            • @WookieMonster:

I claim a tax deduction on my personal contributions, which means those contributions get taxed at 15%, plus my assessable income is reduced.

You got to declare this as part of your tax return, right?

If my understanding is correct, claiming a tax deduction on my personal contributions effectively turns my post-taxed contribution into a pre-tax contribution

I was just surprised that this happens. I mean, I'm no tax expert either but thinking in a 'common sense' way.
You see, only recently, I started to voluntarily salary sacrifice extra monies into the superannuation, but this is pre-tax.
I was of the understanding that this pre-tax amount would get taxed at 15%.

Now, once the government has taken my tax from my salary, I get my take-home salary.
From this take-home salary, if I were to voluntarily put more money into the super (eg. using a credit card)
and then tell the government that they should only tax me 15% on this amount of already-taxed-money,
then does this mean \Government should give some money back to me?

I got to speak to an accountant about this.

              • +4

@whyisave: I made multiple personal contributions in FY24 via Sniip, and those had no tax taken out at the time. I had to wait until FY25 to then lodge a notice of intent form with my super fund, where I said I wanted to claim a tax deduction on a specific dollar amount of my personal contributions made during FY24.

When my super fund processed my claim, they took 15% tax out of that specific dollar amount from my super account, and then they told the ATO that I was claiming a tax deduction of that specific dollar amount on my FY24 personal income tax return. This tax deduction was auto-filled into my FY24 tax return a few days later. I also eventually received a letter in the mail from my super fund, saying that I claimed a specific dollar amount as a tax deduction for FY24; this letter is useful if the ATO audits my FY24 tax return and asks me for evidence that my tax deduction claim was legitimate.

You can read more about all of this here if you have not seen this ATO webpage already.

                  @WookieMonster: This is clearer now.

Also, I did see that ATO link in one of your replies.
I read it, in haste and I just did not re-read it again.

            • @WookieMonster: this is an accurate statement

once non-concessional becomes concessional for the previous financial year once you lodge the notice of intent to claim in the current year

this probably won't apply to you but for people that have receive Centrelink or have a Family Tax Benefit or a Reportable Fringe Benefit may get hit with an adjustment that could make them pay back money owed if they claim the personal contribution

    bring back 10% ffs

    • YES pleassssssssssssssssss

    • +1

No purchase fees is still exceptional value for this with the Amex Plat, especially to pay off tax bills, etc. I’m guessing the popularity means that 10% won’t be coming back.

  • +8

if not meeting credit card spending limits or collecting points there's really no point buying these that you can't do with a regular credit card

    • +3

and anyone needing to meet credit card spending limits is much much better off going to woolworths this week

      • +1

That assumes you can get your hands on stock of Vanilla cards.

I have also used these deals when I'm in between churn cards and need to pay somewhere (online/over the phone) where they don't accept my AmEx.
Buy one of these and you've now got a Mastercard card number that is just a $250 extension of your AmEx.

      • Remember to rip open the gift cards in front of the cashier before paying to detect tampering

        • A lot of staff seem uncertain about gift cards and may panic. Ever had any problems?

          • +1

@rokufan: You just need to assure them / say that you are buying for personal use and that you want to make sure they haven't been tampered with with what has been going around. I assume they know, atleast the front desk does.

Most of them even said good idea

    • And lower surcharge comparing to credit cards, may be a couple of dollars on $250 spend.

Not worth the effort to run around looking for it. But since this is online, why not, especially if you have larger bills to pay in the coming days.

Zero benefit if you are already using a debit card.

      • it's still treated as a MasterCard credit card and surcharges apply like a regular MasterCard

        Or have I misunderstood you?

        • At a restaurant maybe, because the EFTPOS terminal has already calculated the surcharge.

However, online bill payment is usually 2-step confirmation, which allows them to validate the card and show correct surcharge before submit.

          • @browser: Sorry dunno what you on about

If the vendor has a surcharge on master then this gc will trigger it

These cards (if purchased with a decent rewards credit card) are great for topping up lotterywest app to play lotto. Getting points for buying the powerball :D

    • -1

Haha nice! Can't believe I didn't think of this!

  • +2

Bit sad when a bargain is buying $100 worth of gift cards for $100 and then not being able to convert them back to cash.

    • +2

Bargain isn't always applicable to everyone, this one might not be for you

      • +1

True, there do seem to be some upsides for some people after reading through the comments. It just feels crazy that we ever need to pay more than the face value of a gift card to buy it.

    • Well you might be able to buy them for less than $100 and you might be able to convert them back to cash.

    • No. Yes. Don't use them for any transactions that could get messy. You don't want to be dealing with unexpected fees, or refunds for that matter.

    • +4

      Already discussed in the comments.

    • +7

You really went out of your way to scroll past the multiple comments which discuss exactly why this is a bargain just to type that…

  • How long did it take for you guys to get it? I got the tax invoice email but didn't get the card yet.

    • Can take 30+ minutes. That is assuming you didn’t future date the delivery.

  • I was waiting for 10% deal, which is much better than this one (e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/833523)

    • Has been quite a while since they’ve done one. The no fees and occasional Flybuy points in store seem to be enticing enough for most… might not see a 10% off for a while.

    • +2

Read the multiple comments already made which answer your exact question…

    • +2

Can't pay bills with Coles GC lol

  • Would be much better if this can be purchased in large quantities at Coles itself…. otherwise the $250 denominations and $2.5k daily limit results in too many operational steps for not enough gain….

    • +3

Actually, it is easier to use online version. Cut and Paste the numbers and no need to opened the package, then type in the numbers carefully.

