Does not require soldering to remove the fans - there is a just a 3 or 4 pin plug that has to be removed, which he glosses over pretty quickly in the video.

The reason he started unsoldering the speaker side is because he was looking for the battery. You dont have to do that.

        • Great to hear. What have you done with the vents/ caps? Removing the fans reduces weight but the cans are still huge!

I saw that replacement covers can be bought for the Ontrac phones, any idea if they are compatible?

          • +1

@pepto: I don't think the ontrac caps will fit because the zones have a cutout for the face cover which the ontracs don't. I think you'd need to cutaway some of the metal housing around the ear cup to make the ontracs caps fit on the zones.

Maybe if you 3d print something, but it might get too bulky…

            • +1

@Joehax: Yeah and also the Ontrac look like they have a different cutout, for where the headband connects. So you'd probably have to 3D print an adapter to fill that space too.

              • @caprimulgus: Thanks guys, seems like a lot of work so these are only really a go if you can deal with wearing the huge cans. Probably not for me in that case, I’ll probably wait around for a deal on some Sony WH XM4 or Bose QC.

        • Have you actually tried this? Interested in doing it to reduce the weight, but worried it might just decide to not do anything because the fans are unplugged.

    • @Joehax

Hey mate, can you confirm that removing the fans doesn't intefere with the headphones working otherwise normally? Lots of us interested in trying

      • I'm not Joehax but I've removed the fans. Headphones work just fine, there's just a cable that dangles out which you can sticky tape down (it connects to the fans).

        • Thanks. Any thoughts on weight after removing the fans etc? I imagine it would be pretty tolerable

          • +1

@Cronium: It's much more manageable after removing the fans and the overall decrease in bulk is appreciated, but would consider 3D printing some covers as per the previous comment chain as it does end up looking a bit funny.

      • I'm in the middle of this. Per the other comments seems like this works fine and per my numbers will remove ~100g of weight which doesn't seem as much as I figured but I'm about to swap the covers and grills for 3d printed ones which may save more too. Ordered another pair today too!

        • +1

Ordered a second pair of the Absolute as well! :)

Had refunded my original Quarter Turn case order - loss of 1x shipping cost was worth it for the additional In-Flight Adapter! (Plus my wife also preferred the darker blue colourway!)

Right for anyone that wants to know..
Removing the fans is very easy. The only part I found a chore was removing the 3 pin plug for them so I just ripped the wires out (never attached them again anyway). It's basically 6 torx screws, 3 clips and remove the plug. Job done. Don't need to touch the ear pad side at all.
Whilst the fans only weigh 48g each they seem noticeably lighter because of where the weight was. The aluminium covers and plastic underneath are about 25g each so if my prints are lighter there may be a small saving there too.

Do you have any photos of your end result, with the cups on? (The photos on Printables arent the greatest!)

The person who did a "make" on printables seems to have done some sort of fancy design on the cups - not sure if 3d printed or not, because the photo is again not great!

      • +1

sorry i haven't managed to get them off the person that printed them as yet!
they're in a carbon finish because i figured why not. Will share a pic and hope i have them soon as I'm just going to wear them without caps at all for now :D

Heres a picture with the 3d printed side plate: https://imgur.com/a/fM29w2J

  • The party is over. It’s $399 now

    • Damn, just when I was about to buy a second one

      • +1

I'm sure it will come back again, to clear the remaining stock. Just keep an eye out - I'm sure someone will comment here!

        Fingers crossed for $99!

(I already bought one for myself, and one for my wife…at $99 I'd buy a third one - probably the non-Absolute one just to get the Quarter Turn case, and to have a second pair for myself to leave the fans in, and use the air purifying for a laff!) :)

        • Yep I'll.grab a 3rd and maybe a 4th at that price. Stockpile!

          • @drprox: I've returned mine today. The distance detection doesn't work with my unit.

  • When I talked to chat they said at the start of this sale they had 400 units, now down to around 200. So it might go one sale one more time and that'll be it

    • Will it still be $199 or $99 / $149?

      • +2

Don't know but I doubt they will reduce price further considering how well it's already selling at $200

  • Has anyone encountered issues with the on-ear detection or the calibration?

    • Can I get a refund since I’ve already used the filter? I suspect there’s an issue with the on-ear detection. I have to press both cushions firmly to prevent them from automatically turning off. To confirm that this isn’t my fault, I’ve asked my wife to test them. Unfortunately, the situation worsens when she wears them. I tried calibration but it never worked.

      • What do you mean by "calibration" exactly?

Also, if they're not working properly then JB would have to replace them with new ones, if available.

This is what happened to me, FYI.
Simply, I couldn't switch them on unless I placed force on both sides towards my ears.
I think mine is a defective unit.

          • @sicaboy: Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear that - I forgot about that part on initial setup.

I guess you tried taking off the headphone cushions, then prob then back to try and recalibrate again?

            • +1

@Droz: They didn’t work out of the box. I tried recalibrating them, but they keep showing as failed. I did try taking off the cushions at the end and trying any luck, but they’re still not working. I just got them returned, but to be honest, the sound quality and noise cancelling are even better than AirPods Max, which is really impressive.

          • @sicaboy: I reckon it would be worth hassling JB for a replacement pair (or at least a full refund, and then repurchase when they go on sale again). If you can be bothered.

    • Nope
