9kg Gas Bottle $24.99 at Aldi Saturday

520

As stated in title - at around $25 this is by far the cheapest I can remember seeing them in a very long time. I have no idea about the quality of them but they would have to comply with safety standards. For those likely to want to do the swap and go type thing, this is by far the cheapest way of buying into the scheme (as opposed to buying a filled bottle through them.)

Ever been in the middle of a bbq and run out of gas? You can be sure this will never happen again by having a second (filled) bottle on hand. In true ozbargain style, this means you don't actually have to fill the bottle before it runs empty "just in case."

For the creative souls out there who look for gas bottles to cut up for bbqs, outdoor fireplaces etc, here's a chance to get one fairly cheaply that has never had gas in it to have to worry about sparks etc when cutting. (if you have no idea what I am talking about but feel the need to know, check out ozpig)

  • Then go to Masters as they have $20 swap and go's.

    • +1

$20 is most likely the swap price, you still need a cylinder to give them in exchange. Masters website lists a 9kg LPG cylinder for $30.

    • Link?

  • Thinking to buy this for spare.
Does anyone knows how long can we keep unused gas bottle (as spare)?

    • +2

From what I can remember you can keep a gas bottle for 10 years from the date of manufacture which is stamped on the collar of the bottle.

  • Do they come full or empty?

    • Empty- still have to pay to get it filled.

      • How much does it cost to get a 9kg bottle filled these days?

        • +1

          ~ 18 bucks

        • +1

It depends where you go. I've seen the cheapest $17.99 to the dearest $28.95

        • +1

          $18! Tell us where!

        • +2

$17 for 9KG fill at Great outdoors centre, Wacol QLD every Monday. $19 normally I believe.

That's the cheapest I've seen it before.

Usually around $20 for a fill in Sydney everywhere I've checked.

Kogarah, Princess Highway NSW. The servo across the road to Mobil. It's $17.99.

I think the Mobil has become a 7-11.

        • You mean the BP at carass park? Thats my local service staion! Perfect. And yes the Mobil is now a 7/11 like all overs in sydney metro area

        • Oh, I'm in melbourne :( Alot of places don't even like to refill anymore, and my closest is more than that for a 4.5kg fill!

        • Any cheap location in Liverpool or Campbell-town area?

        • +2

Small carwash next to Caltex Safeway corner Browns Rd & Princes Highway Noble Park refills for $19.99 plus a self serve carwash token (about 1 min 30 seconds from memory of carwash time). Enough to rinse the car.

Can I use this to heat the dog's kennel during the colder months?

    • +8

No, an empty gas bottle will not heat anything.
Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer :D

What if there's a genie inside of it?

  • Just be warned, I had a heck of a lot of trouble getting one of these filled in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Went to at least ten different service stations, but none of them had gas filling equipment anymore. The only one that did still have LPG tanks (OTO Gas in Randwick) couldn't find their fittings, so couldn't fill the bottle anyway! As we had a big BBQ planned with people already on their way, I just had to Swap and Go the brand new, unused empty bottle. Maybe saved $5 as I brought my own bottle, but wasted probably $20 worth of petrol and nearly two hours driving around looking (unsuccessfully) for a place to fill it! I called up BBQs Galore and a couple of other places asking where they get theirs filled, but all the ones they suggested had recently had their LPG refilling tanks removed.

Not a bad deal… Masters have them on special for $25 every so often (picked one up less than a fortnight ago).

I always prefer to have my bottles refilled:
    a) I know the condition of the bottle - all my bottles sit under cover, out of sun and rain
    b) cheaper to refill than a swap and go
    c) And you get 9kg of gas, vs 8.5kg that comes in the swap and goes.

(remember to swap and go your bottle towards the end of life… i've spent 20 mins before scrounging around trying to find the newest bottle at my local servo lol - really good nick).

I do like the heater idea though… hmmmm cheaper than buying the 44gal drum i was planning to cut up before next winter.

oh btw… in canberra its about $25 a fill at:
    BCF
    Camping world
    Southern Plumbing Plus

  • I think I grunted ala Tim the Toolman Taylor when I saw some photos of the "ozpig". I also have a sudden urge to buy a ute and grow a mullet.

Bicycle riders are a race now??? :o

        • Hey man, don't you try to trick me. I was talking about the watermelon.

        • It's only racist if there are concurrent references to watermelon AND fried chicken! ;)

        • Now that's definitely racist.

OzBargain community, may I please scream obscenities at him?
