iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi $339 (Apple Store Refurbished)

32

this makes a saving of $150 over the IPad 4 wifi 16gb, which is decent enough for an old model

note apparently Apple refurbs come with brand new screen, backing and battery

What a ripoff, save the money and get an ipad3 or 4. It's worth it.

    • is it ? like comparing a FULL HD, 3D, LED at $1200 vs a simple FULL HD LCD at $600.

the LCD still does its job.

        We're talking about only a $150~ difference here. Also it's a refurb…

yes who will buy ipad 2?? its not retina

May be Apple can advertises it as the "ten inches iPad Mini". People will go wow and line up for it.

Well, I think this is a good deal for some. For example, my daughters school has decided on the ipad 2 for next year (rather than ipad 3 or 4). With all the other costs, buying it like this is still a good 100 - 150 cheaper than the ipad 3 or 4. If you have several kids, it all adds up. I was lucky enough to get this at big w staff day when they were selling it for about $318 brand new the other week. They normally sell for $397 approx. in the stores at the moment. So this is still a decent price. The school wanted to charge about $450 with a STM case (that I got off amazon for about $33 shipped)

    • I thought schools got a education discount…

      • The Apple Education discount does not apply to the iPad range.

        • ?? it did 12 months ago - but certainly not refurbs.

        • -1

And if they are purchased via the school they will get a corporate price.

        • perhaps the school doesn't see the need to pass on the discount?

        • Never did since iPad 1

        • Yep not only will they not pass on the discount, my son's school will charge every parent for $108 per term, and the ipad programme is for 2 years, with 6 terms payment total, meaning paying a damn $648 for just a wifi 16G ipad4 which is absolutely a RIP-OFF !!! and been told we are not allow to BYO plus giving us a long expensive list to buy apps from itune store

      • or are included in the education tax rebate?

        • doesnt exist now - centrelink just pay the full lump sum to all eligible on FTB.

      • Re: I thought schools got a education discount…

I think you'll find that all the teachers and their aides need the Ipads too, and I'll bet they aren't paying for theirs. The students subsidize the teacher's toys.

It has been a long time since I bought something from the school cheaper than I could easily purchase elsewhere. I think it is largely because the people involved in purchasing don't particularly care, it's not like their salary will change if they don't sell at a competitive price.

my kids primary school did this is this current year - grade 6. i bought 2 x 32gb refurbs so theyd last the distance when it comes to retaining both school work & apps and the inevitable games/music etc. then theyll be useful into the future too, with PC & tablet work required into secondary school.

they get plenty of weekend entertainment from them too.

being kids, i bought nice secure covers for the ipads to remain in, and then from COTD a cheap $3 foam netbook cover to withstand the recklessness. done the job - still good as new 12 months later.

  • Forgive my ignorance, I only have a 3 year old, what age kids are using them at school and what for/instead of?

That's a great question. I can't see the advantage of using a $300+ device in schools when, lets be honest, the kids will just end up playing angry birds. Will the $300 improve their education? I'd love to get a parents perspective (possibly off topic)

      • the ipads have taught them a lot about presentation of work that a few colour pencils around the border of a foolscap sheet just never achieved. all work is submitted in class to the teachers email (from home or school), responded to the childs school email, all activity at school monitored on their server, and teaches them a lot about responsibility and the evils of modern technology (yes there were some incidents).

        • I'm not saying its bad or good, I'm genuinely interested. Lots of pros and cons to it which isn't what I'm after. Is it used for certain classes or a general tool? In lieu of text books? For essays? I love tech, hence the questions.

In my unasked for opinion a Windows (or even a simple gnu/linux) slate would be more appropriate. Stylus for art, industry standard office / image editing programs etc. An iPad seems more like a toy

        • The ipad is for year 7 or first year high school. All textbooks will be placed on ipad, meaning reduced cost theoretically. This includes fiction books I am led to believe. Research I guess and taking notes. Other than that not really sure what thy will be used for. It seems many schools are replacing their netbook program with ipads.

        • Schools netbook program… worst government decision ever.

    • Bought my older kids an ipad last year and found the 3yr old kept on pinching them to play with. He got my old Ipad 1 for his birthday and plays with it daily. Yes he plays angry birds etc, but I control the content and he mainly has educational games and books on there. It is surprising how much there is that is aimed at the kindergarten market.

  • cheers, wanted to get my parents an ipad 2 for xmas, new price is stupid and second hand doesn't make for a good present.

  • Interesting how when I went to go ask apple (genius bar) if my iPad screen can be replaced they said no and said I will have to replace my current iPad with a new one for $200+ and they go selling refurbished iPads with a brand new screen.. Doesn't make sense to me…

I had a crack on the screen but everything else was perfectly fine.

    • this only came onto their website today as i also checked yesterday

      • they said if they were to replace the screen the iPad will stop working in 2 months. So in other words the refurbished iPads will last for 2 months? or were they just trying to make me pay $200+ just to get another iPad instead of getting the screen fixed for $100 or under?

  • huh?
    meh, not worth it.

"this makes a saving of $150 over the IPad 4 wifi 16gb" hmmmmm comparing an "Apple" with a ……. better Apple?

  • +2

$150 is not worth the saving for an iPad 2. Also only a refurblished.

  • worth the saving beause ipad 5 will probably be out march/april and then your out of date anyway

  • lol it was only a 1.5 years ago that people were paying $600+ for the ipad2

    • -1

Not really, unless you wanted a 3G or a capacity greater then 32gb, same as what it is now.
