    • Wonder if the Ontrac replacement pads work on these. Otherwise you’d be shit out of luck when they need replacing.

      • Having checked a teardown of the zone and a review of the ontrac the mechanism for the earcups is the same 2 long bars top and bottom and 2 short bars each side. Its literally the same headphones just the ontrac doesnt have the airfilter.

Even the ontracs have references to the zone under the changable colour plates. Would be good if could strip filters and fan out and just have headphones, cheap way to get those "new" $700 ontracs lol

        • There must be some angle grinder deals around! 😜

          • @cnut: What would you need an angle grinder for lol.

            • @RBZ10: To strip the filters and fans out. Lol

              • @cnut: You dont work in IT or have a tech background i can see lol

                • @RBZ10: Yes, you can see a lot from one joke reply. You’re very smart.

        • I checked with Dyson, and sadly according to them, the ear cushions are not interchangeable between the Zone and OnTrac?

          • +2

@Lord Fungus: Its literally the same headphone, I just recieved my zones and have looked at the images of the ontracs the mechanism is the same its the samr hesdphones just with a slightly diff case and no air purifier.

            Images of the 2:

            https://photos-eu.bazaarvoice.com/photo/2/cGhvdG86ZHlzb25nbG…

            https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTWmYyo…

Doesnt mean im 100% but that def looks 99% the same.

The ontracs are just to sell all the headphone parts they bought for the zones that didnt sell.

          • @Lord Fungus: I would be very surprised if they don't fit. The design of the mechanism is exactly the same, so they would have had to adjust the moulds to make them incompatible - and why would they do that? It makes no sense to make a new mould, instead of using the existing ones.

Much more likely that the support person you spoke to just has no idea what they are talking about. They probably looked up the ear cushions to see what headphones they are listed as compatible with (they are only listed as being compatible with the Ontrac), and went by that info.

        • @RBZ10 @caprimulgus I must admit I was surprised. I guess there’s only one way to find out for sure - who’s got both and can do a real world test?

          • @Lord Fungus: Just need to buy the cups and fit them to the zone dont need both lol.

          • +1

@Lord Fungus: Quite likely I'll end up buying cushions - if I do, I'll report back. (Or if anyone else does, please let us all know!) 👍

            • +2

@caprimulgus: According to this redditor the ontrac cushions do fit on the zone.

              • @Froot Eneloops: Happy days!

Now I’m in a quandary, as I’ve just discovered JB have both the Absolute and regular model for the same price. I definitely prefer the ultra blue colour over the Prussian, although you get more and different accessories with the Absolute…

"No one cared who I was until I put on the Dyson Zone Air Purifying Wireless over-Ear Headphones."

  • +1

It seems like this thing… sounds surprisingly good? If you can ignore the fact that it makes you look like a dunce, might be pretty decent

    • Yes, its compared with Focal Bathys in sound quality. Just not in the default EQ setting.

  • Hey, it's good while mowing…

    I'm serious

    • Exactly my thought. Especially in spring with all the pollens.

  • Just out of curiosity - How many of you here, reading the comments, have actually seen someone wear the headphones with the face /filter component in public??

    My anecdotal observation - none.

I think the big question is if the headphones alone are worth it?

  • Good deal! Good for hay fever in spring season. It would be great for home use. However, wearing it in the public, I can imagine will turn many heads and really stand out.

  • +1

this technology (gimmick or not) would be great for motorcycle helmets…

  • Hmm… would people use the air purifier function if went directly in the nose like Dune? https://platform.vox.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/chorus/u…

  • They weight 650 grams…

    • +1

      With the mouthpiece…

      • 590 without, 667 with

  • Is it me or is Dyson just super gimmicky and expensive? Their cyclonic vacuums were great, but everything since is just rubbish

    • +1

Don't know as can't afford any of their stuff usually

    • As with everything, it's subjective. What's gimmicky to you might be useful to others just like what's useful to you might be gimmicky to others.

I like their tower fans and heaters as the design is nice and the wifi integration works very well with Home Assistant. Those are really useless gimmicky features to most of my friends so I would never recommend a Dyson fan to them unless they like the design, but those features are the main reason why I bought them. Used, of course.

These headphones definitely look gimmicky in a country with good air quality but maybe people who live in heavily-polluted cities, or suffer from hayfever, or in a bushfire zone could find it useful.

