay that only valid for 11 months xx days…

          Offer clause #9
To claim the Offer online from Symantec, the claimant must first install and activate their purchased Norton product with Symantec after 6:30am AEDT on 22 October, 2012 and before 11:59pm AWST 3 January, 2012 to enable automatic validation of their claim. The claimant must then visit the www.norton.com/anz/cashbacks site, and follow the instructions to enter a claim via the Symantec Online Redemption Centre. Online claims will be accepted until 11:59pm AWST on 3 January, 2012.

        • Ok, fair enough. You couldn't claim but could still mark it up & sell the keys.

        • why would this stop you? sell it quickly, wait say a week, your ebay buyer would have activated for you and you make the claim then.

        • after 6:30am AEDT on 22 October, 2012 and before 11:59pm AWST 3 January, 2012

does anyone else see a problem here?

          obvious typo, but c'mon!!

  • +1

Don't think everybody buying this has 3 PCs to install at the same time, maybe we can start a "OzB Norton Givaway"?

Very excited for the deal. Thought about it but only have a PC myself, since it's free, I'm sure some OzBs will have some left over to spare, yah?!

  • +1

We've finally discovered what Norton will do to get people to use their crappy software. They'll pay you to install it. This is OzBargain win.

  • +2

    Avast! nuf said

  • +7

This is proof that you couldn't even pay OZBARGAINERS of all people to use Norton.

  • I'm new with this stuff
How would they send the cash back money?
Is it by cheque or online?

    • cheque… Dick Smith is still a bricks and mortars at heart.

  • +4

Why are people getting excited about this? You outlay your money, then have to wait over 2 months for a $5 profit? Not interested.

    • You do also get an antivirus product for a year… And what sort of Ozbargainer are you? A profit is a profit. :S

    • +6

It represents a 14.6% return on investment in just two months. If you have anything better I would be interested in subscribing to your newsletter

      • +2

Very true, but my ing direct deal I posted was a much higher ROI. :D

      • +3

Ozbargain mentality — a profit is a profit, no matter how meager it is.

  • Dumb question (lack of experience buying software) but is norton for Mac applicable for this discount. Also does dick smith sell the mac version? I don't have a cd drive in my MacBook Air so hopefully I can download a driver

    • -5

Not a dumb question but here's a question back for you? Why do you want Norton for Mac?

Having run Macs since the late 1980s, I can safely say I have never had a problem which required anti-virus software. Yes, there are a couple of malwares which have been created for the Mac and given the installed user base now, more will be created in the future. But I will personally wait until this is more of a problem before I look at software which will slow down my Mac, which has been my experience with the Windows Norton products I have used over the years.

Some people with Macs who share documents they have received from Windows users with other Windows users use an anti-virus product as a prudent method of not relaying those viruses. If that is why you are interested, do a Google search and you'll find there are quite a few good and free products out there for the Mac. Just read a few articles to make an informed decision.

The other steps you can take are keeping your OS up to date, buying apps through the App Store on your Mac. Primarily malware protection and identity theft and the like are more likely to be a problem from social engineering, where an email from a trusted source like a friend whose computer has been infected sends you a link to something to download and because you trust them, you download it, open it, install it, etc. Or other emails claiming to be from your bank which look real but actually send you to a dummy site to collect your data. There are products you can use to protect yourself, the best one being your brain. Look to see what any link is before clicking on it by hovering over the top of it. If it says suncorp.heeheehacketimexyz035823580.org then don't open it. If your "bank" or other financial institution is sending you an email, call them to confirm.

You could also use OPENDNS if you have a static IP address, 1Password which will only allow you to enter your password if the site is valid and a whole bunch of other good ideas are out there.

I'm not saying you don't need malware / anti-virus protection on a Mac, but just there are free and inexpensive alternatives out there if you have a look.

EDIT : Also before investing in anti-virus software on the off chance you get one, I would suggest setting up your backup strategy first to protect your data in case of an incident. I suggest a dual backup regime which can be automated and use a single external hard drive; Time Machine and SuperDuper. Have a read why it is a good idea to have both installed.

Yes, there are reasons to keep data secure at an off-site location too, such as on the cloud or an external hard drive located at another physical location, but this would be a good start. Hopefully in time Apple will beef up its iCloud product to be a bit more DropBox like. It would be nice if we could just use our computers without having to worry about all this, but such if modern life.

  • According to google cache they have been selling at that price since 9/11/2012.

After Woolworth sold(gave away) Dicksmith anything is now possible.

    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:tjlLXBK…

  • haven't woolworths sold dick smith? i can still get my staff discount :)

    • yes they did, u can get discount any more

  • Waste of money. Great the Win 8 finally has built in protection. You don't need anything else.

    • +5

      Waste of -$5.10, eh?
