      • Retroarch….appl that is installed from the app store. N64 is the only issue.

      • you can sideload android apps on the device and run emulators etc

  • Has anyone managed to run Steam Link or similar on their 4k Firestick or Max?

    • Well xbox live is now available in the appstore (hence this deal, perhaps) -see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6j-XHXzTIc.

I'm fairly sure I've seen people run Moonlight client on them to connect to gaming rigs running Sunshine server.

    • Yes, install the apk from apkmirror via the Downloader app.

  • Can you still run developer mode on the new 4K Max?

    • Yes

      • That is good, Thanks.

  • anyway to get 1st app discount but having used the app before? also, can someone please confirm that you can still side-load Stremio on 4k Max?

  • Can anyone explain why we need this instead of the smart TV features we have with those new TVs?

I got a 2007 Samsung smart TV but maybe the ram is too small and the apps runs very slow now, does this fire stick helps or?

    • +2

These sticks help with TVs that are slow.

    • +1

My mum has one on her old tv.
I carry one with me when I travel so I can plug it into the tv and not have to login to each and every one of my apps (and then remember to log them out) as well as to compensate for old TV's which dont have any support.

    • Unless you have a newish Samsung TV, you need this to use Xbox Cloud Gaming.

    • Still way better than a smart TV, and can install apps etc. They were fully customisable, but Amazon has removed ADB access with more recent updates and some claim they may stop third party apps.

      • -1

        Can't sideload Stremio app anymore?

        • Currently all apps work by sideloading, but theres talk they may remove that which would render the devices obsolete in My opinion as I don't use the paid streaming services. I try to block updates as much as I can, but seems like an update just installed when I left mine on. it still works currently though.

  • Definitely worth the upgrade from the other versions. The main issues with FireTV is the boot loop issues which seem to be caused by lack of storage in the earlier versions. I have had it happen 3 times and amazon are very good with dealing with it. The second issue though is amazon's forced updates which can disable or cripple things. Its very hard to block updates. I had my firetvs fully customised, updates blocked, just using for iptv and kodi, and the updates disabled that customisation by disabling adb and no way to enable again.
Amazon also have the ability to remotely disable devices which is a bit concerning, which recently happened to My recently replaced firetv after they refunded me as agreed to

They would be the perfect devices if it wasnt for the Amazon over control..

    • wouldnt Chromecast with Google Tv be a better option then?

      • I don't know much about google TV, but I will look into it. I just don't like the forced updates with firetv. I don't know what google does and if its friendly for installing custom apps, launchers etc.

        • +1

Forced upgrade is something not very nice with the firetv stick.

          • @JieZ: Yes, and not knowing future plans. Already people saying some apps are being disabled. So I might find another alternative and not bother. Still a fairly good deal.

    • Crazy isn't it.. What proportion of their users are going the DIY route that they go to the trouble of disabling adb? Happily though my Fire TV lite is safe from forced updates after swapping it to Lineage OS

  • The 4K Max(amazon.com.au) can be reduced $10 further to $49 for first app purchases using the code FIRST10

I've never used the Amazon app before. I was looking at the 4K Max this morning and noticed that they were now offering $20 off for first-time app users, so I was able to buy one for $39 using the FIRST20 code.

Not paying $59 for the max, $49 yes but not $59

If my memory serves me correct, prices of these are cheapest on last day or prime, HOLD YOUR HORSES.

Has anybody used one of these devices which allow a fire stick to be used without an AC adapter? Any idea if it works properly? My TV is mounted and is not close to a power outlet.

    • +3

i have the 4k max and you can plug the provided cable into any USB ports on the TV and it works.

    • +1

My 4k max works via a TV USB port but warns you the power may be insufficient for updating OS

There are reports that Game Pass doesn’t work with the Fire Stick in Australia. Can anyone confirm?

  • Anyone else look at this and think, I wish I could get the Onn 4K Pro in Aus?

  • +1

    This looks cool.
    Questions as a noobie:

    1) can I sideload any android app?
    2) can I sideload streaming apps?
    3) can I play Xbox pass with no console?
    4) can I install adblockers?
    5) can I install retro game emulation and use Bluetooth controllers?

