  • is it dual 110/220 volts?

    • +1

      yes

      • I'm guessing that this means that the mains power adaptor is a dual voltage (110/240) switched mode power supply. The device takes DC power, so it's the adapter that needs to be 240v capable.

If so, the real issue is: Does the mains adaptor come with an Australian plug or can the mains lead be swapped for one that will plug in here. Or you can just get an international plug…

        Either way, good deal OP!

        • just buy an adaptor from $2 shop, or get one from Ebay for $1

        • +4

And while you're there, get a $2 roll of tape to make sure that the transformer doesn't fall out of the adaptor 1/2 way through the movie that you're watching :-)

Otherwise, you'll have to go back to the start - like @soob says below…

        • +1

No. Why would a US model power adaptor come with an Australian plug. That's like saying an Australian power adaptor bought in Australia could come with a US plug.

        • @MadMapMan
So true, I have 2 transformers I bought from Jaycar for $10ea and they're both a bit loose. I haven't needed to tape them but if they were going behind a TV somewhere I probably would. Sadly Amazon has some awesome ones but don't ship them to Australia.

        • +1

Actually I bought the previous model from the US and it did come with an Australian plug, and a US and European plug. They came as separate "faces" that would attach to the same power supply. Made it easier for WD to ship one product globally. I don't know about this model however.

        • Yep, likewise…
The overseas models (I had UK) seem to come with multiple clip in plugs…
But my Australian bought one came as a whole transformer unit (obviously with Aus prongs)!!!

        • I have bought both Seagate and Western Digital external hard drives that had this exact system, I wish all electronics manufacturers used this method.

    • Works fine, dropping to 12v anyway. Just needs a pin adapter, off eBay $1 shipped. They're cheap, small, handy, and might get lost… So buy a few, IMO.

  • -3

    Few questions:

    1. Will this work in AUS power?
    2. If not, how much will it cost to buy and where the adapters?
    3. Can I use google and other sites with this device?
    • +1

      YESSSSS

  • -5

Does not do skip, only has fast forward, more like a VCR than a PVR. Only get if you will use for entire streams always starting at the beginning.

LAN management somewhat poor, loses folders and connections regularly and does not display long paths well making it hard to browse.

    • +1

It does do skip.. Press fast forward/rewind while seeking (x2/4/8/16) and it will skip 10 minutes.

    • You can move forward to a specific time.

    • +1

As caprimulgus said you can use the fast forward/rewind button whilst seeking and it will jump forward. That's what I use 90% of the time when resuming something that finished whilst I fell asleep.

And as aldoduco said you can also move to a specific point in time too.

And if you close the video it will resume from that exact spot next time provided the WDTV & streaming box hasn't been rebooted. My WDTV streams from a 10w Fit-PC2 box so nothing ever reboots :)

  • hmm I just bought one of these two days ago (from amazon).

What is their policy regarding price drops etc? Are they likely to refund me the difference?

I get the sense that western digital may have dropped the wholesale price of these globally.

    • -1

If it hasn't shipped you can cancel and re-order. Otherwise their policy is their prices can change all the time and tough luck if the price drops after you bought it and it ships.

    • Get on to Live Chat and ask nicely. Chances are they will refund you the difference.

    • Back when I got my Crucial M4 they did actually refund the difference when I emailed them about it.
The price dropped a second time and I tried again but they wouldn't do it again though, so I'd say it's worth trying your luck at the very least.

in the other deal - model no. is WDBGXT0NBK

    This one is WDBHG70000NBK

Just FYI. Might be same thing though just different numbers for diff countries

  • Office Works price beat 5% anyone?

    • I was wondering the same thing…

      • Just called them and they said no. "No Amazon, No eBay, only regular Australian websites"… Do I wait at lease a week for delivery for $20…hmmm

        • Depends how quickly u want it. I bought one from officeworks after seeing the deal on here and it arrived this morning. Very happy with the delivery time from officeworks, plus it's free delivery.

  • I just bit the bullet and bought one of these.

I've heard dodgy things about the adapters on eBay. Can someone please point me in the direction of a good quality, yet cheap adapter?

    Thanks

    • I bought from Jaycar thinking their $10 adapter would be better, it's not loosey lose but not tight either. So rule those out of your search.

Hey guys hope this helps. Last year Amazon had these- read post
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/58134

My comment is about 9 from the bottom. Anyway, I went in and asked OW if they would price match and they did, no questions asked.

    Here is my receipt

    http://postimage.org/image/7owxmyxc9/

I remember a few people from here got them to do it as well. So maybe print the receipt out and take it down to your OW to prove that they do price match Amazon

    Good luck!!

    • Thanks for taking your time to post your receipt and link to past posts

    • Thanks,

Just cancelled my order and will give this a go.

      • Pretty sure they'll be smart to this by now but if anyone succeeds let us know.

    • No worries guys. Hope it works for you!
Not sure why i got negged. I guess it didnt work for someone, but i didn't say it definitely would… Worth a shot though!