  • Looks like HMPV is brewing in China—better grab this now, mask season might be back soon!

  • Your just asking for it if you wear this in public.

  • but actually its useful for some country are in serious air pollution.

  • +1

Might be useful on a morning jog in New Delhi with all the winter smog.

  • Has anyone's order shipped yet?

    • Just right now got notification :)

    • Yes just now

  • +1

I have seen an add on facebook where some is taking preorders for these headphones for 400$.

    • I've been seeing new eBay listings as well for these headphones haha

    • Whilst that's just ridiculous I suspect once they're gone moving on a lightly used pair for the same $200 won't be hard

  • +2

Found this, if anyone wants to remove the filters and cups, to reduce the visual bulk / reduce the weight (or reduce your embarrassment and shame wearing them in public? lol):
    https://www.printables.com/model/1126520-dyson-zone-backplat…

I actually dont mind the cheese-grater cups - it's the vibrant blue colourway that I find offensive! Lol. The prussian blue colourway looks way better, but that's a Dyson website exclusive unfortunately. I'm considering whether to plastidip spray the blue parts…

    • +1

Nice! The colour is no issue for me, I mean it's only blue not hot pink haha. This is pretty cool though so will throw a bookmark in it :)

      • +1

Haha - funny you say that: one thought I had was to get the pink ear cushions for the Dyson Ontrac, and then plastidip the blue into hot pink! If peeps are going to stare, make them stare! 🤣

(But probably, I would just go matte black, lol)

        • +1

To each their own I say mate! I'm looking forward to these for a laugh and if they sound better than my Bose qc35 I'll be very happy with the purchase :)

    • Looks like you'd need to remove the fans as well as the filter and cage. Can't seem to find any DIY mod guides online, would love to give it a go. Essentially they become Dyson OnTracs for $200

  • do you think it is great for mowing the lawn? any one try? I am using MS surface headphone for mowing the lawn now, seems ok. but with the dyson air purifier mask seems great protection for the dust / pollen , how often do they recommend to change the filter?

    • The blub says that it uses an electrostatic filter. Which will be overwhelmed really fast with all the crap generated when cutting grass, and expensive to replace.

These Dyson headphone/facemasks products are just a terrible idea all round.

A 3M half face respirator will look slightly less stupid, be cheaper, more comfortable, and far more effective.

  • +1

keen to know how many ppl here canned these cans then bought a pair :P

  • How is the sound quality compared to other cans?

    • $799 price tag….make the Zone a bargain

  • +5

They've also got the Explore Case version for the same price - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/dyson-zone-absolute-air-p…

    • +1

That must be a new entry as it wasn't on the site previously.

    • Different colour right?

      • Not just that. The Absolute+ model has an extra set of filters, in flight adapter kit, a carry strap case and two extra pouches.

Plus it has cheaper shipping cost for some reason.

        • +1

Oh, right. Bugger then, should've bought that. I can't find any reviews of the two different cases online, do they have the same RRP?

          • +1

@Liger Zero: The quarter turn case is like a standard headphone case, with a nice locking mechanism. Would be smaller and more form fitting.

The "explorer" case, I believe, is more like a small hard tote - like a single large pocket to carry everything in, with a shoulder strap.

I would prefer the quarter turn case, personally. But I much much much prefer the colourway ob the Explorer version, and the accessories are a bonus!

If I keep both, I'll use the explorer headphones with the quarter turn case for myself! 👍

            • @caprimulgus: Did you buy another?

I'm thinking that and returning the other one. Is return postage free?

              • +1

@abc: Yeah, I bought both. Will either return the other pair (if we can), or keep it. Havent decided.

Actually - the two cases seem to be a similar size. Just a different style: clamshell headphone case vs hard satchel. I'd still prefer the quarter turn probably, but could live with either.

                • @caprimulgus: The Absolute+ is $100 more at RRP with the extra accessories it’s a no brainer if you only bought one.

                  • @abc: For me personally, the colourway is more important than the extra accessories. If the colours had been switched, I would take the dark blue with quarter turn over the bright blue with explorer case (and extra accessories).

I dislike the bright blue enough to plastidip them to get rid of the colour…so for me, it's the difference between having to do that, or being fine with the darker blue!

As I said, the extra stuff (In-Flight Kit, extra pouches) are a nice bonus, but I dont really care about them. YMMV.

    • Legend!!!