  • My 2015 Nvidia Shield is still chugging along after 8 years of solid use - are these Fire Sticks worth an upgrade?

    • +2

If it still works fine and you're happy with it - no.

      • If it’s not broken keep using it it’s still the beast in streaming

Does anyone know if the native Stremio app runs better on an LG TV (LG CX) than the sideloaded version on a 4K Max? Mainly want to use Stremio with RealDebrid. Thanks!

    • +1

Stremio works really well on my CX.

      • Better than Fire Stick?

        • +1

They work the same way. I also have a Fire Stick 4K Max. No difference. LG CX has no lag or glitches. Just works 100% of the time.

          • +1

            @Lucille Bluth: Cheers :)

          • @Lucille Bluth: I just set up Stremio + Torrentio + RD, and let me just say it works beautifully :D Even with my slow connection (25mbps), it streams 30-40GB DV files almost instantly, slight buffer at the start but that only lasts a few seconds. I'm glad I didn't buy the 4K Max.

            • @koalafied: Picked up the 4K Max yesterday from JB Hifi. Had the same price and I could get gift cards at a greater discount than Amazon gift cards. Side loaded Stremio + Torrentio + RD. For the $20 difference I figured it was worth it.

Also, if you plug it into the HDMI ARC port, it can control your TV too. I have an old Samsung 2012 smart TV. Turns the TV on and off with the Firestick remote, change volume etc.

  • Anyone know if it's better to have one version over another for Xbox game cloud? I have Chromecast for everything else. Cheers!

  • I want something I can travel with pug a USB thumb drive or external SSD and watch stuff via Kodi and that's about it. Will one of these do this Do I jst need a HDMI cable to plug into the TV. I don't really care about streaming but I guess support for Amazon Prime would be ok, ? Mostly 1080p stuff

  • Can someone recommend me an ethernet adaptor to go with firestick lite? Was hoping for a generic cheaper one but the current $23 deal on the Amazon version isn't too bad .

  • Price is same at JBHifi, If we buy there, can we still get one month Game Pass Ultimate ?

  • Can you "Chromecast" to this?

    • Yes, you can! When you open a Chromecast enabled app, you'll see a cast icon. Press that icon, you'll see your FireStick listed. Click on it and the app content will now be cast on to the FireStick. From Goggle

      • +1

This is not correct. I have 2 of these firesticks. It doesn't have native Chromecast. Can't cast direct from Stremio, Cinema HQ, Cyberflix etc. You can use Screen mirroring as a workaround for these. Casting does work for some apps e.g. YouTube, Netflix etc but it's really not the same Chromecast experience.

  • +1

I purchased the fire stick and have no use for the 1-month subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. If anyone who like the code, please pm me. Only valid for new Xbox Game Pass members.

  • 15 August is the earliest delivery time for the 4K Max, seems wild imo

    • Thanks for pointing it out. I was hoping to get it before the Olympics. The 4K has faster delivery though. Is the 4K much worse than the 4K max? I just need a casting device for my new dumb Soniq tv.

      • +1

The 4K Max has a faster chipset, resulting in better overall performance, and it comes with an enhanced remote. Chromecast is pretty good too if you just need it for casting

        • Thanks. Might just buy both and return the 4K after the max arrives then.

Yeah I prefer chrome cast 4K actually but missed out on previous deals. Just happens the fire stick is on sale now.

          • +1

@Jared17: No probs. I believe the 4K Max will drop further in price at midnight or early tomorrow morning, just like it did during last Prime. Amazon can credit the price difference via live chat.

            • +1

@koalafied: Cheers. I haven’t pulled the trigger. In that case I’ll wait haha

            • @koalafied: Doesnt seem to have dropped yet. And it will be over soon.

  • +1

If they didnt push out these forced updates, FireTV would be a clear winner on features, price and specs. 4kMax has plenty of storage, but each update takes away more ways of customising it. Decided to not buy one again due to these issues, plus I believe these forced updates are causing bootloops sometimes. This is coming from a long time fan of these devices.
