  • Fairly solid phone, getting a bit old, but mine works well

    good price

  • rooting it? max OS version? (2.3 installed)… not too bad i guess.

hmnm it would seem the internal storage for apps is only about 100MB-150 MB if they cant be moved to the SD card…(IE apps with Widgets)

    Memory
Card slot microSD, up to 32GB, 2GB included
Internal 512 MB ROM, 512 MB RAM (418 MB user-available)
however users are reporting only 150 availible for apps…

need something like the Galaxy s2 which has 2GB + 6 (8GB total) that you can slot a memory card into thats cheap like this… suggestions?

wildfire s uses a mini sim?
    http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_wildfire_s-3777.php

hmm cheap android phone is looking like "a HTC One V" 170 bux unlocked… need to get one locked on prepaid i rekon.

    • Xperia Sola has a micro-sd card, and a dual core if you care for specs, it's $179 on Vodafone but free network unlock from their website. There's 8gb of storage inside, but I think it's only roughly 4 that is user accessible, but there is a MicroSD slot.

      • hmm not too bad… the mini sim is just the "normal" size one isnt it?

just need something with a decent speed, with a decent camera and decent amount of space for apps…

        over being on a plan….
just had a look at the specs VERY nice… besides the lower ram looks to almost hold its own against the galaxy s2…ohh and it looks like it has a smaller screen/battery.
anyone know of a cheap android phone that also has a front camera? (as well as decent space for apps and camera res)

The galaxy w at about the same price looks like a decent single core:
        http://shop.vodafone.com.au/mobile-details/buy-samsung-galax…
        front facing camera,
        LED flash
        4GB internal
        5MP camera.
        1.4Ghz core

Galaxy W doesn't have free unlocking though, so you have to add another $75 on top of that unless you want to go with Vodafone. Xperia U has a front facing camera, but it has only 4GB user accessible and no SD card slot. I'm not sure how cheap is cheap for you, but if you want a direct competitor to the Galaxy S2 without actually buying a Galaxy S2, then I'd recommend the HTC Sensation XE which is currently $269 + Delivery at Kogan. Has a micro-sd slot, dual core 1.5 ghz, 8 megapixel camera, front facing camera, 4GB internal + micro sd card. It was the flagship phone in 2011, so it has a pretty strong custom development scene at XDA-Developers. On another note, I'm surprised that the S2 is fetching high prices (roughly $350+).

        • Your my hero…! thanks, sounds like a great price. bit higher than i wanted to go, but sounds like it should tick all the boxs at a reasonable price.

as cheap as 250 from other stores too!

          edit curse you!!!!!
you build up my hopes then they come crashing down:
          3G Network900, 2100MHz
          no next g :S

Oh, sorry, didn't check that out XD. Vodafone had a Next-G version for $29 a month last year, which is why I thought this would be the same. Hmm, well then I'm not too sure what else to suggest, I'm sorry :(.

    From where????

    • Australian Post

  • How much would it cost to unlock from Telstra?

    • They might unlock it free like they did when the Sony Xperia Mini were on Special.

Should call and ask before buying.

I love when a deal is posted for a cheap-ish Android phone on OzBargain. The first few comments are guaranteed to be:

    How much/how to unlock it?
    Can it be rooted?
    Low stock??????????

  • I find pretty much every phone around this price point has the 150mb app memory limit problem. I have the LG P690 which has it, the Samsung Galaxy Ace has it, this phone has it. It's a pain, but if you uninstall all updates for system apps you don't use it's workable.

I have this phone and I love it to bits!
Yes, it can be rooted! A quick Google search will bring up heaps of tutorials just by searching 'Root Wildfire S S-On'.
The default memory is a tad small (112MB I think) but this is not an issue if you use an app like Link2SD or you are using a small rom.
Stock rom is Android 2.3 with Sense, but ICS and JB are available after flashing Clockwork Recovery (after root) and downloading roms from XDA developers.
There are no free 'Network Unlock' options available (that I'm aware of) but I unlocked mine on eBay for ~$5.
Wildfire S does not support flash.
This phone uses a regular sim, not mini-sim or micro-sim.
This phone operates with 850mhz and 2100mhz (for 3G). Optus customers beware. I use this on Optus and can only get 3G reception in metro areas. Everywhere else is 2G.

It's a great little phone that does what it needs to :)

    • Can you please provide us the link from where you got the unlock code for $5,Did little bit research, but couldn't find reliable someone.

I don't think that this is the seller, but it looks to do the job: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Unlock-Code-HTC-Wildfire-S-Telstr…

        • Thanks for the info, Did you use this to unlock your mobile ?

        • +1

Yeah. Be warned though, this phone uses 850mhz and 2100mhz radios for 3G. Optus and its significant others use 900mhz and 2100mhz for their 3G. Using an Optus SIM in this phone will work after unlocking, but your 3G coverage will be limited. If your using a network that is running on the Telstra wholesale network (like Kogan mobile) it should work fine.

        • Thanks for the info.

      Actually, "regular" sim IS mini-sim.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subscriber_identity_module

micro-sim is the one apple made popular with the recent iphones.

A full-sized sim is the size of a credit card.

      • +1

Wow, you learn something new everyday! I've never heard of a phone using the whole 'credit card' thing before!