My main problem was the vivid "ultra blue" colour in the other colourway…much prefer the more muted colour on this version! The extra accessories are just a bonus! 👍

    • Doh! Any idea on returns policy…

    • +1

Dammit now I got 2 pairs on the way 🤣

  • There was also a price difference initially. Dyson Zone was 999$ and Dyson Zone Absolute+ was 1399$.

  • +2

ordered one set and arrived today…it is heavy but not too bad when wear it. I won't use it on the move but don't mind to use them at my desk. The sound is pretty good and worth the price of $199

    • The sound is good, though it heats up my ear heaps with the padding. I like the fresh breeze in my face filtering out my dogs farts.

    • Doesn't the motors cause a humming noise?

      • yeah i can hear a little of it but if you are listening to music its not too bad, just a little bit of noise.

    • Pretty good for $199? Which ANC headphones under $1000 sound better in your opinion?

      • Strange question. They only cost $199… I don't even expect them to beat out the top Bose or Sony but they cost half the price.

        • Strange statement. Their sound doesn't change regardless of how much you paid for them or whether you got them for free. They sound much closer Focal Bathys than Sony 1000XM5. I own both.

          • +3

@elektron: I think the “hate” from these comes from the perception that you must use the purifying feature for them to work - you don’t.

Quality set of over ear headphones at 80-90% off RRP is a steal.

          • @elektron: What profile do you use when they sound closer Focal Bathys?
Is the bass boost profile any good?

            • @congo: I like Enhanced on most tracks and Bass Boost on some (that aren't too bassy already). I think the Bathys profile is somewhere in between the two.

This may sound crazy, but they sound kind of like Bathys in DAC mode, especially given that the Zone only support AAC. I don't know what Dyson have done with the DSP, but this is the best bluetooth headphone I've ever heard, period.

          • @elektron: Stoked if they sound like bathys. Whilst I don't own those my stereo speakers are Focal and I use a pair of Elegia (oratory tuned via qudelix 5k) daily too.

            • +1

@drprox: I can't believe it, but I'm liking them more than the Bathys and more than the B&O H95 (good subbass rumble, but they lack clarify). They just sound more exciting and with great subbass as well. In either Bass Boost on some tracks, but mostly Enhanced EQ. This is surprising, as they only support AAC, unlike the Barhys' near-lossless AptX, unless you're using an iPhone.

              • @elektron: When you said liking are you referring to the op's headphone? The dyson?

              • @elektron: I like Bathys more than the Dyson..it's objective anyway. The weight of the Dyson is a challenge for me after listen to it for a couple of hours. I may like the Dyson more once after the burn in period.

                • @xmchen: I don't feel the weight of the Dyson on my head, but those cups are massive, so I don't see using it outside of my house.

To me, they sound more fun than the Bathys, the subbass is definitely better and I would say the instrument separation is too. The build quality is also better than the Bathys. And I do like my Bathys, But there's a big difference un sound quality via Bluetooth and its built-in DAC. This is quite apparent when streaming high-res tracks from Tidal.

What I find perplexing is that the Zone via the AAC codec sounds closer to the Bathis un DAC mode.

Regards of the subjective sound preferences, these are top-tier ANC headphones, only let down by the lack of multipoint and the bulky size (it's more of an issue for me personally, than their weight).

The case is also top quality, but I wouldn't travel with it due to the size and the weight. The XM5's are much better for that (or even or the foldable XM4's for that matter).

                  • +1

@elektron: yeah…I agree they are a bargain at $199 and with bonus air purifier mask :-) They are comfortable to wear but I start feel the weight after an hour or so…

                    • @xmchen: I'm not even planning to try the mask, and only bought them as another pair of high-ebdheadphones :)

                      • @elektron: I have no plan to try the mask either..just treat it as a bonus..lol

          • @elektron: Btw can you tell me if these work without the Dyson app at all? I gather they can be connected like any other Bluetooth headphones

            • +1

@drprox: All Bluetooth headphones can work without an app, as far as i know.

              • @elektron: So they can be connected to the bluetooth receiver on the pc?

                • +1

@ATTS: Of course, I've already done that. My biggest annoyance with them is that they don't support multipoint, but I already knew that when I bought them.

                  • @elektron: Thanks, never knew multipoint was a thing

                    • @ATTS: Ots been essential for me for the past few years, to receive notifications and take calls from the phone and the work laptop.
