I got one of these 6 months ago for $399. No free AC3 though. But prices have dropped since $499. You sure this isn't a typo?

    • 4GB or 2GB?

      • According to DXdiag I have 4GB on my card.

However, I'll retract and grant that $499 is a lower price than what's going around (PCCG is $509).

I think that's expensive though. I'd rather get a 680 for these prices. If the only difference is 2GB… I have seen 680s go for cheaper than this.

      This is the 4GB Edition

      • I missed the 4GB bit on my first read of it for some reason, just didn't jump out.

  • Given a 2GB GTX680 can be had for cheaper, would the extra 2GB of ram really make this worthwhile over a more powerful GPU?

    • 4GB is overkill. It will only be used in super high resolutions > 1080p. Or maybe if you have a 120hz screen with 3D.

    • I was wondering what kind of insane resolutions and texture sizes would need 4GB. Seems a bit over the top for the moment but I'm sure we'll need it down the track by which time todays cards will be doorstops or landfill.

      • You would need a 30"+ monitor. 2160p or 1600p like the Nexus 10 does. Basically a 4K display.

Or a 120hz monitor, and going for 120 fps.

Or a 3D monitor which has to render each frame twice.

Maybe the RAM will still be overkill.

        • Curious as to why you got the 4GB version?

        • +1

I wasn't specifically looking for it, but I just saw it on Amazon for a good price, so I had it delivered. They don't deliver to Melb, so I had to use Borderlinx to forward it to me, but I had a $40 off Borderlinx coupon from AMEX, which meant I only paid the surcharge which was about $7. Basically paid $7 for shipping from Amazon to Melb.

Now, if it dies on me, I'm not sure how I will do warranty…

I knock on wood twice a day.

    • If you like to use mods which use super-high-resolution textures it would be useful.

Personally I think the 7970 3gb (Stock / low end for ~$400, fancier models for $450) offers better value in most uses at this price

  • I wonder if you can SLI a 2GB Gigabyte gtx670 windforce with this 4GB version (placing the 4GB version as the primary card first)?

    • You would not benefit from the extra memory, making this rather silly

    • The way I understand it when using SLI the memory contents need to be mirrored in the storage of each card, meaning you still have effectively 2gb memory overall capped by the smaller card (assuming mixing 2gb and 4gb versions even works, I don't know).

  • +1

Gigabyte GTX580 in SLI for $400 (+ shipping) = nice. Oh and faster than the 670 for $499 (+ shipping) if your PC can handle two GTX580's (power, size & heat).

    • +1

Wow, that is nice! That would be some amazing power if as you say your rig could handle it :)

    • I was going to ask this as well
      is 2x580 better than 1 670/680?

They consume more power i assume tho

is it worth upgradeing from Gtx 295 to this setup?

any features in the kepler cards over the 5xx series? besides power consumption?

      • I have 2 x 580s, a couple of 670s, 680s and a 295.

580s use over 100 watts more than a 680 each. So there is a considerable difference. GTX 295 sits halfway in between a 580 and 680 in power usage. No DX11 support for GTX 295 and its basically just plain old now.

2 x GTX 580 is around 20% better than a 680 in 3DMark11. But the power consumption would be very high requiring something like a decent 850W PSU realistically. Its idle power is also around 30 watts higher per card over the 680 and since you have two of them it makes it even worse. And then of course SLI might have its own issues in games.

Anyway, its not a clear-cut win one way or another.. it depends on what're doing with it, how much you tolerate noise, power usage, etc.

        • So from what you are saying, if 1 580 was half the price of a 680

And you ran 580 in sli vs 1 x 680 to compare like for like

Then for the same money, you would be paying more in power usage for the SLI setup but gain 20%

Since currently a 680 is a bit more in cost. you would be actually paying more to get 20% less performance against a 580 SLI, but you would be saving 100watts in power

That being said, if i wanted to upgrade from 295 to the most powerful setup i can get for this price while maintaining power consumption, then i would actually be better off getting the 580 SLI
Since you said that 295 sits between 580 sli and 680 in power usage. and a 580 SLI will have more power than 295 or 680

Meaning with a 580 SLI setup i would be paying less than a 680, and be using less power than i am now (but more than a 680) and get 20% better performance than a 680

If the above assumptions hold, then i would only get a 680 if the power saving offsets greater than the cost difference of the 680 to the 580 sli setup by more than 20% (to offset the performance as well)

        • +2

Thats 100 watts saving PER CARD at 3DMark11 load. So 100 Watt saving for 1st card plus around 300 watts for the 2nd for a total of 400 watts. Of course these are peak 3DMark11 load so in average it'd be much less. Especially if you're mostly idling doing browsing, etc as most people do.

Also forgot to mention that these Watts are at the wall so already accounts for PSU inefficiency.

And I said that GTX 295 sits halfway between a single GTX 580 and a single GTX 680.

          And for actual numbers..

          GTX 580 SLI peak = 725 watts
          GTX 680 peak = 325 watts
          GTX 295 peak = 400 watts

          GTX 580 SLI idle = 135 watts
          GTX 680 idle = 80 watts
          GTX 295 idle = 120 watts

Also don't forget that just because the 580 SLI benches 20% better in 3DMark11, it doesn't mean in actual gameplay its actually better due to SLI complications. Mind you I spend surprisingly little time in games despite all my equipment, so I can't comment too much on this :)

        • thanks for the detailed comment

Looks like ill pick up a 680 because it blows the 295 out of the water, and is comparible to 580 sli will using less power than my 295

alternatively i could wait for a gtx 780 lolz

    • Thats a fantastic price. Gigabyte GTX 580s go for around $230 each secondhand nowadays (too much, I think given GTX 660 is the same price new, but people are paying that) . I'd suspect its a misprice.

      • Not a misprice.. price will be $199 until sold out or end of the month (30th November)..

    Assassin's Creed 3. Not Assassin's 3. ;)

    • The OP couldn't fit the full 'Assassin's Creed 3' in the title, due to the character cap. Though 'AC3' probably would've sufficed.

      • +1

They had it as Assassins 3 in the description also. But after I commented, they fixed it.