      • True. I was just thinking Coles would result in 3pt/$ so your benefit is 50% more, and if larger denominations like $500 would be available like the ultimate cards then your workload is halved…. ideally, they should just let us load $2500 into a single card. Why the hell not… but that's wishful thinking.

        • +1

Probably because of scammers. A $2500 gift card will get way more scammers/hackers interested than a $250 one.

  • -4

$3 fee if issued by comm bank.

  • The card will not load, is anyone having issues?

    • You can't reload them. The card will de-activate once your spent all the money on the card.

      • I mean I can’t see the gift card details, the page never loads on my iPhone.

  • Can I add this on my apple or android wallet?

    • Nope. It can only be used online or over the phone/where you provide the card number for card not present transactions.

  • Delivered in around 6 minutes for me.

  • +2

Perfect timing for my new credit card that's coming I the mail. ATO, Synergy, Water Corp, strata coming up soon.

    • Just try Deft and it is not working anymore

      • It worked for me. I did it without logging in.

        • Lucky you. I tried again and still no luck

  • Tying to do DOTDirect for car rego, but it doesn't allow partial payments - "The payment was declined due to insufficient funds in your account."

    Any tips?

  • Tried to buy with Westpac CC and CBA CC but they don't work. Anyone who had a similar issue?

    • +1

Using AMEX, I can't buy these gift cards using Safari. Fails every time (tried 5+ times in the past). I use Chrome and it works just fine (except it failed just one time, but worked the next working).

      • I think AMEX works well for me and never failed unless I try to buy more than once a day. CBA CC worked for the first time today. I might need to use like incognito or something for Westpac CC.

  • -3

How much of a pain in the arse are these to use given the minimal CC rewards benefit?
Are there limitations on using them for international purchases? Do they need to jump through hoops linking them to your ID or can you just start spending them?

  • +1

Purchased few lots over couple of days to met CC spend and pay the tax man.
For anyone experiencing payment failed try with different email or alias - worked for me.

    • A different email address worked for me

  • FYI I think NAB has started to block purchases on credit cards for these. I managed to make one successful purchase with my NAB credit card, then all subsequent attempts failed.

I messaged NAB who said the following:

Unfortunately with new credit cards in the first 6 months you are unable to place any cash advance payment through as this isn't considered a general use for a credit card.

    These include:
-Withdrawing cash from an ATM or in store
    - Purchasing gift cards (as these are considered cash purchases)
    - Transferring funds from a NAB credit card into another account.
    - Paying utility bills over the counter at a financial institution or an Australia Post outlet.
    - or Gambling transactions.

I do apologise for the inconvenience this may cause. Are you able to attempt the transaction via another payment method?

They would still be considered a cash purchase, as you are preloading a cash value onto the card. The system can detect this and will automatically prevent the transactions form this card for the next 6 months.

Unfortunately the only way around this, is to use another payment method.

    • "Maximum order value $2,500. One order per customer per day. "

      • My first order was 5 days ago, so I don’t think that limit would still apply. I also confirmed with giftcards that the error they are seeing is a “3DS Assistance” error.

  • +2

Transaction failed and says contact customer service. Last purchased some last week. Last promo I was purchasing consecutive days and it was fine. What gives…

  • My wife purchased a card on Friday (6/12/2024) and got the Invoice. However, she still did not get an email with the card details? How long does it take to process the order?

    • +1

I purchased 10 yesterday and got them in about 10min. You need to call them.

    • Did she enter the delivery email address incorrectly?

      • +1

Based on the Tax Invoice the email is correct and she did select Email delivery as the method to get the card. I will get her to call them.

  • +1

I bought a bunch a few days ago using my card, but now fails with the same card and says contact customer service.

    • +2

      Yep … same here

    • Same

    • +2

I just tried again through duck duck go, with a different billing and email address but same card and worked fine. Could have also just been fixed haha.

      • Thanks mate, yes I just tried and it worked with the same details.

  • Can we use this card to pay for others gift card at Shopback or Cash rewards?

    • +2

      ShopBack: that should be fine.

Cashrewards: no. EonX - the gift card company that operates the Cashrewards gift card portal - blocks all prepaid cards on their portal (even prepaid cards that support 3-D Secure). The gift card in this deal is a prepaid card, so no dice.

      • -4

Oh ok. Thank you for all information. So there's no more benefits to buy this type of gift card anymore!Don't know where can use it for.

        • +4

Just because Cashrewards does not accept this gift card, it does not mean there are no more benefits for using this gift card for anyone else. I am fairly sure the following are still possible (and this is not an exhaustive list):

          • Payments to the ATO.

          • Payments to other government agencies to pay for other services (e.g. car registration, council rates, infringements).

          • Payments via Sniip to supported billers (e.g. some superannuation funds).

          • Payments via Post Billpay online to supported billers.

Obviously, the $250 maximum for each gift card does somewhat limit you in the types of transactions these gift cards can feasibly be used for, but considering 139 people have upvoted this deal so far, that indicates that some people still think there are benefits to buying this gift card.

  • I have bought these in the past and I've got a small odd balance on them. How do you use up the small balance because you can't seem to use them in physical stores like Coles.

    • Pay the small amounts on bills like health insurances, energy bills. You can usually put small amounts with no surcharge

  • I finally got my new rewards card in the mail today and was planning on buying these after work to pay my HELP debt … only to realise it expired at 5 p.m. and not midnight tonight. Fml

    • +1

It may return next month, if not for the boxing day.

      • Thanks, I paid half with Sniip for now. I’ll see if these come back when I churn to my next card.
