  • Dell Inspiron 630m — early 2006
    Dell Inspiron 640m — mid-2006

Both laptops would be more than 6 years old now. It's great that a new battery would inject some new life to those old laptops (to run Xbuntu for example). Unfortunately more and more laptops/ultrabooks are now having non-replaceable batteries :(

    • My ever reliable 640m from June 2006 has no problems running Windows 8 and now even faster with an Intel 330 SSD.
Still gets 5+ hours from original (9 cell) battery though it now spends much of its time connected to a DELL U2311H and powered by AC.

Thanks OP I've always wanted the 6 cell.

  • whoa these are fossils by computer standards. But it is great that Dell still sells them for such old computers.

  • Bargain! You can even buy it to rip out the cells.

I got a couple of Dell batteries before for general-purpose use. e.g. camping, or travel charger for phone/tablet.
You can wire a connector for a generic li-ion charger, a switch to enable the output (pull one pin low?), and a buck converter for 5V out.

    • +1

^ yeah from what i recall the batteries are usually 18650's, not bad of a price for 6 18650 batteries.
      According to the specs:
      53 WHr = 2 sets of 3 x 3.7 18650 batteries = 11.1 Volts
      so 53 WHr / 11.1 V = 4.77 Amp Hrs= 4770 mAh for 2 x 3 at 11.1 V
Therefore they'll be approx standard capacity 18650s (2385 mAh)
Not sure whether they'll be individually protected cells or not.

Comes out to about $3 a battery

      • Pretty sure they wouldn't be individually protected. You do wonder how old the cells are though. Are they still manufacturing them or are they clearing old stock? They degrade with age so it's something to keep in mind.

Very good price for a genuine battery nevertheless!

        • Yeah, that's my worry when I order it as well, but anything is better than what I have in my 640m now (last 2 seconds…) so for under $20 with 3 months warranty, why not.

      • Definitely 18650s from the picture. (The alternative is rectangular cells.)
Protection circuit works on the whole pack, not individual cells.
You can still use the protection circuit for output, which should also keep the cells balanced.

But you cannot use the built-in charging circuit, due to the proprietary smarts.

  • Nicely spotted. Wish they had a deal on the 700m battery. Maybe I'll start watching that page.

  • Mine has just been delivered but it's the larger 9 cell 85WH
Excellent value I know but I already have the 9 cell and wanted the smaller 6 cell to fit flush with the 640m and to save weight.