    • Tried it even with your recipt. No good. They've changed their policy and wont do anything from Amazon or eBay any more. The guy actually said "its because people used to upload their recipt to the internet and others would print it and demand price match" LOL

    • +1

From OW site, no mention of such restrictions. Kick arse!

Identical products are price matched against online stores but as with any other kind of store, the item must be currently in stock. When price matching online stores we also take into account the added cost of delivery. If the identical product can be purchased and delivered via an online store for a total price lower than the one we are offering, we will beat that total price by 5%.

    • Thankyou OP and thankyou sponge36 - I went into Officeworks at around 8:30 PM, not realising that the deal had expired during my commute. The attendant and manager were really nice about it and price matched the $78.47 price - 5%, making it $74.19 all up.

Just a note for those of us that are taking advantage of INGs Orange Everyday 5% off Visa Paywave transactions, Officeworks Hobart don't have the newer scanners with Paywave support.

      • Can you scan your receipt please? I gonna take it to my OW

  • Are these also a pvr?

    • No.

  • OW wouldn't pricematch over the phone, so stuff it, i ordered from amazon.

decided not to get one from the $99 deal yesterday (because i have the old non-streaming model, which i'll use downstairs when i build an HTPC), but for $75AUD, what the hell! i'll use it until i do build an HTPC, and then use it as a back-up! aha.

    cheers.

  • +1

But I just bought the other one for $99 YESTERDAY :'(

    • +3

Me too, for my mum's birthday. The way I rationalize it I prefer to have it now and with local warranty so that she can have it in time. If I ordered from Amazon there'd be no guarantees.

      • -2

yeah, i would have preferred local stock from officeworks, and that's why i tried pricematching over the phone (can't get down to a store today)…but my friend just bought one locally, so worst comes to worst, i'm hoping i can repack it into my friend's box (with the australian plug) if i have any warranty issues!

        • Thats fraud and you won't have any luck with warranty. Your device has a serial number and by that alone they can tell which country the item was bought from

        • -1

          Better call the cops!

Well we'll see whether the local store actually checks the serial number…I highly doubt they will. But either way, I think I'll live!

        • Hey douche its a WD, not an officeworks media player. Warranty goes to WD, not the store.I tried to save you being a douche but im obvisously too late

        • Was talking more about 30 day guarantee if it's DOA (hence why I said repack it). In which case, it IS the store's policy.

In any case, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I doubt there will be any problems anyway, never known a WDTV live to break down.

    • +2

Me three. I'm more comfortable buying locally unless there is a really big price difference plus we Ozbargainers need to support Officeworks - after all it's usually our last port of call to get the extra 5% off.

  • How does this one compare to the Roku XS?

  • I'm new to this kind of stuff.
How is this compared to something like XBMC?

    • +2

They're really not as good as XBMC, the media library stuff is quite slow and pretty terrible for TV show use (in library mode, every single TV episode is listed separately, intermixed with actual movies), and a lot of people resort to kinda-cumbersome 3rd party tools like ThumbGen to generate 'thumbsheets' which are just giant JPEGs showing the plot synopsis etc to make it at least halfway attractive.

That said, they're rock solid in terms of actual playback and compatibility. If you're fine with just viewing and playing files from directory structures, they're not a bad choice. And they're a great little player for Netflix etc. if you're using an alternate DNS or VPN to bypass geolocation restrictions.

      • Not the case for me, my tv shows are accessible in folders as they are on my mac.

  • +1

Sorry if its a noob question, but considering the fact that I have a wifi XboX, do I need to buy this?

    • +1

No, just install XBMC on your xbox

      • Does XBMC work with xbox 360? I was just reading up on it and it says you cant play .mkv files with it on the xbox since it does not transcode?

        • I dont own an XBOX, but it appears that you're correct in saying it won't play mkv files natively.

  • i have this, the roku XS and the boxee (one for each tv). imho the boxee beats all the rest hands down. The only area where Boxee is lacking is support for the official Hulu app, and Amazon instant video

    • Could you elaborate on benefits of Boxee?

      • off the top of my head-
its support for playing files off your local network is kickass
interface is snappy prob due to better specs
lots of 3rd party repositories (Navi-X ftw)
        qwerty remote

        • +1

          qwerty remote is cool…

      • btw, this is the only device i know that can play the free version of Hulu on your tv set (bartsidee repository)

    • Just wondering if boxee has international language support?

  • -2

Does it have a camera so I can do hand gestures as advertised? virtual display 360 degree. cool stuffs.

  • This deal sounds good and knock the other one $99 for the same thing.

  • Looks like the price is now us$69.99.

    • and how much shipping to Aus?

    • .

  • Myn came up as USD$78.10 Delivered

  • Will this have the iview App? or do I need to flash it with Aus firmware?

    • Good question…
Apparently you can get the Australian WDTVs to display the Netflix app if you factory reset them while you have a US IP Address (via a VPN), so maybe the reverse is true as well. I'm not too sure.

  • Thanks. I now know what I'll be giving my sister for Christmas.
