Is this just a dupe for this deal but you're listing the price for one way instead of return?

    • Extra dates in this as well I guess…

I'm completely fine with one way ticket to Japan and stay longer if they gift me a pretty girlfriend there.

    • Have you perhaps tried talking to them?

    • This is what daddy warned me about

  • +1

I'd suggest into Osaka and back from Tokyo. We got the 5 day rail pass for western Japan and then the Shinkansen to Tokyo. Good deal, but we had to pay School holidays prices.

Food is Sydney prices (which for Japan is cheap). Alcohol is way cheaper!

  • Is there a date when Spring skiing starts in a family friendly / accessible place?

    Say Hakuba?

Hoping for a time that has cheaper accom/ lift passes/ less lines…

Equivalent to Sep 1 here/ NZ, or April 1 in Canada.

    • Late Feb, early Mar would be the timing. Seasons go through to the beginning of Apr.

      • Cheers. Will go for March.

        • Just note that it's pretty wet in March in hakuba. Plenty of rain. Still dumps snow occasionally but it's heavy. Manageable on steeper runs. Bottom runs will close due to lack of snow but top ones are decent for a while

          • @belongsinforums: Cheers.

Can only see fight availability on April 3 (even worse). Guess the cherry blossoms would be out.

Any alternative recommended locations (kid friendly)?

            • @tunzafun001: Hokkaido should be fine for skiing in April

              • @belongsinforums: Anywhere in particular in the north? Niseko seems a bit..ummm bogan …A bit "Bali'?

Easy enough to access? Just looking at cruises that have Hokkaido ports for a 'taste'. Even better if a cruise terminates there.

                • @tunzafun001: Rusutsu is great when it dumps. Niseko is crazy expensive these days. I'd consider your skiing level above all else. Easy enough access from Sapporo airport

                  • @belongsinforums: I'm confident on double blacks. Partner is a blue skiier, daughter has never seen snow.

I'm happy enough on blue runs and basic blacks. But avoid green cat tracks and trails as much as I can…

Accom wise, we normally stay in lodges with own ensuite, but shared kitchen/ lounge

                    Rusutsu fit that?

                    Thanks for the help

                    • @tunzafun001: Rusutsu might be a bit lacking for beginners. However i think there's an attached resort with a fairly flat run. Not sure about accommodation as I bussed in from Niseko. Personally i found Niseko way to flat to be enjoyable, but it does have lots of lifts. Rusutsu is all about the tree runs, if they still allow that. Japanese resorts are quite strict on out of bounds skiing. You might also consider a much smaller lesser known resort for a more Japanese experience as Niseko et al is all Aussies and Chinese

                      • @belongsinforums: Yeah, Niseko doesn't sound like it would float my boat.
Summary, north if later than March. Rutsusu for tree runs.
Do you think Hakuba would suit us if we can go earlier?

                        • +1

@tunzafun001: Hakuba is fine. At least there's plenty of variety there. Happo O ne has some steeper runs. Cortina is great for powder days or if you just want to stay at an inclusive resort. 47 is fairly close to echoland for bars. I'd go for accommodation with as little walking as possible to the gondola. If you want the Japanese experience, stay at a bnb type place with included breakfast and dinner (and shared bath). Plenty of public onsens around to enjoy in the evening

Been to japan earlier this year - i found this channel/vlog quiet useful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OVnUoPW8wg

JR pass is not cheap anymore, plan ahead and consider JR regional pass it saved some money for me.

Get the most comfortable shoes for walking, lot of walk even inside train stations.

Feel free to ask any questions, happy to help what I can.

Above dates does not cover Cherry Blossom.

    • @sydneybargainer Yes few Qs I have, planning to go next yr with family 1st time. What is the best cheapo method to get train tickets, is it to get the suica card? Or do you buy individual tickets from train station?
its bit confusing as I see japan has subway, monorail, trains, bullet trains..etc
am thinking of traveling from Tokyo to Osaka , so where buy ticket?
Any recommended itinerary/places you can share you be helpful
      thanks:-)

      • +1

suica card is the easiest way for subway/jr city trains. You can also use it for most other trains as well (including bullet train).
Bullet train between tokyo/osaka is about 130$ one way pp. You can also buy bullet train tickets at the station or using smartex app.
Generally found it's not cheaper whichever way you buy the ticket.

  • +1

In Osaka - I bought 3 days train ticket + 30-40 attraction ticket combo which was great. & for remaining days bought a day pass for train.
Suica card will work in most train & I did return the card at osaka airport to get deposit back. :) Allow extra time due to the queue at airport.
I bought JR regional pass for 7 days or 5 days validity which covered all my bullet train journey except 1 i think. I end up saving about 20,000 yen compare to single/return bullet train tickets.

If you are visiting universal studio osaka (which I think worth the visit at least once) - book in advance - you can book the some of the rides time slot in advance.
priority line is worth on busy days. food inside is pricy.
I did not go to Disneyland.

    Hope it helps.

  • Anyone had experience flying Jetstar for international flights? I'm considering since JAL, ANA, and Cathay are so much more expensive.

    • Never had issues - fingers crossed for next time. :)

    • Get direct flights if you can and you'll be fine. Flights are packed
