Or go for some larger capacity drives from East Digital?

4tb is a drive for ants.

      • is there some reason why local shops upcharge you so much for 8tb or more?

        • Because they think they can?

Generally, as NAS/Enterprise HDDs go up in capacity their specifications change as well. E.g. more cache, hermetically sealed with helium gas rather than oxygen, sometimes a higher MTTR rating, higher TBW rating, etc.

I second what @impose suggests and recommend East Digital HK for hard drives if it's for home/SMB use.

  • Is purple better than red plus in a nas that store ip camera footage?

    • No. Purple is the entry level. Very reliable but slow speeds. The Reds are better at everything.

      • Ahh… Are you thinking of the WD Blue line?
The WD Purple is designed for NVR and security camera recording, etc.
From what people say online, the Red Plus/Pro is comparable to Purple in hardware/quality, except that the Purple has the added feature of supporting ATA Streaming Commands.
So if you're streaming footage to record on your NAS, then the Purples are designed for exactly that.

    $32.50 per TB ouch

  • I currently have 2x 2.5" 2TB for storage. Would this single 4TB 5.25" be better?

  • 4tb… lolz

For everyone laughing at 4Tb NAS drive…

I am really really scared of using anything bigger than 4Tb in RAID 5 configuration - RAID rebuild time scares me a lot.
So for me 4Tb is perfect for RAID 5. :)

It's not the size, it's how you use it.

Is it just me or the hdds never went down after that stupid hdd crypto mining..

    • Around the same level.

At 4TB, this wont come down much compared to the larger drives
